This work investigates the growth and physiological responses of locally grown tomato cultivars with a known hybrid (Roma-VF cultivars). Seeds of two tomato cultivars: Roma VF (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.Cv) was collected from National Horticulture Research Institute (NIHORT), Ibadan while the Local tomato: Ife-1 (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. Cv) obtained from the market woman in the central market, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- Ife. The seed of the plant were planted in perforated plastic containers containing soil collected at the base of hill 1(latitude 7’3’9.40 and longitude 4’3’24.52) in Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Osun State. The containers placed where they can have access to direct sunlight. The growth parameters of the plants were determined which include the leaf length, width and the shoot size was observed. The weight and growth rate of the shoot were determined. The fruits obtained from all the cultivar were exposed to proximate analysis. It was observed that the shoot of the two cultivars increased in the course of the experiment but at the end the shoot of Roma () was longer than that of local cultivar. More number of leaves was present in Roma compare to local one. Roma has higher moisture content (5.9% M.C)) than the local cultivar (4.7% M.C). Average number of fruits in Roma was (15) which is higher than that of local one (10). From all the parameters observed in this work it was observed that Roma cultivar which is a hybrid do far better in all indication than the local tomato cultivar. This may be as a result of Roma hybrid characteristics such as resistances to disease and unfavorable environmental factors. Equally the improved nutritional value of the Roma tomato and lot of genetically modified features are key to this cultivar (Roma) advancement.

Herbicide tolerance is commonly associated with reduced absorption and translocation of the herbicide; we hypothesized that the mechanism of dicamba tolerance in wild tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) accessions is due to these characteristics. The absorption and translocation of dicamba were investigated at a drift rate of 2.8 g a.e. ha−1 in three predetermined dicamba-tolerant (DT) wild accessions (TOM199, TOM198, and TOM300) and compared with two dicamba-susceptible (DS) commercial tomato cultivars [Money Maker (MM) and Better Boy (BB)]. Dicamba was quantified in three different parts of the tomato plant: two upper leaves, two lower leaves, and the roots at 1, 3, and 7 d after treatment. Both MM and BB absorbed more dicamba then all the three DT accessions. The overall translocation pattern of dicamba was similar between DS cultivars and DT accessions, thus suggesting that tolerance to dicamba in wild accessions may not be associated with reduced translocation but instead with reduced uptake of the herbicide. Additionally, reduced dicamba absorption in DT accessions may be attributed to their leaf characteristics, such as the presence of narrower leaves (3.42 leaf length/width ratio) and higher trichome density (20 no. mm−2) in DT accessions, than compared with DS cultivars (1.92 leaf length/width ratio and 8 no. mm−2 trichome density).

