Compared with traditional alloys with one principal component up to 40–90%, multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) were born in the complicated intermingling of traditional and non-traditional physical metallurgy, and brings us a great amount of excellent performances. Here, we would briefly summarize the potential applications in some key areas, which is helpful for latecomers to quickly and comprehensively understand this new alloy system. Especially, the applications of MPEAs in aerospace, industrial equipment, national defense, energy, navigation and so on are discussed roughly. Subsequently, several emerging areas have also been compared. Finally, some suggestions are given for the future development trend.

AbstractWith the explosive growth of the world’s population and the rapid increase in industrial water consumption, the world’s water supply has fallen into crisis. The shortage of fresh water resources has become a global problem, especially in arid regions. In nature, many organisms can collect water from foggy water under harsh conditions, which provides us with inspiration for the development of new functional fog harvesting materials. A large number of bionic special wettable synthetic surfaces are synthesized for water mist collection. In this review, we introduce some water collection phenomena in nature, outline the basic theories of biological water harvesting, and summarize six mechanisms of biological water collection: increased surface wettability, increased water transmission area, long-distance water delivery, water accumulation and storage, condensation promotion, and gravity-driven. Then, the water collection mechanisms of three typical organisms and their synthesis are discussed. And their function, water collection efficiency, new developments in their biomimetic materials are narrated, which are cactus, spider and desert beetles. The study of multiple bionics was inspired by the discovery of Nepenthes’ moist and smooth peristome. The excellent characteristics of a variety of biological water collection structures, combined with each other, are far superior to other single synthetic surfaces. Furthermore, the main problems in the preparation and application of biomimetic fog harvesting materials and the future development trend of materials fog harvesting are prospected.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to put forward a multi-stage information aggregation method based on grey inspiriting control lines to evaluate the objects dynamically and comprehensively. Design/methodology/approach – According to the evaluation value of the objects, the positive and negative incentive lines were set up and the predicted values were solved based on the grey GM(1, 1) model, so the value with expected information could be evaluated. In the evaluation, the part above the positive incentive line should be “rewarded” and that below the negative incentive line should be “punished” appropriately. Thereby the double incentive effects of “the current development situation and future development trend” to objects could be implemented on the basis of control. Findings – This method can primarily describe the decision maker's expectancy of the development of evaluation objects and make the evaluation results have better practical application value. Research limitations/implications – Many comprehensive evaluations were always based on the past information. However, the future development trend of the evaluated object is also very important. This study can be used in the evaluation for future application and development. Originality/value – The paper succeeds in providing not only a method of multi-phase information aggregation with expectancy information, but also a simple and convenient method solving nonlinear inspiring lines objectively.

This paper aims to explore the operating efficiency and the benchmark-learning roadmap of the military retail stores for Taiwan's General Welfare Service Ministry (GWSM). This study also presents an extension to the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method, by incorporating the traditional DEA, stratification DEA, attractiveness measure, and progress measure for assessing the performance of 31 retail stores of GWSM. The assessment can assist the Ministry of National Defense to improve the operational management of GWSM and to help the military retail stores on better delivering and efficient service to soldiers, veterans, and their dependents. The potential applications and strengths of DEA in assessing the military retail stores are highlighted.
