Mapping the State

This chapter outlines three parallel accounts of the state that Kropotkin developed in the 1870s and 1880s as an anarchist critic of Tsarism. The first was an explanatory account for West European audiences and it described the iniquities of the Tsarist regime, and the social, economic and political problems that Russian revolutionaries were attempting to address. The second was a general anarchist critique that probed ideas of class and slavery and set out the reasons why constitutional solutions being proposed by radicals in Russia and elsewhere would fail to bring about social transformation. The third was an examination of the dynamics of change that drew directly on Kropotkin's understanding of geography. Kropotkin applied this to distinguish between nations and states and to develop ideas of colonisation, monopoly and a politics of anti-statecraft. By looking at the dynamics of the state, Kropotkin also explored the relationship between the state and capitalism and the power relationships of the international system. This analysis led him to identify Germany as the central power in Europe.

This brief article explores two key questions that have emerged for the social economy in the COVID-19 context: 1) the nature of the relationship between social economy actors and the State, and 2) the possibility for social transformation going forward. This article engages with a dialogue entitled “Autonomous Community Action and Its Transformational Potential at a Territorial Level: An Ongoing Dialogue Between Research and Practice.” RÉSUMÉCe bref article explore deux questions clés pour l’économie sociale soulevées dans le contexte du COVID-19 : 1) la nature du rapport entre l’État et les acteurs de l’économie sociale, et 2) la possibilité de transformations sociales pour l’avenir. Cet article se fonde sur un dialogue intitulé « L’action communautaire autonome et son potentiel transformationnel dans les territoires : un dialogue en cours entre les milieux de la recherche et de la pratique. »

Christian missionaries found Vietnam a spiritual country, and many Vietnamese converted to Christianity. On the other hand, during history, the Christian religious identity has brought various tensions due to the issues of colonialism, nationalism, and communism. Most Vietnamese Christians lived in pure Christian villages (lang cong giao toan tong) or mixed villages with Christians accounting for about a half of the population (lang cong giao xoi do). They have played an important role in the social, economic and cultural life of these villages. This article presents the historical background of a mixed village called Phung Khoang, contrasting the Christian vs. non-Christian cultural-religious views, and then discussing both the collaboration and tension played out over various historical periods.

This article explores some questions arising from recent debates on patriarchy and capitalism. The focus is on the role of women in communist-led peasant movements in India and the implications of such struggles on the project of women’s emancipation. The first section lays out a framework for discussing the interface between class consciousness and the anti-patriarchal project, whereby patriarchy is located within the structural contradictions arising out of the contestations within the process of accumulation. The second section documents the historical context, focusing on the relationship between land reforms and social transformation in semi-feudal and early capitalist contexts, and analyzes the extent to which communist-led struggles are anti-patriarchal in character. The third section turns to the participation of women in the contemporary struggles of both agricultural workers and peasant movements and underlines the new emerging dialectics between women’s and peasant organizations under a neoliberal state and with deepening agrarian distress.

This article places the British material on religion and social policy in a comparative perspective. In order to do so, it introduces a recently completed project on welfare and religion in eight European societies, entitled ‘Welfare and Religion in a European Perspective’. Theoretically it draws on the work of two key thinkers: Gøsta Esping-Andersen and David Martin. The third section elaborates the argument: all West European societies are faced with the same dilemmas regarding the provision of welfare and all of them are considering alternatives to the state for the effective delivery of services. These alternatives include the churches.

Este artigo é uma tentativa de entender as relações sociais e de poder na construção de uma escola nos sertões do Rio Doce (Cuieté). Estudamos os processos de instituição do Estado na fronteira colonial, especialmente na gestão da força de trabalho dos povos indígenas. Problematizamos a construção de uma escola sobre os domínios indígenas, avaliando a configuração deste espaço, assim como os conflitos e identidades inerentes a este processo. O principal objetivo de nossos estudos é resgatar a historicidade dos povos conquistados em meio às representações e ações dos empreendimentos de conquista.Schools, catechesis and indigenous work in Minas Gerais (18th century). This article is an attempt to understand the social and power relationships in the construction of a school in the “sertões do Rio Doce” (Cuieté) ("hinterland of river Doce"). We studied the processes of institutionalization of the State in the colonial frontier, especially in the management of the indigenous workforce. We problematized the construction of a school in the indigenous domains, assessing the arrangement of this area, as well as conflicts and identities inherent to this process. The main purpose of this research is to retrieve the historicity of the colonized people amid the representations and actions of the ventures of conquest. The article contains an explanation of the topic to be dealt with by the author within the work on the project 'Applying Modern Philosophical-Political Paradigms on Processes of Social Transformation in Serbia/FRJ'' of the Institute of Philosophy and Social Theory. In the first part of the paper the basic conception of the work as well as theoretical and practical relevance of the proposed topic are presented. In the second part, author emphasis the weight of the 'two-level theory' of moral thinking, which was elaborated by Richard Mervyn Hare, utilitarian philosopher. In the third part, the plan and the content of the forthcoming work are outlined. Basic and selective bibliography which author will be rely on in the elaboration of the proposed topic is given at the end of this article.

