Background: Provision of adequate water supply, sanitation facilities, hygiene and waste management in schools reduces the disease burden among children, staff and their families. Every child has equal right to grow in a safe and sound environment. However, levels of water supply, sanitation and hygiene are unacceptable in many schools worldwide.Method: Study included forty schools comprising twenty public and twenty private schools of Sunsari district selected by simple random sampling method. The status of school environment and sanitation were assessed by using observation and interview method using observation checklist, questionnaires and photographs.Result: Two public schools were completely devoid of sanitary facilities though toilet facility was present physically. Students couldn’t use toilet due to lack of water in one school due to theft of tube well and septic tank of the toilet was full in another school. Other remaining schools didn’t have satisfactory, clean and proper sanitary facilities. Only few schools had convenient hand washing point.Conclusion: Sanitation facilities were in neglected state evidenced by unavailability of sanitation facilities even though that was physically present and the sanitation facilities were in pitiable condition including cleanliness, water supply. All the stakeholders including school management, supervisors, parents, teachers, students should be ready to play vital role on their own. Lack of one toilet affects no. of students and people of surrounding area and raises of risk of soil transmitted diseases so this situation demands attention of authorities and other stakeholders.Health Renaissance 2015;13(2): 114-124

Abstract This cross-sectional study was undertaken to assess the status of school-based water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) resources and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) in Odeda, Ogun State, Nigeria. The status and condition of WASH resources were determined in eight selected schools (three with WASH support and five without). Stool samples were also collected from 428 pupils from both school categories and screened for STH infections. Findings showed that water and sanitation conditions of WASH resource programming schools were better than those in schools without WASH support. However, pupils’ knowledge about STH infections and basic hygiene were not significantly different between both categories of school (P > 0·05). The prevalence of Hookworm, Ascariasis and Trichuriasis cases recorded were 26·2, 18·2 and 1·6% respectively, with an overall prevalence of 33·4%. By school categories, Ascariasis (14·9 vs 20·6), Hookworm (17·7 vs 32·0), Trichuriasis (1·7 vs 1·6) and, any STH prevalence (27·4 vs 37·5) were recorded for schools with WASH resource programming and those without respectively. A greater portion of the infected children 95 (66·4%) were from schools without WASH support. Our findings imply that WASH resource may have very positive impact on the control of STH among school children. However, there is need for improvement on coverage, adequacy and maintenance of WASH facilities in school.

Abstract Access to potable water supply, sanitation and hygiene education remains relatively low both in the urban and rural areas in developing countries. The main aim of the study was to get an overview of the condition of the water and sanitary facilities in schools and of hygiene education. The method of investigation involved systematic random sampling with the use of questionnaires and interviews with the students and teachers and onsite inspection of the sanitation facilities available within the schools. The results revealed that 24% of schools used W/C while 76% of schools used pit toilets, of which 88% were ordinary pit toilets and 12% VIP. The number of toilets within the schools ranged between 0 and 14 revealing a 185:1 student to toilet ratio within the study area, but ranged widely from 83:1 to 510:1 between schools. The study, however, revealed the absence of wash hand basins in 77% of the schools and no soap in 88% of the schools with wash hand basins. Investing in clean water, sanitation and hygiene education in these public schools should become a priority for governments in developing countries and School Sanitation and Hygiene Education program (SSHE) should be adopted and implemented across schools in Nigeria.

Abstract Background: Improved Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services in Health Care Facilities (HCFs) is of significant public health importance. It is associated with a reduction in the transmission of hospital acquired infections (HAIs), increased trust and uptake of healthcare services, cost saving from infections averted, increased efficiency and improved staff morale. Despite these benefits, there is limited evidence on the status of WASH in HCFs in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA). This study assessed the status of WASH within HCFs in the GKMA in order to inform policy and WASH programming.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 60 HCFs. The status of WASH in the study facilities was assessed using a validated WASH Conditions (WASHCon) tool comprising of structured interviews, HCF observations and microbial water quality analysis. Data were analysed using Stata 14 software and R software. The relationships between WASH status and HCF characteristics were assessed using Fishers’ exact tests.Results: Overall, 84.5% (49/58) and 12.1% (7/58) of HCFs had limited and basic WASH status respectively. About 48.3% (28/58) had a limited water supply status, 84.5% (49/58) had limited sanitation status, 50.0% (29/58) had limited environmental cleanliness status, 56.9% (33/58) had limited hand hygiene status and 51.7% (30/58) had limited waste management status. Overall, there were significant differences in water supply status by ownership of the HCF and level of HCF. There was a significant statistical difference in WASH status between public and private not for profit facilities (p = 0.021). A significant difference was also observed in WASH status between hospitals and lower levels HCFs (p = 0.004). Conclusion: Majority of the HCFs in the GKMA had limited access to all WASH service domains i.e. water supply, sanitation, hand hygiene, environmental cleanliness and healthcare waste management. We recommend deliberate increased investments in WASH for healthcare services, especially for sanitation and hand hygiene provisions which were in the poorest state. Improvements in WASH conditions will not only minimize the risk of transmission of HAIs but also associated costs.

