Introduction: Retention of nurses in any health care facilities is essential for maintaining quality nursing care. Nurses’ job satisfaction is an important issue to retain nurse in same organization. The study aimed to assess factors influencing job retention and satisfaction among nurses. Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was done among 125 nurses working in Manipal Teaching Hospital. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the sample. The semi structured self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. The collected data was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistic. Results: Majority (90.4%) of nurses were in age group 21 to 39 years, 78.4% of nurses wanted to continue their job in current organization. All the nurses agreed on timely payment of salary followed by good working relationship with colleagues (93.6%), feeling proud to tell name of organization (89.6%), adequate supplies and equipment (83.2%), safe working environment (80.6%), opportunity to develop many job skill (81.6%), supportive matron (75.2%), the financial incentives such as bonus and allowance (67.2%), higher salary compared to similar organization (64.8%) are important factors to motivate nurses to retain in current organization. Only half of the nurses (50.4%) were satisfied with their job. The significant correlation was seen between factors influencing job retention and their satisfaction level. Conclusion: The study concluded that timely payment of salary, image of organization, safe working environment and adequate equipment and supplies are important factors to retain in this organization.

Introduction: Tobacco is one of the proven risk factors, contributes substantially to the rising epidemic of non-communicable diseases. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of tobacco use and associated factors among adolescents of a selected public School in Kaski district. Non-probability purposive sampling technique was adopted and data was collected with self-administered questionnaire from 168 respondents. Results: The prevalence of tobacco-use was 19.6 percent and mean age of initiation was13.84 years. The most common reasons for smoking were peer pressure (63.3%), imitation (27.3%), family influence (27.3%) and quest for new experience (21.2%). Tobacco-use was strongly associated with ethnicity (p=0.03), mother's education level (p=0.02), father's occupation (p=0.03), peer pressure (p=0.01) and friends smoking habit (p=0.03). Conclusion: Tobacco-focused interventions are required for school going adolescents to promote cessation among users and prevent its initiation.

Abstract Background: Although the internet can be a source of reassurance and clarification for expectant women, it ‎could cause concerns or feelings of worry when reading about pregnancy-related ‎information. The current research sought to assess the feelings of worry and perceived reliability towards online pregnancy-related information and the associated factors among expectant women attending antenatal clinics at primary healthcare centers in Qatar.Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed. The participants were recruited through a systematic random sampling technique. ‎A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from the participants. Descriptive and analytic statistics were used when appropriate‎.Results: A total of 327 expecting women completed the questionnaire. Most participants were aged between 26-34 years (74.1%), held a college/university degree (76.4%), and multigravidas (73.1%). About one-third of the women ‎(31.2‎%) reported feeling worried due to something they read online. The participants coped with these feelings by consulting their antenatal care provider at the next appointment (51.0%) or by talking with relatives and friends (47.0%). Furthermore, most women (79.2%) considered online pregnancy-related information to be reliable or highly reliable. Holding a college/university degree, primigravidae, and having no children were factors significantly associated with a high perception of reliability of online health information.Conclusion: Although online pregnancy information caused feelings of worry for some pregnant ‎women, most women perceived such information to be reliable. Thus, antenatal care providers should be equipped to guide pregnant women on how to access high-quality web-based information.

Background. Needlestick and sharp injuries are a big risk to the health of nurses. Every day, nurses face the likelihood that they will injure themselves. Although many injuries will have no adverse effect, the possibility of acquiring infections like hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus, and human immunodeficiency virus can cause untold psychological harm. Nurses are in danger of injuries caused by needlestick and sharp instruments in hospitals. Objective. The objective of this study was to assess the magnitude and determinants of needlestick and/or sharp injuries among nurses working at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2018. Methods. An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 268 nurses working at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital from February to March 2018. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. A bivariate and multivariate logistic regression model was fitted to spot factors associated with needlestick and/or sharp injury. An adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval was computed to determine the level of significance. Result. The prevalence of needlestick and/or sharp injuries among nurses was 36.2% (95% CI 30.2%, 42.3%). Presence of contaminated needles and/or sharp materials in the working area ( AOR = 2.052 (95% CI 1.110, 3.791)), needle recapping after use ( AOR = 1.780 (95% CI 1.025, 3.091)), working in the pediatric ward ( AOR = 0.323 (95% CI 0.112, 0.930)), and being female ( AOR = 0.461 (95% CI 0.252, 0.845)) were significantly associated with needlestick and/or sharp injury at p value of ≤0.05. Conclusion and Recommendation. The proportion of needlestick and/or sharp injury was high among nurses. The safety of nurses depends directly on the degree to which nurses can identify and control the numerous occupational hazards specific to jobs. Thus, working unit specific safety precautions, a safe working environment, and appropriate needle and sharp disposal improve nurses’ safety practices and thereby decrease the injuries.

