Introduction: Nurses constitute the largest percentage of the health care workers (HCW). They spend more time with patients and their compliance with hygiene practices is vital in preventing the disease transmission. It is imperative to know the nursing students’ behavior on personal habits and hygiene before being exposed to the patients during their nursing training. This study was conducted to assess the personal habits and hygiene behavior of first year BSc nursing students prior to their exposure to the patients. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at School of Nursing of Chitwan Medical College in March-April 2015. All 30 students of first year Bachelor of nursing in Science were included in the study. Validated self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 16. Results: Almost all used to wash their hairs every few days. More than 50% used to wash their hands after using handkerchief. Nearly 77% agreed to have complete bath or shower daily. Forty seven percent used to wash their hands 1-4 times a day. Nearly 77% used to change their shirt every few days and nearly 84% used change their trouser every few days. Majority of the students used to wear tie most of the times and change with clean every week. Nearly 67% used to change their socks every few days. None of them had any objection for getting vaccinated. Conclusion: The findings might reflect the prevalent practices in teenage girl students. There seems to be some gaps in health hygiene behavior among students entering into nursing education.

INTRODUCTION: Empathy on nursing education is an important element in therapeutic communication and in the type of humanized care provided, due the strengthening of the nurse-patient relationship depends on this.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the levels of empathy on nursing students of a Higher Education Institution. Cartagena de Indias/Colombia.MATERIAL & METHODS: Cross-sectional exploratory study. A sample of 320 nursing students from first to fourth year of training, to whom the Jefferson Medical Empathy Scale (JMES) was applied in the Spanish version.RESULTS: Levels of empathy are reflected more in women than in men in general. However, some values vary with respect to the average at 3.14 levels in relation to the first year of schooling.CONCLUSION: The need for a curricular redesign and favoring empathic actions by professors worthy of being imitated by students as a way of encouraging empathy when caring for patients.

Background: Promoting health is a key component of nursing practice- By helping nurses change individuals, society and healthcare system by promoting the health of individuals, families, communities and populations. Purpose: The aim of the study is to show the understanding of nursing student’s perception regarding health education and health promotion. Study design: Cross sectional study. Setting: Lahore School of Nursing, the University of Lahore. Duration: 4 months from September 2019 to December 2019. Methodology: this study was done on 135 nursing students selected through convenient sampling method from Lahore School of Nursing, the University of Lahore. Data was collected by modified questionnaire adopted from (Halcomb, 2010) to understand the perception of nursing students regarding health promotion and health education [1]. Results: This study finds out that 90% n=122 participants have positive perception regarding health promotion and health education. Although there were some signs that nursing students were introduced to the concept of health promotion as a socioecological strategy that integrates changes in the economy, policy, organization and climate. This socio-ecological approach was not viewed by the majority of student nurses as having a role modeling faculty or nurses. Conclusion: students nurses to be recognized as future high quality health promoters, collaborates with wellbeing advancement leaders, and effectively teach nursing education. There is a need to made changes in the nursing curriculum to reflect appropriate and accurate health promotion concepts and performed health promoting behaviours which have strong impact on individual health.

Backgrounds: Nowadays, the science of genetics in Indonesia has not touched the world of nursing education and practice in health care. As the first step in order to introduce genetics topic into nursing education, an assessment is needed to identify student’s knowledge and comfort toward genetics topic.Purpose: The aim of this pilot study was to identify nursing students’ knowledge about genetics.Methods: Research design used in this pilot study was descriptive with cross-sectional approach. The survey was conducted using a questionnaire that adopted and adapted from “The Genetic Needs Assessment Survey” developed by Maradique et.al. This questionnaire was distributed to nursing students at one state school of nursing in Central Java, Indonesia.Result: There were 170 nursing students participated in the pilot study. Descriptive statistic was performed and the results indicated that they were lack of knowledge about genetics topic. Most of students were not familiar to genetic terms, for example locus, missense mutation, nonsense mutation, frameshift mutation, and karyotype. Students were not comfortable to use OMIM and draw pedigree. Respondents argued that more education strategy could be applied to improve student knowledge and understanding of the genetics.Conclusion: Introduction and recognition of genetics topic in nursing education was needed. Integration of genetics topic into nursing education can be applied by the existing subject or by itself subject to students; either individually or classically.

