Introduction: Immature intestines are the major problem in prematurity. Postnatal oral spermine has been shown in studies to improve intestinal maturation in rats and piglets. This study aimed to find out the efficacy of spermine in rabbits during gestation.Method: An experimental study was done in an unblinded, randomized manner on those treated with and without spermine administration. A morphological examination of hematoxylin–eosin-stained villi was performed under a light microscope with a focus on villi height. Data were subjected to analysis. Results: The median of the spermine-treated group was found to be higher at 24, 26, and 28 days than the non-spermine group, but was not significantly different. Conclusion: Oral spermine supplementation during gestation might improve intestinal villi height in immature rabbit intestines.

Objective: To determine effect of citrullus lanatus juice on hemoglobin and Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase (SGPT) level. Study design and setting: It was an experimental study conducted on healthy rabbits for sixty days in the research department of pharmacy University of Karachi. Methodology: Current study was planned to evaluate effect of Citrullus lanatus juice on red blood cells, hemoglobin and liver enzyme. 60 days study was performed at 2 different doses i.e 3and 6ml/kg on rabbits. These rabbits were from either gender and were divided into 3 groups their weight ranges from 1200 to 1800 grams. Group A is control group (Normal saline 6ml/kg), Group B is treated group (3 ml/kg), Group C is treated group (6ml/kg). After taking mean of all values they are compared with control group. Significance of mean can be estimated by Tukes Post Hoc Test. P<0.05 estimated as significant. Results: It was found that count of red blood cells rises significantly along with rise in hemoglobin level. As far as liver enzyme serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) was concerned its concentration decreases slightly. Conclusion: Citrullus lanatus juice contain ingredients which are important for RBC hemoglobin and synthesis .It also contains important antioxidants that have organoprotective role due to which SGPT level decreases even in healthy animals as compared to control groups

The aim of this double blind prospective experimental study was to compare the influence of polyglactin 910 (Vicryl, Ethycon ) and plain catgut (Soficat-Plein,Braun) as subcuticular tissue sutures on wound healing and scar formation in sheep. Scar excision together with the surrounding tissue was made three months later. Scars were compared visually, photographed and examined under a light microscope. All scars were cosmetically acceptable, linearly hardly visible, aplanated and less than 1 mm in width with no difference between the parts in which plain catgut or polyglactin 910 were used. All photographs were examined by a plastic surgeon as well as by a dermatologist and they confirmed that all scars were cosmetically acceptable, hardly visible, aplanated and less than 1 mm in width. During the light microscopic examination done by the dermatologist foreign body granulomas were found in two scars where the subcuticular plain catgut was used. Concerning the plain catgut as an animal and foreign body granuloma inductor, the use of polyglactin 910 seems to be beter.

Probiotics actively participate in neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the role of gut microbiota in brain disorders and vascular dementia (VaD) remains unclear. We used a mouse model of VaD induced by a permanent right unilateral common carotid arteries occlusion (rUCCAO) to investigate the neuroprotective effects and possible underlying mechanisms ofClostridium butyricum. Following rUCCAO,C. butyricumwas intragastrically administered for 6 successive weeks. Cognitive function was estimated. Morphological examination was performed by electron microscopy and hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining. The BDNF-PI3K/Akt pathway-related proteins were assessed by western blot and immunohistochemistry. The diversity of gut microbiota and the levels of butyrate in the feces and the brains were determined. The results showed thatC. butyricumsignificantly attenuated the cognitive dysfunction and histopathological changes in VaD mice.C. butyricumnot only increased the levels of BDNF and Bcl-2 and decreased level of Bax but also induced Akt phosphorylation (p-Akt) and ultimately reduced neuronal apoptosis. Moreover,C. butyricumcould regulate the gut microbiota and restore the butyrate content in the feces and the brains. These results suggest thatC. butyricummight be effective in the treatment of VaD by regulating the gut-brain axis and that it can be considered a new therapeutic strategy against VaD.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the patency rates and the histologic findings of neoendothelialization according to the length of implanted polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) with an internal diameter of 3 mm. Under the operating microscope, grafts of 8 and 24 mm in length were implanted in the right carotid arteries of rabbits. All implanted grafts were 25 μm in fibril length and 0.39 mm in wall thickness. All the grafts were harvested at different intervals and observed for the patency rates and histologic findings with light microscope and scanning electron microscope. There was no difference in patency rates according to the length of implanted PTFE. Histologically the formation of neointima and subintim was delayed and incomplete in longer implanted PTFE.

