Salah satu jenis tanaman hortikultura penting yang banyak dikembangkan di Indonesia adalah tanamantomat (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill). Beberapa cara dapat dilakukan untuk meningkatkan produksi dan kualitastanaman yang salah satunya adalah dengan mendapatkan varietas unggul baru. Pada tahapan ini maka perludiseleksi terlebih dahulu jenis tomat yang mempunyai hasil baik dan toleran terhadap gangguan organismepenggangu tanaman (OPT). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendapatkan kultivar tomat yang baik dari segipertumbuhan yang dapat dijadikan sebagai sumber genetik untuk bahan persilangan. Dalam percobaan inidilakukan identifikasi dan karakterisasi 11 kultivar tomat hasil introduksi yang terdiri dari A: ‘Oxheart’; B:‘Moskvich’; C: ‘Valencia’; D: ‘Marmande’; E: ‘Moneymaker’; F: ‘La Sweetie’; G: ‘Principle Borghese’; H:‘Golden Sunrise’; I: ‘Red Cherry’; J: ‘Black Cherry’; dan K: ‘Golden Jubille’. Hasil pengamatanam menunjukkanbahwa setiap kultivar tomat introduksi mempunyai respon pertumbuhan yang berbeda. Tomat ‘Black Cherry’menunjukan respon pertumbuhan yang terbaik dengan pertimbangan tinggi tanaman, tinggi tandan pertama,diameter batang tanaman, jumlah bunga per tandan, dan jumlah buah per tandan.Serta mempunyai ketahananterhadap serangan organisme pengganggu.Kata kunci: introduksi, pertumbuhan, tomatABSTRACTOne of the important horticultural crops in Indonensia is Tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.). Severalmethods can be used to improve productivity and quality of tomato such as by generating new tomato cultivar withdesired characters. To generate new cultivars therefore new selection in parental tomato is needed to get thepotential parental tomato as genetic background. The purpose of this study was to find out the potential tomatocultivars such as high productivity and quality, adaptive grown in Indonesia and also resistant to pest and disease.Eleven tomato cultivars introduction was used in this experiment consisted of A: 'Oxheart'; B: 'Moskvich'; C:'Valencia'; D: 'Marmande'; E: 'Moneymaker'; F: 'La Sweetie'; G: 'Principle Borghese'; H: 'Golden Sunrise'; I:'Red Cherry'; J: 'Black Cherry'; and K: 'Golden Jubille'. The results showed that each introduced tomato cultivarhas a different response to environmental condition. Tomato ‘Black Cherry’ showed the best plant growthcompared to other cultivars. It had the highest plant height; shoot diameter, no of flower per truss, and no of fruitper truss. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a produção, a qualidade e tempo de prateleira de cultivares de tomate tipo italiano de crescimento determinado, produzidos sob ambiente protegido em condições de altas temperaturas. O cultivo foi realizado em Nova Mutum – MT, foram avaliados cinco cultivares: Fascínio (Feltrin sementes), Hy Color (Horticeres), Santa Adélia (TopSeed), SM-16 (Seminis) e Supera F1 (TopSeed), dispostos em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. As plantas foram conduzidas em “meia estaca” e não foram podadas. Os parâmetros avaliados foram relativos a produção, a qualidade dos frutos, tempo de prateleira e qualidade no pós-colheita. A cultivar Fascínio apresentou produtividade de 186,1 t ha-1, maior massa média de frutos (144,3g), maior calibre de fruto, (60,7mm), e menor perda de massa no pós-colheita (6,23%). Os melhores resultados de sólidos solúveis totais dos frutos que completaram a maturação na planta foram obtidos das cultivares Santa Adélia (4,3), Fascínio (4,27) e Hy Color (4,21), e dos frutos colhidos no estádio verde-maduro obteve destaque a cultivar Santa Adélia (5,85), e os frutos que ficaram em temperatura ambiente obtiveram maior média de sólidos solúveis totais (5,55). Palavras-chave: termotolerância; Lycopersicum esculentum Mill; produtividade; pós colheita; ambiente protegido.   The performance of determinate growth italian tomato cultivars in protected cropping under high temperatures   ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the production, quality and shelf time of determinate growth Italian tomato cultivars from a protected environment under high temperature conditions.  The cultivation was conducted in Nova Mutum, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Five cultivars were evaluated: ‘Fascínio’ (Feltrin Sementes), ‘Hy Color’ (Horticeres), ‘Santa Adélia’ (TopSeed), ‘SM-16’ (Seminis) and ‘Supera F1’ (TopSeed), disposed in randomized blocks with four repetitions. The plants were managed into the “meia estaca” tutoring method and were not pruned. The parameters evaluated were related to the production, quality of fruits, shelf time and postharvest quality. The ‘Fascínio’ cultivar presented productivity of 186.1 t ha-1, the largest average fruit weight (144.3 g), the largest fruit gauge (60.7 mm) and the smallest postharvest weight loss (6.23%). The total soluble solids best results of fruits that have matured in the plant were obtained from the ‘Santa Adélia’ (4.3), ‘Fascínio’ (4.27) e ‘Hy Color’ (4.21) cultivars. Among the fruits harvested at the mature-green stage, the ‘Santa Adélia’ (5.85) cultivar stood out. The fruits that stayed at room temperature obtained the largest total soluble solids average (5.55). This overview substantiates the possibility and expediency of blackberry breeding in Central Russia, where it is in demand, but not widespread in horticulture. Significant achievements of world breeding, which gave modern cultivars a large set of economically important qualities and growing interest in it all over the world, including Russian gardeners, make it relevant to work with blackberries as an object of selection, and as a promising garden plant. However, insufficient frost and winter hardiness of the bulk of the cultivars of this culture cause certain difficulties when growing it in the areas with cold winters to which the Central zone of Russia belongs. The expansion of the market of berry products also imposes increasingly high requirements on the complex of economic indicators of new cultivars, primarily the quality of blackberry fruit. In this regard, improving the existing range of varieties of the culture, increasing its adaptive properties and commodity qualities of berries are urgent tasks for breeders when creating new cultivars. The relevance of blackberry breeding is also dictated by the fact that in Russia its domestic range of varieties is represented by only one modern cultivar obtained in the southern region and adapted, first of all, to it. For the Central zone of the country, the cultivars of this plant have not been developed (except for the limited experiments of I.V. Michurin conducted almost 100 years ago). Therefore, the breeding of adapted cultivars of the culture in the climatic conditions of this region may be promising. It is also possible to grow here (with shelter for the winter) the cultivars already created abroad that can give with the right agricultural technology a good industrial harvest, which is confirmed by the practice of amateur and farm gardening, as well as scientific research. The purpose of this work is to designate the leading directions of blackberry breeding, the most important in the conditions of Central Russia and to show prospects of the development of new cultivars of this valuable culture in the specified climatic zone. The analysis of world trends and experience in the blackberry breeding and variety study, as well as the results of our own research of the culture conducted in the Orel region, allow us to consider it promising and relevant to work on improving the range of varieties of this plant in Central Russia. All priority areas of blackberry breeding, indicated in foreign and domestic breeding programs (winter hardiness, high quality of fresh and processed fruit, the correct shape of berries, their large size, the necessary values of biochemical composition, high productivity of plants, thornless shoots and high resistance to diseases and pests), are relevant for this region of our country, while high winter hardiness is currently the most important of them.

