Introduction: Crowding in mandibular arch increases with increasing age and etiology of crowding is multifactorial in nature. Role of mandibular third molar in lower anterior crowding remains a topic of controvery over a period of century. The objective of this study was to assess whether there is any correlation between presence of mandibular third molar position and lower anterior crowding. Materials and Method: On the basis of third molar position one hundred and six sample of pretreatment orthodontic patients aged between 17 to 38 years were divided into erupted, erupting and agenesis group. The study was conducted in Peoples Dental College and Hospital from January 2020 to March 2020 after obtaining ethical approval from the institutional review committee. This cross-sectional study was done on dental casts and orthopantomogram; brass wire was used for measuring arch length and digital vernier caliper for measuring tooth material with modified segmental arch analysis method. Result: Among 106 samples collected 55 (51.88%) were female and 51(48.11%) were male and the mean age was 21.53 ± 3.91 years, Chi square and ANOVA test was used for Statistical analysis. This study showed no statistically significant differences between third molar position and lower anterior crowding on right (P= 0.68) and left side (P = 0.45). The study also showed that association between the third molar position and lower anterior crowding is more on left side compared to right side. Conclusion: Mandibular third molars have not statistically significant difference in lower anterior crowding so, extraction of third molars for relieving the anterior crowding is not justifiable

Background: Few studies have been reported so far on the frequency of lower third molar impactions in patients with different morphological characteristics. Our aim in this study was to find out the frequency of impacted lower third molars in orthodontic patients with different antegonial notch depths. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional research was conducted at Orthodontics Department of Dental Section, Faisalabad Medical University, Faisalabad, and de’Montmorency College of Dentistry, Lahore, Pakistan from June 2017 to June 2019. A total of 60 orthopantomograms (OPGs) of patients with impacted lower third molars were included. The depth of antegonial notch was calculated on all the selected OPGs by measuring distance between the deepest area of the notch cavity and the tangent on the inferior border of the mandible. The patients with depth of antegonial notch of 1 mm or less were labeled as having shallow antegonial notch, while those with 3 mm or more were considered as having deep antegonial notch. Percentages and mean + SD were calculated for different variables. Depth of antegonial notching was compared between genders using ANOVA with P-value <0.5 considered as significant. Results: Of 60 orthodontic patients, there was an equal number of male and female patients (n=30). The average age of the patients was 25.5±4 years. Overall frequency of impactions was similar in both the genders and frequency of impacted lower third molars was found to be greater in patients with deeper antegonial notches. Conclusion: Mandibular third molar impactions were most frequent in orthodontic patients with deep antegonial notches

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the correlation of chronological age with the maturation stages of mandibular third molar. METHODOLOGY: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at Sardar Begum Dental College, Gandhara University Peshawar on 384 patients from January 2018 to June 2018 and included patients having age 11-26 years with good quality Orthopantomogram showing mandibular third molar tooth germs bilaterally. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22. p ≤ 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. RESULTS: Females 286 (74.5%) were predominant than males 98 (25.5%) with mean age presentation of 18.12±3.03 years. The most frequent stage of Demirjian’s stages of mandibular third molar was stage F (24.7%). Pearson correlation showed that maturation stages of mandibular third molars were significantly related to the chronological age ( r=0.446, p value=0.00). CONCLUSION: A correlation between maturation stages of mandibular third molars and chronological age existed.

Background: Odontectomy of lower third molar has a potential risk for inferior alveolar nerve impairment. Paresthesia of inferior alveolar nerve has often been associated with close relationship between the apex of lower third molar and mandibular canal. Rood and Shehab’s category has been commonly used for radiological prediction of inferior alveolar nerve injury following third molar surgery. Purpose: This study aimed to determine whether there was correlation between Rood and Shehab’s radiographic features and the incidence of inferior alveolar nerve paraesthesia following odontectomy of lower third molar. Method: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study, using data obtained from the dental record of patients who had undergone odontectomy of lower third molars in Dental hospital of Universitas Airlangga during 2 years period. Samples were cases that, from presurgical radiograph, showed close relationship between lower third molar roots and mandibular canal. The case and non-case groups were assigned based on the presence of paraesthesia and non-paraesthesia of inferior alveolar nerves, respectively. Based on Rood and Shehab’s category, the samples collected were then classified into two groups which were those whose relationship matched and did not match with the category, respectively. Data were analyzed using Chi-square correlation test. Result: Of 975 odontectomy cases included in this study, 80 cases were taken as study samples consisting of 15 and 65 cases assigned, respectively, as case and non-case. The 32 cases matched with the criteria of Rood and Shehab's category while the remainder of 48 cases did not. Of 32 cases which met the criteria of Rood and Shehab’s relationship, only 5 cases showed paraesthesia, whereas out of 48 cases which did not met the criteria 10 cases showed paraesthesia. Statistical analysis showed significance value of 0.770 (p>0.05) indicating that there was no significant correlation between relations of third molar root and mandibular canal, based on Rood and Shehab’s category, and the incidence of inferior alveolar nerve paraesthesia. Conclusion: There was no correlation between Rood and Shehab’s radiographic features and the incidence of paraesthesia of inferior alveolar nerve following odontectomy of lower third molars.