Salah satu jenis tanaman hortikultura penting yang banyak dikembangkan di Indonesia adalah tanamantomat (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill). Beberapa cara dapat dilakukan untuk meningkatkan produksi dan kualitastanaman yang salah satunya adalah dengan mendapatkan varietas unggul baru. Pada tahapan ini maka perludiseleksi terlebih dahulu jenis tomat yang mempunyai hasil baik dan toleran terhadap gangguan organismepenggangu tanaman (OPT). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendapatkan kultivar tomat yang baik dari segipertumbuhan yang dapat dijadikan sebagai sumber genetik untuk bahan persilangan. Dalam percobaan inidilakukan identifikasi dan karakterisasi 11 kultivar tomat hasil introduksi yang terdiri dari A: ‘Oxheart’; B:‘Moskvich’; C: ‘Valencia’; D: ‘Marmande’; E: ‘Moneymaker’; F: ‘La Sweetie’; G: ‘Principle Borghese’; H:‘Golden Sunrise’; I: ‘Red Cherry’; J: ‘Black Cherry’; dan K: ‘Golden Jubille’. Hasil pengamatanam menunjukkanbahwa setiap kultivar tomat introduksi mempunyai respon pertumbuhan yang berbeda. Tomat ‘Black Cherry’menunjukan respon pertumbuhan yang terbaik dengan pertimbangan tinggi tanaman, tinggi tandan pertama,diameter batang tanaman, jumlah bunga per tandan, dan jumlah buah per tandan.Serta mempunyai ketahananterhadap serangan organisme pengganggu.Kata kunci: introduksi, pertumbuhan, tomatABSTRACTOne of the important horticultural crops in Indonensia is Tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.). Severalmethods can be used to improve productivity and quality of tomato such as by generating new tomato cultivar withdesired characters. To generate new cultivars therefore new selection in parental tomato is needed to get thepotential parental tomato as genetic background. The purpose of this study was to find out the potential tomatocultivars such as high productivity and quality, adaptive grown in Indonesia and also resistant to pest and disease.Eleven tomato cultivars introduction was used in this experiment consisted of A: 'Oxheart'; B: 'Moskvich'; C:'Valencia'; D: 'Marmande'; E: 'Moneymaker'; F: 'La Sweetie'; G: 'Principle Borghese'; H: 'Golden Sunrise'; I:'Red Cherry'; J: 'Black Cherry'; and K: 'Golden Jubille'. The results showed that each introduced tomato cultivarhas a different response to environmental condition. Tomato ‘Black Cherry’ showed the best plant growthcompared to other cultivars. It had the highest plant height; shoot diameter, no of flower per truss, and no of fruitper truss. The study was carried out through 10th November 2019 to 27th February 2020 at Grdarasha farm - College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences - Salahaddin University- Erbil. The experiment was to evaluate the influence of Mass plant (contains IBA and NAA) and Tonic (0, 0. 3, 0.6, and 0.9%) on three radish cultivars (white, red and black) growth. The interaction treatments between Mass plant and Tonic concentrations gave significant increase of growth parameters values over control of all studied cultivars, among studied cultivars, the plants of the black cultivar showed more significant increase in plant height, number of leaves, leaves fresh weight and chlorophyll content (49.00cm 17.333, 57.600gm and 58.100spad respectively). While, the best leaf length, width and area (25.667cm, 20.667cm, and 504.133cm2 respectively) were obtained in the same treatment but with white cultivar. While, the best ones for root length (27.000cm) was registered from Mass plant application and 0.9% Tonic in white cultivar, however the same treatment on black cultivar gave the best results of root diameter, fresh weight and volume (6.333cm, 60.667g and 56.667cm3 respectively) and the highest TSS% content was obtained in two treatments of black cultivar; 0 and 0.3 Tonic both under Mass plant application.

The research was conducted at Beltari Sandhikharka-10, Arghakhanchi district to study about the effect of various doses of boron on growth and yield attributing characters of cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) during off-season from February to June in 2020. Five treatments; B0 (control/no application), B1: 2kg/ha, B2: 4kg/ha, B3: 6kg/ha, B4: 8kg/ha which are the different doses of boron application were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 4 replications. The growth parameters like plant height, number of leaves per plant leaf length and leaf breadth of largest leaf were recorded multiple times with 15 days interval. Days to curd initiation and Days from curd initiation to harvest were recorded by regular field observation. The yield parameters; curd weight with leaves, Marketable curd weight, average curd yield, incidence of hollowing were recorded during harvest. The economics from application of boron doses in cauliflower production was obtained in terms of cost of cultivation, gross returns, net returns, and benefit cost ratio. The result showed that the growth and yield attributing characters of cauliflower were significantly affected by application of boron in which the value of these parameters was found significantly higher in B1 followed by other treatments. The average curd yield of cauliflower in B1 was found to be 12.39 mt/ha which was 48.92% higher than that of B0 with curd yield 8.32 mt/ha. Similarly, the net return was found significantly the highest in B1 and the lowest in B0. The result showed that application of boron in the range of 2-4 kg/ha is preferred to control and higher doses in respect of both productivity and economics.

