The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the GB regulator for health and safety at work. The HSE Health and Work (H&W) program designs and carries out a wide range of interventions; including inspection, enforcement and other regulatory activities as well as prevention; targeting priority health conditions in high-risk sectors. It is anticipated that long-term, sustainable and coordinated actions developed as part of the program will over time improve awareness, behaviors, control of exposures, and, as a result, prevent work-related ill health in GB workforce. An HSE Measuring Strategy, together with measurement framework and principles, has been developed. The measurement framework draws together data systems, covering Attitudes (A), Behaviors (B), Control of exposures (C), and Disease and work-related ill health reduction (D), based on a simple model to provide evidence required for evaluating the short, medium and long term impacts of the large scale and complex H&W program on the GB health and safety system. The Strategy gives a new focus on measuring behavioral changes and risk reductions; and emphasizes longitudinal measurement designs to assess progress over time. For developing the Strategy, workshops were organized to bring stakeholders across HSE to review existing systems for conducting population surveys, collecting exposure intelligence and occupational health surveillance, which have contributed to forming a long-term vision of fit-for-purpose measurement systems. We will present the development of the Strategy and the plans to implement it with the H&W program, which requires close collaborations between epidemiologists and social researchers, policy makers, and other multidisciplinary regulatory specialists. The lessons learnt will help HSE towards building the right evidence base for monitoring and evaluation of a range of national level intervention programs for work-related ill health prevention.©British Crown copyright (2019)

The future of Cambridge University is discussed in the context of the current British and global situation of universities, the main focus being on what the core concerns of a major university should be at this time. After raising issues related to core intellectual values (truth-seeking, rationality in argument, balanced judgement, integrity, linguistic precision and critical questioning) and the sustaining of a long-term social and intellectual ecology, four main challenges are identified: uniting teaching and research fruitfully; interrelating fields of knowledge appropriately across a wide range of disciplines; contributing to society in ways that are responsible towards the long-term flourishing of our world; and sustaining and reinventing collegiality so that the university can be a place where intensive, disciplined conversations within and across generations can flourish. The latter leads into questions of polity, governance and management. Finally, the inseparability of teaching, research and knowledge from questions of meaning, value, ethics, collegiality and transgenerational responsibility leads to proposing ‘wisdom’ as an integrating concept. The relevant sources of wisdom available are both religious and secular, and in a world that is complexly both religious and secular we need universities that can be places where both are done justice. Given the seriousness and long-term nature of the conflicts associated with religious and secular forces in our world, it is especially desirable that universities in their education of future generations contribute to the healing of such divisions.

The much awaited and intensely negotiated Paris Agreement was adopted on 12 December 2015 by the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The agreement set out a more ambitious long-term temperature goal than many had anticipated, implying more stringent emissions reductions that have been under-explored by the research community. By its very nature a multidisciplinary challenge, filling the knowledge gap requires not only climate scientists, but the whole Earth system science community, as well as economists, engineers, lawyers, philosophers, politicians, emergency planners and others to step up. To kick start cross-disciplinary discussions, the University of Oxford's Environmental Change Institute focused its 25th anniversary conference upon meeting the challenges of the Paris Agreement for science and society. This theme issue consists of review papers, opinion pieces and original research from some of the presentations within that meeting, covering a wide range of issues underpinning the Paris Agreement. This article is part of the theme issue ‘The Paris Agreement: understanding the physical and social challenges for a warming world of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels'.

Landfill leachate is a problem that has to be dealt with not only today but also in the near anddistant future. Generally, leachate production takes place after the closure as well as duringthe operation of a landfill. As previous studies show the process of leachate output continuesfor decades if not centuries after the end of the landfill operation. Therefore the problem ofleachate output, and subsequently its treatment, remains after the closure. Another importantfact is that leachate characteristics vary within a wide range over time in quantity and quality.A lot of research has been done in order to investigate the efficiency of different leachatetreatment processes. Since no standard treatment system has been developed so far, a numberof different systems have been implemented. In Germany about 150 leachate treatment plants were operated in full scale, in 1998. Mainlythree different systems are applied. The most common treatment system consists of acombination of a biological stage and an activated carbon filtration. Another frequently usedsystem combines biology and reverse osmosis. Thirdly, the combination of biology andchemical oxidation is used relatively often. Other feasible systems with different processcombinations are used in practice. In any case it is remarkable that nearly all systems includea biological stage.Although the described treatment systems are already in use for a number of years, many ofthem still have serious operational problems. This results mainly from their complex technicalstructure which makes it difficult to solve the problems. An additional obstacle is the longterm operation of such systems. It is unlikely that today's high-tech treatment systems withhigh operational costs and maintenance expenditure will be operated over the leachate outputperiod. Further research should therefore concentrate on developing simple, reliabletechniques that can be operated without maintenance. Since all present treatment systems areset up with biological stages it seems reasonable to examine whether biological processes canbe used individually for long-term leachate treatment. For this reason we are currentlyinvestigating the performance of soil filters with regard to Ammonia removal from landfillleachate at the University of Wuppertal.

Stress is inevitable in the modern life for people to make a living, however, prolonged stress will negatively affect their lives. This study, investigating impacts of stress on 986 university lecturers at The University of Danang, Viet Nam, used the PSS stress test to measure stress among participants. The results showed that there were a wide range of stressors for university lecturers, such as work-related problems, personal advancement, family relationships, work pressure, wages, and problems with friends. Our analysis showed that there were 176 lectures (39,9%) having signs of stress, of which 63 (15.1%) suffered high stress. Female lecturers suffered greater stress than their male colleagues. Based on our interview with those lecturers, we found that a better work policy such as increasing wages and reducing working hours can help reduce work-related stress. The paper highlighted the effects of stress on university lecturers’ performance as well as proposing solutions to reduce stress among university lecturers in Viet Nam.

This publication provides considerable material for reflection on the subject of Mediterranean Architecture between Heritage and Innovation, demonstrating the wide range of aspects linked to Architectural Technology, in which one is struck by the flexibility of the disciplinary boundaries with regard to the various meanings that can be applied to the concept of resource. Taken together with the previous publications of Osdotta, this consents one to trace the developments in the third level of education at a particularly critical time for the university institution; the emphasis continues to be placed on the crucial issue of supply/demand of research; the situation is compared with other institutions and with the world of production in this sector, in a present-day scenario dominated by ever more rapid and incisive transformations. The main challenges left to be faced are to improve the quality of PhD courses, after due reflection on the immediate and long-term results, whilst defining more precisely the identitary contents of the disciplinary sector.

In recent years an increasing emphasis has been placed on the study of high temperature intermetallic compounds for possible aerospace applications. One group of interest is the B2 aiuminides. This group of intermetaliics has a very high melting temperature, good high temperature, and excellent specific strength. These qualities make it a candidate for applications such as turbine engines. The B2 aiuminides exist over a wide range of compositions and also have a large solubility for third element substitutional additions, which may allow alloying additions to overcome their major drawback, their brittle nature. One B2 aluminide currently being studied is cobalt aluminide. Optical microscopy of CoAl alloys produced at the University of Missouri-Rolla showed a dramatic decrease in the grain size which affects the yield strength and flow stress of long range ordered alloys, and a change in the grain shape with the addition of 0.5 % boron.
