- Cairo's City of the Dead consists of an ancient urban Muslim cemetery (642 AD). Al Qarafa, its Arabic name, still functions today as a burying place, but with the peculiarity that it has as many as eighteen urban neighbourhoods with approximately one million residents. Sector studies which rubber stamp the different areas as a single milieu, classify it as a slum. In reality this necropolis, one of the more liveable working class metropolitan districts, represents a stratification of traditions and customs that have accumulated in Egypt from the time of the Pharaohs until today. To unravel the complexity of that body of demographic, ethnic and anthropological values that are closely interwoven with the City's monumental heritage might be useful for further reflection on the future destiny of the City of the Dead. Under the government urban redevelopment project ‘Vision 2050', it is to be demolished, partly for the construction of a park. Basically it is a question of valuing this co-existence of the living and the dead as a distinctive feature, the product of a historical and cultural heritage that is unique in the world.

Holy Week is one of the most important traditions in many parts of the world and a complex expression of cultural heritage. The main goal of this article is to explore which factors determine participation in Holy Week celebrations in the city of Palencia (Spain), measured through the number of processions attended. For this purpose, an econometric count data model is used. Variables included in the model not only reflect participants' sociodemographic features but other factors reflecting cultural capital, accumulated experience, and social aspects of the event. A distinction is drawn between three types of participants: brotherhood members, local residents, and visitors, among whom a survey was conducted to collect the information required. A total of 248 surveys were carried out among brotherhood members, 209 among local residents, and 259 among visitors. The results confirm the religious and social nature of this event, especially in the case of local participants. However, in the case of visitors, participation also depends on aspects reflecting the celebration's cultural and tourist dimension—such as visiting other religious and cultural attractions—suggesting the existence of specific tourism linked to the event. All of this suggests the need to manage the event, ensuring a balance is struck between the various stakeholders' interests and developing a tourist strategy that prioritizes public-private cooperation.

The worldwide concern regarding sustainable urban development has been increasing as the populations of countries increase and demand more consumption of the already scarce natural resources. According to the United Nations, it is estimated that 55% of the world population lives in urban centers, with the perspective of surpassing 68% in 2050. In Brazil, 84% of the population today live in the cities. One of the goals of sustainable development is to make cities more sustainable and inclusive and, to accomplish such goal, many variables need to be accomplished, among which is the strengthening of efforts to protect and safeguard cities’ cultural heritage, for the present and future generations. Seeing as São Paulo is the 10th urban city in the world, and its historical heritage preservation policies are recent and in the process of being outlined, this research strives to answer: What are the main challenges identified by owners/managers of listed historical buildings in São Paulo, which stand in the way of conserving/preserving their properties? Results revealed that the main challenges are a lack of knowledge about what interventions can be done to the property, lack of knowledge on incentive laws and more feasible ways for the conservation of historical sites and dealing with excessive bureaucracy. Such results contribute to the implementation of urban development policies focused on the sustainable goal of safeguarding the city’s cultural heritage, in order to propitiate advancements in preserving the memory and identity of the city through the conservation of properties listed as historical heritage.

In December of 2019, a new coronavirus was discovered in the city of Wuhan, China. The World Health Organization officially named this coronavirus as COVID-19. Since its discovery, the virus has spread rapidly around the world and is currently one of the main health problems, causing an enormous social and economic burden. Due to this, there is a great interest in mathematical models capable of projecting the evolution of the disease in countries, states and/or cities. This interest is mainly due to the fact that the projections may help the government agents in making decisions in relation to the prevention of the disease. By using this argument, the health department of the city (HDC) of Campo Grande asked the UFMS for the development of a mathematical study to project the evolution of the disease in the city. In this paper, we describe a modeling procedure used to fit a piecewise growth model for the accumulated number of cases recorded in the city. From the fitted model, we estimate the date in which the pandemic peak is reached and project the number of patients who will need treatment in intensive care units. Weekly, was sent to HDC a technical report describing the main results.

Olchiki is the indigenous script of Santals, a dominant tribal community of West Bengal, formulated to promote and represent ‘adi’ cultural heritage and traditions in their mother tongue Santali. The script was recognised by the Government of West Bengal in 1978 and was introduced at the primary level of education. However, there have been contestations around its appropriateness as the medium of instruction for the migrant tribal community in the emerging context of the city and globalisation. These discourses have led to the formation of two distinct groups—those who support the introduction of Santali language in Olchiki as a means to formal education and those who resist usage of its script for schooling. In my article, I will present these conflicting views prevailing among the migrant Santals of a settlement called Santragachi, in Kolkata.

The year 2016 marked the fifty-year anniversary of the tragic and destructive flood in Florence, Italy. The floodwaters shook the world with their indiscriminate destruction of human life, property, and priceless Florentine cultural heritage. Early in November of 1966, days of heavy rains transformed the Arno River into a raging beast, overflowing its retaining walls and submerging much of the city and the area around it in foul, murky water filled with sediment, vegetation, sewage, motor oil, and the flotsam of human civilization. The floodwaters either destroyed or badly damaged historic collections of art, sculpture, architecture, books, manuscripts, and documents stored in low-level galleries or basements of institutes, libraries, museums, and private residences.

