Аннотация. Статья посвящена истории жизни и деятельности Вячеслава Васильевича Богдановича (1878–1939/1940) – выдающегося православного публициста, политика, педагога, организатора в межвоенной Польше особого «патриаршего прихода» – верного патриарху Тихону. Избранный от мирян Литовской епархии в состав членов Священного Собора Православной Российской Церкви 1917–1918 гг., он стал подлинным его летописцем, составителем весьма значимых воспоминаний о нем, а также создателем графической галереи портретов членов Собора, включая самого себя. Как один из признанных лидеров белорусского национального движения во II Речи Посполитой В. В. Богданович, дважды избиравшийся в польский Сенат, многое сделал для защиты религиозных начал своего народа, а также всех православных в межвоенной Польше. Abstract. The article is devoted to the history of the life and work of Vyacheslav Vasilyevich Bogdanovich (1878-1939/1940) – an outstanding Orthodox publicist, politician, teacher, organizer in interwar Poland of a special «patriarchal parish» – loyal to Patriarch Tikhon. Elected from the laity of the Lithuanian diocese as a member of the Holy Council of the Orthodox Russian Church in 1917–1918, he became its original chronicler, the compiler of very significant memories of it, as well as the creator of a graphic gallery of portraits of members of the Council, including himself. As one of the recognized leaders of the Belarusian national movement in the second Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, V. V. Bogdanovich, who was twice elected to the Polish Senate, did much to protect the religious principles of his people, as well as all Orthodox Christians in interwar Poland.

The research aimed to reveal the history of the Raya Magazine and writing on political movements promoted by Islamic College students in Minangkabau. The research findings succeeded in revealing that Raya Magazine was present in the midst of strengthening colonial political pressure and the weakening of the national movement in the 1930s. The political movement was one of the themes of the national movement which was of special note and attention to the Islamic College Students Association. This theme was encountered in several articles during publication, mainly related to the weakening of non-cooperative parties in carrying out movements. The social situation that helped shape the theme of the political movement was the impact caused by the application of vergaderverbood in 1933 and arrested a number of non-cooperative parties leaders, especially Partindo, PNI Baru, and Permi.

The article deals with the particular kind of documentary sources for the history of the Belarusians in the Second Polish Republic – memoirs and diaries. The memoirs of Liudvika Vojcik, Janka Bagdanowič, Marjan Pieciukievič, and also the diaries of Maksim Tank and Piotr Siaŭruk are reviewed. The article concludes that personal writings provide unique information about the Belarusian national movement and the Belarusian press that can be applied in further historical research.

The article aims to study the personality of Taras Shevchenko in the reflections of the Cyril and Methodius Society Members. The investigators of the figures of the Cyril and Methodius Society, the epistolary and memoir legacy of the participants of the Ukrainian National Movement and their sympathizers are analyzed. As a result, it is argued that the Cyril and Methodius Society Members had fruitful intellectual contacts with T. Shevchenko, knew well and highly respected his work, realized the importance of the poet as a true Ukrainian populist, who made a significant contribution to the national-cultural revival of Ukrainian culture and the creation of a Ukrainian national consciousness It was proved that the activities of the Cyril and Methodius completely coincided with the meaning of Shevchenkoʼs poetic creativity, while the charismatic personality of Kobzar organically entered into the intellectual core of the Cyril and Methodius Society circle, and made a powerful moral and psychological influence on the conscious Ukrainian youth. Members of the Cyril and Methodius Society appreciated the uncompromisingness, courage, radicalism, and deep folk of Shevchenkoʼs poetry. Ukrainian patriotism, patriotism for the fate of the native people united T. Shevchenko with other figures of the society, despite some ideological differences. Progressive Ukrainian youth valued Kobzar for great poetry talent, artistic plastic, extraordinary melodic singing, penetrating mind, deep vital sensibility and, at the same time, unique comic, humor and satire. At the same time, communicating with ideological supporters gav T. Shevchenko a new creative inspiration. During this period the Ukrainian poet was in a state of creative exaltation. It is concluded that the reflections of the Members of the Cyril and Mefodius Society, especially M. I. Kostomarov, P. O. Kulish, G. L. Andruzsky, V. M. Bilozersky, M. I. Gulak, O. D. Tulub, and others, written as during the life of T. Shevchenko, and retrospectively, is an important historical source of life and activity of Kobzar, one of the most prominent representatives of the Ukrainian national elite. The empirical article is written on various documentary and narrative primary sources, for the first time actualizes the problem of historical memory in the Ukrainian national movement at the beginning of its cultural-political stage, contains the original generalizations and conclusions regarding T. Shevchenko as a Ukrainian nation рорulist and harbinger of the Ukrainian national idea in reflections of the Cyril and Methodius Society Members. The material of the article may have practical application in scientific studios on the history of the Ukrainian national movement and the educational process of higher education.