Structural and physiological responses of chrysanthemum to repeated osmotic stress were studied. Plants were cultured for 2 weeks (for each stress1 and stress 2) on half MS supplemented with mannitol 100 mM (Treatment I) and 200 mM (Treatment II). First stress inhibited growth parameters stronger than second stress in treatment I. In treatment II both stress events strongly inhibited growth parameters of micro‐shoots. Proline content exceeded control 6 ‐ 8 times after 1st stress, and 2 ‐ 5 times after the 2nd stress in treatments I and II, respectively. Soluble protein was accumulated in leaves during both stress exposures, and 2 ‐ 2.5 times exceeded control after the 2nd stress. Relative water content in both treatments increased after the 2nd stress exposure. In treatment II chlorophyll а and carotenoids contents were 8.78 and 4.62 mg/g comparing to control (4.21 and 2.25 mg/g, respectively) after the 1st stress. Frankfurters are the most widespread type of emulsified meat product in the world. However, they could be considered unhealthy due to their high-fat content (15–30%). The meat industry wishes to change the perception of these products by reformulating them. One strategy is increasing the content of compounds considered beneficial for human health. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the chemical, physico-chemical, and sensorial properties of Frankfurter-type sausages added with roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.), extracts. Frankfurter-type sausages were made following a traditional formula. Three different formulations were prepared. The original mixture was used as a control sample (CS). The other samples were formulated by adding roselle extract at 4.08% (FRE4) and 8.17% (FRE8). For proximate analysis, no statistical differences were found between FRE4 and FRE8 and CS. However, the residual nitrite levels decreased from 88.41 mg NaNO2/kg in CS to 86.31 and 69.82 mg NaNO2/kg in FRE4 and FRE8, respectively. Regarding the sensory analysis of the frankfurters, CS and FRE4 samples generally scored significantly higher than FRE8 for all the parameters considered. This study suggests that the reformulation of Frankfurter-type sausages using roselle extracts is feasible and represents a viable alternative to improve the safety and the nutritional composition of the product.

This study used different supporting media (poly-styrene sheet, sand, and gravel) during outdoor hydroponic farming of onion within a natural environment setup. Domestic onion variety Taherpuri was taken as a model onion plant. As for performance parameters, plant height, number and length of leaf, length of root, bulb weight, number of bulblet, and chlorophyll contents were recorded. The number of produced leaves was almost same, although the length of leaf and root was found to have variations in these three supporting media. The yield (weight of bulb and number of bulblet) performance was slightly higher in polystyrene sheets (7.74 g and 3 bulblets per plant) than in the others. Chlorophyll-a, Chlorophyll-b, and total chlorophylls were comparatively higher in polystyrene sheets, 0.530, 0.764, and 1.294 mg/g respectively. Other growth parameters also showed better results in the case of polystyrene sheets. Finally, the results suggested that the polystyrene sheet as a hydroponic floating bed is suitable for outdoor hydroponics for onion cultivation.

Aim: Citrullus lanatus is a fruit widely consumed for its pulp though incompletely, as its other parts (seed and rind) are discarded and may possibly offer bioactive compounds involved in ameliorating certain disease conditions. Hence, this study aimed at comparatively investigating the nutritional composition and antioxidant properties of the seed, pulp and rind of C. lanatus so as to inform the inclusion of these different parts into the fare of the people. Methodology: Standard analytical methods of Association of Official Analytical Chemists were used to determine proximate, phytochemical, vitamin, mineral and antioxidant aspects of the fruit parts. The results were analyzed using Student’s t-test at .05. Results: The proximate analysis showed a high moisture value in the pulp (93.34 +/- .82) followed by the rind (77.11 +/- 3.44) and the seed (10.00 +/- .48). High crude protein and fiber contents were both noted in the seed followed by the rind and pulp. Mineral determinations revealed potassium to be abundant in the rind (452.31mg/kg) than the seed (305.7mg/kg) and the pulp (100.5mg/kg), followed by calcium occurring more in the rind (292.61mg/kg) than in the pulp (257.21mg/kg) and seed (227.45mg/kg) and then manganese being the least concentrated among the minerals. The investigated phytochemical principles revealed the highest concentration of cardiac glycosides in the seed (14.82 +/- .66) than the rind (1.95 +/- 0.80) and pulp (1.10 +/- 0.17), followed by saponins occurring most in the rind (12.05 +/- 3.91) than the seed (10.17 +/- 0.63) and pulp (.13 +/- .01). The seed had the highest DPPH scavenging activity followed by the rind and pulp respectively. The seed also showed a higher reducing power and lipid peroxidation capacities than the other fruit parts suggesting a potent property for antioxidant activity in the fruit parts of C. lanatus. Conclusion: The findings imply that both seed and rind of C. lanatus can be good sources of nutritional, phytochemical and antioxidant components in addition to the pulp which is commonly consumed and these may be implicated in management of certain diseases with further evidential research.