Nursing is a caring and helpful profession and the unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well. Although nursing, as an education and a career, is on a rising trend in Nepal, there is paucity of data regarding the factors that influence choosing it. So, a cross sectional study was carried out purposively among first year nursing students who were just enrolled to study nursing in different nursing colleges in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. Structured questionnaires were distributed among 336 nursing students. Major source of inspiration to pursue nursing were their parents. The main reasons to choose nursing are to learn new things and to secure job. Major factors which contributed getting enrolled into nursing was an opportunity to care and help needy people (μ±σ=3.8±.39) and an attraction towards possibilities of working abroad in the future (μ±σ=3.4±.59). Besides, the students also felt that nursing was a noble and respectable profession where they could learn newer technologies with a better advancement. About 45.8% agreed that nursing was a profession with relatively lesser earnings and almost 40.5% disagreed that the cost of nursing education was within their payable range.It is recommended that nurses should be well paid and the vacant positions need to be fulfilled in time in both government and private sectors to motivate young students. In addition, it is time to bring advancement in their career by initiating and expanding further courses in nursing education and practice like nurse practitioner, specialization degrees and PhD inside the country.

Abstract Background The efficient management of relational competences in healthcare professionals is crucial to ensuring that a patient’s treatment and care process is conducted positively. Empathy is a major component of the relational skills expected of health professionals. Knowledge of undergraduate healthcare students’ empathic abilities is important for educators in designing specific and efficient educational programmes aimed at supporting or enhancing such competences. In this study, we measured first-year undergraduate nursing students’ attitudes towards professional empathy in clinical encounters. The students’ motivations for entering nursing education were also evaluated. This study takes a multi-method approach based on the use of qualitative and quantitative tools to examine the association between students’ positive attitudes towards the value of empathy in health professionals and their prosocial and altruistic motivations in choosing to engage in nursing studies. Methods A multi-method study was performed with 77 first-year nursing students. The Jefferson Scale of Empathy (JSE) – Health Professions Student Version was administered. Students’ motivations for choosing nursing studies were detected through an open question and thematically analysed. Using explorative factor analysis and principal component analysis, a dimensional reduction was conducted to identify subjects with prosocial and altruistic motivations. Finally, linear models were tested to examine specific associations between motivation and empathy. Results Seven distinct themes distinguishing internal and external motivational factors were identified through a thematic analysis of students’ answers regarding their decision to enter a nursing degree course. Female students gained higher scores on the empathy scale than male ones. When students’ age was considered, this difference was only observed for younger students, with young females’ total scores being higher than young males'. High empathy scores were positively associated with altruistic motivational factors. A negative correlation was found between external motivational factors and the scores of the Compassionate Care subscale of the JSE. Conclusions Knowing the level of nursing students’ empathy and their motivational factors for entering nursing studies is important for educators to implement training paths that enhance students’ relational attitudes and skills and promote the positive motivational aspects that are central to this profession.

e-Learning and other innovative open learning multimedia modalities of delivering education are being introduced to enhance learning opportunities and facilitate student access to and success in education. This article reports on a study that assessed students' readiness to make the shift from traditional learning to the technological culture of e-Learning at a university in Durban. A quasi-experimental study design was employed to assess such readiness in first year nursing students before and after an appropriate educational intervention. A modified Chapnick Readiness Score was used to measure their psychological, equipment and technological readiness for the change in learning method. It was found that, while students' psychological readiness for e-Learning was high, they lacked technological and equipment readiness. Although e-Learning could be used in nursing education, technological and equipment readiness require attention before it can be implemented effectively in this institution. Fortunately, these technical aspects are easier to resolve than improving psychological readiness.

