An unsteady formulation of the Kutta–Joukowski theorem has been used with a higher-order potential flow method for the prediction of three-dimensional unsteady lift. This study describes the implementation and verification of the approach in detail sufficient for reproduction by future developers. Verification was conducted using the classical responses to a two-dimensional airfoil entering a sharp-edged gust and a sinusoidal gust with errors of less than 1% for both. The method was then compared with the three-dimensional unsteady lift response of a wing as modeled in two unsteady vortex-lattice methods. Results showed agreement in peak lift coefficient prediction to within 1% and 7%, respectively, and mean agreement within 0.25% for the full response.

This paper deals with the preliminaries essential for any theoretical investigation of three-dimensional sails—namely, with the two-dimensional flow of inviscid incompressible fluid past an infinitely-long flexible inelastic membrane. If the distance between the luff and the leach of the two-dimensional sail is c , and if the length of the material of the sail between luff and leach is ( c + l ), then the problem is to determine the flow when the angle of incidence α between the chord of the sail and the wind, and the ratio l / c are both prescribed; especially, we need to know the shape of, the loading on, and the tension in, the sail. The aerodynamic theory follows the lines of the conventional linearized theory of rigid aerofoils; but in the case of a sail, there is an additional equation to be satisfied which ex­presses the static equilibrium of each element of the sail. The resulting fundamental integral equation—the sail equation—is consequently quite different from those of aerofoil theory, and it is not susceptible to established methods of solution. The most striking result is the theoretical possibility of more than one shape of sail for given values of α and l / c ; but there appears to be no difficulty in choosing the shape which occurs in reality. The simplest result for these realistic shapes is that the lift coefficient of a sail exceeds that of a rigid flat plate (for which l / c = 0) by an amount approximately equal to 0.636 ( l / c ) ½ . It seems very doubtful whether analytical solutions of the sail equation will be found, but a method is developed in this paper which comes to the next best thing; namely, an explicit expression, as a matrix quotient, which gives numerical values to a high degree of accuracy at so many chord-wise points. The method should have wide application to other types of linear equations.

A higher-order potential flow method is adapted for the aerodynamic performance prediction of small rotors used in multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles. The method uses elements of distributed vorticity which results in numerical robustness with both a prescribed and relaxed wake representation. The radial loading and wake shapes of a rotor in hover were compared to experiment to show strong agreement for three disk loadings. The advancing flight performance prediction of a single rotor was compared to a single rotor was compared to a blade element momentum theory based approach and to experiment. Comparison showed good thrust and power agreement with experiment across a range of advance ratios and angles of attack. Prediction in descending flights showed improvements in comparison to the blade element momentum theory approach. The model was extended to a quadrotorm configuration showing the differences associated to vehicle orientation and rotor rotational direction.

Large circumferential varying pressure levels produced by aerodynamic flow interactions between downstream stators and struts present a potential noise and stability margin liability in a compression component. These interactions are presently controlled by tailoring the camber and/or stagger angles of vanes neighboring the fan frame struts. This paper reports on the design and testing of a unique set of swept and leaned fan outlet guide vanes (OGVs) that do not require this local tailoring even though the OGVs are closely coupled with the fan frame struts and splitter to reduce engine length. The swept and leaned OGVs not only reduce core-duct diffusion, but they also reduce the potential flow interaction between the stator and the strut relative to that produced by conventional radial OGVs. First, the design of the outlet guide vanes using a single bladerow three-dimensional viscous flow analysis is outlined. Next, a two-dimensional potential flow analysis was used for the coupled OGV-frame system to obtain a circumferentially non-uniform stator stagger angle distribution to further reduce the upstream static pressure disturbance. Recognizing the limitations of the two-dimensional potential flow analysis for this highly three-dimensional set of leaned OGVs, as a final evaluation of the OGV-strut system design, a full three-dimensional viscous analysis of a periodic circumferential sector of the OGVs, including the fan frame struts and splitter, was performed. The computer model was derived from a NASA-developed code used in simulating the flow field for external aerodynamic applications with complex geometries. The three-dimensional coupled OGV-frame analysis included the uniformly-staggered OGVs configuration and the variably-staggered OGVs configuration determined by the two-dimensional potential flow analysis. Contrary to the two-dimensional calculations, the three-dimensional analysis revealed significant flow problems with the variably-staggered OGVs configuration and showed less upstream flow non-uniformity with the uniformly-staggered OGVs configuration. The flow redistribution in both the radial and tangential directions, captured fully only in the three-dimensional analysis, was identified as the prime contributor to the lower flow non-uniformity with the uniformly-staggered OGVs configuration. The coupled three-dimensional analysis was also used to validate the design at off-design conditions. Engine test performance and stability measurements with both uniformly- and variably-staggered OGVs configurations with and without the presence of inlet distortion confirmed the conclusions from the three-dimensional analysis.