This chapter examines how protagonists of the Italian revolutions of 1848, including Giuseppe Montanelli and Carlo Cattaneo, engaged with American political institutions by looking at the cases of Lombardy, Tuscany, and Sicily. Before discussing the role played by the United States of America in Italian political thought of 1848, the chapter considers Italian experience of the revolutions of 1820–1821 and 1830–1831, both of which marked a watershed for the peninsula's national movement. It shows that Italian revolutionaries addressed the United States with very different emphasis, illustrating how references to the United States could serve very different ideological purposes. With respect to Tuscany's long history of engagement with the United States, there were far fewer references to American political institutions than for instance in Sicily, where the revolutionaries adopted a monarchical constitution. The chapter also analyzes Cattaneo's involvement in the Revolution in Lombardy and his understanding of American democracy.

“Di Ufgabn Fun Yidishizm”. Debates on Modern Yiddish Culture in Interwar PolandModern secular Yiddish culture reached the peak of its development during the 1920s and Poland was at that time one of the main centres where Yiddish literature, theatre, press, scholarship and schools flourished. This paper outlines the basic prin­ciples of Yiddishism, a Diaspora-based national movement that saw language and cul­ture as the cornerstones of a secular Jewish identity. It also presents some of the major theoretical questions faced by its supporters. What were the goals of Yiddishism? How Jewish should Yiddish culture be? Should it simply be a culture in Yiddish or should it incorporate elements of the Jewish religious heritage? If so, which ones? Who exactly were the so-called “Jewish masses” so often referred to as the target readership/audi­ence of the modern Yiddish cultural project? How could the challenges of geographi­cal dispersion be overcome? The arguments presented in this paper are based mostly on material found in the weekly Literarishe Bleter , where these and other questions surfaced time and again. Founded in Warsaw in 1924 by a group of Yiddish writers, it was the longest lasting and probably the most influential Yiddish literary journal of the its time. Throughout the interwar period it was a place where all supporters of the Yiddish language movement crossed intellectual paths, either as collaborators or adversaries. Today, Literarishe Bleter enable its modern reader to see the complexity of what it meant to strive towards cultural autonomy in interwar Poland. Czym jest jidyszyzm? Debaty o nowoczesnej kulturze jidysz w międzywojennej Polsce Jidyszyzm, czyli projekt budowania nowoczesnej tożsamości narodowej w oparciu o kulturę jidysz, rozkwitł najpełniej w latach dwudziestych XX wieku. W tym okresie Polska była jednym z najważniejszych, o ile nie najważniejszym ośrodkiem ruchu jidyszystycznego. To tutaj rozwijała się literatura jidysz, prasa, teatr, nauka oraz szkolnictwo w tym języku. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia podstawowe teoretyczne założenia jidyszyzmu oraz pytania, z którymi musieli zmierzyć się jego zwolennicy. Jak żydowska winna być kultura jidysz? Czy wystarczy, by była kulturą w jidysz, czy też powinna opierać się na elementach tradycji religijnej, a jeśli tak, to jakich? O kim myślano, pisząc o tzw. „masach żydowskich”, odbiorcach kultury jidysz? Czy mimo geograficznego rozproszenia mówców jidysz na pięciu kontynentach możliwe było stworzenie jednej spójnej, ponadpaństwowej kultury narodowej? Przedstawione w tym artykule rozważania międzywojennych jidyszystów pochodzą przede wszystkim z tygodnika "Literarisze Bleter", jidyszowego czasopisma literackiego założonego w Warszawie w 1924 roku przez grupę młodych pisarzy. Tygodnik ten był najdłużej wychodzącym jidyszowym czasopismem literackim w okresie międzywojennym, z czasem stał się też jednym z najbardziej opiniotwórczych periodyków. Na jego łamach spotykali się wszyscy pisarze, publicyści, działacze społeczni zaangażowani w rozwój języka oraz instytucji kultury jidysz – jedni w roli współpracowników, inni adwersarzy. Współczesnemu czytelnikowi i badaczowi polemiki z "Literarisze Bleter" odsłaniają teoretyczne i praktyczne problemy, z którymi musieli mierzyć się zwolennicy żydowskiej autonomii kulturalnej w międzywojennej Polsce.

