SOFT SKILLS IN HIGHER EDUCATION: ENRICHING EMPLOYABILITY OF TECHNICAL STUDENTS

The present paper attempts to intensify capacity and inculcate employability among Technical Students of Jharkhand in respect of globalization. Demands of present business world or work place are higher, and learning attitude, critical thinking, decision making skills along with other employable skills seems crucial in its employees. The technical students must be trained during their technical course in accordance to the industry-demands; and this is a real challenge of the technical institutions in Jharkhand, especially for the private one. Triangular role of the ‘Institution-FacultyStudents’ needs proper execution to fulfill the dynamic objective of higher education that is ‘reaching of the unreached’ in knowledge, skills and values. Learning is a lifelong process and students need to learn from their day to day activities. This paper deals with the process which enables the technical students to develop a thought process. Students need to learn appropriate reasons and logics behind their every acceptance or rejections. In this respect, a constructive environment is required to facilitate students where they don’t hesitate to do mistakes and solely focus on ‘Learning’.

In today’s higher education, the development of competencies based on the needs of the labour market, the role of practical training and the application of student-centred teaching methods are becoming more and more important. A particularly important question in engineering education is which abilities and skills are important for an engineer in a rapidly changing, information-based society. Therefore, in addition to hard skills, the development of soft skills also plays an important role. Our research was aimed at mapping the competencies of engineering informatics students and determining development opportunities. The Hungarian version of the Big Five Questionnaire (BFQ) was used to examine the students’ personalities. The results of the research showed that the students’ soft skills must be developed – especially in the areas of openness, communication and cooperation. Students’ personality development can be facilitated by courses that focus on self-knowledge and self-esteem, as well as opportunities for cooperation, adaptation, building trust, empathy, and helpfulness. Cooperative methods, collaborative learning, the project method and problem-based learning can also play an important role in higher education.

Abstract This paper discusses the link between accountability and internal auditing, particularly analyzing the extent to which the latter contributes to improve the former, in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This study applied a questionnaire to the management boards of a sample of HEIs, to empirical analyze the relationship between internal auditing and accountability. The main focus was on internal auditing carried out by the offices or departments in those institutions. The paper contributes to understand how management boards perceive internal auditing to foster transparency and accountability in HEIs, allowing to corroborate that auditing, and particularly internal auditing, favors the institutions’ accountability. In effect, it promotes the principles underlying accountability practices. The information provided in the scope of internal audits is acknowledged as contributing to improve management effectiveness and helping in decision-making. HEIs wanting to create an internal auditing office or to enhance the role of an existing one, should develop this office’s activities so that it becomes an instrument to support accountability and good governance of the organization. The sample consisted of Portuguese public HEIs, universities and polytechnics. Despite a certain international convergence regarding this type of public sector organizations, and regarding their purposes and governance, certain contextual specificities might limit the generalization of the findings for other jurisdictions.

The retirement decision making process: the role of work and organizational context The retirement decision making process: the role of work and organizational context Gedrag & Organisatie, volume 24, November 2011, nr. 4, pp. 428-450.This article links organizational forces to individual decision making on retirement. We examine to what extent work characteristics and organizational context (organizational policies and workplace norms toward retirement) affect the (planned) retirement age of workers aged 50 and over. We use data from the NIDI Work and Retirement Panel. This is a longitudinal study among older workers of three private sector organizations and among civil servants in the Netherlands. We use information for those employees that participated in 2001 as well in 2007 (N = 1,611). The results indicate that job characteristics are associated with retirement decision making: older individuals with attractive jobs (in terms of challenge and growth) have a higher (planned) retirement age, the opposite holds for older workers with demanding jobs. Social forces in the work place are relevant as well. The results indicate that older workers in organizations with an ‘early exit culture’, where almost all co-workers take early retirement, show a low propensity to continue working. Perceived supervisor support for extending working life has the opposite effect. Workers that feel that their supervisor has a positive attitude towards working longer, have a higher (planned) retirement age.

The role of academic advising in higher education remains largely misunderstood by university stakeholders, faculty and staff, students, and academic advisors. Many hold the simplistic view that academic advising is merely transmitting information to students to ensure timely graduation, a perception that limits what advising can do for student learning, growth, and development. Interviews with NACADA leaders and document analysis reveals a grounded theory of the academic advising process: within the advising context, students connect with caring institutional representatives, make meaning of experiences, and engage in informed decision-making. Synthesizing these experiences helps students develop their academic identity. The theory can aid stakeholders outside of academic advising and give practicing advisors language to explain the valuable work they do with students.


The article analyzes the role of free choice disciplines in the formation of universal or functional competencies, which are also called soft skills. It has been proven that mastering soft skills ensures both personal success in life and professional implementation, as well as further career growth of a modern graduate of a higher educational institution. Based on the analysis of scientific sources, the main approaches to defining the essence and classification of soft skills in the works of both domestic and foreign scientists are determined and characterized. The publication analyzes and summarizes the ways of forming soft skills among students in the practice of higher educational institutions of Ukraine. Among them: the creation of a special educational environment, the restructuring of the educational process, which is dominated by such types of learning as project, problem-based, etc.; variety of forms and methods of teaching; extracurricular system, etc. It has been proven that a cycle of selective disciplines or author's courses plays an important role in ensuring the formation of soft skills. A significant place among them is occupied by the course "Pedagogy of Success", which in the 2020-2021 academic year was chosen by applicants for the first (bachelor's) level of higher education. The course is aimed at increasing the productivity of independent educational work and a positive attitude towards it among students of higher educational institutions, equipping them with strategies of self-esteem, the formation of a positive "I-concept"; effective distribution of time (time management); search, evaluation and information processing; active reading; improved memorization; submitting your own educational achievements; communication, ways to ensure personal work ability, etc.

This qualitative study explored advisers' perspectives on teaching leadership. This study identified the significant need for the role of leadership in scholastic journalism programs. Advisers illustrated soft skills provide many opportunities for students to grow into leaders. The leadership skills provide advisers opportunities to articulate their passion and genuine convictions with their students. This current study focused on editorial leadership practices in high school journalism news labs for a clearer understanding of how advisers utilize many leadership practices. The findings will benefit high school journalism teachers to develop leadership for effective production, encourage creativity, and foster decision making. Thus, leadership skills are important in journalism education.

In the COVID-19 era the real challenge for the Emergency Departments (ED) is to avoid the spread of the viral infection within the so called “clean area” of the emergency room and the hospital. Different protocols have been proposed and adopted in the EDs to quickly identify suspected COVID-19 patients and to correctly manage these patients, all based on clinical and epidemiological criteria. To the best of our knowledge, our pre-triage decisional making-process first integrates the pre-triage interview with pointof- care Lung Ultrasound (LUS) performed in the triage area. The aim of our study is to assess the sensitivity and specificity of our screening clinical and/or epidemiological criteria, and to investigate the role of LUS in the triage decision-making process during the “phase 2” of the COVID-19 Italian epidemic. Our study confirms the pivotal role of the triage in the decision-making process and the management of the entire ED, and it demonstrates that further studies are necessary to validate the role of LUS as tool to promptly identify COVID-19 patients, if combined with a correct pre-triage interview.

Big data has the variety of characteristics, such as real-time performance, timeliness short, and data mining analysis of large value generated. Application of big data in education can be reviewed in various aspects such as 1) providing students with appropriate teaching, 2) providing teaching support to teachers, and 3) providing information management for the administrations. This chapter can serve as a guide for the management of higher education institutions to recognize possible challenges in big data analytics and better prepare for them in future decision making.