SummaryThis paper presents the results of some calculations of the incompressible turbulent boundary layer on an infinite yawed wing. A discussion is made of the effects of increasing lift coefficient, and increasing Reynolds number, on the displacement thickness, and on the magnitude and direction of the skin friction. The effects of the state of the boundary layer (laminar or turbulent) along the attachment line are also considered.A study is made to determine whether the behaviour of the boundary layer can adequately be predicted by a two-dimensional calculation. It is concluded that there is no simple way to do this (as is provided, in the laminar case, by the principle of independence). However, with some modification, a two-dimensional calculation can be made to give an acceptable numerical representation of the chordwise components of the flow.

A theroetical analysis is given for potential flow over, around and under a vehicle of general shape moving close to a plane ground surface. Solutions are given both in the form of a small-gap asymptotic expansion and a direct numerical computation, with close agreement between the two for two-dimensional flows with and without circulation. Some results for three-dimensional bodies are discussed.

This paper discusses aerodynamic design methods of volute casings used in turbocharger turbines. A quasi-three-dimensional (Q-3D) design method is proposed in which a group of extended two-dimensional potential flow equations and the streamline equation are numerically solved to obtain the geometry of spiral volutes. A tongue loss model, based on the turbulence wake theory, is also presented, and good agreement with experimental data is shown.

In the rapidly deploying process of the unmanned aerial vehicle with folding wings, the aerodynamic characteristics could be largely different owing to the effects of deformation rate and the aerodynamic interference. The investigation on the unsteady aerodynamics is of great significance for the stability analysis and control design. The lifting-line method and the vortex-lattice method are improved to calculate the unsteady aerodynamics in the morphing stage. It is validated that the vortex-lattice method predicts the unsteady lift coefficient more appropriately than the lifting-line method. Different tandem wing configurations with deployable wings are simulated with different deformation rates during the morphing stage by the vortex-lattice method. As results indicated, the unsteady lift coefficient and the induced drag of the fore wing rise with the deformation rate increasing, but it is reversed for the hind wing. Additionally, the unsteady lift coefficient of the tandem wing configuration performs well with a larger stagger, a larger magnitude of the gap and a larger wingspan of the fore wing; however, the total induced drag has a larger value for the configuration that the two lifting surfaces with the same wingspans are closer to each other.

Abstract An analysis of paraglider performance has revealed that wing section drag is the most significant contribution to overall drag. Wind tunnel measurements performed on two-dimensional hollow models indicate that intake drag is less significant than previously thought. An experimental investigation into the characteristics of a ‘quasi ’ -two-dimensional flexible model consisting of solid ribs covered with a fabric skin was performed at realistic Reynolds numbers. The main cause of performance deterioration was found to be a significant reduction in section lift coefficient when compared to a similar solid wing section. This is believed to be mainly due to two factors: a large trailing edge separation and the deformation of the wing between ribs. The deformation was measured and it was shown that the deformed shape is less capable of generating high lift coefficients than the design section. It is thought that the extent of the trailing edge separation is increased due to the presence of streamwise grooves caused by the shape deformation of the wing. The shape of the separated region was found to be strongly three-dimensional with the separation point being about half a chord-length further upstream along the ribs. A small separation bubble was also observed immediately behind the lip of the intake, due to the fabric ‘flaring’ open. Based on the observations presented a number of suggestions for improved wings have been made.
