Assessment of peroral intake of nitrates with drinking water for different sections of the population of Zhytomyr region

Objective: We assessed the degree of risk to the health of the rural population of different ages with constant peroral intake of nitrates with drinking water. Materials and methods: The study was conducted within the rural residential areas of Zhytomyr region and it is a part of the research "Ecological and social assessment of the state of rural residential areas in the context of sustainable development." Drinking water samples were taken from public and private sources of decentralized water supply: wells, bore-wells and natural sources. A total 549 water samples were taken. In the study, we used general scientific methods: analytical, field, laboratory and statistical ones. Results: Among the studied areas, the largest excess of the average content of nitrates was recorded in drinking water of rural settlements of Berdychiv district. The risk assessment showed that the children aged 0-10 years were the most sensitive population to nitrates, and the women were more vulnerable to nitrates than the men among the adult population. The significant correlations between an excess of nitrate content in drinking water and cancer among adults and children in Berdychiv district have been proven. Conclusions: It has been proven that with a constant oral intake of nitrates with drinking water, harmful effects on the health of the rural population are observed, which, according to their sensitivity to their action, were distributed as follows: children 0-10 years old> adult women> adult men> adolescents.Taking into account the results obtained, it is necessary to monitor constantly the quality of drinking water sources of decentralized water supply in rural areas and to inform the rural population about water quality and the impact of its impurities on human health.

One of the main problems of rural residential areas is to provide the local population with quality drinking water, which is a major factor influencing their health. To solve this problem, it is necessary to implement effective measures not only at the state level but also at the regional and local levels. The main purpose of decentralization of power is to transfer the power and appropriate financial resources to the lowest levels of local self-government, which makes it possible for created amalgamated communities to use these resources to solve the priority issues. However, to determine the ecological state of rural settlements in the subsystem of drinking water quality, it is necessary to assess its quality in the territory where the community is situated. The investigation was carried out in 15 rural settlements of the Teterivka amalgamated community of the amalgamated Zhytomyr district. 36 water samples were selected from the sources of non-centralized water supply. Water quality classes were determined following DSTU (National Standards of Ukraine) 4808:2007 “Sources of Centralized Drinking Water Supply. Hygienic and Environmental Requirements for Water Quality and Selection Rules”. As a result, it has been established that nitrates make the largest contribution to the pollution of drinking water. In 47% of the selected samples, the nitrate content on average exceeded the norm; and in 46.7% of the investigated settlements, water belongs to quality class 4, defined as “mediocre”, “partially potable” of undesirable quality. A critical situation was recorded in the villages of Mykhailivka, Nova Rudnia and Staroshiika, where the nitrate content in all selected samples of the well water exceeded the norm. On average, 61% of the selected water samples did not meet the standard and were below the standard. According to the pH indicator, the quality classes vary from “excellent”, very pure water grading to the class of “good”, pure water of the desired quality to “satisfactory”, slightly contaminated water of acceptable quality. The total iron content exceeded the standard in 5.6% of the selected samples.


Introduction. The data presented by us is characterize priority problems in the field of drinking water supply and quality of drinking water that are relevant for many regions of Ukraine, including for Hulyaipilskyi district of the Zaporizhzhskyi region, whose population receives drinking water with deviations in some indicators from hygienic standards. Objective - to study impact of mineral composition of drinking water on the health state population in five experimental districts (Vozdvyzhenskyi, Komsomolskyi, Novozlativskyi, Uspenivskyi and Malynovskyi) of Zaporizhzhskyi region in comparison with control Hulyaipilskyi district (with the lowest levels of diseases among population). Materials and methods. Study of drinking water quality from centralized and decentralized water supply sources in Hulyaipilskyi district (102 studies in total). Indicators of general and primary morbidity among adult population in Hulyaipilskyi district were studied for the last 5-year period (280 studies in total). Indicators of general and primary morbidity among adult population in the individual hospital districts were analyzed according to the medical records (350 studies totally). Results. Deterioration of the qualitative composition of drinking water with an increased level of total mineralization during 2015–2019 was established on the territory of individual rural areas: from 1.15 to 21.82 times. A reliably high level prevalence of kidney stones and diseases of the urinary system, diseases of the circulatory system, hypertension, coronary heart disease was shown in the territory of rural districts: Komsomolskyi, Novozlatopilskyi, Uspenskyi and Malinovskyi among adult population, compared with average annual indicator in the Hulyaipilskyi rural district (p < 0.001). Conclusions. There was a tendency to increase incidence of hypertension in all rural hospital areas during 2015–2019 years. Statistically significant correlation of average strength were revealed between individual components of the mineral composition of drinking water: hardness, dry residue, total mineralization and prevalence of III, XIV classes of diseases by ICD-10 (r = 0.30, p < 0.05).