<p><em>Salvia multicaulis</em> is a widespread species of Lamiaceae family in Iran. There are many discussions about its infraspecific variations. Although some varieties were definite for this species in various parts of the world, no infraspecific taxon was reported in Iran and all samples of this species were named as S. multicaulis. In this study, morphological characteristics of S. multicaulis populations, naturally growing in Iran, was examined. Twenty-two traits were examined in 94 individuals of this species to<br />identify their phenotypic difference. Most of the investigated features were showing a high degree of variability, but it was highly pronounced for some characteristics such as basal leaf shape, basal leaf width, basal leaf length/ width ratio and basal petiole length. Significant positive/negative correlations were observed between some morphological variables. Furthermore, significant negative correlations were found between the eastern distribution of populations with basal leaf petiole length and basal leaf length/ width ratio. Based on the UPGMA cluster analysis, populations were divided into two main branches. The first branch contained four populations, while the second branch was bigger and clustered in two sub-branches. In one of them,<br />three populations and in another one the rest populations arranged in two groups. CA joined plot confirmed that each of studied populations or group of populations had distinct morphological trait(s), which were useful in identification of them. Our findings supported population no. 13 had unique morphological traits such as the largest bracts and basal leaf petiole, highest flower number of each inflorescence cycle, widest and largest calyx. The conservation of the highly diverse populations of<br />Iranian S. multicaulis is recommended.</p>

The proximate analysis of the fruit sample that homogenously sampled from the wild was taken and quartered to get appreciable weight fit for analysis. Due to it perishable nature the quartered sample for each of the fruit was stored in an air tight container and kept in the refrigerator at a temperature of about 4°C. For the determination of the nutritional composition, parameters which include their proximate, minerals, and vitamin C were quantitatively determined while the anti-nutrient composition were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. Compared to ackee’s apple, monkey cola was found to consist of 64.41% moisture content, 1.69% ash, 10.21% crude fibre, 1.25% crude fat, 4.44% crude fibre, 18.06% carbohydrates while ackee’s apple consist of 73.21% moisture, 1.49% ash, 9.38 % crude protein, 13.98% crude fat, 2.08% crude fibre, 0.86% carbohydrates and 4.45% of vitamin C. The mineral analysis for both samples was quantitatively determined using Atomic Absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The minerals determined for ackee’s apple and monkey cola were magnesium which was 1391.65 ppm, calcium 628.23 ppm, sodium 506.96 ppm, potassium 3976.14 ppm, iron 1.0 ppm, copper 5.00, zinc 4.00, cobalt 3.0 and phosphorus 2616.90 ppm the iron however, was not detected. Ackee’s apple on the other hand, consist of magnesium 498.01 ppm, calcium 478.56 ppm, sodium 398.80 ppm, potassium 4970.18 ppm, copper 2.00, zinc 5.00, cobalt 3.0 and phosphorus 373.84 ppm. The qualitative screening of the anti-nutrients revealed the absence of phenol from both fruit samples while tannins were present only in the monkey cola. The flavonoids, phytic acid and oxalate were quantitatively determined to be 1240 mg, 625 mg and 155 mg for Monkey kola and 640 mg, 340 mg and 65 mg for Ackee’s apple.
