The present study is planned to examine the antioxidant activity (AA) and the protective effect of the essential oil of Citrus limon (EOC) against aspirin-induced histopathological changes in the brain, lung, and intestine of female rats. For this purpose, 28 albino rats were classified to control group (group C), aspirin group (group A), EOC group (group EOC), and pretreatment with EOC and treated with aspirin group (group EOC + A). The antioxidant activities of EOC were evaluated by three different assays including reducing power, β-carotene, and scavenging of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Our results found that EOC represents, respectively (0.064 ± 0.013 and 0.027 ± 00 mg Quer E/100 µL), of flavonoid and flavonol. Then, it exhibited a potential activity of reducing power (at 300 mg/mL, which was found to be 0.82 ± 0.07), β-carotene-linoleic acid (AA% = 69.28 ± 3.5%), and scavenging of H2O2 (IC50 = 0.23 ± 0.008 mg/mL). In vivo, aspirin given to rats at the dose of 600 mg/kg body weight induced histomorphological damage in brain, lung, and intestine. However, our data found that the pretreatment with EOC offered a significant protection against the injury induced by aspirin. It can be concluded that the protective effect of EOC can be due to its antioxidant activities.

Acoustic trauma is a common reason for hearing loss. Different agents are used to prevent the harmful effect of acoustic trauma on hearing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential preventive effect of <em>Nigella sativa</em> (black cumin) oil in acoustic trauma. Our experimental study was conducted with 20 Sprague Downey female rats (mean age, 12 months; mean weight 250 g). All of the procedures were held under general anesthesia. Following otoscopic examinations, baseline-hearing thresholds were obtained using auditory brainstem responses (ABR). To create acoustic trauma, the rats were then exposed to white band noise of 4 kHz with an intensity level of 107 dB in a soundproof testing room. On Day 1 following acoustic trauma, hearing threshold measurements were repeated. The rats were divided into two groups as the study group (n: 10) and the controls (n: 10). 2 mL/kg/day of <em>Nigella sativa</em> oil was given to the rats in the study group orally. On Day 4 following acoustic trauma, ABR measurements were repeated again. There was no difference between the baseline hearing thresholds of the rats before acoustic trauma (P&gt;0.005). After the acoustic trauma, hearing thresholds were increased and there was no significant statistically difference between the hearing thresholds of the study and control groups (P=0.979). At the 4th day following acoustic trauma, hearing thresholds of the rats in control group were found to be higher than those in the study group (P=0.03). Our results suggest that <em>Nigella sativa</em> oil has a protective effect against acoustic trauma in early period. This finding should be supported with additional experimental and clinical studies, especially to determine the optimal dose, duration and frequency of potential <em>Nigella sativa</em> oil therapy.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the central nervous system and it is characterized by excessive demyelination PURPOSE: The study aim to investigate the possible protective effect of ozone (O3) in ethidium bromide (EB) induced demyelination in rats either alone or in combination with corticosteroid in order to decreases the dose of steroid therapy. MATERIAL and METHODS: Rats were divided into 7 groups Group (1) normal control rats received saline. Group (2) sham-operated rats received saline. Group (3) sham operated rats received oxygen. Group (4) EB-treated rats received EB. Group (5) EB treated rats received oxygen. Group (6) EB treated rats received methyl prednisolone (MP) Group (7) EB treated rats received half the dose of MP concomitant with ozone. RESULTS: Significant improvement in the brain serotonin, dopamine, noradrenalin. A reduction of MDA,TNF-COX2 immune-reactivity was noticed in MP and oxygen groups . Furthermore, best amelioration was achieved by combining half the dose of methyl-prednisolone with ozone. CONCLUSION: We concluded that ozone has a protective effect on demyelination and can be used due to its protective effect in demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

