Introduction: The burden of anemia in pregnancy is of global health importance. Tanzania is no exception. Its effects vary from one region to another due to the differing causes. Overall, it is a significant cause of maternal mortality. This study sought to assess the prevalence and factors associated with anemia among pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic (ANC) in the Mkuranga district of the Pwani region of Tanzania.Methodology: This cross sectional study was conducted among 418 pregnant women aged 15–49 years attending the Mkuranga District Hospital and Kilimahewa Health Center. The outcome variable of interest was anemia in pregnancy defined as a hemoglobin concentration of 11 g/dl or less. Data was collected using face-to-face interviews with a standardized pretested questionnaire, and through blood samples collected for hemoglobin testing. Descriptive analysis was used to determine the prevalence of anemia while multiple logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with anemia in pregnancy.Results: Anemia was prevalent among 83.5% of pregnant women attending the two major ANCs in Mkuranga district. Categorically, the hemoglobin of 16.3% of the included women was normal, 51.9% had moderate anemia, 24.4% had mild anemia, and 7.2% had severe anemia. Factors associated with anemia included being in the third trimester (AOR = 2.87, p = 0.026), not consuming vegetables (AOR = 2.62, p = 0.008), meat (AOR = 2.71, p = 0.003), eggs (AOR = 2.98, p = 0.002), and fish (AOR = 2.38, p = 0.005). The finding of unadjusted analysis revealed that women with inadequate minimum dietary diversity were having significantly greater odds of being anemic as compared with those with adequate dietary diversity (OR = 1.94, P = 0.016).Conclusion: More than 80% of pregnant women attending ANC in Mkuranga districts were anemic. Such unprecedented burden of anemia is associated with several factors, which include poor dietary practices such as not consuming iron-rich foods, for example vegetables, meat, eggs, and fish. Women in their third trimester were also more likely to suffer from anemia. This unprecedented burden of anemia in pregnancy can be addressed if efforts to improve feeding practices and early monitoring at the ANCs are sustained.

Of them, 29% presented with mild anemia, while 62% had moderate anemia, and 0.09% succumbed to severe anemia. Factors associated with anemia included being in the third trimester [AOR=2.87, p=0.026]; not consuming vegetables (AOR=2.62, p=0.008), meat (AOR=2.71, p=0.003), eggs (AOR=2.98, p=0.002), and fish (AOR=2.38, p=0.005). Conclusion: More than eight in ten pregnant women attending ANC in Mkuranga districts were anemic. Such unprecedented burden of anemia is associated with a number of factors including feeding practices such as not consuming iron-rich foods like vegetables, meat, eggs, and fish. Background: Anemia in pregnancy is a major public health problem especially in Low and Middle-income countries (LMIC) including Ghana and is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as being present when the hemoglobin concentration in the peripheral blood is 11g/dl or less. In most African countries anemia in pregnancy occurs if the hemoglobin concentration falls below 10g/dl. Pregnant women are at a higher risk of developing anemia due to several factors such as hemodilution, nutritional factors, multiple gestation, socio-economic status and malaria infestation. Anemia in pregnancy is an important cause of maternal mortality and affects half of pregnant women worldwide; with 56% of West African pregnant women being anemic. The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence and identify the risk factors associated with anemia among pregnant women receiving antenatal care at the West Gonja Hospital (WGH) Methods: A cross-sectional was conducted with 136 pregnant women receiving antenatal care at the WGH between January 2017 to February 2018. Random sampling was used to select participants and data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed using the SPSS Version 24.0. Results: A total 71(52.2%) of the study population were anemic, while 65 (47.8%) were not anemic. 20(74.1%) of the 27 pregnant housewives were anemic, while 11(64.7%) of the pregnant farmers were anemic. 27 (96.4%) of the 28 pregnant women who took their iron/folate supplement only some few days were anemic. 12 (100%) of the 12 participants who took their iron/folate supplement a few times a week were anemic. 4 (80%) of the 5 participants who never took their iron/folate supplement were anemic. 21 (70%) of those who did not sleep under ITN were anemic. 33 (84.6%) of the 39 patients who were diagnosed with malaria were also anemic. 28 (87.5%) of the 32 participants who took only 2 meals a day were anemic. 27 (79.4%) of the 34 patients who took liver, beef, chicken and fish only twice weekly were anemic. 15 (88.2%) of the 17 patients who drank tea some days in a week were anemic. Conclusion: Although most of the pregnant women were adequately educated on the most relevant aspects of anemia in pregnancy, more than half of them were still anemic. Anemia was more prevalent among pregnant uneducated housewives with poor nutritional habits. All the pregnant sickle cell disease patients as well as those diagnosed with malaria were also anemic.

