I suggest a description of the theory that I find applicable to understanding self-knowledge. The theory of its own complexity focuses on the structure of individual thoughts about themselves. Own complexity concerns two features of a person's self-determination: the number of social roles that a person has, and the ability of a person to differentiate among these roles. For example, I would be considered a weak bearer of the idea of my own complexity if I considered myself as the bearer of a relatively small number of roles and I would describe existing roles as similar to those that I carry out. I would have a greater degree of my own complexity if I looked at the number of roles I increased and made more distinctions between them.

Through examining childbearing in California’s Silicon Valley, this article describes how seeking “self-actualization” has become a rite of passage for contemporary childbearing people. This approach undermines distinctions between “technological” and “natural” approaches to birth, as people are coached to leverage both logistical and animalistic capacities to produce “self-knowledge” and enact new feminist ways of doing embodiment. Based on fieldwork conducted as a doula, this article describes new rituals, anxieties, and aspirations that draw from both the idea that self-authenticity stems from an unadulterated, primordial nature and that self-realization is enabled by a very modern, reflexive strategy of self-design. In this community, the way reproduction comes to matter has less to do with realizing gendered expectations and kinship relations than with creative self-optimization. This approach facilitates women’s self-determination, while simultaneously introducing new forms of pressure and advancing a dominant cultural discourse that minimizes thinking about structural conditions and mutual accountability.

The works of Jewish enlightenment thinker Lazarus Bendavid (1762-1832) are virtually forgotten today. His aesthetic and cultural theory focused on the relationship between moral and aesthetic progress. The present essay discusses Bendavid’s three complementary theories on how aesthetic phenomena promote morality: Firstly, he claims that aesthetic self-experience leads to empathy and therefore to social recognition. Secondly, he suggests that aesthetics do not only facilitate theoretical self-knowledge, but also practical, autopoietic self-determination. At once artist and artwork, the human subject realizes autonomy through cultural artefacts. Thirdly, he associates aesthetics with a justification of man: Despite all human shortcomings, an aesthetic attitude helps recognizing the equality and shared identity of all people and thereby promises a morally superior state in the future.

Abstract: TThe main aim of this study was to examine the relationship between perception of conflict or utility of the sport regarding other social roles and self-determination level in young athletes, focusing on differences among these variables with respect to sex. Hence, we used a sample size of 1897 players from different sport modalities, 1378 male and 519 female. Participants filled a questionnaire to assess self-determination level and other to measure conflict between social roles. Results showed that utility of sport was positive and significantly associated with self-determined motivation, whereas conflict between roles was related with amotivation. Moreover, male athletes showed higher scores in all types of motivation that refer Self-Determination Theory, being the group that perceived the greater incompatibility between sport and other social roles according to their growth age. As a conclusion, we emphasize the necessity to promote intrinsic motives of practice in both sex to increase commitment with the sport activity, and avoid sport dropout that might be happened because of the demands of other contexts that surround young athletes.Key words: Conflict between roles, self-determination, sport practice, scholar age, genre.

The problem of normalization, autonomy and self-determination of people with intellectual disabilities in special education has already taken its place. The consequence of this continuing discourse is the personal nature of disability, international, timeless declarations and modifications of already established rights. Recently, the emancipatory trend is gaining in importance in this discourse. It remains in close correlation with the primary objective of educating people with intellectual disabilities which is comprehensive preparation for life. It is a form of conscious self-reliance, self-knowledge and capacity to take autonomous action. One of the areas of development of self-reliance is work. The resulting interpersonal and intrapersonal experiences can become the path to emancipation. Sometimes, one that goes beyond the standards of rehabilitation.

Oedipus Rex, one of the three famed Theban tragedies by the Greek dramatist Sophocles, vividly portrays the complex and often troubling theme of humanity’s relationship to fate. By detailing the way in which Oedipus, king of Thebes, is reduced by the cruelty of predestination into a puppet with no semblance of control over the course of his own life, Sophocles seems to cast doubt on, not only the effectiveness, but also the meaning of self-control. Thus, freedom of choice, humanity’s final assertion of independence, appears to dissolve into hollow mockery. But even then, Sophocles confirms the fundamental significance of the self-knowledge and dignity that comes from struggling against tyrannical destiny. It is this dignity that sustains king Oedipus through his terrible ordeal so that he comes out of it tortured but not destroyed. It is also this elevation that adds to a tale of endless victimization a whole new dimension of complexity and imbues the words with a touch of tragic and transfiguring sublimity.

The article deals with the doctrine of Marius Victorinus (ca. 281/291‒382/386) on the Divine thinking or intellection, and provides a reconstruction of its possible philosophical sources. In the beginning the author after a breaf mentioning of Aristotle’s noetic theory in his “Metaphysica” emphasizes an important role of the neoplatonic doctrine of the “intelligible triad” in the Trinitarian doctrine of Victorinus, in which God is seen as the unity of the three Divine attributes, potencies or acts: being, life and thought, which correspond to the persons of the Christian Trinity. It is noted that the relationship between these Divine acts has a dynamic character, based on the logic of the eternal process of self-determination of God as the pure Being (Father), which defines himself as the Life (Son) and returns to himself as the Intellect (Holy Spirit), by which the fullness of Divine self-knowledge is achieved. This process Victorinus also connects with the idea of God as an absolute Spirit –a Substance that exists, lives and thinks of itself. Further the author consideres Victorinus’ concept of two actions and movements in God: one is internal, characterizing God the Father, the other is external, characterizing the Son-Logos. It has been argued that this doctrine goes back to the similar doctrine of Plotinus, which he applies to the One and the Intellect. It is noted that Victorinus in the light of the Neo-Platonic dialectics of the One and the Intellect reconsidered an Aristotelian theory of Divine intellect, which thinks of itself. He not only applies it to the Son-Logos, but also joins to it a Plotinian-Porphyrian conception of the “super-thinking” of the One, as a result of which Divine thinking according to Victorinus has two different forms: an internal, potential, hidden and unmanifest thinking (or “super-thinking”) of God the Father, and an external, actual and manifested thinking (or “self-thinking”) of the Son-Logos; the latter initially dwells in the internal thinking of the Father, and then was genereted from it as a Divine thinking that thinks both of the Father and of itself, becoming self-knowledge or self-thinking.
