This article is devoted to the use of mnemonic techniques for memorizing the tone of Chinese characters. At present, the ties with the East are strengthening, and more and more people becomeinterested in Chinese. It is difficult to study primarily because of the tones, the incorrect use of which can distort the meaning of a word and even a whole sentence. Therefore, from the first day of training, it is important to pay due attention to them, to practice this aspect. Students who study Chinese may face a number of problems, such as: the inability to distinguish the tone by hearing, the inability to reproduce the basic tones, the inability to remember the correct tone, the inability to reproduce the tones in context, ignorance of phonological rules, mixing tones and intonations. To solve these problems, one can learn the Chinese tones using different resources and techniques. The object of the study is the mnemonic techniques used in the study of Chinese characters. In the course of the study, the following task was set: to determine an effective way of memorizing Chinese characters using mnemonics. The effectiveness of the method was tested experimentally. We have considered examples of legends (stories) created by the authors of the article to remember the direction of the tone. It is important to say these stories-legends aloud, presenting a picture in your head, creating an associative series. The use of mnemonic techniques for memorizing the tone of Chinese characters contributes to the maximum development of imaginative thinking, the creation of stable associations, as well as increasing the time of concentration

Specialists in the field of programming create a huge flow of software, which is mainly aimed at attracting children to specific software products that have a developing effect, rather, as a side effect. The developing effect is not diagnosed in such programs, but it is often declared by the developers. Scientific and methodological response of the pedagogical community to information challenges in the field of preschool education was the creation of the methodology of author's children's animation and the corresponding educational module. In the article two important competences of preschool children are considered, which are basic in relation to many other competences formed at an older age: developed imaginative thinking and developed research abilities. The development of these competences projects as a methodical waymark for the technical development of the methodology of author's children's animation.Thereby, the purpose of the article is to justify the creation of methods for author's children's animation that determines the development of imaginative  thinking and research abilities of preschool-age children, taking into account the requirements of the modern information society. To achieve this goal, the following methods were used: content analysis; method of contrastive-comparative analysis of scientific and methodical materials; method of system analysis; method of mathematical and statistical data processing; expert appraisement, generalization of research results.Based on the results of the study, the theoretical foundations of the preschool-age child's competence were determined, a pilot study of the development of preschoolers' competencies, the development and introduction of the educational module "Multstudio I CREATE THE WORLD" into the practice of pre-school pedagogy as a potentially effective means of developing imaginative thinking and research abilities of children, development of recommendations for software providing multstudios in kindergarten.

The creation of the Wenzhou Spoken Corpus, an online searchable corpus of a modern Chinese dialect, presents a number of challenges that are of interest to the corpus linguistic community. We review issues involved with collection of spoken data, its transcription and markup, as well as the functionality of the search tools. The transcription makes use of Chinese characters as well as IPA symbols for Wenzhou colloquial forms not conventionally represented by characters. XML was adopted as the standard for the basic format of files, with file searches expressed in XPath form. The search tools provide the usual options of restricting searches by age, gender, etc., and yield concordances and tables of collocates. Though the collection of data for the corpus was ‘opportunistic’ in some ways, and so not ideally balanced or representative, it is nevertheless proving to be a valuable tool for corpus-based research on Wenzhou.

Abstract Chinese characters are considered as an adaptable system, open to expansion and revision. Throughout history, the creation of new characters was one of the most important solutions to enlargements of the conceptual repertoire. Both scholars of “Dutch Learning” in Japan and missionaries active in nineteenth- century China used Chinese characters in their translations of western concepts. From a methodological point of view, Japanese scholars mostly coined compound words rendering the literal meanings of their terms of departure while translators in China, invigorated by the success of the new characters devised for chemical elements, believed that drafting new characters was more in line with the characteristics of the Chinese language. However, notwithstanding the painstaking efforts with which they were created, the new characters proposed by missionaries were eventually replaced by compound terms first used in Japanese adaptations. This paper examines the different practices and attitudes of Chinese and Japanese authors toward the creation of new characters as a method of translation. Analyzing the influence of their divergent approaches on the lexical systems of their respective languages, since Chinese has a very limited number of phonetic patterns, I conclude that it is impossible to create viable technical terminologies only by increasing new characters.

This paper focuses on the potential of storytelling as a means of influencing students to become engaged with science and to choose a career in a STEM field. Given the role that leaders can play in motivating and influencing people and considering Nikola Tesla a leader in the fields of electrical engineering and science, the paper identifies Tesla’s leadership traits, as these emerge from his life story, that is, actual historical events regarding his life and his scientific/technological work. These leadership traits refer to (a) imaginative thinking and innovation, (b) persistence/perseverance, and (c) vision, and point to the need for empirical studies to document the effectiveness of the Nikola Tesla story to motivate and influence students. The significance of the Nikola Tesla story for science education is also discussed.

Abstract Tomasello offers a compelling account of the emergence of humans’ sense of obligation. We suggest that more needs to be said about the role of affect in the creation of obligations. We also argue that positive emotions such as gratitude evolved to encourage individuals to fulfill cooperative obligations without the negative quality that Tomasello proposes is inherent in obligations.