Aim. To analyze the levels of nitrate pollution of decentralized water supply sources in the settlements of Lviv region, and to investigate their influence on the formation of morbidity of the cardiovascular and circulation system among the adult population of the region. Materials and Methods. The study was conducted according to the results of monitoring the nitrate content (mg / dm3) in the decentralized water supply sources for the period of 2012-2018 and the morbidity of the cardiovascular and circulation system of the adult population of 20 districts of Lviv region during 2012-2016. The assessment of health hazards for the adult population of Lviv region from consumption of nitrate-contaminated drinking water was carried out in accordance with the risk assessment methodology based on the calculated hazard coefficients (HQ). The results were processed by traditional methods of variation statistics using licensed computer programs Microsoft Excel and Statistica 10.0. Results and Discussion. The laboratory survey covered 2212 (2012) - 2468 (2018) sources of decentralized water supply in Lviv region. There is a clear tendency of increase in the level of nitrate contamination of the drinking water. Excessive nitrate content was found in 18.6-21.7% of individual sources, 9.9-10.5% of public wells and 12.6-13.3% of public captures. The highest concentrations and the highest percentage of excesses were registered in Mykolaiv, Zhovkva, Zolochiv, and Pustomyty districts, and the smallest of excess nitrates was recorded in Turka, Sambir and Staro-Sambir districts. The average excess nitrate content in the most polluted areas was in the range of 3.3-8.0 MAC, which corresponds to concentrations at 165-400 mg/dm3. The highest rates of cardiovascular morbidity and circulatory system were registered in areas where the population uses mainly decentralized water sources and cases were recorded of significant excess of nitrates in drinking water. The statistical analysis found positive correlation connections between the development of ischemia (moderate, r=0.49, p<0.05), angina pectoris (average, r=0.77, p<0.05), and hypertension (severe, r=0.99, p <0.05) and nitrate content in the drinking water. The determination coefficients were 23.08%, 59.58% and 98.01%, respectively. According to the results of the regression analysis, an adequate mathematical model was constructed to predict the probable development of this pathology among the adult population of the region. An assessment of the health hazard for adults consuming drinking water contaminated with nitrates indicates a threat of increased non-infection morbidity, including that of cardiovascular and circulation system, namely an increase in the average (HQ 1-5) risk of nitrates at 1.8-5.0 MAC to high (HQ 5-10) - at their concentration of 5.9-8.0 MAC. Conclusions. The solution to the problem of reducing nitrate pollution of drinking water should be included amongthe most important issues not only in the field of environmental protection, but also the protection of public health. Improving the environment will help reduce the load on the healthcare system in terms of preventing and treating cardiovascular disease. The paper analyzes the water supply in the rural part of Zagreb County, which is based mainly on individual water supply sources, i.e. dug or drilled wells and Norton pumps.The aim of the paper is to investigate whether there is a difference in health quality of drinking water taken from the wells and taken from the Norton pumps. The wells are supplied from an aquifer that lies at a depth of 12 to 14 meters, while the Norton pumps reach a depth of 6 and 7 meters.The analysis of water samples taken from the water supply sources revealed that the water does not basically comply with the Ordinance on the parameters of assessment and the methods for the analysis of water intended for human consumption, the Act on Water Intended for Human Consumption. Organoleptic indicators such as color and clarity do not satisfy, while the physical and chemical parameters such as pH and conductivity satisfy the criteria set for both water supply sources. Of all the chemical parameters only the chloride content was within the permitted limits, while the oxidativity, the content of ammonium, nitrite and nitrate were above the allowed limits in water samples taken from the wells and Norton pumps. Microbiological indicators in the analyzed samples, i.e. the number of colonies at 37 ° C and 22 ° C, as well as total coliforms also do not satisfy the requirements of the Ordinance. In order to use the water for drinking it is necessary to perform the conditioning and disinfection of wells, while with the Norton pumps these interventions are almost impossible to perform.