The Palestinian national movement gestated in the early decades of the twentieth century, but it was born in the Great Revolt of 1936–39, a period of sustained Arab protest against British policy in Palestine. In this book, Matthew Kraig Kelly makes the novel case that the key to understanding the rebellion lies in the "crimino-national" domain—a hitherto neglected area of overlap between criminological and nationalist discourses, and the primary terrain upon which the war of 1936–39 was fought. As Kelly elaborates, apart from national autonomy, the Palestinian rebels’ primary objective was to repudiate the British framing of their national movement as a criminal enterprise. The rebels therefore appropriated the institutions and even the aesthetics that betokened London’s legal title to Palestine, donning rank-specific uniforms and erecting their own postal, prison, and justice systems. In thus establishing the rudiments of a state, Palestinians shifted the criminal mantle onto their opponents: the British and the Zionists. Crime, in this sense, was the central preoccupation of the Palestinian national project, as it likely was of other such projects on the fringe of empire. Kelly's analysis amounts to a new history of the rebellion, and it offers important lessons for studies of interwar nationalism and insurgency more broadly.

This chapter examines Arab Anglophone memoirs by focusing on Edward Said’s Out of Place: A Memoir (1999) and Najla Said’s Looking for Palestine: Growing Up Confused in an Arab-American Family (2013). Out of Place traces Edward Said’s cultural and literary journey from Palestine, Lebanon, and Egypt to his education in the US. Edward Said’s self-representation rests on the dichotomy of his solitude during his formation within a history of dispossession and his career. The chapter rethinks Out of Place through the burgeoning of the Palestinian national movement and Said’s lifework. The chapter also compares Edward Said’s youth in the Arab world and Najla Said’s Arab-American background, Said’s journey to the US and his daughter’s return to her roots, to arrive at a rethinking of the genre that migrates across languages and cultures.

Throughout the 20th century, the rise of the Zionist national movement paralleled the strengthening of the Palestinian national movement. The struggle of the Israelis and the Palestinians over Palestine also manifested itself in the history of surveying and mapping, and their respective rights to do so. After the Hagannah looted the Survey of Palestine, the Palestinians were left with few cartographic resources. The lack of maps of their own weakened their negotiating position during peace negotiations with Israel. Yet, it was not until the 1993 Oslo Accords that Palestinians had a mandate to develop the territory under their jurisdiction. Their attempt to establish the State of Palestine went hand in hand with their effort to survey and map their territory. Consequently, in an effort to produce maps of their own, various governmental and non-governmental organizations produced maps for both building the nation and establishing a state. Logo maps of historical Palestine served to enhance national belonging; and cartographic reconstruction of pre-1948 Palestine retraced an Arab toponomy of the land. Concurrently, maps for building the State of Palestine delineated the territory in line with international law, strengthening Palestinians’ case for territorial sovereignty. Such maps are also vital for governance, land allocation, and development. The lack of territorial sovereignty, restricted access to aerial photos at a suitable scale (due to Israeli restrictions), largely donor-funded mapping projects as well as the lack of a national mapping agency, however, encumber Palestinian mapping efforts to establish a state, that could ascertain the rights of otherwise stateless people.
