scholarly journals Adolescent’s Perception of Father’s Leadership Style in the Family

A father’s leadership style plays an important role in educating their young and building a happy family. Generally, there are three types of leadership styles for a family, authoritative (democratic), authoritarian (control) and laissez faire (permissive). Nevertheless there are some fathers who fail to properly lead their families and do not have the capacity to be exemplary towards their young due to their nature being coarse, ill-tempered, inconsiderate, irresponsible, unconcered or indifferent, autocratic, dislike for discussion with their young and so on. Therefore, this research is conducted to study adolescents’ perception of their father’s leadership style. It is designed as a survey study with questionnaire as the main research instrument. Research respondents total 454 form four students randomly selected from five schools in Hulu Langat district of Selangor. Data obtained from questionnaires are descriptively analyzed using SPSS version 22. Research results find that item ‘my father gives me freedom to choose my own friends so long as they invite me to goodness’ scored the highest mean value ( mean=3.53), followed by item ‘my father gives me the freedom to choose my own ambition and career with his guidance‘ (mean=3.51). These findings show that authoritative leadership is more used by fathers in this research. The implications of this research may assist fathers to strengthen their leadership style in bringing up their adolescents to build their potential for excellence.

Scholarly works have shown that one of the outstanding factors of organizational commitment has been leadership, which relates to the style adopted by the leader and the impact it has on the commitment level of employees for performance. The aim of this research was to explore the effect of leadership styles on organizational commitment. Transformational, transactional, and laissez faire styles of leadership were examined. A cross-sectional survey of 151 employees at a public sector agency in Abuja, Nigeria, was conducted. The research employed a quantitative approach to the collection of data using questionnaire administration. All questionnaire items were assessed using the five-point Likert scale. Inferential statistics in research was carried out using multiple regression technique to substantiate the survey findings. Based on the Great man theory, Contingency theory and Behavioural theory, the study confirms that transformational, transactional and laissez faire leadership styles and organizational commitment were statistically associated. In terms of contribution to the model, the explanatory variables jointly contributed 68.2 percent in explaining organizational commitment. On individual contribution, transformational leadership style contributed the most, 58.6 percent to the model while transactional leadership style contributed 11.8 percent to the model and finally laissez-faire leadership style contributed 11.2 percent to organizational commitment in the study context. The study therefore recommends that AEA should use continuous transformational leadership style practices to sustain high employee commitment and organizational effectiveness. Also, AEA should apply a bit of both transactional and laissez faire leadership styles from time to time depending on the situation of things at the workplace as there is no particular leadership style that is one-size fit all but depends on situation at hand. One realistic implication that could be learned from this study is that in order to minimize employee turnover, managers need to implement affirmative strategies that will benefit the establishment.

Background and objectives. The relationship between leadership styles and job performance draws considerable attention from recent researchers. The main objective of this study was to determine the impact of leadership style (autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire) on job performance from nurse’s points of view at Benghazi Medical Centre. Method. This study was a descriptive questionnaire-based study conducted on 100 nurses working at Benghazi Medical Centre, Libya. To analyze the data (mean, standard deviation, ANOVA test were used. Furthermore, multiple regressions and Pearson correlation were used to determine whether a relationship exists between the independent and dependent variables. Result. Of 100, only 60 questionnaires were completed, giving a response rate of 60%. The findings of this study indicated that democratic was the most dominantly used in the hospital, followed by the autocratic and laissez-faire leadership styles. Whereas, the laissez-faire leadership style had a strong positive and significant impact on performance (R2= .333; P < 0.01). Conclusion. Laissez-faire leadership style positively affected nurses’ performance. Future research that might be relevant to be further explored are worth.

