Adoption of best soil and water management practices is desirable for sustainable production intensification. However, farmers have difficulties in adopting them within a system approach to management, missing out on positive results for themselves and for society. A partnership between the Brazilian No-Till Farmers Federation and Itaipu Binacional authority adopted a participatory management strategy, as proposed by the National Water Resources Policy, allowing important decisions regarding the use of water to be made in participatory Watershed Committees, to address such farmers’ difficulties. In this paper, we review the development and application of the Participatory Quality Index approach based on the principles of conservation agriculture to improve the quality of no-till systems in the Paraná 3 watershed within the Cultivating Good Water program. We analyze the available documentation and experiences of the program’s executors, highlighting the results from the perspective of sustainability of multiple uses of water in a watershed.

SUMMARYThis paper follows the progress made in India for research and farmer adoption of conservation agriculture (CA) since the publication of Erenstein (2012), who contested the idea that zero-till (ZT) establishment of wheat in rice–wheat systems could be further developed into full CA systems. Data presented in this paper show that research has successfully found solutions for both the wheat and rice phases of the rice–wheat systems of the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) in the past 8 years. It shows that by finding solutions in both the rice and wheat phases, yields, water use efficiency and profits increased, while labour needs reduced. Indian scientists have also confirmed these benefits in participatory on-farm research in various locations, both east and west regions of the IGP. Farmers see for themselves through experimentation that they get higher yields with less cost and with more efficient use of inputs and water. A key factor has been the development of improved seed drills with the help of Indian private sector manufacturers of agricultural equipment. Indian scientists have also successfully conducted CA research on several other crops and in other regions besides the IGP. The paper shows that it is better to introduce parts of the CA management practices in a step-wise fashion first, rather than introducing the entire package at once since farmers first have to test and evaluate a new technology to understand how it benefits them personally before they will adopt it. The paper concludes that in the rice–wheat systems of South Asia, adoption of CA is indeed possible to achieve although it is still a work in progress. CA is a complex technology package and it takes time to overcome all of the contested issues mentioned in Erenstein (2012).

Decline in soil organic carbon (SOC) due to intensive tillage and removal or burning of crop residues is considered a major threat to maintaining soil quality and meeting future challenges of food production at national and global scales. Adoption of conservation-agriculture practices (no till and residue retention) is necessary to promote soil structural stability and increases in SOC content and enzyme activities. We evaluated the impact of tillage and residue-management practices on yield, soil labile-C pools, aggregate stability and soil enzyme activities after seven cycles of a rice (Oryza sativa L.)–wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) system on the Indo-Gangetic Plain of India. Treatments included four combinations of tillage and crop establishment in rice (main plots), and three combinations of tillage and residue management in wheat (subplots). Irrespective of rice-establishment method, mean grain yield of no-till wheat with rice-residue mulch (NTW+RR) was 9% and 22% higher, respectively, than of conventional-till (CTW) or no-till wheat with no rice-residue mulch. Soil C pools (very labile, labile, less-labile and non-labile) were significantly higher under a no-till dry-seeded rice (NTDSR)–NTW+RR cycle than conventional-till puddled transplanted rice–CTW. Macro-aggregates (>0.25 mm) had higher labile C pools, glomalin content and enzyme activities than micro-aggregates. NTW+RR significantly increased soil C pools within both macro- and micro-aggregates. Compared with CTW, NTW+RR increased soil dehydrogenase, cellulase and alkaline phosphatase activities by 23%, 34% and 14%, and water-soluble organic C by 31%, and increased water-stable aggregates and mean-weight-diameter. NTDSR–NTW+RR increased SOC, enzyme activity, aggregate stability and wheat grain yield. Results indicated that soil labile-C pools across aggregate fractions were the most sensitive indicators of soil quality when determining the effects of changes in management practices. Furthermore, adoption of no till and residue retention may improve sustainability in rice–wheat systems of the Indo-Gangetic Plain.

