The article discusses the part of the literary heritage of Archpriest Avvakum that relates to the preaching genre. The content of Avvakum’s Teachings, included in the Book of Conversations and the Book of Interpretations is subjected to research analysis. As a prerequisite for the writer’s preaching work, Avvakum’s oral teaching activities of the pre-Pustozersk period of his life are outlined. It is shown that the style of Avvakum’s preaching writings was influenced by four types of verbal elements, him being equally immersed in all of them until the end of his days: the style of the Holy Scriptures, the style of the liturgical texts and liturgical hymnography, the style of the Old Russian bookish language and the style of the Russian spoken language with its characteristic «vernacular» flow. The bold combination of these four elements, manifested primarily in the genre of free sermon, turns Avvakum into a highly innovative writer.

The article focuses on the importance of old Russian literature in the works by Sasha Sokolov, with a specific reference to his first book A School For Fools (1976). The analysis of this text takes into account lexical choices made by the author and their meaning in the context of the narration. This approach lies at the basis for the proposal of a tripartite model that describes the relationship between Sokolov’s works and the old Russian tradition. The model includes the following categories: 1. Allusions to religion; 2. Presence of elements pertaining the realm of folklore; 3. Allusions to episodes or figures related to old Russian literature. The results of this research contribute to the broadening of knowledge in the field of contemporary Russian literature and its relations with the old literary heritage. Moreover, this investigation allows a deeper comprehension of Sokolov’s writing style.

The article argues for the need to compile a new fundamental argotic dictionary on a scientific basis. Using the comparative and historical method, the paper provides the criticism of the previous lexicons reflecting the language of the criminal world. With respect to the mistakes and inaccuracies made by compilers of the available dictionaries, the author develops the principles of lexicographic representation of the Russian argot, determines the sources of the language material included in the dictionary (folklore, old Russian literature, speech of modern representatives of the criminal subculture), proposes criteria and methods of the qualifying a lexical unit as argot. The article describes the new dictionary structure that reflects complex characteristics of its constituent units (a headword with stress, reference articles, meaning interpretation, context of use, phraseological units, grammatical characteristics, etymology). It also identifies tendencies of the modern Russian argot evolution caused by the influence of changes in the Russian society in general and in the criminal world in particular, as well as the reasons for penetrating argot in the spoken language and media texts. Besides, the paper shows the possibilities of using the new qualitative linguistic dictionary to study the linguistic picture of the world of argot speakers, to form an objective evaluation of this phenomenon and to improve the speech culture of Russian society.

The article discusses retrospective-historical analogies in the liturgical texts devoted to the great Kiev Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich of liturgical texts as elements of reflection about him that characterize his personality and actions. As a result, the researcher comes to the conclusion that the Old Russian hymnographers, comprehending and singing the holiness of the great Kiev Prince Vladimir by means of historical parallels, were versatile inventive: they sought to expand the range of retrospective images, and to consolidate and even develop some semantics associated with them, so that, under their pen, the Baptist of Russia acquired stable similarity features either to the Old Testament heralds of the coming Tsar and Savior of the world, or to New Testament witnesses of the sacrificial preaching order and risen Son of God, or the early Christian adherents he founded the Church as the repository of truth and faithful congregation.

Abstract Learning to listen and speak are well-established preludes for reading, writing, and succeeding in mainstream educational settings. Intangibles beyond the ubiquitous test scores that typically serve as markers for progress in children with hearing loss are embedded in descriptions of the educational and social development of four young women. All were diagnosed with severe-to-profound or profound hearing loss as toddlers, and all were fitted with hearing aids and given listening and spoken language therapy. Compiling stories across the life span provides insights into what we can be doing in the lives of young children with hearing loss.

To ensure optimal auditory development for the acquisition of spoken language, children with hearing loss require early diagnosis, effective ongoing audiological management, well fit and maintained hearing technology, and appropriate family-centered early intervention. When these elements are in place, children with hearing loss can achieve developmental and communicative outcomes that are comparable to their hearing peers. However, for these outcomes to occur, clinicians—early interventionists, speech-language pathologists, and pediatric audiologists—must participate in a dynamic process that requires careful monitoring of countless variables that could impact the child's skill acquisition. This paper addresses some of these variables or “red flags,” which often are indicators of both minor and major issues that clinicians may encounter when delivering services to young children with hearing loss and their families.