Earlier notions of leadership opined that leadership can be found in one's genes that determine how an individual behaves and reacts to his/her surrounding (Bass, 1985). That is, a leader can still be detected in a group of people although nobody may be appointed to lead at the outset. In the past, an individual became a leader through inheritance of a rank or the throne in a country or in an institution. However, the temperament or characteristic of an individual determine whether one can lead or not. A leader acts as a conflict contributor, a resolver or peacemaker, and a punisher (King et al., 2009). Besides being dominant over the rest of the group members, a leader needs to influence the followers too with his/her leadership style. The leadership style of a leader depends on the attitude of him/her to influencing followers in the organisation. The modern era indicates that an uncertainty or complex situations are not uncommon. In a context of a small and medium enterprises (SMEs), turbulences arising in an enterprise require an effective leader to sustain a strong sense of opportunity for all followers. Such participation allows followers to share opinions, make better decisions and control the resources. In fact, followers and the leader cannot be separated. Likewise, leadership runs in tandem with development. Development occurs as leadership pushes it (Banyai, 2009). Hence, without proper leadership to lead the followers, it would be rather difficult to reach the mutual goals of the enterprise (Poskas & Messer, 2015). Also, a good leadership through guidance and effective communication enables followers to improve themselves. Hence, to conduct a relevant systematic review, the current paper is guided by the following main research question: how are leadership styles practiced among leaders in the context of small and medium enterprises? The focus of this paper is on the leaders of small and medium enterprises where followers are working together towards achieving the mutual goals of the enterprise. Since leaders can have a strong influence on the employees’ behavior, various approaches have been designed to determine the most effective style of leadership. As a field of study, the review of past research reveals that investigating leadership styles has been mainly focused on large businesses. Despite the great importance of leadership to SMEs, not many studies attempted to explore the leadership style embraced by SMEs, especially within the Macedonian context. The purpose of this study is to explore the presence of different leadership styles (autocratic, democratic and laissez-faire) in Macedonian SME. Moreover, in view of the main research objective, several demographic variables were examined, such as gender, age and working experience as to their relevance for the dominant leadership style, with a special focus on managers of small and medium sized businesses from the textile industry. Using a Leadership Style Questionnaire, the research measured different leadership styles in addition to collecting in-depth demographic data on each of the respondents. The research results have indicated that the democratic leadership is the dominant style of Macedonian textile SMEs.

Given the need for a different approach to leadership, as well as the need for further investigation on leadership among family businesses, this study investigates several value-laden leadership styles among family businesses. More specifically the primary objective is to establish the levels of Servant, Ethical, Authentic, and Participative leadership displayed by family business owners and the influence thereof on the Perceived business performance of the family business. A survey was undertaken and 266 usable questionnaires were returned from 133 family business owners and 133 from family business employees. The data analysis involved calculating descriptive statistics and undertaking t-tests. Multiple regression analysis (MRA) was done to test the hypothesised relationships. Although the MRA analysis revealed no statistically significant relationships between the leadership styles investigated and Perceived business performance, the vast majority of respondents agreed that the styles investigated were displayed by the family business owners. For both sample groups Ethical leadership returned the highest mean score, followed by Servant and Participative leadership. The importance of these value-laden leadership styles to family businesses is thus highlighted, contradicting the literature that family businesses owners are often autocratic in their leadership style. In addition, increased clarity on the effectiveness of these value-laden leadership styles within the context of family business is provided.

This study investigated the transformational leadership skills and leadership styles of the public elementary school administrators in Bokod District, Bokod, Benguet. Data gathered were summarized, analyzed and cross-tabulated. Descriptive statistics like weighted mean, percentages and ranks were computed from test results. Responses from the respondents were also classified according to the number of years as an administrator and the kind of designation whether a) Principal, b) Head Teacher, c) Teacher-in-Charge. Analysis for transformational leadership survey measured leadership skills on six factors: Charisma, Social, Vision, Transactional, Delegation, and Execution while analysis for the leadership style survey determined the leadership styles of the respondents whether they are authoritarian, democratic or laissez-faire. The public elementary school administrators of Bokod District have generally varied transformational leadership skills and leadership styles. The leadership styles practiced by the respondents regardless of the number of years as administrators and the kind of designations are Democratic followed by Laissez-faire and last, Authoritarian style of leadership. It is recommended that Charisma as transformational leadership skill be revisited and be strengthened by the school administrators, and the interplay of the different leadership styles is paramount in school management. Hence, the principals, head teachers and teachers-in-charge need to be flexible in their management at all times.