<p>Soils are at the heart of agro-ecosystems. In various parts of Europe, soils, their structure and function are under pressure from intensive farming practices and global changes. The main consequences are a loss of biodiversity, a decrease in organic matter content, an increase in their susceptibility to erosion. In this context, some farmers are adopting innovative practices to increase the quality of their soils. Among innovative practices, those related to conservation agriculture are particularly highlighted.</p><p>Conservation Agriculture practices are based on the threefold principles of (i) minimizing mechanical soil disturbance (e.g. no tillage), (ii) permanent soil cover, and (iii) diversification of crop species grown in the plots. These practices are encouraged by the farmers who adopt them and some stakeholders (ASBLs, advisors, etc.). Some related practices raise questions (use of herbicides) and the effects of the practices on the soil are subject to debate within the scientific communities.</p><p>The physical properties of soils are traditionally estimated by a series of laboratory tests that are resource-, time- and money-intensive. We propose to present a new pragmatic approach to assess the functioning and quality of agricultural soils, the 'slake test'. In the development phase, this approach has been tested for contrasting fertilisation and tillage modalities in various long-term trials at the Walloon Agricultural Research Centre (CRA-W).</p><p>A slake test is a simple and visual experiment shown by promoters of conservation agriculture. It consists of immersing a metal basket containing a soil sample and observing how this sample decomposes. It is done qualitatively, in two glass cylinders to compare soil samples from ploughed and no-till plots. Although this test is a quick way to assess the structural stability of a soil, its protocol has not been formalized and its results objectified by a quantitative method. We developed an original approach, the ©QuantiSlakeTest, aimed at continuously measuring the disintegration of the soil sample.</p><p>This original experimental design was first tested by comparing two contrasted treatments of a long term field experiment in Chastres (Belgium). This field experiment was conducted between 2004 and 2018 by the CRA-W for comparing soil management practices. Samples were taken from plots of treatment T (tillage) and treatment NT (no-tillage) in five repetitions (10 plots). In each plot, seven samples were taken in the superficial layer using Kopecky rings. The samples were dried 48 hours at 50°C before being tested. </p><p>The application of ©QuantiSlakeTest highlights significant differences between tilled and non tilled plots. After one minute, the relative residual weight are significantly different between treatments (T: 0.76±0.16, NT: 0.95±0.06, p<0.001). At stabilisation, after 20 min, samples from tilled plots have lost more than 50% of their weight, while those from no-tilled plots have lost less than 30% (T: 0.49±0.32, NT: 0.71±0.22, p<0.001).</p><p>These early results confirm that ©QuantiSlakeTest is a credible approach for assessing the effect of soil management practices on soil stability, in controlled experimental conditions. We are now finetuning the protocol, trying the approach with room temperature dried samples and comparing other modalities (fertilisation, organic matter amendment).</p>

Introduction: Cancer is a public health problem in Mexico, epidemiologically speaking and for biopsychosocially affecting those who suffer. In order to address this problem, in the medical area technological advances have allowed the management of the disease, while psycho-oncology has studied the psychosocial aspects present in the process of said condition and proposes problems that support the adaptation to the condition, decrease of psychopathological symptoms and an adequate quality of life. Objective: To analyze the characteristics of the clinical interventions made in Mexico in ​​psychooncology´s area in patients with active medical treatment. Material and Method: A review of the literature in the PubMed, Redalyc and Science Direct databases was carried out with the keywords "Psychooncology" and "Mexico". Studies were identified in which a psycho-oncological intervention was performed in Mexico and its characteristics was analyzed using the “PICO” strategy. Results: Three articles were selected that fulfill the inclusion criteria, 66.6% were randomized controlled clinical studies and 33.3% quasi-experimental, 66.6% of the interventions performed were cognitive-behavioral and 100% positive results in their variables evaluated. Conclusion: The information available in Mexico reflects the existing problem in descriptive studies of psychosocial variables related to cancer, however, it is still scarce in relation to psycho-oncological interventions, however, the evidence found demonstrates its problem in variables of anxiety, quality of life, body image and distress.

The Federal Compulsory Medical Insurance Fund created the system of a monitoring of medical aid provided for the oncology patients, which allows realizing control over execution of the treatment guidelines on every stage. Changes been made in the governing documents, aimed at development of patient-specific records of provided medical aid at suspicion on the malignant tumors or in proven case of the malignant tumors. The article presents the data on control and expert activities demonstrating positive results of that work.

In December, 1987, the states in the Chesapeake Bay region, along with the federal government, signed an agreement which called for a 40% reduction in nitrogen and phosphorus loadings to the Bay by the year 2000. To accomplish this goal, major reductions in nutrient loadings associated with agricultural management practices were deemed necessary. The objective of this study was to determine if reducing fertilizer inputs to the NT system would result in a reduction in nitrogen contamination of groundwater. In this study, groundwater, soil, and percolate samples were collected from two cropping systems. The first system was a conventional no-till (NT) grain production system with a two-year rotation of corn/winter wheat/double crop soybean. The second system, denoted low-input sustainable agriculture (LISA), produced the same crops using a winter legume and relay-cropped soybeans into standing wheat to reduce nitrogen and herbicide inputs. Nitrate-nitrogen concentrations in groundwater were significantly lower under the LISA system. Over 80% of the NT groundwater samples had NO3-N concentrations greater than 10 mgl-1, compared to only 4% for the LISA cropping system. Significantly lower soil mineral N to a depth of 180 cm was also observed. The NT soil had nearly twice as much mineral N present in the 90-180 cm portion than the LISA cropping system.

Recent advances made in the reuse of pulp and paper industry sludges in hardboard production are explained. Data obtained from pilot and full-scale plants using primary sludge of a pulp and paper industry as an additive in the production of hardboard is presented. An economic analysis of the reuse of pulp and paper primary sludge in hardboard manufacturing is given. The quality of the hardboard produced is tested and compared with the qualities of the hardboard produced by the same plant before the addition of primary sludge. The hardboard with primary sludge additive has been used in Turkey for about a year in the manufacturing of office and home furniture. The results are very satisfactory when the primary sludge is used at 1/4 ratio.
