An experiment was conducted to find out the influence of three irrigation levels (no irrigation, one irrigation and two irrigation) on four mustard varieties (Tori- 7, BARI Sharisha-6, BARI Sharisha-9 and BARI Sharisha-8). The non-irrigated plots had highest aphid population (34.96/plant) and lowest (11.16 aphids/plant) in two irrigation. The variety BARI Sharisha-8 showed lowest (5.34 aphids/plant) aphid infestation and its yield was highest (2.05 ton/ha). Interaction effects indicated that the crop escaped from the aphid incidence in the variety BARI Sharisha-8 irrigated 2 times and produced highest yield (2.37 ton/ha). The differences in the aphid population at three irrigation levels affected the yield contributing characters and it was negatively correlated (correlation coefficient value ‘r’ ranged from -0.91 to 1.0).Bangladesh J. Mustard (Brassica juncea L.) production in India suffers from aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach), infestation considerably. Role of weather on the incidence and development of mustard aphids was assessed from experimental data from six north Indian locations. Aphid appearance and population build up was found to be regulated by temperature and time to attain peak population was relatively short in warm humid climates than in cool climates. Aphids appeared generally when the accumulated thermal time ranged between 810-847 and diurnal temperature range had a key role on the pest build up. Functional relations developed from the present study between aphid incidence and peak population using previous weeks weather and pest data for majority of the locations could be used for taking of any prophylactic/control measures. Projections on aphid population in future climates using generated weather variables indicated that warming may not increase aphid population at all locations uniformly. AbstractThe corn leaf aphid, Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is an important pest of corn, but no corn genotypes resistant to R. maidis are commercially available. Although the ability of silicon to induce plant resistance against some insects is known, the effect of silicon on R. maidis and in corn hybrids with different levels of constitutive resistance is still unknown. This study sought to determine the constitutive resistance of corn hybrids to R. maidis and silicon resistance induction in hybrids with different degrees of constitutive resistance. Field experiments with natural infestations of aphids were conducted in three locations in Brazil (Patos de Minas, Araguari, and Tupaciguara). Greenhouse trials were also used to evaluate the effect of varietal resistance on aphid population growth and identify resistant and susceptible genotypes. Aphid resistance induced by silicon was determined with resistant and susceptible corn hybrids. In the field, the corn hybrids BM8850, AS1625PRO, and DKB310PRO had the greatest proportion of plants infested by R. maidis in all three localities. The hybrids P30F53H, STATUS VIP, BM9288, DAS2B587HX, DKB175PRO, AS1633PRO, and DKB390PRO2 were the least infested in Patos de Minas and Araguari, and P30F53H was the least infested in Tupaciguara. When antibiosis effects were evaluated by aphid population growth, the hybrids AG7088PRO3 and DKB310PRO2 were susceptible, while P30F53YH was resistant. When natural aphid infestation was evaluated, wherein the effects of antibiosis and non-preference could not be discriminated, soil applications of silicon-induced resistance to R. maidis in both susceptible and constitutively resistant corn hybrids.

