Background. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide and largely preventable through improving diet quality and other lifestyle factors. In recent years, dietary recommendations have shifted towards diets high in plant-based foods and low in animal-based foods for the prevention of chronic diseases. Objective. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between seeds consumption, lipid profile and body mass index (BMI) in a group of 889 (313 female and 576 male) randomly selected patients hospitalized in the Nitra Cardio Center, Slovakia. Material and Methods. The data necessary for the evaluation the relationship between seeds consumption, lipid profiles and BMI were obtained by a questionnaire method in closed-ended format. Data collection was carried out simultaneously with the anthropometric and biochemical examinations of the respondents ensured by the Nitra Cardio Center. The following parameters were assessed in the blood: total cholesterol (T-C), low-density cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and glucose (GLU). Comparisons between groups were made utilizing one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's post hoc test. Results. Respondents indicated pumpkin seeds as the most commonly consumed seeds (45.19% of women and 53.06% of men) and their preference did not cause changes in lipid profile. Women who consume seeds 1-2 times/month had significantly lower levels of T-C and LDL-C compared to women non-consuming seeds (P < 0.05). In men, we did not observed any changes in lipid profile. The lowest BMI in women was associated with flaxseed preference and in men with sunflower preference. Increasing frequency of seeds consumption of women and men did not cause changes in BMI. Conclusions. Based on beneficial effects of seeds on cardiovascular risk factors, it seems that seeds consumption can be considered as a useful therapeutic approach for reducing lipid profile and body mass index.

6625 Background: The association between vitamin D and obesity remains unsettled with studies reporting conflicting findings on the relationship between the two. This association assumes even greater importance in cancer because of the alleged role of vitamin D in cancer risk and survival. Currently, the dietary recommendations for Vitamin D do not take into account a person's body mass index (BMI). We investigated the relationship between serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D [25(OH)D] and BMI in a large sample of cancer patients. Methods: A consecutive case series of 740 cancer patients seen at Cancer Treatment Centers of America from Jan 08 to June 08. Serum 25(OH)D was measured at presentation to the hospital. The cohort was divided in 4 BMI groups (<18.5, 18.5–24.9, 25–29.9, and >30.0 kg/m2). Correlation between 25(OH)D and BMI was evaluated using Spearman correlation coefficient. Mean 25(OH)D was compared across the 4 BMI groups using ANOVA. Linear regression was used to quantify the relationship between BMI and 25(OH)D. Results: Of 740 patients, 303 were males and 437 females. The mean age at presentation was 55.7 years (SD = 10.2). The mean BMI was 27.9 kg/m2 (SD = 6.7). Most common cancers were lung (134, 18.1%), breast (131, 17.7%), colorectal (97, 13.1%), pancreas (86, 11.6%), prostate (45, 6.1%) and ovarian (39, 5.3%). The mean serum 25(OH)D was 21.9 ng/ml (SD = 13.5). Analysis revealed that as BMI groups increased from normal to overweight or obese classifications, there was a significant decrease in 25(OH)D (Table). The Spearman correlation between 25(OH)D and BMI was -0.20 (p = 0.001). Every 1 kg/m2 increase in BMI was significantly associated with a 0.43 ng/ml decline in serum 25(OH)D (p = 0.001). Conclusions: We found that obese cancer patients (BMI >=30 kg/m2) had significantly lower levels of serum 25(OH)D as compared to nonobese patients (BMI <30 kg/m2). BMI should be taken into account when assessing a patient's vitamin D status and more aggressive vitamin D supplementation should be considered in obese cancer patients. BACKGROUND: Breast cancer, a global health problem with a high mortality rate, has several risk factors, including obesity and increased lipid profile. Postmenopausal obesity is associated with estrogen production from adipose tissue, while abnormal cell growth is triggered by insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and insulin. Obesity could be assessed by measuring body mass index (BMI). An increase in lipid profile signifies an increased risk for breast cancer. Histopathological findings in the form of grading and differentiation can indicate how serious the condition is. Breast cancer with good differentiation is always associated with a positive prognosis. OBJECTIVE: This observational analytic study aims to determine the relationship between BMI and cholesterol levels based on the menopausal status and the histopathological grading findings of breast cancer patients. METHODS: The observational cross-sectional study analyzed histopathological grading, total cholesterol level, and body mass index. Data were analyzed with Spearman rank correlation statistical test, and the results are significant when the p-value is <0.05. RESULTS: Analyzing the relationship between cholesterol levels and histopathological gradings indicated a moderate correlation. The results of another correlation test based on menopausal status showed a weak correlation value, while menopause was said to be significant, indicating a moderate correlation. However, results from the analysis of BMI data in the menopausal subject group were associated with histopathological assessment. CONCLUSIONS: There is a relationship between cholesterol levels and histopathological degrees in the two menopausal status groups. However, no relationship was found between BMI and the histopathological grades of breast cancer.

