The article describes the main indicators of a grapes crop quality - a sugar content in the juice of grapes and a titratable acidity, which give a special taste to the main production of technical kinds of grapes - dry wines. The methods and tools of the laboratory analysis of these indicators, as well as the methodology of a field experience are described . The results of laboratory and field experiments, conducted in 2015 in the areas of an ampelography and clonal selection department of NSC of "Institute for Winegrowing and Winemaking named after V. E. Tairov" are represented. The quality of grapes crop was determined for three grades - Odessa Muscat, Sukholimansky white and Odessa black (respectively medium, later than average and late ripening). Analysis of grape quality indicators was carried out in the dynamics during ripening (from the beginning of ripening to a technical maturity) in four replications for 40 plants on three tiers of the bush - the upper, middle and lower. It was executed the calculations of glucoacidimetric indicator (GAP) value for grades Odessa Muscat, Sukholimansky white and Odessa black. The following conclusions were obtained. The greatest rate of change of grapes quality indicators of different ripening technical kinds is observed for the grape with the lowest grade ripening period – Odessa Muscat. The resulting calculations indicate sufficient indicators value to obtain good quality wine materials for making high quality wines.

Abstract Nowadays the study of the interrelation of the genotype of strawberry plants in garden and climatic conditions is extremely relevant. Due to the various systems of genetic control and the modifying effects of growing conditions on the manifestation of quantitative traits, there is the need to assess the genotypic variability of economically valuable features, focused on the identification of genotypes characterized by stability and adaptive qualities in growing conditions. The study examined 15 varieties of garden strawberries of domestic and foreign selection. The field experiments and surveys were carried out according to the Program generally accepted in the Russian Federation and methodology for the variety study of fruit, berry and nut crops. We studied such features as the number of peduncles (pcs/bush), number of berries (pcs/bush), average weight of berries (g), total and marketable yield (g/bush), sugar content in berries, soluble solids and ascorbic acid. The purpose of this work was to assess the genotype-year interrelation in terms of the variability of productivity features and berry quality and to identify strawberry varieties with a stable genotype. As a result of two-way analysis of variance for the variety-year interrelation, the obtained values were 1.10-8.50 at standard Fst. - 1.24. Statistically important differences had indicators of productivity of a bush between the first and second clusters (t = 5.89 at p <0.01), the first and third (t = 15.83 at p <0.01), the second and third clusters (t = 8.13 at p <0.01), as well as the average berry weight between the first and third, second and third clusters (t = 15.50 and 6.99 at p <0.01, respectively). Significant differences in the value of the Euclidean distance were revealed for varieties Mishutka (54.5), Daryonka (54.5), Pervoklassnitsa (58) realizing their productivity potential in different years of cultivation.

The nutritional value of table beets is determined by a high content of sugars, a peculiar composition of nitrogenous substances. This culture is a source of the natural dye betanin, which has anti-carcinogenic, antibacterial and antiviral effects on the human body. The article presents the results of a study of biochemical qualities of root crops of table beet. Research was conducted in the period 2014–2019 on 6 varieties of beet of table selection of the Poisk Agrо Holding. Widespread samples of domestic and Dutch breeding Bordo 237 (FSCVG) and Pablo F1 (Bejo), zoned in all regions of the Russian Federation, were taken as a standard. Field experiments were performed according to a single methodology on the basis of ARRIVG – branch of FSCVG. The soil of the experimental site belongs to the type of alluvial meadow, medium-loamy, saturated, moisture-intensive. Weather conditions were most favorable for the growth and development of table beet plants during the growing season of 2014–2017. A feature of the weather conditions of 2018-2019 was uneven precipitation, which affected the time of germination of seeds. The lack of moisture during the growing season was compensated by irrigation by sprinkling, maintaining the HB at the level of 80–85%. The largest amount of dry matter accumulates Russian single-seeded variety – 18.4%, which corresponds to the level of the standard Bordeaux 237. High sugar content is characteristic of the Creole variety – 10.7%, and exceeds the standards by 1.8%. Samples that are susceptible to diseases of the leaf rosette during the growing season of the culture-Ethiopian and F1Pablo accumulate less of the pigment betanin. The biochemical qualities of Creole root crops are more associated with its genotype. The accumulation of nitrates in samples is highly susceptible to the conditions of the year. The nitrate content varies more than 10 times depending on the year in the varieties Slavyanka, Russian single-seeded, Creole and Bordo 237. The output of marketable products after 6 months of storage in the studied samples ranged from 49.1 to 91.4%. Excellent preservation at the level of standards – over 85% showed the Russian single-seeded variety.

Pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) being a non climacteric fruit, its flavor and sugar content does not increase after harvesting. Thus, the maturity stage at harvesting affects the quality of pineapples after harvesting. This study was conducted to compare the quality parameters at four different ripening stages of pineapple (cultivar Mauritius-Queen type) and their effect on sensory properties after dehydration. Pineapples were harvested at dark green, 50% yellow, 75% yellow and 100% yellow color stages. Total Soluble Solid (TSS) content, Titratable Acidity (TA), TSS/TA ratio, pH, Fruit firmness, L*,a*,b* and hue angle were quantified in fresh samples and the appearance, texture, taste, odor, color and overall acceptability were evaluated in dehydrated samples at each ripening stage. The ripening stage had a significant (P<0.05) effect on selected quality parameters of fresh pineapples. Highest TSS content of 17.75±0.67 was observed in 100% yellow stage whereas the lowest was observed in dark green stage (15.75±0.48). In contrast, the highest firmness was observed in dark green stage (27.47±6.4 N) while the lowest was in 100% yellow stage (12.01±1.17 N). Lowest pH and highest TA were observed in dark green stage while the highest pH and lowest TA were observed in 100% yellow stage with values of 3.49±0.06, 0.82±0.02, 3.74±0.01 and 0.78±0.02, respectively. Sensory evaluation revealed that 75% yellow stage is the optimum ripening stage for dehydration of pineapple (cultivar Mauritius-Queen type) with significantly greater sensory evaluation ranks compared to other stages.

Starting with 1981, the objectives of the breeding programmes in the Research Station for Fruit Growing (RSFG) Iaşi, Romania, took into consideration the on-going improvement of the sweet cherry assortment with cultivars having fruit-bearing precocity, with great productions, self-fertile, with decreased trees’ vigour, crown compactness, resistant to anthracnose, monilia, frost and fruit’s cracking, flowering lateness, superior quality of the fruits and ripening time at the extremities of the sweet cherries’ maturation season. As a result of the breeding programmes that took place up till present at RSFG Iaşi, 28 new sweet cherry cultivars, obtained through controlled hybridization, free pollination and conservative clonal selection, were homologated during 1994-2017. The present results refer to a study led during 2015-2017, having as biological material nine sweet cherry cultivars (‘Cetăţuia’, ‘Cătălina’, ‘Golia’, ‘Bucium’, ‘Ştefan’, ‘Iaşirom’, ‘Oana’, ‘Radu’ and ‘Ludovan’) obtained through controlled hybridization. The comparision of the cultivars has been performed versus their genitors ‘Van’ (♀) and ‘Boambe de Cotnari’(♂). There have been taken observations and determinations concerning the trees’ vigour, resistance to frost and anthracnosis, the main growing and fructification phenophases, physical and chemical treats of the fruit. The highest values regarding fruit’s weight (7.5-8.9 g) have been recorded for the ‘Ludovan’, ‘Bucium’, ‘Ştefan’, ‘Iaşirom’ and ‘Golia’ cultivars, while the values of the soluble substance content have been between 15.20-19.25 °Brix, the titratable acidity has been between 0.455-0.764 g malic acid 100 mL-1 of fresh juice and the total content of polyphenols has recorded values between 97.41-574.95 mg GAE 100 mL-1 of fresh juice. The hybridization between ‘Van’ and ‘Boambe de Cotnari’ has allowed the obtaining of valuable cultivars, that got remarked by earliness (‘Cetăţuia’, ‘Cătălina’), decreased trees’ vigour (‘Ştefan’, ‘Golia’), particular quality of the fruits (‘Ludovan’, ‘Iaşirom’, ‘Golia’, ‘Bucium’, ‘Ştefan’, ‘Oana’, ‘Radu’) and resistance to diseases and frost (‘Bucium’, ‘Iaşirom’).

