This study compared the efficacy of two species of lichen located in Tunisia belonging to Cladonia rangiformis and Cladonia pocillum species. The antibacterial and antifungal potentials of methanol, acetone and quencher extracts of C. rangiformis and C. pocillum and the lysozyme activity of both methanol extracts were investigated. The results showed that the examined extracts had antimicrobial properties against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and anti-Candida properties and that they also limited the spore germination of Penicillium and Aspergillus. Further results showed that the largest diameter of the inhibition zone was obtained by the methanolic extract of C. pocillum with 31 mm and 27.5 mm against E. cloacae and E. coli, respectively. MIC values of bactericidal and fungicidal activities of both Cladonia extracts ranged from 0.25 mg/mL to 2 mg/mL. C. pocillum possess superior lysozyme activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. Furthermore, the methanol extract of both Cladonia showed a remarkable destructive effect on the morphology of fungal hyphae.

Leaves from several Passiflora species are largely employed in the Brazilian folk medicine as anxiolytic and sedative. In this work the anxiolytic, sedative-like properties and liquid chromatography analysis of methanolic extract of Passiflora actinia were evaluated. The methanol extract and all of its fractions presented significant sedative-like effect in elevated plus-maze and open field tests. Only the aqueous fraction of the methanol extract showed selective anxiolytic activity (30 mg/kg). Chromatographic analysis of the active fractions showed the presence of isovitexin and absence of the classical Passiflora beta-carboline alkaloids or flavonoids such as vitexin, rutin, swertisin, hesperidin and orientin. The tincture obtained from P. actinia leaves presented 0.27 mg/ml of isovitexin and absence of vitexin.

The methanol extract of leaf of Picrasma javanica as well as its n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and aqueous soluble partitionates were subjected to screening for antioxidant and thrombolytic activities and brine shrimp lethality. The antioxidant potential was evaluated by DPPH, Folin-Ciocalteau reagent and phosphomolybdenum total antioxidant assays using butylatedhydroxytolune (BHT) and ascorbic acid as standards. All fractions showed moderate to strong antioxidant activity, of which the chloroform and aqueous soluble fractions demonstrated the highest activity with the IC50 value of 14.59 ± 0.73 ?g/ml and 18.6 ± 0.15 ?g/ml, respectively. The total phenolic content of the chloroform and aqueous soluble fractions was 10.4 ± 0.64 and 5.15 ± 0.22 mg of GAE/g of extractive, respectively. Thus, a positive correlation was found between the total phenolic content and total antioxidant activity of P. javanica. The general toxicity was determined by brine shrimp lethality bioassay where the crude extract (LC50 1.04 ± 0.31 ?g/ml) and its n-hexane (LC50 1.28 ± 0.45?g/ml) soluble partitionate demonstrated the presence of considerable bioactive principles. Mild to moderate thrombolytic activity was discerned by the methanol extract of leaf of P. javanica and its different fractions. During assay for thrombolytic activity, the carbon tetrachloride soluble materials revealed 34.165±1.57 % of clot lysis while standard streptokinase and water, used as positive and negative controls, demonstrated 66.77% and 3.791% lysis of clot, respectively. The presence of phytochemical constituents and estimation of total phenolic contents in Iphiona aucheri (Bioss.) Anderb. stem and assessment of their cytotoxic, total antioxidant and anti-diabetic activity were investigated. All fractions were assessed for phytochemicals, cytotoxic activity, total phenolic contents, antioxidant and anti-diabetic characteristics. Saponins, glycosides, protein and amino acids, carbohydrates and flavonoids were found in aqueous fraction and methanolic extract while they were absent in n-hexane fraction except glycosides and protein. The crude methanolic extract (70.3 ± 1.9%) revealed highest brine shrimp mortalities. Except n-hexane fraction others indicated considerable antioxidant activities via DPPH, ABTS•+ and H2O2 assays. Crude methanolic extract expressed higher inhibition of α-amylase (60.71 ± 0.89%) than glucophage (54.92 ± 0.56%). Non significant correlation of total phenolic contents with percentage antioxidant and anti-diabetic activities of crude methanolic extract and its various fractions was observed in all cases.
