The effect of monosodium glutamate on lymphoid organs remains insufficiently studied. Also, no less relevant is the issue of correction of changes caused by the action of monosodium glutamate. The aim of the study was to study the electron microscopic changes in the parenchyma of the lymph nodes of rats under the action of monosodium glutamate for six weeks and during correction with melatonin. The experimental study was performed on 66 white male and female rats of reproductive age. The structure of mesenteric lymph nodes of white rats under the conditions of physiological norm at the electron microscopic level was studied in 10 intact animals. Experimental animals were divided into 4 groups, each with 10 animals. The control was 16 white rats, which instead of a high-calorie diet (HCD) received a standard diet of vivarium. HCD was achieved by adding to the diet of monosodium glutamate at a dose of 0.07 g/kg body weight of rats. The dose of melatonin was 10 mg/kg body weight of rats, administered orally daily at the same time in the afternoon. The electron microscopic structure of the mesenteric lymph nodes of male and female rats of reproductive age of the intact and control groups corresponds to the species norm. The study showed that monosodium glutamate causes changes in the parenchyma of the lymph nodes as in alimentary obesity. After six weeks of HCD, the number of apoptically altered lymphocytes increases. That part of lymphocytes, which has no signs of karyorrhexis or karyolysis, has a karyolemma with deep intussusception, the cytoplasm is enlightened, the tubules of the granular endoplasmic reticulum in cells with signs of edema, dilated, mitochondrial ridges swollen, damaged. There are profound destructive changes in the cellular composition of the organ and violations at the level of all parts of the vascular bed. After six weeks of melatonin correction, the number of macrophages and plasma cells decreased, in some lymphocytes the nucleolus is not clearly expressed, the karyolemma is uneven, the cytoplasm is enlightened, the number of osmophilic (fatty) inclusions decreases both in the intercellular space and in the cytoplasm of the cell. Therefore, the introduction of melatonin led to a significant restoration of the structural organization, and hence the function of this organ.

An adult dog with ataxia and a lingual mass, previously diagnosed as protothecosis, was euthanized. At the postmortem examination, the lingual mass, regions of the lungs and hilar lymph nodes, liver, mesenteric and sublumbar lymph nodes, and spinal meninges had pronounced green discoloration. Histologically, pyogranulomatous inflammation and algal organisms were found in the tongue, spinal meninges, hilar and mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, and lung. The algae had cell walls positive for periodic acid-Schiff and cytoplasmic granules. Ultrastructurally, the algae had a well-defined cell wall, stacks of grana and thylakoid membrane, and dense bodies, typical of starch granules. The organisms were identified as Chlorella, a green alga, based on the results of histochemistical and electron microscopic examination. To the author's knowledge this is the first report of disseminated Chlorella infection and the first report in a companion animal.

The present study was undertaken to examine the structural features of the thymus and cranial mesenteric lymph nodes of newborn rats that have occurred as a result of antenatal alcohol intoxication. We used a set of morphometric, anatomical and histological methods. A study of the cranial mesenteric lymph nodes performed on 45 newborn rats born to 18 female mongrel white rats seven months of age. The studies were conducted in compliance with the order of the Ministry of Health of the USSR N 755 from 12.08.1977 and the order of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the USSR from 13.11.1984, "On the rules of work with experimental animals". Females, on which was received investigated offspring exposed to 15 % ethanol as the sole source of fluid for 1 week, one and three months before pregnancy, during pregnancy and after its completion. It is shown that depending on the duration of pregravid exposure to ethanol occur progredient changes in the structure of the thymus and cranial mesenteric lymph nodes. In the thymus, as well as in the lymph nodes, decreases the number of lymphoid cells and stromal elements content increases. In lymph nodes there are significant changes in the structure of the sinus system. The severity of the identified morphological changes due to the duration of the effects of alcohol on the system "mother-placenta-fetus”.

The aim: To study morphometric and electron microscopic changes in the parenchyma of rat lymph nodes under the action of sodium glutamate and its correction by orlistat. Materials and methods: The article presents and analyzes the data of an experimental study conducted on 66 white male rats and females of reproductive age. Experimental animals are divided into 4 groups. Results: After six weeks of exposure to monosodium glutamate, there was a significant decrease in the relative area of the cortical substance in the lymph nodes of white male and female rats by 11.95% and 9.31% and, respectively, an increase in the relative area of the medullary substance by 18.76% and 14.7% in compared with an intact group of animals. After six weeks of sodium glutamate and the next six weeks of the standard diet of vivarium and orlistat, the relative area of the cortical substance in the lymph node parenchyma was 2.55% and 0.38% more than the parameters of the intact group of animals, respectively. Accordingly, the relative area of the medullary substance decreased and was 4.01% and 0.59% less compared to the intact group of animals. Conclusions: Electron microscopic examination showed that monosodium glutamate causes changes in the parenchyma of the lymph nodes as in a high-calorie diet. The introduction of orlistat (xenical) leads to a partial restoration of the structural organization, and hence the function of this organ.