Juice blending is one of the methods that can improve the nutritional quality of juices. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of juice product produced from blends of watermelon fruit pulp juice and baobab fruit pulp powder. This study was also aimed at promoting the use of underutilized African baobab and leverage on the benefits that can be derived from blending these two wonderful plant resources. Four blend ratios and codes of 100:0 (W100), 80:20 (W80B20), 60:40 (W60B40) and 50:50 (W50B50) were developed for watermelon fruit pulp juice and baobab fruit pulp powder, respectively. The physicochemical attributes, mineral composition, microbiological and sensory attributes of the samples were analyzed using standard methods. The increase in baobab fruit pulp powder concentration in watermelon fruit pulp juice increased the titratable acidity (0.24 to 0.48 %), total sugar content (6.0 to7.85 oBrix), total solid (1.30 to 1.37 %), viscosity (473.67 to 730.30 cP), Vitamin C (126.25 to 236.70 mg/100 mL), Vitamin A (18.67 to 80.33 mg/100 mL), calcium (1.97 to 3.46 %), potassium (1.09 to 2.07 %) and iron (3.10 to 4.43 ppm) contents, while decreasing the pH (5.19 to 4.08), total viable count (4.0×104 to 2.0×102 cfu/mL), yeast and mould count (3.2×104 to 0.0×100 cfu/mL) as well as sensory attributes whose values ranged from 3.80 to 7.60 on a 9-point hedonic scale. Therefore, blending watermelon fruit pulp juice and baobab fruit pulp powder has the ability to enhance the physicochemical , micronutrient content, microbiological and sensory characteristics of the samples.

The experiment was carried out at the Germplasm Centre of Bangladesh   Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the fruiting season of 2005-06 to   investigate the effects of fertilizer and its installment of application on   harvesting time, yield and quality of fruits of 8 years old mango plant cv. Amrapali. Four fertilizer doses i.e. T1 : 50% of the fertilizer dose (cowdung 12.5 kg, urea 375 g, TSP200g, MoP125 g, gypsum 125 g and zinc sulphate 7.5 g per plant), T2 : 100% of the fertilizer dose (cowdung 25 kg, urea 750 g, TSP400 g, MoP 250 g, gypsum  250 g and zinc sulphate 15 g per plant), T3 : 150% of the fertilizer dose (cowdung  37.5 kg, urea 1125 g, TSP 600 g, MoP 375 g, gypsum 375 g and zinc sulphate 22.5 g per plant), and T4 : control (no fertilizer) and three splits of application i.e. A1 : One installment (whole fertilizer applied on 15 September), A2 : Two installments (15 September and 15 March) and A3 : Three installments (15 September, 15 March and 15 May) were included as treatments. Plants receiving 150% of the fertilizer dose in three installments caused delayed harvest by 11 days compared  to control than that of the control. Plants treated with 150% of fertilizer dose in combination with three installments produced the highest number of fruits (96/ plant) as well as the highest yield (19.55 kg/plant) as compared to control (23/   plant and 3.48 kg/plant). Applying fertilizer at 150% of the fertilizer dose in  three installments improved the fruit quality with regard to TSS, pH, titratable acidity, vitamin C, moisture content, dry matter content, reducing sugar, non reducing sugar and total sugar content over control. Thus, this treatment may be recommended for fertilizer management in mango cultivation. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjar.v37i2.11231 Bangladesh J. Agril. Res. 37(2): 279-293, June 2012

