Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to study the electrical parameters of graphite-graphene systems with different mass concentrations of graphene. Graphene was synthesized using two methods of plasma arc discharge from aqueous and non-aqueous medium (water and liquid nitrogen) to determine the impact of graphite concentration, water, and heat treatment of graphene on electrical parameters (conductivity and electrostatic capacity) of the graphite-graphene mixture. The average va­lues ​​of active resistance and electrostatic capacity of these systems are obtained. The optimal ratio of components with high capacitance and conductivity, which was 1: 1. The influence of heat treatment adsorbed on the graphene surface of the water and mass fraction of graphite on the change of electrical parameters of the system is shown. Comparison of the values ​​of capacity and active resistance of the samples showed that the presence of water in graphene reduces the average values ​​of capacity relative to graphene without water by 10 times and symbolically increases the active resistance at a mass ratio of graphene to graphite 1: 3, and at a ratio of 1: 1 values ​​are proportional. Comparison of resistance, capacitance, and charge distribution calculations in a graphite-graphene mixture in the frequency range 10–2 ÷ 103 Hz established the effect of heat treatment on increasing the values ​​of capacitance and active resistance. Heat treatment at 2500C of graphene, synthesized from an aqueous medium, leads to an increase in the values ​​of capacitance and conductivity, which occurs due to a different distribution of charges on the surface. Analysis of charge distribution maps shows that water adsorbed on the surface of graphene in the presence of a signi­ficant amount of graphite can be a factor in interfering with the distribution of charge carriers and significantly reduce the conductivity and electrostatic capacity of the system.

The weight reduction concept is most effective to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases from vehicles, which also improves fuel efficiency. Amongst lightweight materials, magnesium alloys are attractive to the automotive sector as a structural material. Welding feasibility of magnesium alloys acts as an influential role in its usage for lightweight prospects. Friction stir welding (FSW) is an appropriate technique as compared to other welding techniques to join magnesium alloys. Field of friction stir welding is emerging in the current scenario. The friction stir welding technique has been selected to weld AZ91 magnesium alloys in the current research work. The microstructure and mechanical characteristics of the produced FSW butt joints have been investigated. Further, the influence of post welding heat treatment (at 260 °C for 1 h) on these properties has also been examined. Post welding heat treatment (PWHT) resulted in the improvement of the grain structure of weld zones which affected the mechanical performance of the joints. After heat treatment, the tensile strength and elongation of the joint increased by 12.6 % and 31.9 % respectively. It is proven that after PWHT, the microhardness of the stir zone reduced and a comparatively smoothened microhardness profile of the FSW joint obtained. No considerable variation in the location of the tensile fracture was witnessed after PWHT. The results show that the impact toughness of the weld joints further decreases after post welding heat treatment.

The aim of this work was to study the impact of the methodology of in vitro gastric digestion (i.e., in terms of motility exerted and presence of gastric emptying) and gel structure on the degree of intestinal proteolysis and lipolysis of emulsion gels stabilized by whey protein isolate. Emulsions were prepared at pH 4.0 and 7.0 using two homogenization pressures (500 and 1000 bar) and then the emulsions were gelled by heat treatment. These gels were characterized in terms of texture analysis, and then were subjected to one of the following gastric digestion methods: in vitro mechanical gastric system (IMGS) or in vitro gastric digestion in a stirred beaker (SBg). After gastric digestion, the samples were subjected to in vitro intestinal digestion in a stirred beaker (SBi). Hardness, cohesiveness, and chewiness were significantly higher in gels at pH 7.0. The degree of proteolysis was higher in samples digested by IMGS–SBi (7–21%) than SBg–SBi (3–5%), regardless of the gel’s pH. For SBg–SBi, the degree of proteolysis was not affected by pH, but when operating the IMGS, higher hydrolysis values were obtained for gels at pH 7.0 (15–21%) than pH 4.0 (7–13%). Additionally, the percentage of free fatty acids (%FFA) released was reduced by 47.9% in samples digested in the IMGS–SBi. For the methodology SBg–SBi, the %FFA was not affected by the pH, but in the IMGS, higher values were obtained for gels at pH 4.0 (28–30%) than pH 7.0 (15–19%). Our findings demonstrate the importance of choosing representative methods to simulate food digestion in the human gastrointestinal tract and their subsequent impact on nutrient bioaccessibility.

An increase in the consumption of poultry meat has been observed due to its availability, nutritional value, and delicate flavor. These characteristics make it possible to prepare, with the use of spices and other additives, many different dishes and products for increasingly demanding consumers. The sous-vide technique is increasingly being used to give new sensory attributes to dishes in gastronomy. The study aimed to assess the impact of the heat treatment method, i.e., the sous-vide method, as compared to traditional cooking, on the sensory quality of poultry meat, as well as the efficiency of the process with regard to technological quality. The cooking yield with the sous-vide method of processing poultry meat was higher than with the traditional method of cooking in water (88.5% vs. 71.0%, respectively). The meat was also found to be redder (a* = 254 vs. 074) and less yellow (b* = 1512 vs. 1649), as well as more tender. The sensory quality of chicken breast meat obtained by the sous-vide method was higher in terms of attributes such as color tone, tenderness, juiciness, and overall quality. At the same time, it was lower in terms of the odor of cooked meat and the flavor of cooked meat as compared to meat subjected to traditional cooking.

