The bioactive properties of unconventional fruits have been of interest in recent research. The objective of this study was to evaluate the bioactivity of Terminalia catappa Linn fruit and seed through its antioxidant and antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microorganisms. The fruit and the seed were analyzed for the physical-chemical parameters of pH, aw, humidity, ashes, carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. After drying, pulp and almond flours were evaluated for bioactivity (total phenolics, tannins, anthocyanins and flavonoids and antioxidant-DPPH) and antimicrobial activity. The fruit had a higher carbohydrate content (15.65%), while the seed was characterized by high lipid content (48.52% ± 0.31) and protein (26.40% ± 0.10). The pulp flour showed significant amounts of tannins (1662.68 mg.100-1 g ± 1.27) and antimicrobial activity inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Clostridium perfringens and Listeria monocytogenes. The seed flour presented antioxidant activity (46.05 mg.100-1 g ± 0.23), but did not present inhibitory power against the tested bacterial strains. Terminalia catappa Linn fruit can be an alternative new ingredient with natural antioxidant action.

The amide derivatives of cinnamic acid were synthesized and their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities were investigated. The investigation of antimicrobial potentials of the compounds demonstrated a strong activity against 21 bacterial strains comprising Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Compounds2a,2b, and3bshowed strong antimicrobial activity against all microorganisms with the pMIC value ranging from 2.45 to 3.68. Compounds2a,3a, and3bdemonstrated strong antioxidant activity with % inhibition of the DPPH radical of 51% (±1.14), 41% (±1.01), and 50% (±1.23), respectively. These findings indicate that the amide derivatives of the cinnamic acid possess strong antibacterial and antioxidant activities.

Plant latex is well-established as a defensive exudate against natural herbivory. However, its bioactive properties and potential use as a clinical adjunct are not fully explored in the current literature. In this study, latex was procured from Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam. (jackfruit) and subsequently evaluated for its antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Aqueous extract (AE) and trifluoroethanol extract (TFE) of jackfruit latex were prepared using distilled water and trifluoroethanol. Both extracts were then characterized via thin-layer chromatography (TLC), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Antimicrobial activity and antioxidant activity were determined for the extracts. Antibacterial activity was exhibited by TFE against P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and Bacillus sp. The antioxidant activity of AE was significantly higher than TFE.

Background: This research was carried out in order to study the antimicrobial effectiveness of crude latex of two varieties of "Sangre de Drago": Croton lechleri Muller Arg. and Croton urucurana Baill and compare that effectiveness to the antimicrobial activity of the alcoholic extracts of its leaves and bark.  Methods: The activity of the alcoholic extracts and latex were evaluated against bacterial strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. The extraction of the alcoholic extracts (20% Tincture) of the leaves, bark and latex from the two Croton species was carried out by maceration using 70% alcohol as a menstruum, at room temperature, for 2 to 7 days, with shaking at least twice a day.  A 20% tincture was obtained, from which the physical and chemical parameters were determined as indicated by the Ecuadorian Quality Control Standard for natural medicinal products. Results: It was found that both the alcoholic extracts of the plant material and the crude latex indicate antimicrobial activity for S. epidermidis, moderate antimicrobial activity for B. subtilis and no antimicrobial activity for E. coli. The moderate antimicrobial activity against B. subtilis, at doses of 125 p.p.m., is in line with the findings of previous studies by other authors.  Conclusions: he antimicrobial activity of the latex of the two species against S. epidermidis is not registered in literature and, the negative antimicrobial activity for E. coli does not agree with what has been reported by previous studies.

Quinoa is a very interesting food due to its nutritional and chemical composition, as well as its bioactive properties, such as antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.


Although the genus Cotoneaster Medik. includes mainly ornamental species, there are some data regarding its biological activity. The purpose of this study was to analyze the content of phenolic compounds, acetylcholinesterase inhibition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of methanolic extracts of leaf and bark of C. integerrimus Medik., C. tomentosus (Aiton) Lindl. and C. horizontalis Decne. The C. tomentosus leaf extract exhibited the highest content of total phenols (135.86 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (18.17 mgQE/g), and also the most potent antioxidant activity against nonbiogenic free radicals, while the highest inhibition of acetylcholinesterase had the leaf extract of C. horizontalis (IC50 0.34 mg/mL). All extracts showed a significant level of antibacterial and antifungal activity against tested microbial strains. The largest inhibition zones were observed against Candida albicans treated with C. integerrimus leaf extract (30.50±0.50 mm). Furthermore, C. integerrimus extract was the most effective in the majority of bacterial strains tested. The results indicated that methanolic extracts of the investigated Cotoneaster species have promising bioactive and therapeutic potentials

Environmental interventions and ecological adaptations harbor millions of valued substances and metabolites in plants which can be employed and commercialized for human benefits. Present study encompasses the untapped potential of pine needles of Indo-Himalayan region for the production of different metabolites and their pharmacological significance in terms of antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Total phenolic and flavonoid content from the needles of ten pine species was quantified using three different solvent systems. Results revealed that out of 10 different selected Pinus species, Pinus taeda showed highest concentration of total phenolics, soluble-F phenolics and flavonoids content (approx.147.02 mg/g, 141.08 mg/g and 21.91mg/g respectively) as compared to other species. On the other hand P. greggii showed highest Bound-W phenolic content (approx.3.62mg/g). Among all the selected plant species, the needles of P.echinata exhibited the highest and P.thunbergii had the lowest ratio of total flavonoids to total phenolics. Most of these compounds were found to have effective antioxidant activities as well as antimicrobial activity, as estimated by oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and disk diffusion test respectively.