Objectives: To analyze the factors associated with anemia in pregnancy in the Cascades region in Burkina Faso. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in antenatal clinics of the Cascades region in Burkina Faso during one month from May to June 2012. We collected data on socio-demographics and health characteristics of pregnant women attending these clinics. Hemoglobin was measured to assess anemia. Factors associated with anemia were identified through a multivariate analysis. Results: A total of 1763 pregnant women, irrespectively of pregnancy stage, were enrolled. The mean (SD) hemoglobin level was 10.6 (1.4) g/dl. The prevalence of anemia in pregnancy was 58.9%, 3.2% of them being severe. Factors associated with anemia were the absence of intermittent preventive treatment of malaria with sulfadoxin-pyrimetamin (OR = 1.3, 95% CI: 1.0-1.7), number of pregnancies >6 (OR = 1.4, 95% CI: 1.1-1.9). Moderate consumption of local alcohol extracted from Palmyra was associated with a lower prevalence of anemia (OR = 0.7, 95% CI: 0.5-0.9). Surprisingly, anemia was not associated with supplementation with folic acid + iron (p = 0.60). Conclusions: Interventions which aim to reduce the prevalence of anemia in pregnancy in Burkina Faso should improve the coverage of the intermittent preventive treatment of malaria and support the limitation of births.

This study aims to investigate insomnia experienced by pregnant women and factors associated with it. This study was designed as hospital-based, descriptive, and cross-sectional research. The participants were 486 people chosen with nonprobability random sampling method. The data were collected through Women’s Health Initiative Insomnia Rating Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and Interview Form. Insomnia prevalence in women participating in this study was found 52.2%. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of insomnia was 2.03 times higher for those in the third trimester than those in the first and second trimesters, 2.19 times higher for those 20 years old and over than younger ones, and 2.63 times higher for those who had depression syndrome than those who did not. Insomnia in pregnant women who participated in this study was found to be at high rates.

Background : Pregnancy is a state of physiological adaptations to accommodate the needs of the developing fetus. Elevated blood glucose during pregnancy could lead to gestational diabetes and anemia could cause intercurrent infection.Objective: To assess the serum glucose level & hemoglobin concentration in third trimester of pregnancy in order to find out the risk of gestational diabetes and physiological anemia.Method: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Physiology Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, between the period of July, 2013 to June,2014. One hundred pregnant women in their third trimester of pregnancy aged 18-35years were enrolled in study group and age matched 100 healthy non-pregnant women were control group. Random serum glucose was estimated by GOD-PAP method and hemoglobin concentration was measured by cyanmethemoglobin (CMG) method. Data were analyzed by student’s un paired t test and chi square test.Result: Mean serum glucose level (6.76±1.72 mmol/L) was significantly higher and hemoglobin concentration (8.21±1.23 g/dl) was significantly lower in pregnant women than non-pregnant women. Increased frequency of high glucose (38%) and low H b(88%) was found in pregnant women in third trimester.Conclusion: This study concludes altered glucose metabolism may lead to gestational diabetes as well as physiological anemia may be exaggerated in third trimester of pregnancyBangladesh Soc Physiol. 2015, December; 10(2): 67-70

Abstract: Hemoglobin (Hb) is a parameter used to determine anemia prevalence. The average level of normal Hb at the end of pregnancy is around 12.5 g/dL, meanwhile, aproximately 5% of pregnant women have Hb level less than 11.0 g/dL. To date, Hb level below 11.0 g/dL especially at the end of pregnancy should be considered as an abnormal phenomenon and is usually caused by iron deficiency and not by hypervolemia which is commonly found in pregnancy. This study was aimed to determine the hemoglobin level of third semester pregnant women in Robert Wolter Mongisidi Hospital Manado. This was a descriptive study with a cross sectional design. Subjects were 39 third semester pregnant women who visited the Obstetric Department of Robert Wolter Mongisidi Hospital and fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The results showed that 25 subjects (64.1%) had low hemoglobin levels and 14 subjects (35.9%) had normal level of hemoglobin. In conclusion, most third semester pregnant women had low hemoglobin levels.Keywords: hemoglobin rate, third trimester pregnant women, anemia Abstrak: Hemoglobin (Hb) darah merupakan parameter yang digunakan untuk menetapkan prevalensi anemia. Nilai normal Hb pada akhir kehamilan rata-rata 12,5 g/dL, dan sekitar 5% wanita hamil konsentrasinya kurang dari 11,0 g/dL. Nilai Hb dibawah 11,0 g/dL terutama pada akhir kehamilan perlu dianggap abnormal dan biasanya disebabkan oleh defisiensi besi dan bukan karena hipervolemia yang umumnya ditemukan pada kehamilan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kadar hemoglobin pada ibu hamil trimester III di Rumah Sakit Robert Wolter Mongisidi Manado. Jenis penelitian ialah deskriptif dengan menggunakan desain potong lintang. Subyek penelitian ialah 39 ibu hamil trimester III yang berkunjung di Poliklinik Kebidanan di Rumah Sakit Robert Wolter Mongisidi Manado yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan 25 subyek (64,1%) memiliki kadar hemoglobin rendah dan 14 subyek (35,9%) memiliki kadar hemoglobin normal. Simpulan penelitian ini ialah sebagian besar ibu hamil trimester III memiliki kadar hemoglobin rendah.Kata kunci: kadar hemoglobin, ibu hamil trimester III, anemia

