Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the risks associated with outsourcing production to emerging countries with lower labour costs, namely China, and study actions and plans used to reduce the influence of factors/drivers that induce these risks. Design/methodology/approach This research uses a multiple case-study methodology, involving seven Canadian manufacturing firms that have chosen an outsourcing strategy in China. It is based on a particular approach of classifying factors/drivers that may generate risks related to this strategy and on interviews with two managers per firm to reduce personal bias. Findings In each of the seven cases studied, outsourcing was chosen to take advantage of lower labour costs in China, but in reality, costs were higher than expected due to unforeseen factors inherent to the risks involved. This study reveals that risks generated by factors/drivers such as lack of experience, reduced control over foreign operations and cultural differences are of major concern for managers outsourcing part of their production to China. However, according to some executives that were interviewed, certain actions can be taken by firms to overcome the negative influence of these factors/drivers. Furthermore, some risks may have multiple causes or be induced by other risks. Research limitations/implications The sample of this study was composed of firms from different industrial sectors, and the authors were therefore unable to analyse sector-specific risks. As the industrial sector has an impact on the technical complexity of the products and their components, it would be appropriate to reconduct our research using samples drawn from similar sectors. Practical implications These findings can help guide the decisions of managers wishing to outsource some of their activities to China and other emerging countries. They will contribute to the success of outsourcing strategies to these countries, as they reveal the risks associated with these strategies and the ways to deal with factors/drivers that can induce them. For example, building long-term relationships with Chinese partners based on collaboration, trust and mutual benefit as well as conducting a rigorous prospecting phase and taking time to select the right subcontractor can have a major impact on reducing risks. Originality/value The main contribution of this work is the analysis of risks associated with outsourcing to China, based on a categorisation of factors/drivers that can generate these risks, and the study of how firms manage these factors/drivers and control their negative effects. The nature of the practices and actions used to manage important risks depends on the characteristics of the companies, their size, resources and the products they outsource.

The La Tansa bakery industry is a formal industrial sector that makes bread, some process activities are still repeated manually. This condition will cause the prevalence of MSD complaints because the worker's body position is bent. The purpose of this study was to assess the level of risk of injury using the Quick Exposure Check (QEC) questionnaire and to assess complaints about the impact of this awkward posture using the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire. This type of research was descriptively carried out at the Latansa Bread Factory, Gontor Ponorogo in May 2020 with a total of 9 respondents. The research results will be analyzed using the Excel program. Based on the results of research on the distribution of questionnaires conducted by researchers and the workers themselves, it shows that the level of risk of injury to 7 out of 9 workers is at the level of 72.8% - 82.7%, which means that research and changes must be carried out as soon as possible. The results of MSD's complaint assessment among workers showed that all were categorized as having moderate complaints. The advice given to the Latansa Bread Factory is to design a chair and table for workers so as to minimize the risk of injury and create effective, safe, comfortable and efficient working condition.

Background The guitar-playing community is the largest group at risk of developing playing related musculoskeletal disorders. A thorough investigation of the relationships between the various risk factors and players’ report on musculoskeletal pain using objective and accurate means of assessment has yet to be reported. Purpose (a) to explore the correlations between demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, playing habits, and personal habits of guitar player and their complaints of musculoskeletal pain, (b) explore the correlations between the upper body kinematics of guitar players during playing the guitar and their complaints of musculoskeletal pain, and (c) compare the upper body kinematics of guitar players during playing the guitar while sitting versus standing. Methods Twenty-five guitar players (27.5±4.6 years old) filled out questionnaires regarding their guitar-playing habits, and the Standardized Nordic Questionnaires for the analysis of musculoskeletal symptoms. Kinematics of their torso and upper limbs were tracked while they played a tune twice, once while sitting and once while standing. Results We found moderate correlations between the number of painful joints in the last year and factors, such as physical comfort while playing, years of playing, and position during playing. During standing, lower back pain severity correlated with the rotation range of the torso, while during sitting, it moderately correlated with the average radial-ulnar deviation of the right wrist. During sitting, we found higher anterior and right tilt of the torso, combined with greater abduction of the right shoulder, higher flexion in the left shoulder and higher radial deviation in the left wrist. Conclusion Our results point to several risk factors, related both to playing habits but also to playing posture, which should be considered by the guitar players in order to prevent playing-related musculoskeletal disorders.

Musculoskeletal disorders which are an injury or pain in the human musculoskeletal system can reduce productivity especially the warehouse workers at a tire industry.  This research aims to observe the prevalence and the factors which increase the musculoskeletal disorders among the warehouse workers at a tire industry.  Thirty warehouse workers of a tire warehouse participated in this study by filling out a Nordic Body Map questionnaire or skeletal muscle complaints instrument. The result of this study showed that the highest prevalence of the musculoskeletal disorders at the warehouse workers at a tire industry occurred at the lower back area. The factors which influence the risk of musculoskeletal disorders of the warehouse workers at the tire industry are age, weight, educational background, and the duration of working by using the lower back, knees, and ankles. To reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders, it is necessary to supervise the work posture and design a work environment which involves all members of the company.

The relief shown in Plate IA was among those transferred to the Terme Museum from the Villa Ludovisi, where, about 1460, Cassiano Dal Pozzo saw it immured in the wall of a small building to the right of the entrance. Its original provenience is unknown. In his catalogue of the Villa Ludovisi sculpture Schreiber describes it as representing ‘a knight with two at tendants. … On the left a youth walks forward to the 1. He wears a sleeved tunic girt at the waist, and shoes; and carries on his right shoulder a short stave which has been broken off where the relief border is damaged. He is represented almost en face, and turns his head backwards towards the knight. With his left hand he leads by the bridle a richly harnessed horse saddled with a panther-skin. On the horse rides a young (beardless ?) man in short-sleeved tunic and cloak, the latter falling over his left forearm. He is laureate, and holds the horse's rein in his left hand, while the right is raised to the level of his head. … There follows a bearded man wearing tunic and shoes. In his left hand he holds the end of an object slung over his left shoulder (probably a sack …), and in his right hand he lifts up a hemispherical helmet (the left cheek-piece broken off), in the act of placing it on the knight's head.’

Less supportive working methods may lead operators inconvenience while working. This discomfort can be caused by a non-ergonomic work environment. Bread baking process is done manually using human energy. This work is done repeatedly for a long time, thereby posing a risk of musculoskeletal disorders. This is at risk of causing pain in some parts of the worker's body. Ergonomic work facilities and equipment are essential to minimize risk at work. The result of NBM (Nordic Body Map) questionnaire indicate that the biggest complaint is on the right back of the worker's arm and shoulders. In baking process, the operator must bend almost 90 degrees. This posture can cause health problems, especially musculoskeletal.  Based on observations using the OCRA (Occuptional Repetitive Action) method, the OCRA index value for the right hand is 8.56 and for the left hand is 7.84, with the red area and the average category of risk. Therefore, a trolley is designed in this study as a tool to minimize musculoskeletal complaints, using workers anthropometric data.