AbstractObjectiveCritical nutrition literacy (CNL), as an increasingly important area in public health nutrition, can be defined as the ability to critically analyse nutrition information, increase awareness and participate in action to address barriers to healthy eating behaviours. Far too little attention has been paid to establishing valid instruments for measuring CNL. The aim of the present study was to assess the appropriateness of utilizing the latent scales of a newly developed instrument assessing nursing students’ ‘engagement in dietary habits’ (the ‘engagement’ scale) and their level of ‘taking a critical stance towards nutrition claims and their sources’ (the ‘claims’ scale).DesignData were gathered by distributing a nineteen-item paper-and-pencil self-report questionnaire to university colleges offering nursing education. The study had a cross-sectional design using Rasch analysis. Data management and analysis were performed using the software packages RUMM2030 and SPSS version 20.SettingSchool personnel handed out the questionnaires.SubjectsFour hundred and seventy-three students at ten university colleges across Norway responded (52 % response rate).ResultsDisordered thresholds were rescored, an under-discriminating item was discarded and one item showing uniform differential item functioning was split. The assumption of item locations being differentiated by stages was strengthened. The analyses demonstrated possible dimension violations of local independence in the ‘claims’ scale data and the ‘engagement’ scale could have been better targeted.ConclusionsThe study demonstrates the usefulness of Rasch analysis in assessing the psychometric properties of scales developed to measure CNL. Qualitative research designs could further improve our understanding of CNL scales.

Management is a process of planning, decision making, organizing, leading, motivating and controlling, and an effective utilization of the resources to reach the organizational goals efficiently and effectively. Management has a crucial role in quality of work and production in any institutions. Although a rapid increase of Nursing Education Institutions in Nepal since last decade which had been trained thousands of nursing cadres, the management aspects of these institutions are not studied adequately. Thus current study intended to explore the current status of Nursing Education Institution Management as experienced and perceived by the bachelors nursing students. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among the nursing institutions in Kathmandu valley. Of the total 28 in the valley, 14 were selected purposively. From the selected institutions, all 377 eligible students currently in final year of study were selected. Among them, 208were from BSN and 169 were from B Sc program.  The data was collected through the self administered structured questioners after taking informed consent. Data entry and analysis was done in SPSS version 16 software. The findings of the study show that 70% students were satisfied in institutional management (mean59.62, SD ± 3.66). In academic management (78%), (mean139.82, SD ± 6.22), followed by human resources 67%, (mean43.54, SD ± 2.79) and were in physical resources management 75% students were satisfied (mean45.02, SD ± 3.08). Analysis of variations between group (administrators, faculties, students) found statistical significance (p value <0.05). So it is concluded the perception of students, faculties and administrator were different on managing the nursing education.

Introduction: The coronavirus pandemic has involved nearly all the countries of the world. The lockdowns and closure of educational institutes to reduce the risk of disease transmission has brought a change in the medium of teaching as most educational institutes have moved to the online mode. There is a widespread increase in stress as the number of cases and mortality associated with Coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) continue each day. Aim: To assess the stress status of first year undergraduate medical students in reference to the coronavirus pandemic and the perception of first year undergraduate medical students in reference to the E-learning being carried out during the coronavirus pandemic. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional web-based online survey that was conducted using a questionnaire in August 2020 at Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, New Delhi, India. The questionnaire was prepared and reviewed by the involved faculty members of the project and it was approved by a faculty from Department of Psychiatry. Reliability of questionnaire was measured using Cronbach’s alpha (0.89). A questionnaire with 20 questions was administered via Google forms to all 100 students of first year MBBS course. Some of the questions in the questionnaire were framed to assess the stress status of the students; some were designed to study students’ perception of E-learning. Data was represented as the percentage distribution of response for each question. Results: Ninety five responses were received, after accounting for exclusion factors; data was compiled for 91 respondents. Out of the 91 participants in the study, 48.4% were males (n=44) and 51.6% were females (n=47). Most of the students in this study (84.6%) felt that online teaching had helped in learning Physiology theory; around 43% students found online practical teaching useful. Around 39% students have reported internet connectivity issues all the time while 59% faced problem sometimes. Total 51.6% of students had difficulty in accessibility to devices. Due to coronavirus pandemic, 37.4% of students have reported to be under stress. Around 33% reported feeling unsafe all the time while 39.5% felt unsafe some of the times. Conclusion: Students found online teaching more helpful in learning Physiology theory than practical. Majority of class reported internet connectivity issues. All the responders agreed that this pandemic affected their regular life. Most of the students felt that online classes have helped them to remain positive and motivated towards study.

