Based on interpersonal acceptance–rejection theory, family systems theory, and psychological inflexibility theory, this study aimed to examine the mediating roles of a protective factor (self-esteem) and a risk factor (psychological inflexibility) on the influence of parenting style on adolescent mental health. A sample of Chinese adolescents (n = 916, 46% male, mean age = 14.44 years, SD = 1.84 years) completed the Short Egna Minnen Barndoms Uppfostran, the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the Depression Subscale of the Youth Self-Report. Results show that the self-esteem and psychological inflexibility play a chain mediating role in the relationship between parenting style and adolescent mental health. Specifically, parental emotional warmth had a positive effect on adolescent mental health through the chain mediating effects of self-esteem and psychological inflexibility. Parental rejection and parental over-protection had negative effects on adolescent mental health by lowering self-esteem but increasing psychological inflexibility. These results provide further guidance in the prevention of and intervention in adolescent mental health problems.

Abstract Aims The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) has been used in many epidemiological studies to assess adolescent mental health problems, but cross-country comparisons of the self-report SDQ are scarce and so far failed to find a good-fitting, common, invariant measurement model across countries. The present study aims to evaluate and establish a version of the self-report SDQ that allows for a valid cross-country comparison of adolescent self-reported mental health problems. Methods Using the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study, the measurement model and measurement invariance of the 20 items of the self-report SDQ measuring adolescent mental health problems were evaluated. Nationally representative samples of 11-, 13- and 15-year old adolescents (n = 33 233) from seven countries of different regions in Europe (Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovenia) were used. Results In order to establish a good-fitting and common measurement model, the five reverse worded items of the self-report SDQ had to be removed. Using this revised version of the self-report SDQ, the SDQ-R, partial measurement invariance was established, indicating that latent factor means assessing conduct problems, emotional symptoms, peer relationships problems and hyperactivity-inattention problems could be validly compared across the countries in this study. Results showed that adolescents in Greece scored relatively low on almost all problem subscales, whereas adolescents in Poland scored relatively high on almost all problem subscales. Adolescents in the Netherlands reported the most divergent profile of mental health problems with the lowest levels of conduct problems, low levels of emotional symptoms and peer relationship problems, but the highest levels of hyperactivity-inattention problems. Conclusions With six factor loadings being non-invariant, partial measurement invariance was established, indicating that the 15-item SDQ-R could be used in our cross-country comparison of adolescent mental health problems. To move the field of internationally comparative research on adolescent mental health forward, studies should test the applicability of the SDQ-R in other countries in- and outside Europe, continue to develop the SDQ-R as a cross-country invariant measure of adolescent mental health, and examine explanations for the found country differences in adolescent mental health problems.

Introduction: Adolescence is a crucial phase in life, as this is the time when they are developing their identity, while at the same time forming relationships with others, including their family members. This study investigated adolescents’ mental health status in Malaysia and its associated factors including self -esteem and parenting style that are experienced by them. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 248 school-going adolescents aged 13 and 14 years in Selangor, Malaysia. The validated Malay version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was utilized to assess adolescents’ mental health status. In addition, the adolescents’ self-esteem was also assessed using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale Questionnaire while the Parental Bonding Instrument was used to assess their parent’s parenting style. Results: Almost 20% of the adolescents were found to have mental health problems such as emotional and conduct problems, hyperactivity disorder and peer problems. Using multivariate analysis, factors that were associated with mental health problems were family income (AOR=2.788, 95% CI=1.397, 5.563), adolescents’ self-esteem (AOR=0.799, 95% CI=0.668, 0.955) and their perception on parental control (AOR=1.175, 95% CI=1.020, 1.353). Conclusion: This study shows that one fifth of these adolescents had mental health problems. Low socio-economic factors, over controlling parents and poor self-esteem were associated with these problems. In conclusion, it is important to educate parents on effective parenting style, as improper parenting may cause psychological distress among adolescents. Improving families’ socioeconomic status and adolescents’ self-esteem can also enhance their mental health and well-being.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of severe physical punishment of children/adolescents in a low-income community, and to examine child mental health problems as a potential correlate. METHOD: This study is a Brazilian cross-sectional pilot study of the World Studies of Abuse in Family Environments. A probabilistic sample of clusters including all eligible households (women aged 15-49 years, son/daughter < 18 years) was evaluated. One mother-child pair was randomly selected per household (n = 89; attrition = 11%). Outcome (severe physical punishment of children/adolescents by mother/father) was defined as shaking (if age < 2 years), kicking, choking, smothering, burning/scalding/branding, beating, or threatening with weapon. Three groups of potential correlates were examined: child/adolescent (age, gender, physical/mental health); mother (education, unemployment, physical/mental health, harsh physical punishment in childhood, marital violence); father (unemployment, drunkenness). Severe marital violence was defined as kicking, hitting, beating or use of /threat to use a weapon. The following standardized questionnaires were applied by trained interviewers: World Studies of Abuse in Family Environments Core Questionnaire, Child Behavior Checklist, Self-Report Questionnaire. RESULTS: Outcome prevalence was 10.1%. Final logistic regression models identified two correlates: maternal harsh physical punishment in childhood (total sample, OR = 5.3, p = 0.047), and child/adolescent mental health problems (sub-sample aged 4-17 years, n = 67, OR = 9.1, p = 0.017). CONCLUSIONS: Severe physical punishment of children/adolescents is frequent in the studied community. The victims have a higher probability of becoming future perpetrators. When intrafamilial violence occurs, child/adolescent mental health may be compromised.