Often the government and the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are criticised for their poor performances in delivering services particularly in rural areas. However, there has been limited research on the assessment of their relative performances in service delivery as well as on the perceptions of people on the quality of such service delivery. This study examines the relative performances of NGOs and the governmental development interventions that provide basic services including public health, education, drinking water and sanitation. The study explains the impact of agricultural extension services and infrastructure such as access to roads and markets on the rural people and measures the satisfaction level of the rural community. For this purpose, 225 households (HHs) in 8 villages of Phalia Tehsil, district Mandi Bahauddin, Punjab, Pakistan were first surveyed in 2010 and then in 2014 using a structured questionnaire. The findings reveal different satisfaction levels of HHs, with most of them expressing less satisfaction on government service delivery compared with NGOs. They reveal satisfaction over the performance of NGOs in health, drinking water supplies and agriculture extension services. Further, the study shows an increasing satisfaction of people on access to road, transport, agri-market and price of agri-commodities by the government.

The objectives of this study were to investigate impact of preoxidation on disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors in drinking water via two different preoxidation methods. The full-scale study was conducted on surface river water in a water supply plant in Tianjin, China. Two treatment trains were performed, with prechlorination and preozonation as preoxidation methods, respectively. The water samples were collected on different stages along the treatment processes and analyzed by following organic parameters: dissolved organic carbon (DOC), UV254 and specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA). The results indicated that Train 2 with preozonation was more effective to reduce DBP precursors. Preozonation possessed an excellent ability in the removal of UV254 and SUVA, the removal efficiencies were 25.14% and 18.77%, respectively, comparing to the removal rates of 6.66% and 5.64% during prechlorination, separately.

The paper reports the main findings of a study, designed to develop a better understanding of institutional variations in working with the demand responsive approach (DRA) in rural water supply in the state of Odisha in India. Data for the paper were collected from twelve village communities, where water is being supplied either through their community based institution or through the local government institution of the Gram Panchayat. The findings suggest that the two types of institutions performed differently in implementing the DRA. It depicted that the DRA under the broader rubric of institutional reforms in the water sector has failed to address the question of social inequality, and rather had reinforced and extended the already existing inequity of Indian society to access to safe and secure drinking water in rural areas. The study highlights that participation, cost recovery, full operation and management transfer may be an efficient proposition, but not sustainable in the long run without proper investment in institution building and support from the state, especially in provisioning of basic services like drinking water to rural poor.

Seawater desalination is an alternative technology to provide safe drinking water and to solve water issues in an area having low water quality and limited drinking water supply. Currently, reverse osmosis (RO) is commonly used in the desalination technology and experiencing significant growth. The aim of this study was to analyze the environmental impacts of the seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant installed in Kampung Pantai Senok, Kelantan, as this plant was the first installed in Malaysia. The software SimaPro 8.5 together with the ReCiPe 2016 database were used as tools to evaluate the life cycle assessment (LCA) of the SWRO plant. The results showed that the impact of global warming (3.90 kg CO2 eq/year) was the highest, followed by terrestrial ecotoxicity (1.62 kg 1,4-DCB/year) and fossil resource scarcity (1.29 kg oil eq/year). The impact of global warming was caused by the natural gas used to generate the electricity, mainly during the RO process. Reducing the environmental impact can be effectively achieved by decreasing the electricity usage for the seawater desalination process. As a suggestion, electricity generation can be overcome by using a high-flux membrane with other suitable renewable energy for the plant such as solar and wind energy.

Source of water is the beginning of rural drinking water projects, safe water source is the key to rural drinking water safety. Status of rural drinking water source in china and laws and regulations on rural water conservation were analyzed. The population of centralized water supply accounts for 51% of the total population in rural areas in 2008, centralized water supply 49%. Groundwater source accounts for 57% of the population of centralized water supply projects in rural areas in 2008, surface water sources 43%. China has a relatively sound legal system of drinking water source, including basic law, general law, administrative regulations, local regulations.The paper draws a conclusion that sources of drinking water in rural areas is mainly groundwater, water conservation is short of specific laws and regulations and not suitable for rural area,it is necessary to improve laws and regulations on rural water conservation, government must assume responsibility for rural water conservation, especially financial investment and public policy support.