Introduction: The positional relationship between the mandibularcanal with impacted mandibular third molar is the main factor of inferior alveolar nerve injury. The purpose of this study wasto classify the anatomical three dimensional relationship between the proximity of impacted mandibular third molars to the inferior alveolar canal. Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted inthe Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of a tertiary care hospital from July 2020 to August 2020 after obtaining ethical approval from the Institutional Review Committee (Reference number 2506202001). Cone-beam computed tomography images of 200 patients’ mandibular third molars were used. A convenient sampling method was used. Data were analyzed using Statistical package for the Social Sciences. Results: Mandibular canal relative to the roots of the mandibular third molar was observed on the apical side in 104 (52.0%) and 173 (86.5%) third molars had direct contact with the mandibular canal. About 36 (97.3%) lingually placed mandibular third molars had contact with the mandibular canal. Conclusions: The findings of the study conclude that most of the mandibular third molars situated lingually had a higher occurrence of mandibular nerve involvement. The anatomic structures of the mandibular third molar and the mandibular canal may be helpful to draw upon the adequate surgical plan to avoidor reduce nerve involvement.

Abstract Background: The role and involvement of mandibular third molars on mandibular incisor crowding, post retention, in orthodontically treated patients has long been debated. The correlations between lower anterior crowding and lower third molar angulation and space are not completely understood. Aim: To assess the lower third molar space and its angulation in individuals with lower anterior crowding and to compare it with that of individuals without lower anterior crowding. Settings and design: Hospital based Prospective, cross-sectional study on randomly selected individuals. Materials and Methods: Lower third molar space and angulations were measured and compared using orthopantomograph tracings of 80 subjects in the age group of 20-30 years with skeletal Class I malocclusion individuals without lower anterior crowding(Group A) and individuals with lower anterior crowding (Group B). Statistical Analysis: Both the space and angulations of lower third molar were correlated with the lower anterior crowding using Pearson Correlation Coefficient. Results: Significant differences were found in third molar space between the study group and the control group. But there was no significant difference in third molar angulation between the groups. Conclusion: the lower anterior crowding has a significant influence on third molar space but did not have any effect on third molar angulation.