AbstractThe ongoing war in Syria has led to the displacement of 12 million people since 2011, with minors representing 40% of all refugees. Syrian children living in refugee camps are at risk of developing a wide range of mental health problems, given their previous and ongoing exposure to episodes of violence, disruption of family ties, and discontinuous access to education. In this study, we drew on the salutogenic paradigm to investigate whether, and to what extent, high/low levels of resilience were associated with other indicators of mental health and post-traumatic response in Syrian children living in refugee camps. The sample was composed of 311 Syrian children living in Jordanian refugee camps as a consequence of the war in Syria. We administered quantitative self-report measures to assess participants’ exposure to trauma, individual levels of resilience, and mental health, performing discriminant analysis to examine the association between resilience and trauma/mental health. Syrian children living in Jordanian refugee camps reported intense exposure to traumatic events. The linear discriminant equation supported adoption of the function [Wilk’s Lambda (Λ = 0.827)]: lower levels of resilience were associated with trauma symptoms (re-experiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal) and emotional problems, while higher levels of resilience were associated with pro-social behaviours. The findings of the present study suggest that resilience acts as a protective factor buffering children from the consequences of trauma and challenging life conditions. We discuss the implications for interventions designed to promote the wellbeing and mental health of children living in refugee camps.

Objective: More than one in three people worldwide are exposed to some form of childhood adversity (CA). CA is strongly associated with an increased risk for the development of mental health problems. Resilience factors (RFs), such as self-esteem, are known to reduce such vulnerability to mental health problems. Here we examine besides direct RF effects, whether RFs predominantly alter the relationship (i.e. moderation) or disrupt the developmental chain (i.e. mediation) between CA and mental health problems.Methods: We studied 1130 adolescents. CA exposure and 10 RFs (3 inter-individual e.g. friendships; 7 intra-individual e.g. self-esteem) were assessed at age 14. Mental health problems were assessed at age 14 and 17, and were combined into a mental distress index. We estimated direct-effect, moderation and mediation models.Results: When taking the effects of all 10 RFs into account, five of the 10 RFs had a significantly negative direct effect in the overall sample. However, of those five, only brooding revealed a significant effect in both the group of adolescents with and without CA. Of the 10 RFs, friendship support, family cohesion and distress tolerance had a significantly negative relationship with age-17 distress in the group of adolescents with CA, and no effect in the group of adolescents without CA. Yet, none of the three RFs revealed a significant moderation effect (p = 0.07-0.09). Positive self-esteem, negative self-esteem and aggression functioned as significant mediators for the relationship between CA and mental distress.Conclusions: In situations in which CA is not known, brooding seems to be the most beneficial RF, as it reduced subsequent mental distress in both adolescents with and without CA. Regarding RFs in the aftermath of CA, our findings provide predominant support for mediation rather than for moderation effects. More specifically, targeting negative self-esteem, positive self-esteem, and aggression seems most fruitful, when the aim is to disrupt the chain between CA and adolescent mental health problems.