A work accident is an undesirable adverse event against a human, damaging property or disadvantage to the process. Data from the ILO in 2013 says that one worker die every 15 seconds due to workplace accidents. This study aims to analyze accidents in welding workers in CV. Cahaya Tiga Putri Kelurahan Sungai Sapih Kecamatan Kuranji Padang in 2017. The research design used was cross-sectional study. This research was conducted at CV. Cahaya Tiga Putri Padang located at Jalan Lolongkaran Sungai Sapih Padang in December to July 2017. The population of this research were welding workers. Samples were taken using total sampling technique, as many as 32 people. Data were analyzed univariat and bivariate with chi-square test. The result of the research shows that 46,9% of respondents have work accident, 53,1% of respondents have unsafe behavior, 53,1% of respondent have unsafe condition, 56,3% respondent have bad knowledge. From the statistical test results known there was a relationship between unsafe acts with work accidents, there was a relationship between unsafe conditions with work accidents and there was a relationship between knowledge with accidents. To reduce the number of occupational accidents, it is expected that workers should always working with using personal protective equipment (PPE), create a safe working environment and for the owner in order to improve worker knowledge by providing training and promotion of occupational health and safetty such as counseling about PPE.Key words : Work Accident, Unsafe Action, Unsafe Condition, Knowledge

Background: Blood is a body fluid responsible for transportation of nutrients, oxygen and metabolic waste. It is a non-pharmaceutical product obtained through voluntary donations. Blood transfusion is very important in the health system of any nation. Patients who are in need of blood donation expect the availability of adequate blood to satisfy their demands. Nevertheless, this is not so, mainly in third world countries like Zimbabwe where less than 6 people donate blood per 1000 populace. We need to deeply understand motivators, possible deterrents and available blood donor knowledge in order to have adequate regular voluntary non-remunerated blood donors. Methods: A cross sectional study of donors incorporating purposive sampling technique was used and a sample size of 465 was used. A self-administered questionnaire was used where donors were rating importance of: factors that motivate or deter their interest to donate blood and rate their blood donation knowledge. Statistical methods were used for reliability and correlation tests. Results: Most of the 465 participants were 1st time donors262(56.3%) and 203(43.7%) had some donation history. All donors endorsed that there exist factors that motivate them to donate blood which included the desire to help someone in need 386 (83%), good attitude of staff 419 (90%), reminders to donate381 (82%) and donor incentives 409 (88%) with their corresponding response rate. Six out of the nine suggested deterrents were endorsed as significant deterrents to blood donation. The corresponding support rate for each deterrent are absence of incentives 529(82%), poor attitude of staff 363(78%), myths and beliefs, 330(71%), feeling bad after donation, 251(54%) and the belief that blood will be sold 330(71%). Most people did not know the minimum age to donate blood as only 54 (11.61%) and only 168(36.13%) knew the correct interval between donations which should be 4 months. Only 171(36.77%) knew that blood expire. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that more donor drives needs to be taken educating people on blood donation, motivating donors to donate whenever there is blood shortage. Young donors are more attracted to concrete items as incentives and females donate more than males. Attitude of staff can motivate or demotivate donors to continue with this altruism gesture.

Introduction: Junk food consumption among adolescents has become a serious issue that may lead to harmful effects on health. Dietary patterns of people are shifting from homemade foods to junk foods. Therefore, this study was undertaken to assess the awareness and practice of junk foods among adolescents. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among adolescents of secondary level students. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the sample and the sample size was 237. Data collection was done from April 15, 2019 to May 14, 2019. A set of semi-structured self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse and interpret the findings. Results: The findings showed that more than three-fifth (67.9%) of adolescents had a moderate level of awareness about junk foods. Half (49.4%) of them consumed junk foods highly. All (100%) adolescents have consumed junk foods regularly whereas two-fifth (42.2%) replaced meals once a week with junk foods. Four-fifth (82.3%) of adolescents did not bring tiffin from home. There was no significant association between the awareness and practice of junk foods (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study concludes that most of the adolescents possessed a moderate level of awareness of junk foods. Majority of them did not bring tiffin from their home. Around half of them consumed junk foods in their daily life. Majority of them were aware of junk foods, although they still consumed junk foods.