This work investigates the growth and physiological responses of locally grown tomato cultivars with a known hybrid (Roma-VF cultivars). Seeds of two tomato cultivars: Roma VF (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.Cv) was collected from National Horticulture Research Institute (NIHORT), Ibadan while the Local tomato: Ife-1 (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. Cv) obtained from the market woman in the central market, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- Ife. The seed of the plant were planted in perforated plastic containers containing soil collected at the base of hill 1(latitude 7’3’9.40 and longitude 4’3’24.52) in Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Osun State. The containers placed where they can have access to direct sunlight. The growth parameters of the plants were determined which include the leaf length, width and the shoot size was observed. The weight and growth rate of the shoot were determined. The fruits obtained from all the cultivar were exposed to proximate analysis. It was observed that the shoot of the two cultivars increased in the course of the experiment but at the end the shoot of Roma () was longer than that of local cultivar. More number of leaves was present in Roma compare to local one. Roma has higher moisture content (5.9% M.C)) than the local cultivar (4.7% M.C). Average number of fruits in Roma was (15) which is higher than that of local one (10). From all the parameters observed in this work it was observed that Roma cultivar which is a hybrid do far better in all indication than the local tomato cultivar. This may be as a result of Roma hybrid characteristics such as resistances to disease and unfavorable environmental factors. Equally the improved nutritional value of the Roma tomato and lot of genetically modified features are key to this cultivar (Roma) advancement.

Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is the type member of the genus Orthotospovirus in the family Tospoviridae and order Bunyavirales. TSWV, transmitted by several species of thrips, causes significant disease losses to agronomic and horticultural crops worldwide, impacting both the yield and quality of the produce. Management strategies include growing virus-resistant cultivars, cultural practices, and managing thrips vectors through pesticide application. However, numerous studies have reported that TSWV isolates can overcome host-plant resistance, while thrips are developing resistance to pesticides that were once effective. RNA interference (RNAi) offers a means of host defence by using double-stranded (ds) RNA to initiate gene silencing against invading viruses. However, adoption of this approach requires production and use of transgenic plants and thus limits the practical application of RNAi against TSWV and other viruses. To fully utilize the potential of RNAi for virus management at the field level, new and novel approaches are needed. In this review, we summarize RNAi and highlight the potential of topical or exogenous application of RNAi triggers for managing TSWV and thrips vectors.

Strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa Duch.) production requires the input of large amounts of water provided by irrigation during the entire production cycle. However, water availability is shrinking in many important strawberry cropping areas, such as Huelva (in Europe), compromising the environmental sustainability and economic viability of strawberry production. Besides technical approaches, water-saving strategies are necessary for improving strawberry water productivity such as the use of low water-consumptive cultivars with high productivity or cultivars allowing deficit irrigation (DI) strategies. A two-year field experiment was conducted to compare the physiological and agronomical response of six commercial strawberry cultivars (‘Sabrina’, ‘Fortuna’, ‘Splendor’, ‘Primoris’, ‘Rabida’ and ‘Rociera’) to six different water treatments ranging from 65% to 140% of estimated ‘Sabrina’ evapotranspiration (ETcSab; ~224–510 mm year−1). Cultivars differed substantially in yield and water consumption linked to their biomass partitioning into reproductive/ vegetative organs, determining different yield efficiency (YE). Their water needs (IN) conditioned their response to different water supplies, involving significant yield losses in DI treatments (<20% IN) but not decreasing fruit quality. The highly-consumptive and productive ‘Rabida’ and ‘Rociera’, reduced yields by DI (<40%) but were still profitable; the low-water-consumptive but still productive ‘Fortuna’, ‘Splendor’ and ‘Primoris’ represent significant water-savings (<20%) in strawberry cultivation.

Agaricus Bisporus is an edible button mushroom that is highly perishable with an extremely short shelf-life at ambient temperature. This work aims to evaluate some antioxidant activities, oxidation enzymes, and determine postharvest qualities of nano-coated mushrooms with the combination of chitosan (CHN) component during storage at 4 °C for (0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 days). Silica/CHN Film strongly delayed the mushroom respiratory spike onset and blocked carbon dioxide passage from inside to the outside, while Titanium/CHN Film (0.035 mmol s−1 kg−1) established the lowest O2 production rate and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances production (6.21 nmol g−1). Silica/CHN Film was mainly effectual for the polyphenol contents (0.39 g kg−1) and antioxidant activities (78.14% and 71.09%) for DPPH and ABTS+ radical scavenging activities, respectively. The results reported that Silica/CHN Film induced the highest (catalase and ascorbate peroxidase) activities, while Titanium/CHN Film recorded the highest (peroxidase and superoxide dismutase) activities of antioxidant enzymes. Besides, Titanium/CHN Film preserved relatively lower contents of hydrogen peroxide (22.40 µmol g−1) and hydroxyl radical (0.16 µmol g−1). In a word, nano-materials used in coating films such as titanium or even silica with the combination of CHN can directly reduce the cell degradation, oxidation processes and enhance the harvested horticultural crops.

The present work had as objective to evaluate the physical-chemical characteristics of commercial tomato fruits grafted on different solanaceous species. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in a randomized complete block design, with four blocks and six treatments, being the rootstocks: cocona (Solanum sessiliflorum); two cultivars of eggplant (Solanum aethiopicum), Long Light Green and Big Hill; jurubeb&atilde;o (Solanum lycocarpum) and jurubeba juna (Solanum stramonifolium), grafted with the tomato cultivar Santa Cruz Kada, and the control treatment was represented by the self-grafted tomato. Three consecutive harvests were spaced seven days after the production stabilization, and the characteristics fruits analyzed were Total Soluble Solids (&ordm;Brix), pH, Titratable Acidity (percentage of citric acid) and TSS/TA. A statistically significant difference was found in the Tukey&rsquo;s test at 5% probability in the titratable acidity, pH and fruit pulp flavor, among the evaluated treatments, while the soluble solids content did not differ between treatments in any of the harvests, but the values remained within the considered adequate for the tomato in natura in the current literature. There was a decrease in fruit flavor in all treatments, and fruit pH drop in all treatments with the exception of jurubeb&atilde;o, with the advancement of plant age, while the titratable acidity had an inverse behavior. The evaluated rootstocks can be used in the tomato crop, without prejudice to the quality of the tomato fruit produced.