Background and Aims: Cord blood leptin may reflect the leptinemic status of a newborn at birth more accurately than the leptin values of blood collected from other sites. The present study was undertaken to determine the relationship of cord serum leptin concentration at birth with neonatal and maternal anthropometric parameters. Materials and Methods: Blood was taken from the umbilical cord of the babies at delivery. Maternal anthropometric measurements were recorded at admission for delivery. Neonatal anthropometric measurements were recorded within 48 hours after delivery. Linear regression analysis was used to explore the relationship between cord serum leptin concentration and anthropometric parameters of the baby and the mother. Both Serum leptin and serum C-peptide levels were measured by chemiluminescence-based ELISA method. Results: The leptin concentration (ng/ml, mean±SD) in cord blood was 39.13±14.44. Cord leptin levels correlated with birth weight (r=0.673, p<0.0001), ponderal index (r=0.732, p<0.0001) but it did not correlate with maternal body mass index, gestational age (r=0.135, p=0.349) at delivery or cord serum C-peptide concentration (r=-0.049, p=0.735) or placental weight (r=0.203, p=0.157). Conclusion: There are associations between cord leptin concentration at delivery and birth weight, ponderal index (PI) of the babies but not body mass index (BMI) of the mothers. High leptin levels of the baby could represent an important feedback modulator of substrate supply and subsequently for adipose tissue status during late gestation. AbstractObjectivesThe combination of sleep duration, television (TV) time and body mass index (BMI) may be related to the alteration of cardiometabolic risk. However, there are few studies that use these variables grouped, and showing the moderating role of age. This study aimed to verify if the combination of sleep duration, TV time and BMI is associated with cardiometabolic risk and the moderating role of age in this relationship in youth.MethodsCross-sectional study conducted with 1411 adolescents (611 male), aged 10–17 years. Sleep duration, TV time and BMI were assessed and grouped into eight categories. Cardiometabolic risk was assessed by a continuous metabolic risk score, including the following variables: low HDL-cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, dysglycemia, high systolic blood pressure, high waist circumference and low cardiorespiratory fitness. Generalized linear models were used to test moderation of age in the relationship between the eight categories of sleep duration/television time/BMI with cardiometabolic risk.ResultsCardiometabolic risk factor showed association with all overweight or obesity independent of sleep time and TV time. Age moderated the relationship between sleep duration/television time/BMI with cardiometabolic risk. This association was stronger in younger adolescents (11 and 13 years), indicating that individuals with inadequate sleep, prolonged TV time and overweight/obesity present higher cardiometabolic risk values when compared to 15-year-old adolescents.ConclusionOverweight/obesity, independently of sleep duration and TV time, is the main risk factor for cardiometabolic disorders in adolescence. When moderated by age, younger adolescents that presented the combination of risk factors had higher cardiometabolic risk.

Aim. The efficacy of triphala on lipid profile, blood glucose and anthropometric parameters and its safety were assessed. Methods. Databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Thai Library Integrated System (ThaiLIS) were systematically searched to review current evidence of randomized controlled trials (RCT) on triphala. RCTs investigating the safety and efficacy of triphala on lipid profile, blood glucose and anthropometric parameters were included. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed independently by 2 authors. Results. Twelve studies on a total of 749 patients were included. The triphala-treated groups showed significantly reduced low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglyceride in 6 studies. Five RCTs demonstrated triphala-treated groups led to statistically significant decrease in body weight, body mass index and waist circumference of obese patients. Moreover, triphala significantly decreased fasting blood glucose level in diabetic patients but not in people without diabetes. No serious adverse event associated with triphala was reported during treatment. Conclusions. This review summarized a current evidence to show triphala might improve the lipid profile, blood glucose, the body weight, body mass index and waist circumference under certain conditions. However, large well-designed RCTs are required to confirm this conclusion.