SummaryRates of developmental delay, autism and mental illness in deaf children are higher than in hearing children. Early language acquisition (signed or spoken) is a protective factor against mental disorder. Deaf children and their families are often given conflicting messages and advice about their upbringing and many are unable to access generic child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS). We describe the National Deaf CAMHS, a service that has been set up to answer the needs of this group of patients. It uses specialist intervention which incorporates some aspects of Deaf awareness to empower deaf children and reduce the burden of mental health problems that are likely to accompany them into and throughout their adulthood.

SummaryWork plays an important part in everyday life. For people experiencing mental health problems employment may both provide a source of income, improved self-esteem and stability, and influence the course and outcomes of the disorder. Yet in many countries the work-place consistently surfaces as the context where people with mental health problems feel stigmatised and discriminated the most. This paper will review the existing evidence of stigma and discrimination in the workplace, consider the consequences of workplace stigma on the lives of people experiencing mental health problems, and discuss implications for further action.

Remaja yang tidak mampu menghadapi tekanan akan membawanya pada ketidakstabilan emosional dan cenderung melakukan berbagai perilaku berbahaya hingga bunuh diri. Bunuh diri memiliki faktor protektif berupa harga diri tinggi karena dapat memberikan kualitas psikologis positif. Faktor protektif ide bunuh diri lainnya yaitu pola asuh yang seimbang antara dimensi penerimaan dan pengendalian atau disebut pola asuh otoritatif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan harga diri dan pola asuh orangtua dengan ide bunuh diri pada remaja SMA. Desain penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif korelatif dan pendekatan secara chross-sectional. Penelitian ini memiliki responden sejumlah 322 remaja di SMA yang dipilih dengan teknik proportional random sampling. Terdapat hubungan yang kuat dan arah negatifantara harga diri dengan ide bunuh diri dengan koefisien korelasi -0,876, yang berarti bahwa semakin rendah harga diri yang dimiliki remaja maka semakin tinggi ide bunuh diri. Terdapat hubungan dengan kekuatan sedangdan arah negatif antara pola asuh orangtua dengan ide bunuh diri dengan koefisien korelasi -0,365, artinya apabila pola asuh orangtua mengarah pada otoritatif maka ide bunuh diri akan semakin rendah, dan sebaliknya apabila pola asuh orangtua mengarah pada otoritarian maka ide bunuh diri akan semakin tinggi. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan intervensi keperawatan jiwa dalammengidentifikasi ide bunuh diri pada remaja, serta meningkatkan wawasan remaja dan guru terkait faktor protektif ide bunuh diri.   Kata kunci: faktor proteksi, harga diri,ide bunuh diri,dan pola asuh orangtua   SELF-SELF-PRICE AND PARENT'S PATTERN AS SELF-KILLING IDEAS PROTECTIVE FACTORS   ABSTRACT Teenagers who do not cope well under pressure will lead them to emotional instability and tend to perform a variety of malicious behavior or commit to suicide. Suicidial Ideation has protective factor such as high self esteem, because it can provide positive psychological qualities.Other protective factor is parenting style that contain balance between the dimensions of acceptance and control, also called authoritative. This study aims to determine the relationship of self-esteem and parenting Stylewith Suicidial Ideation in high school adolescents. This study used descriptive correlative and cross-sectional approach. This study has a number of 322 respondents, that are high school adolescents selected by proportional random sampling technique. There is strong relationshipwith negative directionbetween self-esteem with suicidal ideationand the correlation coefficient is -0,876, which means that the if adolescent’s self-esteem is lower so suicidal ideation will be higher. There is moderate relationshipwith negative direction between parenting style with suicidal ideation and the correlation coefficient is -0,365, which means that if parenting style is authoritative so suicidal ideation will be lower, and if parenting style is authoritarian so suicidal ideation will be higher.This study can be used to improve nursing intervention in identify suicidal ideation, and also to improve teenager’s and teacher’s knowledge about protective factors of suicidal ideation.   Keywords: parenting style, protective factor,self-esteem and suicidal ideation
