The purposes of this study were to identify students’ conceptions of chemical bonds and to determine, after instruction, the changes these conceptions undergo. The dataset for this study arises from an administered questionnaire that includes answers to three open–ended questions from 76 6th grade students and 56 7th grade students. Analysis of the qualitative data obtained through the questionnaire indicates that the majority of students had difficulty comprehending the modelisation of chemical bonds and that levels of interpreting these concepts of chemical bonds was much lower than what is required at the end of these different grades. The study showed that students have similar conceptions of bonding affinity expressed though a language of kinship and convenience, as used in 17th century. Additionally, the students’ conceptions also reflect the 18th century’ macro level concept of affinity expressed through the notion that likes attract. This article aims to investigate the conceptions and perceptions of students from the 8th and 9th year of the middle school regarding the four scopes of basic sanitation articulated with the themes addressed in the curriculum each year. Forty-nine students from a state school in Estância Velha/RS participated with activities involving questionnaires application, photovoice and image evaluations from the perspective of Mixed Method Research. Qualitative data were from observations present in the logbook and answers to the open-ended questions of the questionnaires. The quantitative are the scores attributed by the students analysed with the tools of descriptive statistics and with the non-parametric test of Kruskal-Wallis. The results showed that the use of images and the attribution of scores articulated with qualitative data were fruitful to understand the perceptions and conceptions of the students. It was evidenced that sewage and water supply were the most frequently remembered elements regarding basic sanitation, followed by solid waste. However, drainage was not remembered as a component of basic sanitation, requiring the construction of integrative educational practices from the four scopes seeking to expand students' perceptions and conceptions about basic sanitation and its relevance in contemporaneity.

Science education has changed in recent decades with respect to key issues faced in this century. These issues such as renewable energy, waste management, air quality and biodiversity require dealing with transition towards a sustainable future. Thus, to contribute to the reconceptualization of science education in a developing country, the present study aimed to assess (1) Turkish middle school students' environmentally responsible behaviors, nature relatedness, and motive concerns and (2) the power of environmental motive concerns and nature relatedness in predicting the related behaviors. Measuring tools covering the Nature Relatedness Scale, the Environmental Motive Concerns, and Children's Responsible Environmental Behavior Scale were administered to middle school students in the northern part of Turkey. The results indicated that these students reflected an external nature-related worldview. Regarding their behaviors, it was revealed that the students frequently engaged in some actions linked to physical and economic contribution to the environmental quality. However, they did not demonstrate any actions on political commitment although they were very concerned about the environmental issues. Examining the predictors of their responsible environmental behaviors, a linear combination of these attributes significantly contributed to explaining such behaviors. This study provided practical tips for science and sustainability educators in that children could be provided with some opportunities to get in touch with nature and appreciate value of being in nature.

One of the goals of the Science Education Against Drug Abuse Partnership (SEADAP) is to increase student knowledge about drugs through the implementation of an inquiry-based curriculum. A science teacher who was a participant in the SEADAP program served as a facilitator for middle school students participating in an after-school program to assist them with designing their own experiment using planarians (flatworms) exposed to caffeine, sugar, and an energy drink. Results indicated that the average velocity of the planarians in 1 mM caffeine, 1 mM sucrose, and 0.1% Monster Energy drink increased in comparison to their behavior in spring water. The students also learned that substances such as energy drinks can be lethal to planarians.

The purpose of this study was to examine middle school students’ recollections of their participation in a significant number of Sport Education seasons over a period of five years. Thirty-one (18 boys and 13 girls) eighth-grade students (average age at data collection = 13 years) who had all participated in at least 17 Sport Education seasons served as the participants in this study. Autobiographical memory theory guided qualitative data collection, which included surveys, formal interviews, focus group interviews, and autobiographical critical reflections. Student responses were categorized into general events, which had a focus on evaluating, preparation, first season, integrity, competition, and gamesmanship. Descriptive event-specific memories included authenticity and gameplay as most memorable aspects of students’ experiences within multiple Sport Education seasons. The findings suggested that participating in multiple Sport Education seasons leads to better developed student roles and a stronger sense of fair play. More importantly, adherence to the central features of Sport Education and meaningful participation in several iterations of quality Sport Education seasons may be required for students to move closer to achieving the lofty goals of the model for students to become competent, literate, and enthusiastic sportspeople.

<p style='text-indent:20px;'>More research is needed involving middle school students' engagement in the statistical problem-solving process, particularly the beginning process steps: formulate a question and make a plan to collect data/consider the data. Further, the increased availability of large-scale electronically accessible data sets is an untapped area of study. This interpretive study examined middle school students' understanding of statistical concepts involved in making a plan to collect data to answer a statistical question within a social issue context using data available on the internet. Student artifacts, researcher notes, and audio and video recordings from nine groups of 20 seventh-grade students in two gifted education pull-out classes at a suburban middle school were used to answer the study research questions. Data were analyzed using a priori codes from previously developed frameworks and by using an inductive approach to find themes.</p><p style='text-indent:20px;'>Three themes that emerged from data related to confirmation bias. Some middle school students held preconceptions about the social issues they chose to study that biased their statistical questions. This in turn influenced the sources of data students used to answer their questions. Confirmation bias is a serious issue that is exacerbated due to endless sources of data electronically available. We argue that this type of bias should be addressed early in students' educational experiences. Based on the findings from this study, we offer recommendations for future research and implications for statistics and data science education.</p>

This study deals with the improvement of the vocational school students’ achievement through Project-Based Learning Method. This research was conducted by applying classroom action research in two cycles. The subject of this research was a class in the second year student of SMK TKJ HARAPAN STABAT. There were 35 students that participated in this research. The quantitative and the qualitative data were gathered by administering oral test and diary notes. The result of the quantitative data indicated that the score of the students improved from cycle I to cycle II with a pre-test mean of 59,5, the test of cycle I was 70, and the test of cycle II was 83,8. The result of the qualitative data indicated that the use of Project-Based Learning Method helped to improve the students’ achievement in speaking English.   Key Words: Speaking, Project-Based Learning, Oral Test, Diary Notes
