Drawing on South Korea’s response to COVID-19, this article examines how the digital measures that were implemented by the nation state during the pandemic intensified the dilemma between public safety and information rights. South Korea’s highly praised handling of COVID-19 raises the question of how far digital technology can infiltrate everyday life for the sake of public safety and how citizens can negotiate the rapid digital transformation of a nation state. The South Korean government’s digital measures during the pandemic involved the extensive use of personal data; however, citizens were not allowed sufficient participation in the flow of information. By critically examining the South Korean case, this article reveals that the government coped with the pandemic through digital surveillance as a way to avoid physical lockdown, and in so doing, projected its desire for transition to a digitally advanced state while facilitating nationalism through a digital utopian discourse.

Many initiatives to measure the internal and external exposures of the residents of Fukushima have been undertaken since the accident at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. However, residents have had few, if any, opportunities for face-to-face explanations to understand the meaning of such measurements. Although the personal data of tens of thousands of residents were collected, these data were not analysed adequately, and were therefore not used to implement large-scale programmes to manage/reduce exposures. One of the lessons learned from the Fukushima accident is that it is imperative for the government to implement these measures for radiation protection, and to build an effective functioning service for the residents. The author, as a physician from the region, has worked as an explainer/interpreter of exposure dose measurements to individual residents. Another lesson learned from this experience is that local medical and health professionals can contribute to building a public system for radiation protection, by acting as ‘liaising officers’ to connect residents, the authorities, and experts from outside the region. This paper describes the author’s experience and lessons learned in the hope that this information will be useful in the event of a future accident.

Integrated, real-time and open approaches relating to the development of industrial analytics capabilities are needed to support smart manufacturing. However, adopting industrial analytics can be challenging due to its multidisciplinary and cross-departmental (e.g. Operation and Information Technology) nature. These challenges stem from the significant effort needed to coordinate and manage teams and technologies in a connected enterprise. To address these challenges, this research presents a formal industrial analytics methodology that may be used to inform the development of industrial analytics capabilities. The methodology classifies operational teams that comprise the industrial analytics ecosystem, and presents a technology agnostic reference architecture to facilitate the industrial analytics lifecycle. Finally, the proposed methodology is demonstrated in a case study, where an industrial analytics platform is used to identify an operational issue in a large-scale Air Handling Unit (AHU).

During the Covid-19 pandemic the government implement the imposition of Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB). This PSBB also has an impact on companies in Jabodetabek including PT Akses Digital Indonesia. In order to comply with regulations given by the government, PT Akses Digital Indonesia has implemented a Work From Home (WFH) policy for its employees. During the implementation of the WFH policy, had difficulty monitoring the performance of its employees. Attendance is one measure of the level of performance, especially employee discipline. Based on the identification of the problem, an employee presence web service application is needed. Of course, this application should be as effective as conventional fingerprint machines in offices. This application is accompanied by a validation feature using geotagging, fingerprint and device checkers to minimize fraud when employees make attendance. This study implements the RESTful API security feature on web services using JSON Web Token (JWT) based on the HMAC SHA-256 algorithm. All implementation stages are tested using the Black Box method and show that JWT can secure the authentication process and secure data. The validation feature is able to provide attendance data with an accuracy of 90,9%.
