Bronchoscopy is performed for diagnostic or therapeutic purpose. Therapeutic bronchoscopy is mainly done for removal of foreign body from lower airway. Both the condition and procedure itself are associated with high mortality and morbidity. The aim of the study was to audit data regarding demography, types and location of foreign body, onset of symptom, admission duration, clinical and investigation findings along with duration of ventilation. A 19 years old married female presented with severe upper abdominal pain, repeated vomiting having history of swallowing a knife 7 months ago was admitted in Mordern Clinic and Diagnostic center, Joypurhat, Bangladesh. USG abdomen & X-ray (fig-1) abdomen were done when presence of a large foreign body (knife fig-3) in abdomen was made which latter on confirmed by Endoscopy of upper GIT (fig-2). Surprisingly the patient kept it in her abdomen for 7 months without any symptoms until the symptoms got worse and compelled her to seek medical help. The knife was removed by laparotomy, gastrotomy with uneventful recovery.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.14(2) 2015 p.210-212

Autoimmune diseases can have a widespread effect throughout the system and can cause high mortality and morbidity, depending on their involvement in the abdominal organs and systems. Most of the abdominal organs are damaged as a result of the direct or/ and indirect effects of autoimmune diseases. Therefore, abdominal surgeries should be performed to eliminate any complications related to these effects. There could be a significant relationship between abdominal surgery and autoimmune and autoimmune-related diseases. The aim of this study was to reveal the possible relationship between autoimmune and autoimmune-related diseases that cause significant mortality and morbidity. In this way, we further aimed at increasing the awareness of clinicians on this subject, along with providing them with the related publications on autoimmune and autoimmune-related diseases and abdominal surgery. Taking all these into consideration, autoimmune and autoimmune-related diseases can also influence the abdominal organs. The influence may be directly related to the involvement of the organ and system as a result of the autoimmune disease or indirectly related to the influence of the organs and systems. Such influence leading to complications may require urgent or elective abdominal surgery, which can further cause high mortality and morbidity. Therefore, it is significant for all clinicians, especially surgeons, to be aware of the relationship between autoimmune diseases and abdominal surgery. The early detection and treatment of the complications related to the abdominal involvement of autoimmune and autoimmune-related diseases could decrease mortality and morbidity.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) type 2 is the causative agent of acute hemorrhagic enteritis and high mortality in the affected dogs. Numerous studies have been done to understand the origin of the virus and to exhibit new variants and circulating strains. This report describes the detection and genomic characterization of CPV strains from indoor and outdoor dogs in Ankara, Turkey. Samples were sent to our laboratory due to clinical symptoms in puppies. We tested blood and swab samples to determine the presence of canine parvovirus (CPV) in three puppies and two adult dogs by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using VP2 (capsid protein) region primers of canine parvoviruses. Following that, to provide molecular characterization data Maximum Likelihood (ML) method was used for phylogenetic analyses. Constructed phylogenetic trees from the aligned nucleotide sequences revealed that our CPV strains demonstrated high genetic similarities, with 100% identity match on nucleotide alignments with each other and classified in CPV-2b genotypes.They have placed on a monophyletic clade as a sister branch with CPV VAC S quantum with 98.9% nucleotide homology. Our findings suggest that CPV-2b is actual and frequently seen variant in Turkey and shows high similarities with other CPV variants and a bit less with FPVs in Turkey and around the world. CPV causes high mortality and morbidity in dogs and to develop effective vaccines for protection of dogs in Turkey where there are few numbers of studies that have been done, field strains should be isolated and characterised.

Mammarenavirus genus groups viruses causing human haemorrhagic diseases, including the New World (NW) Junín virus (JUNV), and the Old World (OW) viruses Lassa (LASV), among others. The high mortality and morbidity rates associated to pathogenic mammarenaviruses, the absence of vaccines and the constant threat of new emerging species, make these viruses a public health concern in endemic areas. Autophagy is a widely-known intracellular metabolic pathway involved in maintaining the cellular homeostasis in response to several stress conditions.

<p>Foreign body sensation is a common complaint in the otorhinolaryngology emergency. Careful examination of the patient’s pharynx is mandatory, but sometimes the object is not visualized. In such scenario, it may be important to explore signs and symptoms indicating lower aerodigestive impaction. This work describes the case of a 73-year-old woman without relevant comorbidities attending to emergency care. She complained of a foreign body sensation on the right side of the throat after ingesting a meal, which motivated referral to otorhinolaryngology. Flexible transnasal nasopharyngoscopy was unremarkable and no foreign bodies were found. Auscultation was performed revealing low-pitch expiratory wheezing on her right hemithorax. The suspicion of bronchial foreign body was then raised, which was ultimately confirmed by imaging and bronchoscopy, showing an impacted pea on the right lower lobe bronchus. The stethoscope was hence determinant for detecting aspiration, by revealing consistent alterations. Its usage should be encouraged in similar scenarios, highlighting the role of this classic but sometimes forgotten tool. Importantly, higher neck/throat sensations should not exclude the possibility of a lower airway foreign body.</p>

BACKGROUND: Mucocele is a true cystic expansile mass filled with mucus resulting from obstruction of the sinus ostia. Prompt diagnosis and management are needed to avoid complications due to the intracranial or intra-orbital extension. OBJECTIVES: To audit data of mucocele of the paranasal sinuses in a tertiary center, to review the literature regarding the clinical features and the management of mucocele in the paranasal sinus and to emphasize the iatrogenic causes of mucocele after the development of Endoscopic Skull Base Surgeries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of etiology, clinical presentation, sinuses involved, operative technique, complication, recurrence were interpreted. RESULTS: The mean age of 16 patients managed is 49. Location:37% frontal,19% ethmoidal,19% frontoethmoidal,19% sphenoidal,6% maxillary. The iatrogenic cause was 44%. Symptoms included proptosis, external swelling, nasal block, and discharge, and vision loss. Complications were orbital abscess and skull base defect. 14 patients underwent endoscopic procedures-excision or marsupialization. One patient underwent craniotomy; one patient combined approach was performed. One patient had a recurrence. CONCLUSION: Mucocele of the paranasal sinuses is still a rare clinical scenario and it is imperative to note that any delay in diagnosis and management can lead to expansion and erosion of the bony wall of the sinuses and causing complications.

✓ The results of radical surgical excision of craniopharyngiomas in children operated on by Dr. Donald Matson beginning in 1950 are presented. The patients are analyzed in regard to survival and quality of survival. While 22 of 34 children so treated at the initial operation are presently alive and tumor-free, high mortality and morbidity followed in cases where reoperation was performed. Properly treated endocrinological deficits need not be a serious problem, but persistent hyperosmolality carried a grave prognosis. No predictive criteria are yet available to determine which tumors are amenable to radical surgical excision.

Liver injuries caused by high voltage electricity are rare and result in high mortality and morbidity. They are produced by the resistance to the passage of electrical current through the tissue, which creates heat that leads to coagulation necrosis and rupture of the cell membrane. We present a case of an electrical injury to the liver, diagnosed by ultrasound and CT in a 39-year-old man who presented with skin burns on his right hand and right hemiabdomen. Injuries occurred after the contact with 220 kV high voltage electricity.

Jackson and Jackson,1 in their landmark text, describe over 3000 foreign bodies of the air and food passages removed during their careers. Of these, 565 were vegetative and from the tracheobronchial tree. In their detailed list of foreign body types, sunflower seeds are not mentioned. A review of airway foreign bodies removed from children in the last 4 years at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, the Jacksons' main operative hospital for children, showed a remarkable change.