This article reports on a study that was carried out to establish determinants of ICT integration in mathematics teaching and learning. This paper focuses on the kind of support teachers require to effectively use ICT in teaching mathematics. An exploratory sequential mixed methods research design was employed to conduct this study in which quantitative data was initially collected in the first phase. Qualitative data was then collected in the second phase to explain the quantitative data collected in the initial phase. The study targeted all the teachers teaching in lower grades in both private and public schools. A sample size of 40 lower primary schools were purposively selected based on the availability of ICT tools for instructional purposes in those schools. Three teachers teaching in grade one, two and three were then selected using simple random sampling technique especially in cases where more than three teachers existed. Teacher Questionnaire, Teacher Interview Protocol and Observation Protocol were used to collect data. Data was analyzed qualitatively using descriptive phenomenological analysis in which data transcriptions were divided into themes and sub-themes related to phenomena under study. The findings of the study revealed that there was a significant relationship between supporting teachers’ use of ICT in the classroom and their actual use of ICT in teaching mathematics. The study findings however revealed that teachers teaching lower grades in Mombasa, Kenya were not adequately supported in their use of ICT in teaching mathematics. It was recommended that teachers must be granted adequate support in their use of ICT in teaching mathematics.

Abstract: Pityriasis versicolor or better known as “panu” is a superfcial fungal infection characterized by changes in skin pigment due to Stratum corneum colonization by dimorphic lipophilic fungi from normal skin flora. Pitiriasis versicolor is an infectious disease that is estimated occur due to poor sanitation (personal hygine) and lack of clean water. This research was aimed to determine factors related to Pityriasis versicolor infection. It used retrospective design where researcher tried to looking back about the incident of Pitiriasis versicolor on 76 fshermen who choosen by using simple random sampling. Based on the result of reseach, it was determine that bath habit (p = 0,000), clothing hygiene (p = 0,839), towels cleanliness (p = 0,699), clean water supply (p = 0,000), home environment hygiene (p = 0,588), for p<0,05 then these factors were related to the occurrence of Pitiriasis versicolor infection on fshermen in Penjajap Village Pemangkat. Thus, it could be conclude that there was signifcant correlation between bath habit and clean water supply with the incidence of Pityriasis versicolor infection. While the cleanliness of clothing, cleanliness of towels, and cleanliness of the home environment is not associated with the incidence of Pityriasis versicolor infection. Abstrak: Pityriasis versikolor atau lebih dikenal dengan panu adalah infeksi jamur superfsial yang ditandai perubahan pigmen kulit akibat kolonisasi stratum korneum oleh jamur lipoflik dimorfk dari flora normal kulit. Pityriasis versikolor merupakan penyakit menular yang diperkirakan terjadi karena sanitasi (personal hygiene) yang buruk dan kurangnya air bersih. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan faktor-faktor personal hygiene terhadap infeksi pityriasis versikolor. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan retrospektif dimana peneliti berusaha melihat ke belakang (backward looking) terhadap kejadian pityriasis versikolor pada 76 nelayan yang terpilih sebagai responden dengan teknik simple random sampling. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian diketahui bahwa kebiasaan mandi (p = 0,000), kebersihan pakaian (p = 0,839), kebersihan handuk (p = 0,699), persediaan air bersih (p = 0,000), kebersihan lingkungan rumah (p = 0,588), untuk p < 0,05 maka faktor-faktor tersebut berhubungan terhadap terjadinya infeksi pityriasis versikolor pada nelayan di Desa Penjajap Kecamatan Pemangkat. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada hubungan yang signifkan antara kebiasaan mandi dan persediaan air bersih dengan kejadian infeksi pityriasis versikolor. Sedangkan kebersihan pakaian, kebersihan handuk, dan kebersihan lingkungan rumah tidak berhubungan dengan kejadian infeksi pityriasis versikolor.

This study examined principals’ administrative effectiveness in the implementation of quality assurance standards in public secondary schools in Edo and Delta States. To guide the study, three hypotheses were raised. The study adopted the descriptive research design. The population of the study comprised all the principals and teachers in the public secondary schools in Edo and Delta States, Nigeria. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 240 principals and 720 teachers from the schools. Data was collected using ‘Administrative Effectiveness and Implementation of Quality Assurance Standards Questionnaire (AEIQASQ)’ to find out principals’ level of administrative effectiveness in the implementation of quality assurance standards using the Normative mean of 62.5 which was established from the instrument as the benchmark for effectiveness. The findings revealed that principals’ administrative effectiveness was high in the public secondary schools in Edo and Delta States. There was also a significant relationship between administrative effectiveness and implementation of quality assurance standards in the States based on principals’ gender and experience. It was therefore recommended that since principals in public schools are effective, Government should provide them with adequate funds and all necessary support to ensure that quality assurance standards are fully implemented in the schools. Also, experience and gender should be considered in appointing principals among other criteria as experienced female principals were found to be more effective.

In order to avoid social inequality of opportunity and improvement of local economies have become government policies in Turkey, as it is in other countries around the world. Incentives, regional development agencies, techno parks and also local entrepreneurs play crucial role in the improvement process of local economies. The increasing rivalry and globalization concept necessitate entrepreneurs to take more risks, to reach innovations to seize opportunities in optimum level. Entrepreneurship is a motor vessel in financial growth and in development, and entrepreneurship is also the source of innovation and creativity. In this regard, the more entrepreneurship develops in a country, the higher level of welfare possesses the chance to advance. The purpose of this report, in which it has been aimed to reveal vital role of entrepreneurship in the progress of local economies, is emphasizing the status of entrepreneurship that transformed Gaziantep’s socio-economic level of development into its present position. Thus with this aim a SWOT analysis, in terms of Gaziantep’s economic entrepreneurship has been carried out. Positive contributions of Gaziantep’s immensely developed industry, facilitation of local innovative entrepreneurs’ involvement in various local economic sectors and in accordance channeling immigration into deployment in local economy have been observed in this study. Significantly it has been observed that plenitude of “opportunist entrepreneurship” or in other words “the entrepreneurs with strategic growth plans” in this region contributed local economy positively.