Entering the second trimester of pregnancy, more iron is required due to the increase in erythrocyte mass, plasma volume andthe development of fetus as well as chorion. Iron is needed the most in the third trimester. The existing hematological iron stageparameters can only detect iron deficiency in the latest stage. The aim of this study was to know the assessment validity of Ret-Heexamination as a new parameter to diagnose iron deficiency in pregnant women with anemia, as well as a screening tool for those interm pregnancy without anemia. The research design was cross sectional. The subjects were women in term pregnancy, gathered fromPKU Muhammadiyah Hospital, Bantul Yogyakarta from May to November 2013. A seven (7) mL blood sample was taken from thecubital vein of the subjects. Two mL of the sample was tested for routine hematological examination using an EDTA tube, while theRet-He was assessed using an automatic hematological instrument Sysmex XT-2000-i (Symex Corporation, Kobe, Japan). The serumof the remaining five (5) mL was used to check the serum iron and TIBC to obtain the saturation value (Tsat) using Cobas analyzerC501 (Roche Diagnostics, Germany), while the serum ferritin (SF) was examined using Minividas. The subjects were classified into two(2) groups based on the Hb levels, namely: anemia (Hb<11 g/dL) and those who did not (Hb≥11 g/dL). Furthermore, they were alsoclassified into two (2) groups based on transferrin saturation values: iron deficient (Tsat <9%) and normal (Tsat ≥9%). From 291subjects, 59 (20.3%) were found to have anemia and 232 (79.7%) did not. The cut off value of Ret-He to diagnose iron deficiency inpregnant women with anemia was 29.8 pg (82% sensitivity and 72% specificity). Meanwhile, the cut-off value of Ret-He for irondeficiency screening in pregnant women without anemia was 29.8 pg, with a sensitivity and specificity of 92% and 87% respectively.The Ret-He holds a good diagnostic validity to detect iron deficiency in pregnancy, with or without anemia.

  ABSTRACT Anemia in pregnancy is a condition in pregnant women with hemoglobin levels less than 11gr% during pregnancy. An increased of anemia often occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy. Pregnant women needs to be supported with nutritional patterns which contain some necessary intermediate in the synthesis of hemoglobin, which  is seaweed. Seaweed type Euchoma sp contains iron, a mixture of which is needed in the synthesis of hemoglobin, has a high bioavailability of substances and is able to stabilize the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and hemoglobin. The purpose of the study was to determine the status of anemia before and after the study. The study design is the pre-post test design. The population of the study was 30 third trimester pregnant women in the Tanjung Pinang City Primary Health Care Work Area. Respondents were given seaweed as much as 200 gram for 7 days and the 8th day repeated hemoglobin levels were measured. After being given an intervention, there was an increase in hemoglobin levels in pregnant women by 1.2gr% and there were no more respondents suffering anemia.   Keywords : consumption of seaweed, anemia in pregnancy

Abstract Background Intermittent Preventive Treatment in Pregnancy (IPTp) with Sulphadoxine/ Pyrimethamine (SP) is used for the prevention of malaria among pregnant women in Zimbabwe. The program is integrated into routine Antenatal care (ANC) where a minimum of three doses is recommended during each pregnancy. The third dose coverage for Chiredzi District has consistently been below the 80% target coverage. We evaluated IPTp implementation in Chiredzi to understand the reasons for underperformance. Methods An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted using a Process-Outcome evaluation with the Logical Framework Approach. We interviewed 50 women in postnatal care and determined ANC services accessed using their ANC booklets. Health workers were interviewed for knowledge of the program. Stock availability and drug delivery records were reviewed using checklists at five high-volume sites. Epi Info 7.2.4.0™ was used for data capturing and analysis. The software was used to calculate frequencies, medians, proportions, odds ratios and p-values at a 95% confidence interval. The outcome variable was receiving ≥3 doses of SP which was computed against the independent variables such as client-related characteristics to determine which factors were contributory using univariate and bivariate analysis. Results Only 12/50 (24%) women received ≥3 doses of SP during their pregnancy. Two (4%) women started their ANC visits in the first trimester. Thirty-three (66%) had missed at least one SP dose during their ANC visit because of medicine unavailability. Knowing the number of times SP is given (OR 11.9; 95% CI 2.54-55.8) and having attended at least 4 ANC visits (OR 13.6; 95% CI 1.59 -116.0) increased the likelihood of receiving adequate SP dosing. Conclusions The IPTp-SP program in Chiredzi District was underperforming, we attributed this largely to health system factors. Erratic supply and stock-outs of SP resulted in clients missing SP doses. Clients also missed SP doses because of late ANC booking and lack of knowledge on IPTp benefits. Improving stock management and raising community awareness on prevention of malaria among pregnant women was recommended.