Context: Lipaphis erysimi have different type of preference to settle on different varieties of mustard. Pest preferential movement is important for ecofriendly pest control.Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the L. erysimi resistance varieties of mustard to get more yields by lower cost and avoid most aphid infesting varieties for higher costMaterials and Methods: Two criteria were used to determine the varietal preference of L. erysimi, viz. (i) dispersal of aphids by cutting the base of host plants and enforce to settle on different varieties of three species of Brassica under free choice conditions, and (ii) suitability of those varieties based on the aphid infestation in the field crop condition at same season. Results: The preferential movement of L. erysimi on ten varieties of Brassica showed significant differences (P<0.01). The variety, Bari sharisa-6 showed highest (90.00 ± 7.21) aphid settlement followed by the variety, Rai-5 (89.00 ± 5.69). The variety, Bari sharisa-10 showed lowest (10.00 ± 0.58) aphid settlement followed by the variety, Bari sharisa-11 (19.00 ± 3.61). Naturally infested aphid population on first sowing date was recorded highest (2.1 ± 0.79) on the variety Bari Sarisha-8, followed by Bari Sarisha-6 (1.93 ± 0.88). The lowest (0.19 ± 0.09) number of aphids recorded on Bari Sarisha-12. In second sowing date, Bari Sarisha-7 showed highest (19.5 ± 6.51) aphid population, followed by Bari Sarisha-8 (15.42 ± 5.72). The lowest (1.2 ± 0.38) aphid population found on the variety, Bari Sarisha-11. In third sowing date, highest (14.69 ± 5.69) number of aphids was recorded on the variety, Bari Sarisha-6, followed by the variety, Sonali-75 (14.48±4.74). Lowest number (6.06 ± 2.30) of aphids was found on the variety, Bari Sarisha-12. In the fourth sowing date, highest (15.54 ± 5.72) aphid population recorded on the variety, Bari Sarisha-8, followed by Bari Sarisha-7 (14.39 ± 5.70); and the lowest (4.41 ± 1.75) number of aphids recorded on the variety, Bari Sarisha-9. Mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi Kalt., is the key insect pest of crop Brassicas causing significant reduction in crop yield. In the present study, widely grown Brassica cultivars RLC-1 (Brassica juncea) and GSC-6 (Brassica napus) were treated with elicitors salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) at 0.5mM and 1mM concentration via foliar spray (given at 40 and 60 days after planting (DAP). Their effect was evaluated in terms of total soluble protein content and activities of defense proteins (peroxidase, protease inhibitor, polyphenol oxidase, amylase inhibitor and lectins) in relation to aphid infestation in leaf tissue. SA and JA application caused significant increase in activities of defense proteins as well as total soluble proteins. JA at 1mM concentration was most effective in both Brassica cultivars. The 2nd foliar spray gave a booster response. The aphid population/plant reduced significantly in both the cultivars with JA as well as SA. POD and PPO registered negative correlation with aphid population count. SA and JA foliar applications seemed effective against mustard aphid through positive modulation in activities of defense proteins.

Twenty lentil (Lens culinaris Medik) genotypes received from Grain Legumes Research Program, Khajura, Banke were screened for relative tolerance against aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch.) at the research field of National Maize Research Program, Rampur, Chitwan during winter seasons of two consecutive years 2016 and 2017. The design of the experiment was Randomized Complete Block having three replications. The unit plot size was 4m × 1 m with 25cm row to row spacing and continue plant to plant spacing was maintained and net harvested plot was 4 square meters. The recommended dose of fertilizer was 20:40:20 N:P2O5:K2O kg/ha and seed rate 30 kg/ha. Insect data were collected based on aphid population found at apical twigs (10 cm) per plant and scoring was done during flowering and pod formation stage. The grain yield was recorded. All screened genotypes differed significantly (p<0.05) on aphid population and grain yield.  Genotypes, ILL 9924, RL 83, ILL 10856, ILL 6458 and RL 67 were less susceptible with higher grain yield. These results have important implications for the development of aphid tolerant high yielding lentil variety in inner Tarai of Nepal.

