Effect of Monochromatic Light on Plasma and Mrna Levels of Luteinising Hormone, Follicle-Stimulating Hormone, and their Receptors in the Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Gonadal Axis of Pigeons

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of monochromatic light on luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations, LH and FSH mRNA levels, and mRNA levels of their receptors (LHR and FSHR) in Pigeons (Columba livia). A total of 60 paired adult White King pigeons were randomly divided into four groups; each group was exposed to violet light (VL), green light (GL), red light (RL), or white light for 16 h. Nine paired pigeons from each group were selected for analysis of FSH and LH concentrations and six paired pigeons from each group were selected for analysis of mRNA. The results showed that the concentration of LH in females was lower in the VL group (P<0.05), and in males, it was lower in the VL and GL groups (P<0.05). The concentration of FSH in females was significantly higher in the RL group than in the VL group (P<0.05), whereas no significant difference was observed in males (P>0.05). In females, the LH and FSH mRNA levels were relatively high in the pituitary gland, whereas LHR and FSHR mRNA levels were relatively high in the ovary. In males, the LH, LHR, FSH, and FSHR mRNA levels were high in the pituitary gland, whereas their respective mRNA levels were relatively low in the testis. These results suggest that RL has the potential to improve LH and FSH concentrations and mRNA levels, and indicates that RL could promote reproductive performance of pigeons.

SummaryThe hypothalamic - pituitary - gonadal axis was evaluated in men with paedophilia and non-paedophilic paraphilia, and in normal male controls, by infusion of 100 meg. of synthetic luteinising hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH). There were no significant differences among groups in age, height, weight, testosterone, baseline luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and FSH response to LHRH. However, there was a significant difference between the paedophilic group and the other two groups in the LH response to LHRH. The paedophiles responded with a marked elevation of LH, when compared with the non-paedophilic paraphiliacs and controls. These data indicate a hypothalamic - pituitary - gonadal dysfunction in paedophiles.

The concentration of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in serum and pituitary glands was studied in intact female rats and rats that were ovariectomized on day 0 of the experiment and then starved or fed for 2, 4, 7, or 9 days. Ovariectomy resulted in enhanced rates of synthesis and release of FSH and LH as indicated by the significant (P < 0.01) rises in the concentration of both hormones in the pituitary gland and serum.Starvation resulted in a decrease in body and pituitary weight. The concentration of FSH and LH in pituitary glands of starved rats was higher (P < 0.05) than that in fed rats on days 7 and 9. The concentration of FSH and LH in serum of starved rats was increased after ovariectomy but the levels on days 7 and 9 were lower than those of fed rats.These results suggest that the synthesis of FSH and LH was enhanced in both starved and fed rats following ovariectomy while the rate of release of both hormones was decreased at 7 and 9 days of starvation in comparison with rats fed ad libitum.

AbstractWe measured serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin concentrations on a bioMérieux Mini Vidas system in a pediatric population ranging in age from 1 to 19 years. Reference intervals were established separately for females and males, with stratification by age group and by Tanner's pubertal stage. FSH values were higher in females than in males, and were lowest in both sexes of age class 2 (4–8 years), increasing thereafter to the upper limit for stage PIV (females) and stage PV (males). LH values showed a similar pattern of change: concentrations were lowest for class 1 (1–3 years) and class 2 (4–8 years), and highest for stage PII (females) and stage PV (males). No significant difference was observed according to gender. Prolactin values did not differ markedly according to gender or pubertal status.Clin Chem Lab Med 2007;45:541–5.