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la formación inicial del profesorado de Educación Física, incorporando elementos de reflexión y propuestas para considerar tanto en los planes de estudio como a nivel de las materias que componen el mismo. Todo esto, desde el convencimiento de que las cuestiones más importantes en nuestro campo se decidirán en un marco político que prioriza las cuestiones económicas y sociales ante la investigación y las opiniones de los expertos. Se desarrollará de acuerdo a la siguiente estructura:(1) Justificaremos que los procesos de innovación y cambio están influenciados principalmente por el contexto social, económico y político (más que por los resultados obtenidos desde la investigación); (2) analizaremos la evolución de la formación docente, prestando especial atención a la «nueva formación del profesorado» (docentes informados, críticos y capaces de promover el cambio); (3) defenderemos la necesidad de concebir y realizar una formación del profesorado capaz de prepararlos para ser eficaces; (4) nos referiremos a los desafíos para una formación de calidad del profesorado de Educación Física, centrándose en aspectos tales como: ¿Qué papel deben jugar las características de las/los estudiantes que quieren acceder a los programas de formación inicial del profesorado de educación física (FIPEF) y como transformar las creencias de los futuros docentes? ¿Qué tipos de programas contribuyen a la formación de un profesional más cualificado? ¿Cómo definir e impartir la materia dentro de los programas de FIPEF?, y ¿Cuáles son las características de los FIPEF de calidad? y, (5) concluiremos haciendo algunas recomendaciones para la formación inicial del profesorado de educación física.Palabras clave. formación inicial del profesorado, profesorado de educación física, educación física, innovación educativa.Abstract. The aim of this paper is to analyse the Physical Education in Teacher Education (PETE) in introducing elements of reflection and proposals considering both the curriculum and the contents used in this curriculum. We will do this based on the conviction that the most important issues in our field will be decided on a policy framework that prioritizes social and economic issues grounded on research and expert opinions. This article has the following structure: (1) we will introduce the topics of the article emphasising that the processes of innovation and changes are mainly influenced by the social, economic and political context (rather than the results obtained from research); (2) we will analyse the evolution of teacher education, giving special attention to the «new teacher education» (informed, critical and able to promote change); (3) we will defend the need to conceive and perform a PETE able to prepare teachers to become effective teachers; (4) we will refer to the challenges for PETE, trying to answer the following relevant questions: What role should PETE candidates’ attributes play in the PETE curriculum and what is the relationship between effective PETE and student achievement in physical education? What programmatic structures or curricular frameworks are most promising for preparing effective teachers? How should we define and deliver subject matter within PETE? What pedagogical strategies within PETE promote effective teaching? And, (5) we will conclude making some recommendations to PETE.

This article aims to discuss the dismantling that the neoliberal proposals have been making in relation to social policies, which the State, in fulfillment of its duty, should provide for the wellbeing of the population, in a democratic way. It was sought to clarify that the public-private relationship is nothing more than a major strategy of capital to create and expand new market niches to overcome the cyclical crisis of capitalism, always presented with new clothes in the mutations that are processed, to reduce the effects of the inevitable in the social asphyxiation that eventually generated great revolutions recorded in its historical process. This article is of bibliographic character, where information was sought in doctrines, periodicals, specialized magazines, official websites and others. Finally, it was a brief diagnosis of the current situation of the Brazilian public education that, from the third way, has been incorporating new forms of action based on the logic of the market.

The article examines the relationship between the social policy of the state and the Institute of social work. Some foreign and domestic approaches to defi ning the essence of social work as a specifi c type of activity are presented. It is noted that at a specifi c historical stage, the prevailing directions of social work, models of social assistance and support are determined by the socio-economic situation in the country, the level of social development, and the socio-cultural context. It is emphasized that in the conditions of modern reality, there is a need to develop the Institute of social work and realize its potential.

This prologue provides an overview of the history of early and medieval West Africa. During this period, the rise of Islam, the relationship of women to political power, the growth and influence of the domestically enslaved, and the invention and evolution of empire were all unfolding. In contrast to notions of an early Africa timeless and unchanging in its social and cultural categories and conventions, here was a western Savannah and Sahel that from the third/ninth through the tenth/sixteenth centuries witnessed political innovation as well as the evolution of such mutually constitutive categories as race, slavery, ethnicity, caste, and gendered notions of power. By the period's end, these categories assume significations not unlike their more contemporary connotations. All of these transformations were engaged with the apparatus of the state and its progression from the city-state to the empire. The transition consistently featured minimalist notions of governance replicated by successive dynasties, providing a continuity of structure as a mechanism of legitimization. Replication had its limits, however, and would ultimately prove inadequate in addressing unforeseen challenges.