AbstractThis study elucidates the performance of cold-sprayed tungsten carbide-nickel coating against solid particle impingement erosion using alumina (corundum) particles. After the coating fabrication, part of the specimens followed two different annealing heat treatment cycles with peak temperatures of 600 °C and 800 °C. The coatings were examined in terms of microstructure in the as-sprayed (AS) and the two heat-treated conditions (HT1, HT2). Subsequently, the erosion tests were carried out using design of experiments with two control factors and two replicate measurements in each case. The effect of the heat treatment on the mass loss of the coatings was investigated at the three levels (AS, HT1, HT2), as well as the impact angle of the erodents (30°, 60°, 90°). Finally, the response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to analyze and optimize the results, building the mathematical models that relate the significant variables and their interactions to the output response (mass loss) for each coating condition. The obtained results demonstrated that erosion minimization was achieved when the coating was heat treated at 600 °C and the angle was 90°.

The analyzed topic refers to the wear resistance and friction coefficient changes resulting from heat treatment (HT) of a hot-dip zinc coating deposited on steel. The aim of research was to evaluate the coating behavior during dry friction after HT as a result of microstructure changes and increase the coating hardness. The HT parameters should be determined by taking into consideration, on the one hand, coating wear resistance and, on the other hand, its anticorrosion properties. A hot-dip zinc coating was deposited in industrial conditions (according EN ISO 10684) on disc-shaped samples and the chosen bolts. The achieved results were assessed on the basis of tribological tests (T11 pin-on-disc tester, Schatz®Analyse device, Sindelfingen, Germany), microscopic observations (with the use of optical and scanning microscopy), EDS (point and linear) analysis, and microhardness measurements. It is proved that properly applied HT of a hot-dip zinc coating results in changes in the coating’s microstructure, hardness, friction coefficient, and wear resistance.

The casting Fe3Al intermetallics were solidified in sodium silicate sand mould and permanent mould respectively to get different cooling rates. After heat treatment (1000°С/15 h homogenizing annealing + furnace cooling followed by 600°С/1 h tempering + oil quenching), the microstructure and properties of Fe3Al intermetallics were investigated. The results show that the heat-treated Fe3Al intermetallics at higher cooling rate has finer grained microstructure than lower cooling rate, and the lattice distortion increases due to the higher solid solubility of the elements Cr and B at higher cooling rate. The tensile strength and hardness of the Fe3Al intermetallics at higher cooling rate are slightly higher also. However, the impact power of intermetallics at higher cooling rate is 67.5% higher than that at lower cooling rate, and the impact fracture mode is also transformed from intercrystalline fracture at lower cooling rate to intercrystallin+transcrystalline mixed fracture at higher cooling rate.

Abstract Neutropenia is a common side effect of cytotoxic chemotherapy and radiation, increasing the risk of infection in these patients. Here we examined the impact of body temperature on neutrophil recovery in the blood and bone marrow after total body irradiation (TBI). Mice were exposed to either 3 or 6 Gy TBI followed by a mild heat treatment that temporarily raised core body temperature to approximately 39.5°C. Neutrophil recovery was then compared with control mice that received either TBI alone heat treatment alone. Mice that received both TBI and heat treatment exhibited a significant increase in the rate of neutrophil recovery in the blood and an increase in the number of marrow hematopoietic stem cells and neutrophil progenitors compared with that seen in mice that received either TBI or heat alone. The combination treatment also increased G-CSF concentrations in the serum, bone marrow, and intestinal tissue and IL-17, IL-1β, and IL-1α concentrations in the intestinal tissue after TBI. Neutralizing G-CSF or inhibiting IL-17 or IL-1 signaling significantly blocked the thermally mediated increase in neutrophil numbers. These findings suggest that a physiologically relevant increase in body temperature can accelerate recovery from neutropenia after TBI through a G-CSF–, IL-17–, and IL-1–dependent mechanism.

AbstractThe effect of aging heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 10Cr20Ni25Mo1.5NbN austenitic steel was investigated in this article. The microstructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy. Results show that the microstructure of 10Cr20Ni25Mo1.5NbN austenitic is composed of austenite. This steel was strengthened by precipitates of secondary phases that were mainly M23C6 carbides and NbCrN nitrides. As aging treatment time increased, the tensile strength first rose (0–3,000 h) and then fell (3,000–5,000 h) due to the decrease of high density of dislocations. The impact absorbed energy decreased sharply, causing the sulfides to precipitate at the grain boundary. Therefore, the content of sulfur should be strictly controlled in the steelmaking process.
