In recent decades a few research methods have resorted to L2 learners in order to analyse several aspects aiming at methodological improvements. One of them is corpus linguistics, which has largely contributed to the study of language production from a quantitative perspective. A very different one has been the compilation of perceptions of the L2 learning process using ‘narrative inquiry’ and qualitative methods of analysis. However, scholars have not addressed the combination of both methods. In this proposal we examine their main individual features and offer an interwoven line of research, applying the quantitative approach of corpus linguistics to the genre of language learning narratives. Thus, we present a new corpus of L2 learners’ perceptions and provide detailed information on its structure, compilation and categorisation. The interdisciplinary status of this proposal will enable the exploration of new research possibilities that can ultimately benefit the teaching-learning process.

The dramatic advancement technologies, particularly mobile applications, have influenced the education sector. The integration of mobile applications in education to change the teaching-learning process has taken place and led to innovative learning, including English language learning. Hence, this study aimed to find out the students’ perceptions and the factors influencing students’ perceptions toward the use of mobile application in learning English particularly speaking. To reach the objectives, this study used case study as the research method. The data were collected mainly through interview and observation. The participants were five vocational school students in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. They were purposively selected because they had been familiar with mobile application and they had been taught speaking English using mobile application by their teacher, so that they could give adequate information.  The research findings showed positive perception from the students toward the use of Learn English Conversation application in learning speaking. They declared that the use of Learn English Conversation application could facilitate them in practicing speaking, bring fun and enjoyable learning during the learning process. Moreover, their positive perceptions were influenced by several factors such as the flexibility and the new learning experience given by the mobile application, the ease to run the mobile application and unrequired a lot of internet quota when the students run the mobile application.

Contemporary society is actively engaged into technology innovations due to their multi-purposeful usage for personal, professional and educational reasons. Many new terms defining information communication technologies appear but the paper focuses on the interactive media, which may be considered as an integral part of the phenomenon. It is aimed to analyze and discuss the possibilities of integration of interactive media into language learning process to support the efficiency of the study process taking into consideration the needs and achievements of students. The lectures organized with traditional teaching material are getting old-fashioned gradually; therefore, new trends appear in the education process and technologies have to be successfully integrated by the teachers working in higher education institutions. Currently life pace is extremely fast, and rapid changes influence the life of young people who want to be well-educated and prepared for the further professional career. The research was organized to investigate whether the students of higher education institution demonstrate willingness to integrate interactive media into language learning process, i.e. students do not have to be passive users but actively apply and use interactive media in the learning process. Consequently, the teachers have to be familiar with the opportunities provided by the interactive media and acknowledge the necessity of its integration, but still some considerations and uncertainty exist. The methods used for the research are as follows: analysis of the scientific literature sources, content analysis, and questionnaires. Findings of the research are formulated after analysis of the collected data and they revealed the capabilities of the students to use interactive media and perception of the importance and usefulness of such measures.Majority of teachers demonstrate conservative attitude towards innovations and implementation of modern teaching/learning methods, but the situation will be improved putting the efforts in order to seek positive learning outcomes and modernize the study process.

This chapter presents research on language learning abroad and its influence on the development of oral expression. By using biographical-narrative research methods, specifically linguistic life stories, this work examines the experiences and beliefs of a Japanese student of Spanish who has studied this language in Spain on several occasions. This study attempts to determine how study abroad has influenced his language training and the development of his communicative competence, in particular oral expression. At the same time, it describes how the length of each stay abroad has helped or hindered the language learning process, the interaction with native speakers, and the practice of speaking skills.

This article presents the results of a study on the effect of Project-Based Learning (PBL) on students’ English language learning (ELL) attitudes and how the activities influence teaching-learning process in a junior high school in Bali. This research applied an embedded mixed-method design in which the quantitative data were collected using close-ended questionnaires test, and the qualitative data were collected using interview, observation checklist, open-ended questionnaire, and field note. Paired-samples t-test was used to analyse whether or not there is a significant effect on students’ attitude after being taught using PBL, while the qualitative data were analysed descriptively. The analysis shows a significant effect on students’ attitude. PBL enhances students’ learning quality in term of enthusiasm, confidence, and creativity learning ability while it also promotes teacher’s teaching satisfaction. This study supports the implementation of PBL which enhances students’ English Language Learning attitude and teaching-learning process.

Phil Benson's state-of-the-art review of autonomy in L2 learning and teaching is a timely response to an ever-growing interest in autonomous language learning. Focusing his attention on the recent literature, he explores how this interest in autonomy is influencing theory and practice, leading to the emergence of new research agendas in the field. He focuses particularly on the ways in which conceptions of autonomy have evolved and continue to change, and how these new conceptions fit in with broader developments in language teaching and learning theory, educational practice, and social thought. This issue includes also a call for papers on Replication Research Studies, two features marking the publication of this fortieth volume of the journal, and reports on a series of research seminars.Richard Johnstone's article in which he reviews research published in 2004 and 2005 on language teaching, learning and policy is available online at <http://journals.cambridge.org/jidLTA&volumeId=39&issueId=04>.

This paper reviews recent research that has manipulated task complexity variables to gauge their effects on L2 learning. This review draws upon Robinson’s Triadic Componential Framework for task design (2001a) which suggests that increases in task complexity levels should be an important consideration when designing and sequencing a task-based language syllabus. Most of the studies discussed support Robinson’s contention that more complex tasks result in greater accuracy and complexity in L2 learners’ language production. This would imply the need to consider task complexity variables in selecting, designing and administering tasks in the second language classroom to achieve optimum effects on the learning process. Teachers would also have to be conscientious in evaluating cognitive loads of tasks to ensure heightened attention to meaning and forms. Also, the potential of using task complexity level as an organising principle for a second-language syllabus needs to be further explored and investigated.

Língua inglesa.ABSTRACT: This work aims at promoting a discussion about the use of digital mobile technology as a component to support the teaching-learning process of English language, especially within extracurricular environments. We may say that the use of this kind of technology as an education tool suits the current scenario, in which there has been much investment in mobile devices, leading us to deal more and more with students from the Digital Generation, who use these apparatuses constantly. In other words, mobile devices have made even more part of our social interactions and due to their large demand, not only has it increased substantially the number of payable apps, but also the availability of the ones downloaded for free so as to favor the language learning. Thus, we will present some relevant aspects about the use of digital mobile technology in the teaching of English taking, primarily, into account their pedagogical purpose. It is expected that the examples proposed might guide future ideas of adopting educational projects which have to do with the use of technological components of this nature in foreign/additional language lessons.KEYWORDS: Digital mobile technology. Teaching-learning of foreign language. English language.