Abstract The toxic effects of ionizing radiation on the gonads have been widely recognized. Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) has a protective effect on ovarian injury, and although it is known that mitochondria are involved in this process, the specific mechanism is not fully understood. The present study analysed the changes in the serum AMH and ovarian histology in Sprague-Dawley female rats exposed to X-ray radiation only or co-administered with S1P. The mRNA expression profile of ovarian tissue was further analysed via next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics approaches to screen out candidate mitochondria-related genes. Finally, differentially expressed target genes were verified by real-time PCR. The results showed that ionizing radiation could reduce the serum AMH level, destroy ovarian structure and decrease the number of follicles in rats, while S1P administration significantly attenuated the impairment of ovarian function. Gene ontology (GO) and KEGG pathway analysis revealed that a variety of genes related to mitochondrial function were differentially expressed, and the protective effect of S1P on mitochondria was more obvious in the acute phase 24 h after radiation. The differentially expressed mitochondrial function-related genes associated with the protective effect of S1P were UQCRH, MICU2 and GPX4, which were subsequently verified by RT-PCR. Therefore, ionizing radiation has a significant effect on ovarian function, and S1P has a protective effect on radiation-induced ovarian injury, in which mitochondria may play an important role. This study sheds new light on the mechanism of radiation-induced ovarian injury and helps develop a novel potential strategy to control it.

Cisplatin (CDDP) is one of the most effective antineoplastic drugs used in chemotherapy, strategies to protect tissues against cisplatin nephrotoxicity is a clinical interest. This study aimed to evaluate the possible protective effect of berberine nanoparticles (BBR-NPs) against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in female rats. Intraperitoneal (IP) injection of cisplatin (8 mg/kg) caused significant decrease in RBC, Hb, Hct, WBC and platelets. Also, cisplatin caused disturbances in kidney function as documented by a significant increase in urea, uric acid, creatinine and MDA, with significant decreases in the total protein, albumin, GSH and total thiol.TNF- , caspase-3, IL-2, IL-6 and IL-1were increased in cisplatin treated group. The histopathological changes in cisplatin group include degeneration and desquamation of tubular epithelial cells, hyaline cast formation, inflammatory cell infiltration and tubular dilation. Oral administration of BBR-NPs at a dose 1mg/kg/day for 30 days after cisplatin produced significant decrease in the levels of urea, uric acid, creatinine, TNF- and caspase-3 as well as kidney MDA with a marked increase in total protein, albumin, GSH, total thiol and repairing the histopathological changes. Scanning microscope of RBC showed the protective effect of BBR-NPs against the different changes induced by CDDP. The present study suggested that the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of BBR-NPs may prevent CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity via decreasing the oxidative stress, inhibiting the inflammation and apoptosis.

Background: kefir is a fermented milk product that demonstrates numerous health benefits including antioxidant and immunomodulatory. Aim: to study the protective effect kefir on the expression of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) in endometrial stromal cells and endometrial thickness on female rats that were exposed to arsenic. Methods: twenty-five female Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into five groups (CRL, As, T1, T2, T3). Control group (given a normal diet), As group (given the normal diet and exposed to arsenic trioxide 2 mg/kgBW/day). The T1; T2; T3 were exposed to arsenic trioxide 2 mg/kgBW/day and treated with different doses of kefir (1.25; 2.5; and 5 mL/kgBW/day, respectively) for 35 days. The rats of group As treated with arsenic trioxide only and group CRL served as control with normal feed in water. Cytological samples were taken after 35 days of treatment and examined every day to see the rat oestrus phase, and the proestrus phase of the oestrous cycle was chosen for termination. Uterine tissue fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for tissue preparation. ERα expression in endometrial stromal cells was analized using immunohistochemistry method, endometrial thickness was observed using histopathological methods. Results: significant reduction of ERα expression in endometrial stromal cells and endometrial thickness in female rats exposed to arsenic were observed in groups on treated rats (p ≤ 0.000; 0.009, respectively). Conclusion: the administration of kefir in female Wistar rats exposed to arsenic had shown significantly differences on ERα expressions and endometrial thickness. The smallest dose of kefir (1.25 mL/kgBW/day) could increase ERα expression and endometrial thickness in female Wistar rats with arsenic exposure. Therefore kefir has protective effect related to female reproductive system.