Usually the diffusion and sharing of cultural heritage documented 3D models on the web are not first of concern for scholars due to the fear of losing the intellectual property related to them. Sometimes the interaction and navigation of virtual objects via the World Wide Web is also problematic due to their dimension (number of triangles), when high-definition has to be preserved. In this paper we propose a mash up methodology, for a multiple approach to visualize 3D models over the internet. After the digitization of a marble statue placed in the Medieval Museum of the city of Bologna, according to the well known 3D pipeline (from the laser scan survey to the texturing process), we assembled together different solutions for sharing the model on the web.

Bandung is one of the halal tourist destinations in Indonesia. With the increasingly rapid growth of cafes and  restaurants, the competition is getting tougher. One of the highlights is whether the café and restaurant are halal certified. This becomes very important because Indonesia is one of the largest Islamic countries in the World. It is proper if halal is the main concern. The business people do not understand and realize the importance of fulfilling the halal standard set by the government. So through this community service will be carried out socialization regarding required halal tourism.   The method used in this study is the Deplat Pastisipatif which is conducting activities in the form of providing counseling and guidance on halal tourism and halal standardization on SMEs in the culinary sector in the city of Bandung, especially the Jatinangor region.   Counseling was carried out by inviting from the tourism , youth and  sport agency and also the MUI. Culinary business begin to understand halal standardization and the importance of having halal certification. There is still a need for assistance to be able to implement halal tourism properly.

In order to be acknowledged as a World Heritage Centre by UNESCO in 2016, the city government transformed Sawahlunto, which used to be an old mining city, into what the government claimed as a culturally touristic mining city. The city had basically been declared as a dead city; however, the government has strategically increased its economics through tourism. This article focuses on the meaning-making process in the construction of the city image(s) basing the process in the discussion of the politics of collective memory and cultural heritage. Data, mainly findings from observations, interviews and textual analysis, were collected from two tourism sites namely Goedang Ransoem Museum and Lubang Tambang Mbah Soero. The aim of the research is to interpret how the people in Sawahlunto make sense of the image construction of the city or even contest it as the government conveyed particular meaning in redefining the city‟s identity. Abidin Kusno‟s conceptualization of collective memory in architecture is mainly used to analyze the architectural elements of the two tourism sites. Furthermore, the analysis also refers to Hobsbawn and Thompson‟s notion of cultural heritage and Leif Edvinson‟s images of the city. Research findings reveal that the city government constructs a dominant meaning of what they convey as cultural heritage by utilizing local laws and the authority from other regions which have more experiences in transforming their city into a city of cultural heritage. On the other hand, the people in Sawahlunto have their own understanding of what their city means for them in relation to their own cultural heritage. All in all, the complexity of the meaning-makitng process in the city‟s transformation between the government and the people could be read as a battleground of contesting discourses.

The article presents Second Lieutenant Napoleon Segieda, alias Gustav Molin “Wera” or Jerzy Salski (after the war), born in the Zamość region, a resident of Pomerania, and a political courier to the government of the Polish Underground State (during the war), parachuted to the country on the night of 7th November 1941. The paper is the first attempt to show his biography and military achievements. He was a participant in the war of 1939 (the defense of Warsaw), and then, a prisoner of war in the German camps, whence, after many trials and tribulations, he arrived at the Polish Forces base in Great Britain. On completing his mission in the country (summer 1942), Segieda set off to London again with the first comprehensive report of the Polish Underground State to the Polish government-in-exile, London. As early as in 1942, being a witness to the extermination, he alerted the world to the Holocaust, to practically no effect, since the West was not particularly interested in the problem. From spring to summer 1942, Napoleon Segieda stayed in the city of Oświęcim where he collected information about the Concentration Camp Auschwitz. On 8th August 1942, he left Warsaw and, via Cracow and Vienna, reached Switzerland where, for unknown reasons, he got stuck on the way to London for a few months. His report was later distributed among many important and influential politicians of the allied community in Great Britain and the USA. It is worth mentioning that the messages on the Holocaust by Stefan Karboński (the head of the leadership of civil combat) also arrived in London during the summer 1942. After the war, Napoleon Segieda settled down in London, under the surname of Jerzy Salski, where he died completely forgotten.

The tourism potential in Indonesia is very significant. However, based on the phenomenon that occurs in several tourist destinations around the world it is found that many tourist attractions are especially damaged in Indonesia due to irresponsible actions. The purpose of this study was to reveal the legal protection of one of the tourist attractions in Indonesia, Maria Cave as a spiritual tourism destination in the City of Kediri. The study was conducted based on research methods using normative jurisdiction review. The results of the study revealed that so far the legal protection of spiritual tourism has been supported by the government but concretely has not been found in the Kadiri city government regulations. Therefore, to minimize the existence of activities that can cause damage and forms of protection of existing tourist destinations, it is necessary to specifically make government and local government regulations as well as to supervise and impose strict sanctions on all forms of irresponsible actions which are certainly supported by a budget enough when using technology for sustainable tourism. Both the community, tourists and entrepreneurs have their respective obligations that must be obeyed in accordance with the provisions and laws in force in Indonesia.