Brain and muscle Arnt-like protein-1 (BMAL1) plays an important role in circadian rhythm, which is involved in daily behaviours and physiological activities. However, little is known about the molecular function of BMAL1 in the Pigeon ( Columba livia). In our study, the full-length cDNA of Bmal1 was cloned and sequenced from the Pigeon for the first time, and submitted to the GenBank to obtain the accession number (KF906247). The full-length cDNA of Bmal1 consists of 2,488 nucleotides, and encodes 634 amino acids. Phylogenetic analysis showed that it bore the greatest similarity to Bmal1 from the Chicken ( Gallus gallus) and Barn Owl ( Tyto alba). The amino acid sequence of the Pigeon BMAL1 contained a HLH domain and two PAS domains, which are involved in forming hetero-homodimers with the CLOCK as the positive element of the circadian rhythm. The results of real-time quantitative PCR of Bmal1 under different light regimes showed that the amplitude and expression pattern of Bmal1 were strongly affected by day length. Bmal1 was most highly expressed in the pancreas. Relative to Bmal1 expression level under 12 h of light exposure, it was increased significantly in the pituitary gland, ovary and uterus under 15 h of light exposure ( P < 0.05). However, other tissues, including the hypothalamus, heart, liver, spleen, kidney, intestines, crureus, and pectorals exhibited no significant difference ( P < 0.05) under the two light regimes. This is the first study to investigate Bmal1 mRNA levels in various tissues under different light cycles, and thereby provide data for further study of the molecular and regulatory mechanisms of Bmal1 and circadian clock genes of the Pigeon.

Objective: The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) on the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), progesterone, estradiol, and calcium.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, this study was conducted in the region of Lubuk Buaya Health Care and Andalas Health Care on September– November 2017. Examination of FSH, progesterone, and estradiol levels was performed in the Laboratory Biomedicine, Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University by ELISA method, and the examination of calcium level was performed in Laboratory Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University by calcium Arsenazo method. Then, the data were analyzed by Kolmogorov–Smirnov and independent t-test.Results: This study showed that there was a significant difference of FSH, progesterone, estradiol, and calcium levels on KB DMPA acceptors and non-acceptors with p<0.05.Conclusion: The use of contraception DMPA has the effect on the levels of FSH, progesterone, estradiol, and calcium in the blood.

Objective. Hormones play a vital role in initiating and maintaining male reproductive function. The present study explores the influence and predictive ability of two reproductive hormones on semen quality among men who were partners in an infertile couple. Design. During our cross sectional study, men were recruited from private and public hospital and laboratories for clinical evaluation of fertility status. Methods. Fresh semen samples were assessed for quality (concentration, motility and morphology) according to the 2010 World Health Organization manual and the serum levels of hormones, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), Inhibin B was measured (ELISA). Results. We found a significant difference in the two groups regarding sperm concentration (p<0.0001), total sperm count (p<0.0001), progressive motility (p<0.0001), vitality (p<0.0001) and the percentage of normal forms (p=0.043). We found a strong and negative correlation between FSH and Inhibin B in the overall population, the normozoospermic reference group and the case group. Our study confirmed that Inhibin B was significantly and positively correlated with sperm concentration and leucocytes, and that FSH was negatively correlated to sperm concentration and vitality. Conclusion. Consistent with other studies, our results show strong association between semen quality and FSH and Inhibin B.

Cancer, when detected at an early stage, has a very good probability of being eradicated by surgery or radiotherapy. However, less aggressive treatments also tend to provide high rates of cure without the side effects of radical therapy. We report on the results of our clinical experience with photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of early carcinomas in the upper aerodigestive tract, the esophagus, and the tracheobronchial tree. Sixty-four patients with 101 squamous cell carcinomas were treated with three different photosensitizers: hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD), Photofrin II, and tetra (m-hydroxyphenyl)chlorin (mTHPC). Seventy-seven (76%) tumors showed a complete rsponse with no recurrence after a mean follow-up period of 27 months. There was no significant difference in terms of cure rates among the three dyes. However, mTHPC has a stronger phototoxicity and induces a shorter skin photosensitization than either of the other photosensitizers. There were eight major complications: three esophagotracheal fistulae after illumination with red light in the esophagus, two esophageal stenoses following 360° circumferential irradiation, and three bronchial stenoses. Illumination with the less penetrating green light and the use of a 180° or 240° windowed cylindrical light distributor render the risk of complications in the esophagus essentially impossible, without reducing the efficacy of the treatment. Therefore, PDT may be considered as a safe and effective treatment for early carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract, the esophagus, and the tracheobronchial tree.