Purpose The aims of this study were to characterize hearing symptoms, habits, and sound pressure levels (SPLs) of personal audio system (PAS) used by young adults; estimate the risk of developing hearing loss and assess whether instructions given to users led to behavioral changes; and propose recommendations for PAS users. Method A cross-sectional study was performed in 50 subjects with normal hearing. Procedures included questionnaire and measurement of PAS SPLs (real ear and manikin) through the users' own headphones and devices while they listened to four songs. After 1 year, 30 subjects answered questions about their usage habits. For the statistical analysis, one-way analysis of variance, Tukey's post hoc test, Lin and Spearman coefficients, the chi-square test, and logistic regression were used. Results Most subjects listened to music every day, usually in noisy environments. Sixty percent of the subjects reported hearing symptoms after using a PAS. Substantial variability in the equivalent music listening level (Leq) was noted ( M = 84.7 dBA; min = 65.1 dBA, max = 97.5 dBA). A significant difference was found only in the 4-kHz band when comparing the real-ear and manikin techniques. Based on the Leq, 38% of the individuals exceeded the maximum daily time allowance. Comparison of the subjects according to the maximum allowed daily exposure time revealed a higher number of hearing complaints from people with greater exposure. After 1 year, 43% of the subjects reduced their usage time, and 70% reduced the volume. A volume not exceeding 80% was recommended, and at this volume, the maximum usage time should be 160 min. Conclusions The habit of listening to music at high intensities on a daily basis seems to cause hearing symptoms, even in individuals with normal hearing. The real-ear and manikin techniques produced similar results. Providing instructions on this topic combined with measuring PAS SPLs may be an appropriate strategy for raising the awareness of people who are at risk. Background: The palatal rugae are special constructions that are inalterable in their position and pattern during the lifestyles of an individual. This imparts them an exceptional role in the forensic dentistry and may play potential role in malocclusion identification. This study was aimed to see association of rugae pattern with sagittal skeletal malocclusion in orthodontic patients visiting tertiary care hospital. Methods: This cross-sectional examination was completed on pretreatment records (lateral Cephalometric radiographs and maxillary dental casts) of 384 subjects at the orthodontic department of Ziauddin Dental Hospital, Karachi. The study duration was from January to July 2019. The samples were sub-divided into three sagittal skeletal groups based on ANB angle proposed by Steiner’s on lateral Cephalometric radiographs (Class I with ANB angle between 0° to 4°; Class II: ANB angle greater than 5°; Class III: ANB angle less than 0°). The shapes of three most-anterior primary rugae were then evaluated bilaterally using Kapali et al., Classification. Chi Square test was applied to find association of rugae pattern among sagittal skeletal malocclusions groups. Results: Circular and curved rugae shapes were the most prevalent in all skeletal malocclusions. The primary palatal rugae pattern was seen to be significantly different among three skeletal malocclusion groups (p<0.05). The right and left sided palatal rugae pattern showed significant difference in all three skeletal malocclusion groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The present study showed no specific palatal rugae pattern associated with sagittal skeletal malocclusion. Further studies on larger sample and use of modern 3D technologies to scan the maxillary casts are required for results that are more precise.

The study was aimed to assess the breastfeeding practices among mothers of infants in Peringara Gramapanchayat in Kerala. Study was a community based cross-sectional study among mothers of infants in Peringara gramapanchayat using a pretested questionnaire. 142 breastfeeding mothers of infants in Peringara gramapanchayat were studied and mothers who were not present at home during the study were excluded from the study. Study period consisted of 18 days between December 2015 and January 2016. Study variables includes type of delivery, initiation of breastfeeding, breastfeeding practices and role of ASHAs in promoting good breastfeeding practices. Statistical analysis was done using Pearson’s Chi-square test and T test. The study found that exclusive breastfeeding has been done by 68.3% of mothers. There is no practice of giving pre-lacteal feed, 95.8% of mothers have given colostrum to the new born. Statistically significant association was found between the type of delivery and time of initiation of breastfeeding (p less than 0.05). Time of initiation of breastfeeding was prolonged in case of Caesarean section. 49.3% of mothers have breastfed the baby within one hour. 55.6% of mothers were informed about importance of breastfeeding by ASHAs and only 20.4% of mothers were informed about period of exclusive breastfeeding and period of complimentary feeding by ASHAs.

Background: The aim of the study was to assess the attitude of the school and college-going students towards online classes. Methods: An online cross-sectional study was conducted on 228 school and college-going students fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria selected through purposive sampling methods. A semi-structured online questionnaire consisting of a socio-demographic questionnaire and Attitude towards online classes (ATOC) questionnaire was prepared by the researcher using Google form. The link of the questionnaire was sent to all the selected respondents through WhatsApp messages and emails. The data was analyzed using the IBM SPSS version 20 software. The reliability of the attitude questionnaire was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha test. The association between categorical variables was assessed using Chi-square tests. The comparison between variables was assessed using the students independent t-test.Results: More than half of the respondents (51.32%) were found with a positive attitude towards online classes. There was a significant association found between attitude towards online classes and socio-demographic variables such as age (p<0.05), academic level (p<0.05), and family income (p<0.01). The respondents who attended online classes (p<0.05), have technical knowledge (p<0.01), and got supported by their parents in the study (p<0.05) were found significantly high positive attitudes towards online classes. There was a significant difference found in the attitude of the respondents who faced psychological disturbances such as a decline in attention-concentration (p<0.05), irritation-anger (p<0.01), and tension (p<0.05) due to online classes.Conclusions: Although, online classes are more beneficial for the students and teachers in their academic activities during the lockdown period due to the COVID-19 pandemic but it can’t take place of traditional face-to-face classes.
