AbstractA qualitative case study was used to examine the experiences and perceptions of foreigners during interactions with small- and medium-sized enterprises in the Seoul Metropolitan Area.  Two constructs, intercultural communications and consumer language, were used to identify difficulties that foreigners experienced during service encounters.  In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 participants based on a purposive sampling frame of 62 foreign professors. The transcripts were entered into MAXqda software and coded.  The data across all the cases were compared to identify patterns and themes that emerged using a cross-case synthesis. The implications included Koreans being approach avoidant during interactions with foreign consumers, and foreigners being treated politely.  Limitations of the study included the use of purposive sampling and utilizing participants only in South Korea.  Recommendations for practice included the use of signs and greetings in various languages, creating programs to educate SMEs about the use of English as a competitive advantage, and offering language and culture classes to foreigners.  Recommendations for future research include a mixed method study on the convenience level of spoken Korean for foreign consumers in high- and low-involvement service encounters and a qualitative multivariate regression study to further explore approach avoidance tendencies of SMEs.

The central question to be examined revolves around the attitudes and awareness of HIV/AIDS among mineworkers at a mine. Semi-standardised questionnaires were used to conduct in-depth interviews on a one-on-one basis. The findings revealed that workers had a great lack of knowledge about AIDS. While some workers had a detailed knowledge of the disease and its prevention, others were either completely ignorant about it or were in denial of its existence. The study serves as a tool and a framework of reference to the mine management on the areas of concern, to put great emphasis on IEC, in order to combat the spread of the disease in the mine. Recommendations are proposed for future research, policy making and practice in the area of HIV/AIDS.These will be in line with the factors influencing mineworkers’ perceptions of the epidemic.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the experiences of donors to a UK-based contemporary music organisation fundraising scheme through the theoretical lens of liminality.Design/methodology/approachIn-depth interviews with 16 members of the Sound Investment scheme investigated the motivations and experiences of individual donors to the commissioning of new music. Thematic analysis suggested parallels with the framework of “liminality,” which shed new light on the ways in which membership changed donors' relationships with the organisation and audience.FindingsMotivations for supporting contemporary music commissioning included personal interest, cultural responsibility and alignment to the values of the organisation. Tangible benefits, particularly access to rehearsals, brought donors into closer connection with the creative and managerial working of the organisation.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample did not include any lapsed donors, or people who had chosen not to participate. Future research could test the liminal framework in different artforms and through different tangible benefits.Practical implicationsUnderstanding donors as liminals could help arts organisations to develop membership schemes that more effectively sustain individual giving. Key elements of involvement and access are identified that could engage audiences more widely.Originality/valueThis case study foregrounds lived experience of arts donors where previous literature has primarily focussed on motivations for donating. It highlights the liminal elements of becoming an individual donor, namely, the integration and socialisation processes, the space-and time-bound interactions with the organisation and the alignment of values with the organisation. This framework offers a new way for arts organisations to understand and enhance individual giving in a time of austerity.

The perspectives of modern South Korean youth on Russia and perspectives of Russian youth on South Korea respectively are reconstructed and interpreted in this article. The research was conducted on the basis of analysis of 100 in-depth interviews with Russian and South Korean student youth (50 students in each group), specializing in Russian-Korean relations, intercultural communications and language of the country studied. Natural and geographic factors, historical and cultural associations, the image of the countrys citizens are found to be the main South Korean students perspectives on Russia. Economic system, the image of the countrys citizens, historical and cultural features of the country represent the main Russian students perspectives on South Korea. In general, mutual images of each country contain many stereotypes which are mediocre for common perception. Such stereotypical thinking and the lack of knowledge about modern socio-economic realities among future specialists in Russian-Korean relations may be a serious obstacle that places under risk effectiveness of further cooperation between the two sides.

Purpose – Managing container shipping logistics requires people with good competencies, especially in the time of new challenges. The purpose of this paper is to validate a new framework of competencies for container shipping logistics professionals. Design/methodology/approach – The competency framework was proposed through a comprehensive literature review process followed by in-depth interviews with senior maritime logistics executives both in Singapore and South Korea. It contains three groups of business-, logistics- and management-related competencies, with each group further being classified into generalist and maritime-specific skills and knowledge. A confirmatory survey was also conducted in both countries. Data were analyzed using the SPSS software and thematic analysis technique. Findings – It was found that all competencies proposed in this framework are important and perceived to contribute to work performance of container shipping logisticians. Findings also revealed that those competencies related to management are more important and can contribute to work performance of container shipping logisticians more than those of logistics and business nature. Originality/value – The proposed and validated framework is original as it is the first framework for container shipping logisticians. This lays the background for future research on competency-based education and training programs for logisticians in container shipping logistics and other sectors of the maritime supply chain. Findings of this research can help senior management identify important competencies which are critical for container shipping logisticians to acquire, and design subsequent training and education programs accordingly.

