A bibliometrics study of library and information science doctoral dissertations in China from 2011 to 2020

By reading the titles, abstracts, and keywords of LIS doctoral dissertations in China from 2011–2020 and conducting cluster analysis and network analysis of keywords, this study aims to understand the intelligence structure of LIS doctoral dissertations in China, as well as the disciplines and topics intersecting with LIS. The results indicated that Wuhan University had the highest number of doctoral dissertations among all the selected universities offering LIS doctoral education. Research fields mainly focus on online information behavior and information services. The findings could be because of the development of computer science and information technology in the past decade, which indicates that the research direction of LIS in China follows the trend of time development.

Previous studies have presented a radical change in library and information science research topics in North America. This article investigates library and information science doctoral dissertations in China in terms of their topics and interdisciplinarity in the past 20 years. The results do not find a significant change in library and information science dissertation topics in China but reveal that the increase of library and information science doctoral research in the area of information science is attributed to an increase in admissions to Information Science majors compared to other majors (Library Science and Archive Studies). This study also shows that the academic background of library and information science doctoral advisors does not affect the interdisciplinarity of their students’ doctoral dissertations in China.

This study sought to assess the extent of research collaboration in Library and Information Science (LIS) schools in South Africa between 1991 and 2012. Informetric research techniques were used to obtain relevant data for the study. The data was extracted from two EBSCO-hosted databases, namely, Library and Information Science Source (LISS) and Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA). The search was limited to scholarly peer reviewed articles published between 1991 and 2012. The data was analysed using Microsoft Excel ©2010 and UCINET for Windows ©2002 software packages. The findings revealed that research collaboration in LIS schools in South Africa has increased over the past two decades and mainly occurred between colleagues from the same department and institution; there were also collaborative activities at other levels, such as inter-institutional and inter-country, although to a limited extent; differences were noticeable when ranking authors according to different computations of their collaborative contributions; and educator-practitioner collaboration was rare. Several conclusions and recommendations based on the findings are offered in the article.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the meaning of fake news in the digital age and on the debate on disinformation in scholarly literature, in the light of the ethics of library and information profession. Design/methodology/approach Revision of a keynote address at the BOCATSSS2020 conference, this paper offers an overview of current literature comparing it with a moment in the past that was crucial for information: post-Second World War time, when Wiener (1948) founded cybernetics and C.P. Snow advocated for “The two cultures” (1959). Findings The complex issue demands a multi-disciplinary approach: there is not one solution, and some approaches risk limiting the freedom of expression, yet countering the phenomenon is a moral obligation for library and information science professionals. Originality/value Comparing the present digital revolution with the past, this paper opens questions on the ethical commitment of information professionals.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report on ongoing research examining the current level of self-management of library and information science (LIS) professionals in federal universities in Nigeria. The long-term objective of the study is to determine the effect of self-management on information services delivery of LIS professionals. Design/methodology/approach – A descriptive survey method was adopted to gather data from the LIS professionals in the selected 24 universities. The questionnaire was administered on 429 professionals (census) and all were received, processed, analysed and the results presented. Findings – The study reveals that majority of respondents have high level of self-management and applied relevant strategies that enabled them identify opportunities and act on them for personal and professional growth. Research limitations/implications – The study was limited to practising professionals in the federal university libraries but has implications for implementing continuing professional development for all professionals in similar institutions across Nigeria. Practical implications – The study places emphasis on professionals, library management and library schools that they cannot downplay the relevance of self-management in the workplace, consequently training should be ongoing. Originality/value – The future of LIS professionals has not been viewed in the light of adopting self-management competence on such a broad scale, and with a view to assessing how this skill can help change the perception of professionals to its relevant contribution to personal development and professional growth.

This study first gave a brief bibliometrics analysis of Chinese literature regarding MLIS in Mainland China. The results showed that the quantity of literature published in the past decade has remained flat; Keywords “Master of Library and Information Science” and “Graduate education” are significant important; Five author collaboration groups have been found; The rate of institutional cooperation in literature is not high. Further, a tentative exploration for designing surveys on the current situation of talents’ cultivation of MLIS program in Mainland China was given for the actual investigation and research. Annual Refresher Programme In Teaching (ARPIT) is a major and unique initiative for professional development in Library and Information Science (LIS), using Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) platform called SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) of Government of India. Learners who find it difficult to spare time for regular physical learning may use this platform for professional development and career progression. With the advantage of this platform, a new course, i.e., Emerging Trends & Technologies in Library & Information Services (ETTLIS), has been launched with National Resource Centre in Library and Information Science (NRC) at Central Library, IIT Delhi. People might be thinking that the role and prospects of library professionals are diminishing. However, we can say that they are becoming more important provided they are keeping pace with emerging trends & technologies in LIS and willing to go out of the box. ETTLIS course has been designed to make learners aware of new trends, technologies, and developments in the field of library systems and services. The paper is aimed to highlight this course and its useful contents to every library professional through SWAYAM and its YouTube Channel to help in professional development and career progression.

Purpose/Thesis: The recent decision to join three previously separate disciplines – library and information science, media studies, and cognition and social communication science, into a single discipline of social communication and media sciences prompted the author to investigate if joining of these disciplines according to the compulsory categorization published by the OECD, is supported by an overlap in their fields of research, or by a similarity in their methods of conducting it.Approach/Methods: An analysis of the review articles devoted to the research fields of all three disciplines, and of the information regarding the research interests of the journals affiliated with them, as published on the journals’ websites, allowed the author to establish their thematic scope. The results of this analysis were compared with bibliographic data and sets of keywords found in the affiliated journals. The comparison relied on an analysis of citations, and of coexistence of specialized terms.Results and conclusions: The analysis of the review articles suggested that the basic research fields of library and information science and of the media studies and cognition and social communication science are aligned and complement each other. This conclusion was further supported by the analysis of the guidelines for the potential contributors provided on the websites of the investigated journals. However, the analysis of the bibliographic data and of the keyword sets gave an entirely different idea of the relation between the studied disciplines, indicating that there is no significant thematic overlap between them. Nevertheless, this might be due to the quality of this particular data sample, and to the methods’ susceptibility to data disruption.Originality/Value: The article proves that there is an overlap between library and information science, and the social communication and media sciences. Furthermore, it shows the limits of the citation method and of the specialized terms coexistence method, resulting from the practices of the authors and the editorial teams of some of the journals discussed. The article shows that all quantitative studies of the state of scholarship in a given discipline in Poland must be conducted with great care, and their results should not be the only basis for conclusions.

The value of information as an intangible asset has become increasingly prominent in recent years, in spite of the challenges involved in the identification, measurement and financial valuation of intangibles. Information is a commodity and information service is the marketing of that commodity. This chapter highlighted the significance of marketing in library and information science. Concepts such as information science, marketing and marketing mix, marketing research, and significance of marketing were discussed. The chapter concluded that marketing of information services is important and recommended that it should be incorporated into the curricula of Library and Information Science Schools in Nigeria. It is hoped that information provided in this chapter will enable Librarians, lecturers and students of Library and Information Science to understand the value of marketing in the process of providing information services to customers.