Purpose: To investigate and describe the nature and extent of violence against nurses and the perceived effects thereof on nurses in the southern region of Malawi.Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study in which 190 questionnaires were sent out to nurses from five facilities, 112 were returned completed (60% response rate). The five facilities included two central hospitals, one psychiatric hospital and two health care centres.Results: 86% of the respondents agreed that violence against nurses is a problem in Malawi. The prevalence of violence for the five facilities in the preceding 12 months was 71% (CI 61%–79%) and was highest at the psychiatric hospital (100%). The types of violence experienced include verbal abuse (95%), threatening behaviours (73%), physical assaults (22%), sexual harassments (16%) and other (3%). Perpetrators of violence were: patients (71%); patients' relatives (47%); and work colleagues (43%). Nurses reacted to incidents of violence by reporting to managers, telling their friends, crying, retaliating, or ignoring the incident. Most (80%) nurses perceived that violence has psychological effects on them, which consequently affects their work performance and make them lose interest in the nursing profession.Conclusions: Workplace violence against nurses exists in Malawi and it affects nurses psychologically; may result in poor work performance; and may be a causative factor in the attrition of nurses from the nursing profession. The study recommends that health facilities should adopt policies aimed at minimizing violence against nurses to create motivating and safe working environment for nurses.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding provides an unequalled way of infant nutrition, despite that, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months in Egypt is only 13%, and the rates of artificial feeding are rising. AIM: The current study aimed to explore the reasons for the use of artificial feeding among mothers receiving subsidised milk from formula dispensing centres in Egypt, and to detect the reasons behind the use of a formula only for infant feeding rather than mixed breastfeeding and artificial feeding. METHODS: This exploratory cross-sectional study involved 197 mothers; who attended centres for dispensing subsidised artificial formula at primary health care facilities (PHC) in El-Fayom and Ismailia governorates via a purposive sampling technique. The study spanned over 6-months duration from June till December 2018. RESULTS: A statistically significant higher percentage of artificial feeding only was noticed in male infants (47.5% in the AF group only versus 28.7% in the mixed feeding group (p = 0.018), and infants aged 6-12 months (47.5% in the AF group only versus 28.7% in the mixed feeding group, p = 0.032). A statistically significant higher percentage of artificial feeding only was noticed among infants born to mothers who have general anaesthesia during labour (67.2% in the AF group only versus 41.9% in the mixed feeding group, p = 0.004), and among infants born to mothers who think that formula feeding is better (13.1% in the AF group only versus 0.7% in the mixed feeding group, or that formula has a similar quality to breast milk (6.6%% in the AF group only versus 4.4% in the mixed feeding group, p = 0.0004. The most common reasons for formula feeding reported by both groups were perceived breast milk insufficiency (60.9%), weak babies (50.3%), and doctors’ advice (37%). Previous negative breastfeeding experience and the need for own body privacy were the two reasons which differed statistically in both groups p = 0.004 and 0.008, respectively. CONCLUSION: antenatal care education is essential to improve mothers’ knowledge and practice of breastfeeding. Baby-friendly hospital initiative implementation is essential to ensure early initiation and continuation of breastfeeding.

Abstract Objective: To explore Kufa medical students’ preferences of carrier specialization and to investigate the factors that influence their choice of specialty. Methods: By using a non-probability convenience sampling technique, a cross-sectional study was performed on (566) medical students from the second-to-sixth-year in University of Kufa, from the 27th of January to the 21st of February 2019 to study the factors that affect the choice of specialties in undergraduate medical students. An anonymous, structured, self-administered questionnaire was handed out to the students and consisted of three sections covering demographic data, the preferred specialty, and the cause behind selecting the specialty.  Data analysis was performed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 25 for windows. Results: Cardiology was the most chosen specialty 55 (9.7%) followed by Pediatrics 46 (8.1%) and Dermatology 45 (8.0%). Additionally, 40 (7.1%) students haven’t decided their specialties yet. The most chosen factors in a descending fashion were "My Passion" which was chosen by 427 (75.4%) students, followed by "income" 67 (11.8%), "less on-call duties" 51 (9.0%), "mentor inspiration" 46 (8.1%), "family member inspiration" 34 (6.0%), "reputation" 22 (3.8%), "less competition" 15 (2.6%), and "number of residency years" 8 (1.4%). Conclusion: Being passionate about or having a keen interest in the selected speciality were the major influencing factors for students to select their future speciality. However, male students' choices based mainly on the “income” and “reputation” of the field, while females opted to choose “less on call duties” more than males. Continuous...