Prebiotics may increase Zn absorption, a mineral known to play a central role in the immune system. Zn-deficient states are characterised by suppressed immune function, while prebiotics may improve both gut and cell-mediated immunity. Our objective was to determine if inulin alters the number and proportion of immune cells in the spleen, mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) and Peyer's patches (PP),ex vivocytokine secretion, intestinal permeability and Zn status in healthy as well as Zn-deficient rats. Weanling female rats were fed diets supplemented with 5 % cellulose (CEL) or 5 % inulin (PRE) for 4 weeks. The rats received the CEL or PRE dietad libitum(ZN) or in restricted amounts (DR), or deficient in Zn (ZD) for another 4 weeks. The PRE-fed rats had a higher number and proportion of dendritic cells in PP, and greaterex vivosecretion of IL-2, IL-10 and interferon-γ from spleen and MLN cells compared with CEL-fed rats. PRE reduced the number and proportion of T cell receptor (TCR)-αβ+CD8+cells in spleen and CD45RA+cells in MLN compared with CEL. ZD rats had lower serum IgG2a and T cell numbers in MLN compared with ZN and DR rats. TCRγδ+cell numbers in PP were higher in ZD-PRE rats compared with ZD-CEL rats. Femur Zn concentrations of DR-PRE rats were higher than those of DR-CEL rats. Intestinal permeability was unchanged. The higher proportion and number of dendritic cells in the PP of inulin-fed rats indicates a need for further research on how prebiotics and their metabolites affect immune function possibly through intestinal dendritic cells.

Prolonged survival of Islet- allo- and xenografts can be induced following implantation of the islets into the abdominal testis of diabetic rats. We previously showed that a factor released by Sertoli cells appears to be responsible for the protection of the intratesticular islet allo- and xenografts against rejection. The aim of this study was to examine whether an immunologically privileged site can be established in an organ site in vivo, other than the testis, such as the renal, subcapsular space, to make feasible the grafting of female recipients as well. A total of 36 male and 21 female, diabetic, PVG rats were divided into six different treatment groups: 1) Six male rats were grafted with islets from Sprague-Dawley (S-D) donor rats only. 2) Ten male rats were grafted with islets from (S-D) donors and were then given a short course of cyclosporine (CsA) posttransplantation. 3) Ten male rats were grafted with islets from (S-D) donors and with Sertoli cell-enriched fractions (SEF) from PVG donors but without CsA. 4) Ten male rats were grafted with a combination of islets from (S-D) and SEF from (PVG), donors, respectively, and CsA. 5) Ten female rats were given an identical combination of cells and CsA as depicted for group 5.6) Ten female rats were grafted with a combination of islets and SEF, both cell types from S-D donors, and CsA. The results showed that 70% to 100% of the grafted rats in groups 1, 2, and 3 remained hyperglycemic. Prolonged normoglycemia in excess of 100 days was induced in more than 75% of the grafted rats only in groups 4,5, and 6, or in those animals who were grafted with a combination of islets and SEF and who were given a short course of CsA as well. Electron microscopic examination of the grafted tissues showed the presence of intact beta cells and of cells with features characteristic of Sertoli cells. Our results suggest that 1) the protection of islet allografts in nonimmunologically privileged site can be achieved in male and female rats by means of the simultaneous transplantation of Sertoli cells. 2) Sertoli cells apparently maintain the capacity to secrete an immune inhibitor in organ sites other than the testis. We conclude that it is feasible to create an immunologically privileged site for the transplantation of isolated islets in male and female diabetic recipients without the need for sustained immunosuppression.

1. Studies were performed with female rats to examine the effect of various levels of orally administered oxytetracycline on body-weight, weight of various portions of the intestinal tract, weight of mesenteric lymph nodes, distribution pattern of the tissue elements in the terminal portion of the ileum, and on the susceptibility to invasion bySalmonella typhi-murium.2. There was no growth promotion resulting from any antibiotic treatment. A consistent finding was the decrease in the wet weight of mesenteric lymph nodes in the rats given antibiotic.3. In the bacteriological test, no differences between antibiotic-fed and control groups were observed in isolations from the liver, spleen or intestinal tissue. It was concluded that there were no effects of oxytetracycline administration on invasive capacity of orally administeredS. typhi-murium.

Background:The modern immunology is targeted to the detailed study of various immunopathological conditions at the molecular and cellular level, development of new methods for the prevention, diagnostics and treatment of contagious and non-contagious diseases of humans and animals.Methods:In the present work we took the rats with model of cyclophosphamide-induced immunodeficiency and studied the features of gender impact of the complex extract of immunocompetent organs (thymus, spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes) Sus scrofa and its separate fraction with molecular weight less than 30 kDa administered to male and female rats.Results:The impact of gender differences and tissue-specific biomolecules (30 kDa fraction) on hematological parameters (leukocytes, erythrocytes, platelets), functional activity of immune system (IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, complement system, IgG, IgM), biochemical parameters of hepatocytes functioning (activity of ALP and LDG), carbohydrate metabolism (glucose) and lipid metabolism (triglycerides).Conclusion:Decrease of ALP activity is caused by inhibition of bile formation in a liver after introduction of cytostatic agent, and in contrast to complex extract, the administration of fraction 30 kDa allows improving bile production in male rats.