This study was aimed at studying the effect of the induction of immune tolerance to swine cardiac myosin from anti-L3T4 monoclonal antibody injection and whether the immune tolerance could protect mice with myosin-induced myocarditis from myocardial injury. Twenty-four Balb/c mice were divided into two groups at random. All of the mice were immunized with swine cardiac myosin on the 1st day, 14th, 28th, 42nd, and 52nd day. Immune tolerance was induced by triplicate injections of 400 μg anti-L3T4 McAb on the 0 day (intravenous), 1st day, and 2nd day (intraperitoneal) in McAb-treated group. In the saline-treated group, saline of the same volume as anti-L3T4 monoclonal antibody was used as a control. The sera and hearts biopsies of all mice were collected on the 58th day. The anti-cardiac myosin antibody was examined with ELISA, and pathological changes of heart were observed by light microscope. It was shown that mice immunized with swine cardiac myosin could produce anti-myosin antibody and the anti-cardiac myosin antibody was positive in most of the saline-treated group but negative in the McAb-treated group. Morphologically, myocardial degeneration, necrosis, and infiltration of inflammatory cells were found in the saline-treated group but not in the McAb-treated group. In conclusion, this study indicated that the immune tolerance to cardiac myosin was induced by the anti-L3T4 monoclonal antibody, and accordingly myocardial injury could be prevented by induction of immune tolerance.Key words: anti-L3T4 monoclonal antibody, myosin, immune tolerance, myocarditis.

The aim of this research was to observe the histological of the thymus in tegal duck (Anas javanicus) according to the variation of ages. The animals used in this research were one month, two months and three months old of tegal duck. The thymus of each duck was analyzed by Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) method and then observed under a light microscope. The result of the research performed differences in thymus structure of these three ages. The cortex had increased at the age of 2 months and decreased at the age of 3 months. The longest diameter of medulla at the age of 3 months was followed by ages 2 months and 1 month of tegal ducks. The distribution of Hassall's body had increased at every age level. So, the cortex thickness decreased at the age of 2 months to 3 months, while the diameter of the medulla was getting longer.

Objectives. Dutasteride, a dual 5α-reductase inhibitor, is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. Nevertheless, its histopathological effects on the morphometrics of blood vessels and glands are still controversial. The aim here was to assess the histopathological effects of dutasteride in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia in a retrospective study. Methods. Patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia more than 40 cm3 in prostatic volume were administered 0.5 mg of dutasteride daily or left untreated prior to receiving a transurethral resection of the prostate. Images of sections stained with hematoxylin/eosin and with anti-CD31 antibody were analyzed. Results. In the dutasteride-treated group, the duration of administration was weeks. Artery/arteriole density and vein/venule density in benign prostatic tissue were both lower in the dutasteride-treated group than in the control group. The vein/venule area as a percentage of the whole area was also lower in the dutasteride-treated group, while the artery/arteriole area did not show a significant difference. Glandular/CD31-expressing vessel densities as well as glandular/CD31-expressing vessel areas were comparable between the two groups. Conclusions. Dutasteride reduced the artery/arteriole and vein/venule densities and the proportion of vein/venule area in the tissue of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the response of osteoblasts to calcium phosphate with different surface modification, and to evaluate the osteoinductive capabilities of these biomaterials. 60HA/40α-TCP ceramics sintered at 1250oC was applied in this study. A ceramic cylinder with F5mm×8mm and slice with F10mm×1mm were prepared respectively. One third of the ceramics was used to form bone-like apatite (BLA), and the surface of another one third was modified with collagen. Osteoblasts (1×106/ml) were co-cultured with the three kinds of thin slices for 12h, 24h and 48h. SEM observation was applied to evaluate whether the surface modification and BLA formation could affect the attachment and proliferation of osteoblast in vitro. The three kinds of cylinder samples were implanted in dog muscle to evaluate their differences in osteoinduction. Cells grew in multi-layers and attached to the surface and proliferated well in the collagen and HA/TCP group. In the untreated and BLA precipitated groups, cells did not attach to the surface well. Osteoinduction was good in the BLA precipitated group and the amount of bone formed was higher; in the untreated group and collagen-treated group, no bone formation was observed in the tested period. This result indicated that the scaffold used in cell-materials composites in vitro and that in osteoinductive material based tissue engineering in vivo was not same.

The objective of this experimental study was to assess the insecticidal efficacy of afoxolaner (NexGard®) against bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) on dogs. For each challenge, 20 bedbugs were placed in two chambers positioned in contact to the dog’s skin for 15 min, after which live fed parasites were counted and incubated for survival evaluations. On Day 0, 7 dogs assigned to the treated group were administered afoxolaner orally at the registered dose. All 14 dogs were challenged on Days 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28, and the collected live fed C. lectularius incubated for 72 h (Day 1), and 72 h and 96 h (Days 7, 14, 21 and 28) for survival evaluation. The percent feeding in the control group ranged from 95% to 98.6% and the percent of live fed bedbugs at 96 h ranged from 99.3% to 100% in the control group, demonstrating the viability of the strain and their capacity to feed on dogs. Significantly fewer live fed bedbugs were counted in the treated group, compared to the control group, at all time-points. The reduction of live fed C. lectularius in the afoxolaner group was 41.4% at 72 h after the Day 1 challenge, and 77.2%, 82.7%, 85.0% and 63.5% at 96 h after the Days 7, 14, 21 and 28 challenges, respectively. It is hypothesized that monthly treatment of dogs with afoxolaner could help in preventing a bed bug population from installing in a household if bedbugs bite dogs in the presence of humans.