Leaders can influence the behavior of their followers through the use of different leadership styles. Therefore, the leadership style is viewed as a key determinant of organizational effectiveness. In recent years, leadership trends are changing rapidly, and paradigm shifts in leadership are occurring all over the world. There has especially been a significant expansion of research on contemporary leadership styles. This chapter reviews the most popular and influential leadership styles currently used and present a comprehensive view of two leadership approaches. The purpose of this chapter is to investigate the theoretical perspective of the transformational and relational leadership styles among contemporary leadership approaches. It is expected that research results will be a source for both educational and business contexts.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the leadership style of a chief audit executive (CAE) and the perceived effectiveness of the internal auditing (IA) function that he/she leads. Perceived IA effectiveness is based on identified attributes in the literature influencing IA effectiveness. The aim of this paper is thus to expand the IA effectiveness debate by adding individual differences in CAEs’ leadership styles as a research focus. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative approach is followed. A survey was conducted on a sample of 58 IA students enrolled in a master’s degree programme at a South African university; all students hold senior positions in IA. Findings The study confirms that the CAE leadership style significantly influences the identified attributes of perceived IA effectiveness. It further shows that the traditional conceptualisation of leadership (as transformational, transactional and/or laissez-faire) might not be appropriate for or compatible with leaders of professional teams in a regulated environment. Practical implications Practically, the study identifies and explores attributes influencing IA effectiveness that are within the purview of the CAE’s leadership style and within his/her ability to influence. This information could (re)direct leadership development training programmes presented in industry and by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), and at organisational level, it could inform appointment and retention and succession practices for heads of and senior management in IA. Social implications CAEs are cautioned about the limitations imposed by laissez-faire leadership on IA effectiveness. They should strive to become both transformative and transactional leaders as it has a significant influence on the effectiveness of their IA functions, and by being more effective, they can demonstrate the value proposition of IA. Organisations need to create the environment in which CAEs can act as transformational and transactional leaders. The IIA, as the pre-eminent professional body, could become involved in developing leadership skills of its members. The IIA could provide guidance on leadership styles for CAEs and could also offer formal training initiatives to internal auditors on skills needed to lead IA teams. Originality/value This paper may open a new research area in IA effectiveness by focussing on the role and leadership qualities of the CAE.

Leadership style has often been considered as one of the vital factors that can enhance employees’ commitment and it is seen as the live wire for the attainment of organizational goals. Although research has focused on the nexus between leadership styles and employees’ commitment, little consideration has been paid to identify the influence of demographic variables on the nexus between leadership styles and employees’ commitment in Nigeria, thereby leaving a gap. It is based on the foregoing that this article examines the relationship between leadership styles (transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership) and employees’ commitment and also identify the influence of demographic variables on the relationship between leadership styles and employees’ commitment in Lagos State Civil Service Commission of Nigeria. The survey data were collected from the employees of the organization, and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0 was used for the statistical analysis. The results show that there is a significant medium positive relationship between transformational leadership style and employees’ commitment, whereas transactional leadership style shows an insignificant small negative relationship with employees’ commitment. In addition, laissez-faire leadership style has an insignificant small positive relationship with employees’ commitment in the study context. The study, therefore, recommends that employees’ commitment is more likely to be achieved when the appropriate leadership style is adopted and specific demographic variables like gender, age, marital status, academic qualification, and employment status are taken into account regarding the role they play in the relationship between leadership styles and employees’ commitment of Lagos State Civil Service Commission of Nigeria.