ABSTRAK Latar   Belakang : Peningkatan SDM keperawatan sejak berada di Institusi pendidikan perlu mengembangkan kemampuan soft skill seperti assertive yang berpengaruh terhadap konsep diri menjadi perawat profesional. Adapun salah satu komponen konsep diri adalah self esteem perawat yang dapat digambarkan sebagai informasi dan keyakinan bahwa perawat memiliki tentang tugas, nilai, dan perilaku untuk pengembangan nilai-nilai profesional. Tujuan:  Penelitian ini bertujuan mengatahui perilaku assertive dan Self Esteem pada mahasiswa keperawatan  di STIKes Pamenang Pare Kediri pada tahun 2020. Methode: Penelitian  ini  adalah analitik digunakan  pendekatan  cross  sectional dengan spearman-rho. Populasi adalah mahasiswa keperawatan 119 dan sample 40 dengan teknik random sampling. Adapun Instrument penelitian ini kuesioner baku adalah Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS) dan Rosenberg Self Esteem (RSE). Hasil: Hasil penelitian ini adalah terdapat  hubungan signifikan yang cukup kuat dengan nilai korelasi positive antara assertive dengan self-esteem pada mahasiswa di STIKes Pamenang Pare, di karenakan mahasiswa keperawatan yang berperilaku asertif tinggi cenderung mempunyai harga diri tinggi, sehingga sangat berkaitan erat dengan kelancaran selama menjalani masa studi di pendidikan keperawatan yang menghasilkan lulusan perawat yang kompeten dan profesional. Kesimpulan: Self esteem merupakan sejauh mana individu menilai dirinya yang memiliki kemampuan, keberartian, berharga, dan kompetensi yang dapat mempengaruhi perawat bertindak profesiona sangat berkaitan dengan perilaku asertive. Sehingga semenjak di pendidikan perlu di siapkan pengelolaan assertiveness yang efektif untuk peningkatan low self esteem pada mahasiswa keperawatan. One component of the self-concept is nurses' self-esteem which can be described as information and beliefs that nurses have about duties, values, and behaviors for the development of professional values. Aims:  This aims of  research identified assertive behavior to self esteem in nursing students in Department of nursing Pamenang Health Institute Pare Kediri East Jawa in 2020. Methods: This study used analytic cross sectional approach with spearman-rho. The population nursing students were 119 and samples were  40 with random sampling techniques. This research the instruments were Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS) and Rosenberg Self Esteem (RSE). Results: The results of this research was a significant and positive corelation between assertive and self-esteem in nursing students in Department of nursing Pamenang Health Institute Pare Kediri, because nursing students with high assertive category behavior tend to have high self-esteem category, so its were closely related to fluency while undergoing a period to study in nursing education that produces competent and professional nurse graduates. Conclusion: Self-esteem was the extent to which individuals assess themselves who had abilities, meaningfulness, worth, and competence that can influence nurses to act professionally were closely related to asertive behavior. So since in education it was necessary to prepare effective assertiveness management to increase low self esteem in nursing students. Keywords: students, nurses, assertiveness, self esteem