Field studies were carried out to evaluate the efficacy of four new generation insecticides along with a botanical against mustard aphid (Lipaphis erysimi Kalt.) and their toxicity to coccinellid beetles and foraging honeybees during 2014-15 at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur, Bangladesh. Buprofezin 40 SC was found to be the most effective against aphid offering the lowest aphid population (1.56/ top10cm central twig) at 7 days after spraying (DAS) which was statistically identical to Diafenthiuron 500SC (1.85/ top10cm central twig). Among the treatments, Azadiractin 1EC appeared to be safest to coccinellid beetles and foraging honeybees because it recorded the highest number of beetle (7.50 /5 plants) and honeybee (9.64 /plot/5 min) population at 7 DAS, although honeybee population did not vary statistically with that of Buprofezin 40 SC and Lufenuron 5EC treated plots. Indoxacarb 145SC was found to be the most toxic against honeybees. However, the highest yield was obtained from Buprofezin 40 SC (1.57 t ha-1) treated plot although this was statistically identical to that Diafenthiuron 500SC (1.52 t ha-1) and Azadiractin 1EC (1.48 t ha-1) treated plots.Bangladesh J. O trabalho foi realizado na área experimental do Instituto Federal Goiano - Campus Urutaí-GO, cujas coordenadas geográficas são latitude 17º29’10” S, longitude 48º12’38” O e altitude de 697 m, no período de dezembro de 2017 a janeiro de 2018. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial (4x5), com parcela subdividida e quatro blocos, em que se utilizaram quatro níveis de irrigação (50, 75, 100 e 125%) da evaporação obtida diariamente, junto ao tanque Classe A e cinco doses de solução de hidrogel (0, 50, 100, 150 e 200 g). Analisou-se o custo de produção considerando os gastos efetivos realizados durante o ciclo produtivo além das variáveis produtividade (PRO) e a eficiência do uso da água (EUA). Os níveis de irrigação e doses de solução hidrorretentora utilizados influenciaram significativamente as variáveis PRO e EUA. The work was carried out in the experimental area of Goiás Federal Institute - Campus Urutaí-GO, geographic positions are latitude 17º29'10 "S, longitude 48º12'38" W and altitude 697 m, excluding the period from December 2017 to January 2018 (4x5), with subdivision of blocks using four levels of irrigation (50, 75, 100 and 125%) of the evaporation obtained daily, to tank Class A and five doses of hydrogel solution (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 g). The product was analyzed with the advantage of having achieved, during the productive cycle, productive changes and efficiency in water use (USA). Irrigation levels and doses of hydrocortisone solution may significantly influence PRO and US variables. The field experiments were conducted during Rabi 2013-14 and 2014-15 to screen out twelve varieties/entries of coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) for their relative susceptibility against aphids. None of the varieties/entries escaped the infestation of aphids. The build-up of aphid infestation started from second half of December and reached to its maximum in the first to third week of February in both years and then gradually declined. On the basis of grade index of mean aphid population, coriander varieties RCr- 684 (25.45 aphids/plant), RCr-446 (26.45 aphids/plant), ACr-1 (26.60 aphids/plant), RCr- 436 (41.75 aphids/plant), Gujarat Coriander-2 (42.45 aphids/plant), Pant Haritma (43.50 aphids/plant) and Gujarat Coriander-1 (43.70 aphids/plant) were categorized as least susceptible, Rajendra Swati and RCr-41 were moderately susceptible, whereas, Swati (CS-6), Sadhna (CS-4) and Sindhu (CS-2), 73.88, 70.60 and 69.50 aphids/plant, respectively were categorized as highly susceptible varieties of coriander against aphids under field conditions. Coriander variety RCr-684 received maximum yield (16.82 and 16.63 q/ha) for both the years followed by ACr-1 and RCr-446.

Background: different Solanaceae and Erythroxylaceae species produce tropane alkaloids. These alkaloids are the starting material in the production of different pharmaceuticals. The commercial demand for tropane alkaloids is covered by extracting them from cultivated plants. Datura stramonium is cultivated under greenhouse conditions as a source of tropane alkaloids. Here we investigate the effect of different levels of water availability in the soil on the production of tropane alkaloids by D. stramonium. Methods: We tested four irrigation levels on the accumulation of tropane alkaloids. We analyzed the profile of tropane alkaloids using an untargeted liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry method. Results: Using a combination of informatics and manual interpretation of mass spectra, we generated several structure hypotheses for signals in D. stramonium extracts that we assign as putative tropane alkaloids. Quantitation of mass spectrometry signals for our structure hypotheses across different anatomical organs allowed us to identify patterns of tropane alkaloids associated with different levels of irrigation. Furthermore, we identified anatomic partitioning of tropane alkaloid isomers with pharmaceutical applications. Conclusions: Our results show that soil water availability is an effective method for maximizing the production of specific tropane alkaloids for industrial applications.