The recent research was directed to explore the phytochemical, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of Hydrodictyon reticulatum L. The samples were then identified morphologically and anatomically. By using different solvents algal extracts were prepared. The phytochemical activity of algal samples were performed to determine the presence or absence of alkaloids, steroids, tannin, triterpenoids, saponin, terpenoids, quinine, coumarins, phlobatannins, phytosteroids and flavonoids. Two bacterial strains S. aureus and E. coli were used to determine the antibacterial activity of algal extracts. The greatest activity was appeared by the methanolic extract against the fungal strain S. aureus i.e. 12.5±0.088 mm, while the  aqueous extract showed the maximum anti-bacterial activity that was 12.2±0.058 mm beside E. coli. These findings were relatively equivalent to the results of standard Amkasin that was normally used as antibiotic in the market. The results of antifungal movement was indicated greatest having the solvent (CH3)2CO separate i.e. 1.8±0.058 mm against A. niger. While methanol extricate indicated 2.35±0.058 mm against the strain F. solani. DPPH rummaging activity, TAA and TPC were performed to determine the action of reticulatum. In the event of DPPH the most extreme IC50 recorded was from the chloroform extricate. While in TPC methanol extricate indicated most extreme esteem 67.14±0.54 mm and in TAA ethanol showed greatest esteem i.e. 0.88±0.01 µg/L. These results demonstrated that the Hydrodictyon reticulatum had phytochemical, cancer prevention agent and antimicrobial potential and suggested for pharmaceutical use.

The antimicrobial activity of 13 total extracts was evaluated, 10 soft extracts (B) and 3 blended extracts (E) prepared from dry and fresh leaves of Petiveria alliacea L. Various solvents were used for their preparation: hydroalcoholic solution at 30%, 80% and isopropyl alcohol. The antimicrobial effect of the extracts was tested by means of the method of Kirby-Bauer, using four bacterial strains from the ATCC collection (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and a leveduriform fungus (Candida albicans). The following quality control parameters were determined for most active extracts: physical, physical-chemical and chemical parameters. The results were: nine extracts showed antibacterial activity, being the most concentrated (B8 and E3), the ones with the highest activity in the presence of the bacteria tested; the effect of blended extracts (E1, E2 and E3) was greater in the presence of P. aeruginosa. Blended extracts are considered more potent and active than soft extracts. No antifungal activity was obtained for both types of extracts. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were determined for both extracts, with the following results: MIC-soft extracts (>100 mg/mL), blended extracts (>50 mg/mL); MBC-soft extracts (≥400 mg/mL), blended extracts (≥200 mg/mL) based on fresh leaves.

Methanolic extracts of Chuquiraga straminea Sandwith, subfamily Barnadesioideae (Asteraceae) showed the presence of quercetin-3- O-glucoside, quercetin-3- O-rutinoside, kaempferol, kaempferol-3- O-glucoside and kaempferol-3- O-rutinoside. Antioxidant and antimicrobial activity was determined. The total extracts showed antioxidant activity by DPPH and ABTS method (SC50 14.5 to 34.9 μg/mL). A significantly positive correlation was observed between the antioxidant activity and the total phenolics (R2>0.93). The extracts were active against ten methicillin resistant and sensitive Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from nosocomial infection (MIC values between 200 to 800 μg/mL). These preliminary studies are highly interesting as they open new ways for further applications in the treatment of infections by methicillin resistant S. aureus.

AbstractThe present study describes the total phenolic content, concentrations of flavonoids and in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of methanol extracts from Seseli pallasii Besser, S. libanotis (L.) Koch ssp. libanotis and S. libanotis (L.) Koch ssp. intermedium (Rupr.) P. W. Ball, growing wild in Serbia. The total phenolic content in the extracts was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and their amounts ranged between 84.04 to 87.52 mg GA (gallic acid)/g. The concentrations of flavonoids in the extracts varied from 4.75 to 19.37 mg Qu (quercetin)/g. Antioxidant activity was analyzed using DPPH reagent. Antioxidant activity ranged from 0.46 to 4.63 IC50 (mg/ml) and from 1.98 to 2.19 mg VitC (vitamin C)/g when tested with the DPPH and ABTS reagents, respectively, using BHA and VitC as controls. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was investigated using a micro-well dilution assay for the most common human gastrointestinal pathogenic bacterial strains: Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027, Salmonella enteritidis ATCC 13076, Bacillus cereus ATCC 10876, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC15313, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Candida albicans ATCC 10231. This finding suggests that Seseli species may be considered as a natural source of antioxidants and antimicrobial agents.