Commercially recoverable sugar content in sugarcane (CCS, expressed as a percentage) is a key selection criterion in sugarcane breeding programs. In some sugarcane breeding programs there may be significant operational advantages in measuring CCS early in the crop growth cycle, well before commercial harvesting would normally commence, and in restricting growth by withholding irrigation to reduce cane yield and lodging. Two field experiments were conducted to investigate these effects. The experiments included clones representative of genotypes routinely assessed in the earliest stages of clonal selection in breeding programs. Differences among genotypes for CCS were expressed early when cane had very low CCS (in February or March), and then rates of increase in CCS following that time were similar in most genotypes. Therefore, time of sampling had little effect on ranking of genotypes for CCS, and selection for high CCS could be effective early in the year. Irrigation regime also had little effect on ranking of the clones for CCS, indicating that mild water stress could be imposed with no adverse effect on selection results. The results are discussed in relation to optimising selection procedures and systems in early stage selection trials in sugarcane breeding programs, and better understanding the physiological basis of genetic variation in CCS.

The object of research is the technology of jelly-fruit marmalade with the addition of multicomponent fruit and berry paste from apples, quince and black currant. Marmalade products are in demand due to their attractive appearance, excellent taste, aroma and good absorption by the body. This delicacy is characterized by the absence of fat, high sugar content and the presence of functionally physiological ingredients. Due to the growing interest of consumers in products of increased nutritional value, the technology of jelly-fruit marmalade with the addition of multicomponent fruit and berry paste from apples, quince and black currant has been improved. New confectionery products must first of all be safe for human health, therefore, organoleptic, physicochemical and microbiological indicators of the quality of marmalade were determined during storage. In terms of organoleptic quality indicators, both control and experimental marmalade samples have high quality indicators during the shelf life. The storage duration affects the consistency of the marmalade, which becomes protracted after 3 months of storage and contributes to a decrease in the color saturation of all samples. The loss of the mass fraction of moisture in the control sample of marmalade up to 6.1 % and the sample with fruit and berry paste – up to 5.0 %, an increase in acid accumulation by 4.0–20.6 % for the control and by 4.0–20 % for the sample marmalade with pasta. It is noted that the content of reducing substances increases in the control sample by 18.0–50.0 %, which is 11.8–15.0 %, and in the sample with the addition of paste – by 10.8–36.9 %, which is 12.3–15.2 %. The data obtained is admissible and meets the established quality requirements in accordance with the requirements of regulatory documents. Microbiological quality indicators have been determined and it has been established that new samples of marmalade with multicomponent paste, both freshly prepared and after a guaranteed shelf life, comply with the standards of all current requirements for the quality of food products. The safety of jellied fruit marmalade on agar with the addition of multicomponent fruit and berry paste from apples, quince and black currant has been proven during the guaranteed shelf life of 3 months.

In two field experiments over a 4-yr period, 2,4-D amine applied up to four times per year from late April to early June at 2.5, 10, and 25 ppmw produced a wide range of symptoms on ‘Concord’ grapes. When 2,4-D symptoms in July were severe, yields were reduced by as much as 85%. However, when 2,4-D symptoms in July were slight (less than 2 on a 0 to 6 visual scale), grape yields were not reduced. A second-order polynomial described well (R2= 0.92) the relationship between symptoms and grape yield. Symptoms of 2,4-D on grape leaves did not persist beyond the year of treatment, although grape yields did not recover fully until the second year after the last 2,4-D treatment In the first year of 2,4-D treatments, low grape yields were correlated with reduced weight and number of berries per cluster. In the second and third year of treatment, low grape yields were correlated with fewer clusters per shoot in addition to lower cluster weight and fewer berries per cluster. When 2,4-D was applied one year only, soluble solids in the grape juice were reduced as much as 9%, although reductions were not related to severity of foliar symptoms. When 2,4-D was applied for three consecutive years, soluble solids in the juice were consistently higher in grapes with moderate to severe 2,4-D symptoms. There were no consistent effects of 2,4-D on juice color or titratable acidity. The pH of fresh juice was increased slightly by 2,4-D with the maximum being 10% after 3 yr of consecutive treatments. In the first subsequent non-treatment year after 3 yr of 2,4-D treatments, juice quality was similar to the quality of nontreated grapes. At a detection limit of 0.05 ppmw, 2,4-D was not detected in the harvested grapes. Based on the results of these experiments, grapes with slight 2,4-D symptoms would not be expected to have reduced yields or reduced juice quality.
