Achieving high yields is a challenge for sugarcane producers due to the diverse environmental conditions to which the crop is subjected. In tropical and subtropical regions, where sugarcane is typically cultivated, crop diseases are common. This necessitates the development of disease management techniques. Among these techniques, chemical control is of particular significance due to the development of new antifungal agents, such as pyraclostrobin. For some crops, pyraclostrobin has a positive influence on yield due to its effects on plant physiology. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological responses and yield of three sugarcane cultivars treated with the fungicide, pyraclostrobin. The experiment was performed in a randomized block design (RBD) with a split-plot arrangement; the variables analyzed were the application or non-application of fungicide in the plots and, in the subplots, the evaluation times after fungicide application. Both the rate of photosynthesis and the antioxidant enzyme (Superoxide Dismutase, Catalase and Ascorbate Peroxidades) activity increased in plants treated with fungicide in comparison to untreated plants, and in the RB855156 cultivar the stomatal conductance, transpiration, and nocturnal respiratory rate were increased. Furthermore, application of pyraclostrobin increased stalk yield and the green biomass index in the RB855156 and RB86751 sugarcane cultivars. In certain cultivars of sugarcane, application of pyraclostrobin leads to an increased yield.

ABSTRACT Sweet sorghum culture is an alternative to sugar and ethanol production. With the aim of evaluating herbicide tank-mix selectivity associated or not to sweet sorghum seed treatment with naphthalic anhydride, two experiments with ESX5200 and EJX7C5110 hybrids were performed in red oxisol (clayey) field conditions, in the municipality of Campo Mourão, Paraná state. A randomized block design was used, with 4 x 2 factorial scheme, with four replications. The first factor represented three herbicide associations and a control sample without herbicide, and the second factor was constituted by the absence or presence of seed treatment with naphthalic anhydride (5.0 g kg-1). Herbicide treatments were tank-mixes of atrazine + S-metolachor (2,640 + 480 g ha 1) (pre-emergence); atrazine + S-metolachlor + isoxaflutole (2,640 + 480 + 11.25 g ha-1) (pre-emergence) and atrazine + S-metolachlor (1,500 + 384 g ha-1) (post-emergence). The following characteristics were evaluated: intoxication, plant height, stalk diameter, number of internodes per stalk and plant density, performed 60 days after emergence (DAE); stalk yield and Brix, were evaluated on day 85 DAE. Atrazine + S-metolachlor tank-mix applied in pre or post-emergence did not affect growth, development, yield and stalk quality of the ESX5200 and EJX7C5110 sweet sorghum hybrids. Sweet sorghum seed treatment with naphthalic anhydride provided partial protection against the action of atrazine + s-metolachlor + isoxaflutole tank-mixes, being more evident for the ESX5200 hybrid.

ABSTRACT Castor bean plants are susceptible to aluminum (Al) in the soil, requiring adequate management techniques for their cultivation in acid soils containing high Al levels, as it occurs in tropical regions. This study aimed to assess the Al tolerance of castor bean lines. A randomized block design, in a 2 x 9 factorial scheme, with four replicates, was used. The treatments consisted of presence and absence of Al, as well as nine castor bean lines (CRZ H06, CRZ H11, CRZ H12, CRZ H15, CRZ H17, CRZ H18, CRZ H19, CRZ H22 and FCA). Based on a distribution into quartiles, the lines were divided into two groups. The Al-tolerant group contained the CRZ H06, H11 and H17 lines, while the group susceptible to Al was composed of CRZ H12, H15, H18, H19, H22 and FCA. The FCA and CRZ H17 lines showed the highest growth, when cultivated without Al.

This experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three replications at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur-1701 during the rabi season of 2010 with 25 maize inbred lines. Correlation and path coefficient analysis were done for yield and some other traits. Genotypic variations were observed for ear height and grains/row. The highest broad sense heritability (h2b) was observed for yield/plant followed by ear height and 1000- grain weight. Maximum genetic advance in percentage of mean (GA) was recorded for yield/plant (92.652) and ear height (75.87). The yield/plant showed significant positive genotypic correlation (rg) with cob diameter (0.440) and grains/row (0.265). Significant negative correlation was observed between ear height and yield and also for days to 50% tasseling. The highest direct positive effect was obtained for rows/cob. These studies suggest that cob diameter, row per cob, grains/row and ear height were the most important yield contributing factors and an attempt should, therefore, be made for an effective selection of these traits. AbstractTitanium is one of a plant biostimulators. It stimulates life processes, growth and development, as well as affects physiological and biochemical pathways, often increasing biomass production and enhancing yield. An open field experiment was conducted in the years 2011-2013 in Polanowice, Poland to investigate the effects of titanium foliar fertilization on the growth of timothy grass (Phleum pratenseL.). This single-factor, randomized block design study was performed in four replicates on research plots with the area of 10 m2each. The substrate was black loess soil (chernozem) typical for top class farmland. Titanium fertilizationvialeaf spray was performed with a water solution of Tytanit® at three doses of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 dm3· ha−1. Foliar fertilization with the highest dose of Tytanit® significantly increased seed yield, thousand grain weight and germination capacity. Moreover, the middle dose of Tytanit® (0.4 dm3· ha−1) was enough to observe a positive effect on the sample.

Chromolaena odorata (L.) is a potential compost since it has high biomass and contains calcium, manganese, potassium and nitrogen. The aim of this research was to know the potency of siam weed Chromolaena odorata compost on soil chemical and chili plant performance. The experiment was arranged in factorial randomized block design consisted of two factors and three replications. The first factor was variety of fertilizer (no fertilizer, cow manure, siam weed compost and inorganic fertilizers) and the second one was the tanglefoot (with and without tanglefoot). Overall, the results of study showed that C. odorata compost could increased crop performance when compared with the other fertilizers in terms of number of fruits, fresh/dry weight of fruits, dry weight of crops, and N-total (leaf, stem, root and fruit), though there was no difference in fresh weight of crops among treatments. Furthermore, the effect of siam weed compost was not significantly different on soil chemical if compared with all treatments. This study is likely suggesting that C. odorata compost gives a positive effect to crops performance and soil chemicals. Keywords:  Chili, Chromolaena odorata, compost  fertilizer, tanglefoot

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of topsoil thickness, shading and origin when performing environmental restoration in a degraded pasture area. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with a factorial (3 x 2 x 2) + 2 layout. Treatments consisted of combinations of topsoil origins (forest at early or middle regeneration stages), topsoil thicknesses (10, 20, or 30-cm superficial soil layer), and presence or absence of 70% shading; with two additional control treatments. Surveys on topsoil physical-chemical attributes and flora and soil coverage were conducted. Good correlation was observed between bulk density and total porosity. Vegetation comprised a total of 2,932 individuals of herbaceous, shrub and subshrub plants; 33 species in 11 families and 1 morphospecies were identified. A floristic survey of the tree stratum revealed 235 individuals belonging to 21 species and 14 families, as well as 2 unidentified species. The best natural regeneration index is observed in the 20-cm topsoil layer, where shading exerts a positive influence on the humidity and natural regeneration of the seed bank. Topsoil from middle-stage forest is the most suitable for restoration of degraded pasture areas.

Competition between maize and signalgrass can economically cripple the intercropping by the reduced yield of maize and dry matter content of the forage. In seeking to define plant arrangements which make this system more efficient, this research was held with the objective of assessing the effects of interference of densities of signalgrass (Urochloa Brizantha) on nutrition and on maize grain yield. Two field experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with four replications. Treatments were arranged similarly in both experiments, in a 2 x 4 factorial design, the first factor being the dose of Nicosulfuron herbicide applied (0 and 8 g ha-1) and the second factor being the forage seeding rates (0, 2, 4 and 6 kg of seeds per hectare). The interference of signalgrass reduced foliar nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus content in maize plants intercropped with the forage. Higher values of grain yield were observed with the reduction of the spacing and the application of the recommended herbicide underdose (8 g ha-1). It was concluded that, regardless of the seeding density of U. Brizantha, reducing the maize seeding inter-rows spacing, combined with the application of an underdose of Nicosulfuron, caused a positive effect by reducing the initial forage growth, resulting in less interference of Urochloa brizantha on nutrient uptake by the maize plants and grain yield of the crop.
