Dissemination of new digital technologies is linked with the adoption of new solutions that give shape to relationships between those who offer goods and services in the market and their consumers. In past decades, not all new projects have been commercialised successfully, which explains why one needs to examine the reasons behind a success or failure in putting in place new business models involving elements of digital technologies. This paper discusses a comparative analysis of two cases. Rapid growth of the Californian start-up Airbnb, an operator of a virtual platform in the flat-sharing business that, on the one hand, helps people rent out their properties and, on the other hand, helps travellers find short-term lodging is an example of global success. The non-implementation of the Energy Citizen project demonstrates that, despite a number of advantages, the prosumer model in generating and consuming energy from renewable energy sources so far has fallen short of success. Comparative analysis has helped us to conclude that to be commercially successful in the digital economy one needs a virtual platform operator capable of finding a business model attractive to all operators in a selected market segment. Ensuring benefits to consumers as well as to operators whooffer their goods or services in the market is the pre-condition.

The article provides an overview of trends in the digital economy that affect the professional training of a modern specialist. The essence of the concept of digitalization and its main components are determined, the author's interpretation of this concept is given. Particular attention is paid to the signs of a digital economy: the presence of a high-tech IT infrastructure, processing of big data based on modern digital technologies, the creation of digital solutions (products, platforms), the design of new business models. A theoretical analysis of scientific literature was carried out and a list of competencies that a specialist in the digital economy should possess was identified. To confirm the results obtained, an analysis of the opinions of employers was carried out, on the basis of which the most significant competencies and professional qualities of a specialist in the digital economy were identified. Based on the results of the analysis of employers' requirements for modern specialists, the tasks of vocational education for the training of a specialist in the digital economy were identified.

Currently there are many studies which deal with the impact of the Internet and Internet technology-based tools on organizations. Most of them are focused on such issues as the opportunities which have emerged with the development of the digital economy, possible new business models, establishing new kind of relations with customers, and security aspects. The impact of Internet technology-based tools on the internal work environment of organizations is an issue which is relatively rarely analyzed. Although more and more publications concerning this field are being released, they are only focused to a small degree on the challenges connected with the utilization, and, particularly, the misuse, of Internet technology-based tools in the workplace. Thus, this article is an attempt to deal with this issue in a more holistic way.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss digital transformation and its four trajectories – digital technology, digital strategy, customer experience and data-driven business models – that could shape the next generation of services. This includes a discussion on whether both the market and organizations are all ready for the digital change and what are the opportunities that will enable firms to create and capture value though new business models. Design/methodology/approach Providing services is a proven and effective way to secure a competitive position, deliver long-term stable revenues and open up new market opportunities. However, it is also clear that some organisations are struggling to digitally transform. Therefore, the commentary provides a brief insight into how firms explore the possibilities of digital transformation and navigate these uncharted waters. Findings Today’s digital technologies affect the organisation outside and in, enabling the creation of new business models and transforming the customer experience. The incumbents are acutely aware that they need to transform strategically – to build new networks and value chains. Originality/value This commentary extends earlier work exploring the digital disruption within services to highlight a number of connected areas: the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation at a strategic level, as well as understanding and enhancing the customer experience and seeing how new data-driven business models can underpin service transformation.

AbstractThe German private health insurers (PKV) face different obstacles for a further successful development. On the one hand the PKV system lacks from adequate incentive structures to overcome forms of moral hazard and supplier-induced demand which becomes more relevant with respect to demographic- related care. On the other hand PKV must develop new business models for a demand-driven health care market. The latter challenge also threats the statutory health care insurers but their market powers as well as some governance reforms in the past have strengthened GKV-insurers in order to get more efficient. At least, PKV has to adapt its own business strategy to be prepared for the main topic of future health care: implementation of innovation within a continuous demographic change.

Recently, the number of businesses using digital technologies has increased. The service sector is no exception. The article is devoted to the use of digital technologies in the service sector. The authors reviewed the advantages and threats of digitalization. As a result of the analysis, the concept of “digital economy” and “service sector” is clarified, and the need for digitalization is justified. The advantages obtained through the use of innovative technologies, both for the industry and for individual enterprises, are indicated. In relation to the industry, this will include: the use of new business models and forms of doing business; increasing the availability and promotion of services on the market up to the world; the emergence of new types of services; the use of control systems that replace humans. As a result of the analysis, the concept of “digital economy” and “service sector” has been clarified, and the need for digitalization is justified. For a single service enterprise, the benefits of implementing digital technologies can be expressed in: reaching the optimal consumer segment; determining the customer’s need for certain services; designing more flexible services; improving the quality of service by improving control of business processes; minimizing the time for services to enter the market; reducing costs by accelerating business processes; minimizing costs; increasing the availability of services through the dissemination of information in social networks; eliminating intermediaries in the delivery of services to the consumer and reducing costs, reducing the number of personnel performing routine operations. Digitalization provides not only the benefits but also pose a threat. These include various types of fraudulent schemes, an underdeveloped regulatory framework, a reduction in the number of employees, and changes in the labor market. As a result, there are increasing requirements for planning at the strategic, tactical and operational levels. Otherwise, the benefits of implementing digital technologies may be lost

Innovation is a new idea, object, or practice like scientific knowledge, technical products, application method, and tools which are viewed as new facilitators of problem-solving, on-the-spot acceptance, procedure, community, structure, and technology. The number of research in the field of economics have determined that innovation is about creation as well as the adoption of new business models, new product and services. Technological innovations are especially important because they drive the progress of societies. In a competitive business setting, enterprise and entrepreneur or business leaders should continuously pursue new openings/opportunities and make the needed arrangements for converting them into new products, goods, and services. But a new idea scientific method, product, practice, application method, and the tool does not turn out to be an innovation until adopted broadly and integrated into diffusion "a special type of communication process comprising some stages by which an innovation is communicated through certain channels over time among the members of a social system". This paper attempts to clarify in depth the concept of creativity and its distribution to consumers or adopters.

Even though rural entrepreneurship and rural innovation have been studied for decades, the advent of social media, mobile, analytics, cloud computing, and internet of things—also referred to as digital technologies—has provided new opportunities and challenges for this vast discipline. As a result of the advent of digital technologies, we see new business models, new processes, products, and services emerging in the market. Such opportunities challenge the orthodox view of IT use and innovation, opening new avenues for researches, and challenges the existing theoretical understanding. This chapter is an attempt to understand the existing literature on rural innovation and entrepreneurship in information systems discipline and to identify opportunities for rural entrepreneurship and innovation in the digital era.