Habitability is an essential concept for shelter planning in terms of supporting victims’ right to life with dignity and recovering from what they suffered. The study aimed to identify problems and needs in shelter spaces and suggest measures to improve shelter space plans by conducting a case study in South Korea. The temporary disaster shelter in Pohang built right after the earthquake (2018) was selected as a case subject. From the literature review, a framework consisting of four concepts of habitability (safety, health, sociality, comfort) and four shelter zones (entry, residential, service, special needs zone) was developed for the in-depth interviews and analysis. The field study and in-depth interviews with victims, staff, and volunteers were conducted to collect problems and needs regarding shelter space planning. The results showed that the entry zone needed improvements in ‘protection’, ‘prevention’, ‘sanitation’, ‘accessibility’, ‘area’, and ‘privacy’. The residential zone lacked ‘area’, ‘privacy’, and ‘indoor environmental quality’. The service zone problems were mainly seen in the categories of ‘area’ and ‘privacy’. The special needs zone was less habitable in the categories of ‘protection’ and ‘area’. To appropriately respond to victims’ urgent needs, the temporary shelter planning should secure enough space beyond the legal minimum standards, provide sanitation and indoor environmental quality management, and separate spaces by function and user type.

Abstract. The purpose of this research is to analyze the accountability of the implementation of deconcentration authority in Badan Lingkungan Hidup Provinsi Sulawesi Utara. This is a qualitative research with case study approach. Data were obtained by in-depth interviews, observation and documentation study. Key informants were determined by purposive sampling based on the criterias in order to get the exact and accurate information. Interviews were then transcribed into data transcription. They were analyzed, given code, and categorized into themes. Data were analysed by content analysis. The result of research show that the implementation of deconcentration authority in Badan Lingkungan Hidup Sulawesi Utara is conducted based on technical guidance for the implementation of environmental deconcentration authority that involve direction policy, planning, budgeting, implementation, reporting, monitoring and evaluation, performance assesment, guidance and supervision. However, the implementation of deconcentration is not yet accountable. It is because of the inefficient planning, ineffective maximization of the fundings source in prioritising regional needs optimally. The obstacles in implementing the programs successfully are: (1) rationalization of budget from central government to local government; (2) delay in deconcentration reporting to KPPN Manado; (3) inadequate availability of supporting facilities of deconcentration program implementation; (4) ineffective guidance and supervision. These obstacles have caused the determined target can not be accomplished in accordance to the achievement of realization. Keywords : Accountability, Authority Delegation, deconcentrated fund, Work ProgramAbstrak.

PurposeCorporate communications is often less successful when it is competing for influence with neighboring functions such as marketing or sales within organizations. This article addresses the internal positioning of communication departments by developing a conceptual framework which helps to understand, analyze and optimize their standing in organizations.Design/methodology/approachThe research is based on a literature review across several disciplines (e.g. organizational communication, strategic management) and supported by 26 qualitative in-depth interviews with board members, executives and communicators in a global industry company. By combining the theoretical and empirical insights, a framework for positioning communication departments within organizations was developed.FindingsThe framework depicts seven strategies (e.g. expectation and impression management, supporting ambassadors from other departments) and three spheres of influence (organizational integration, internal perceptions and social capital) to strengthen the position of corporate communications.Research limitations/implicationsThe conceptual framework has been supported by one case study so far, and future research may further develop and verify it by applying it to a larger number of companies in different industries.Practical implicationsPractitioners can use the framework as an analytical tool to reflect the current situation in their organization and identify opportunities for strengthening it.Originality/valueThis article introduces a novel view in the academic debate about the role and influence of corporate communications. It establishes a framework that helps to identify different drivers and strategies, and lays ground for future research.

Though international teachers have been present in U.S. schools for decades, their recruitment for urban schools as a response to the supposed teacher shortage is a relatively new phenomenon with little research to support it. This study examines international teachers’ recruitment and preparation for urban environments. Informed by classroom observations and in-depth interviews with teachers, administrators, and recruitment agency personnel, this collective case study finds that there are distinct benefits and challenges of recruitment and that recruitment procedures and lack of preparation for U.S. schools add to teachers’ challenges. Recommendations are included for future research, teacher education, and policy.
