The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the blade tip excitation forces represented as the rotordynamic coefficients (stiffness and damping coefficients) in an unshrouded turbine using the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) numerical method. The blade geometrical parameters were based on a SNECMA transonic experimental rig. The simulations were performed by solving the compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations. The multi-frequency elliptical whirling orbit model and an improved mesh deformation method based on the transient analysis were utilized. The effects of operating conditions on the rotordynamic coefficients and the unsteady flow were also found. The results show that the positive direct stiffness, which confirmed the direct force contribution in the tip excitation forces and the cross-coupling stiffness, were dependent on the whirling frequencies. Damping effects were shown to be negligible. The rotational speed, inlet flow angle, eccentric ratio (ER), and mean tip clearance had impacts on the stiffness, and some effects of these variables on the rotordynamic coefficients were found to be frequency dependent. Additionally, increasing the rotor eccentricity and the mean tip clearance led to the nonuniformity of the circumferential pressure distributions.

Experiments are performed on a modern design transonic shroudless low-aspect ratio fan blisk that experienced both subsonic/transonic and supersonic stall-side flutter. High-response flush mounted miniature pressure transducers are utilized to measure the unsteady aerodynamic loading distribution in the tip region of the fan for both flutter regimes, with strain gages utilized to measure the vibratory response at incipient and deep flutter operating conditions. Numerical simulations are performed and compared with the benchmark data using an unsteady three-dimensional nonlinear viscous computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis, with the effects of tip clearance, vibration amplitude, and the number of time steps-per-cycle investigated. The benchmark data are used to guide the validation of the code and establish best practices that ensure accurate flutter predictions.

Parametric studies of recirculating casing treatment were experimentally performed in a subsonic axial flow compressor. The recirculating casing treatment was parameterized with injector throat height, injection position, and circumferential coverage percentage. Eighteen recirculating casing treatments were tested to study the effects on compressor stability and on the compressor overall performance at three blade speeds. The profiles of recirculating casing treatment were optimized to minimize the losses generated by air recirculation. In the experiment, the stalling mass flow rate, total pressure ratio, and adiabatic efficiency of the compressor were measured to study the steady-state effects on the compressor performance of recirculating casing treatments, and static pressure disturbances on the casing wall were monitored to study the influence on stall dynamics. Results indicate that both the compressor stability and overall performance can be improved through recirculating casing treatment with appropriate geometrical parameters for all the test speeds. The influence on stall margin of one geometric parameter often depends on the choice of others, i.e. the interaction effects exist. In general, the recirculating casing treatment with a moderate injector throat and a large circumferential coverage is the optimal choice to enhance compressor stability. The injector of recirculating casing treatment should be placed upstream of the blade tip leading edge and the injector throat height should be lower than four times the rotor tip gap for the benefits of compressor efficiency. At 71% speed, the blade tip loading is decreased through recirculating casing treatment at the operating condition of near peak efficiency and increased near stall. Moreover, the outlet absolute flow angle is reduced in the tip region and enhanced at lower blade spans for both operating conditions. The stall inceptions are not changed with the implementation of recirculating casing treatment for all the test speeds, but the stall patterns are altered at 33% and 53% speeds, i.e. the stall with two cells is detected in the recirculating casing treatment compared with the solid casing with only one stall cell.

This paper discusses the mechanisms of three-dimensional flows and of the associated losses occurring near the tip endwall region of a linear turbine cascade with tip clearance. The clearance gap sizes and the cascade incidences were chosen as the most important variables affecting the mechanisms. Flows close to the endwall and inside the clearance were surveyed in great detail using a micro five-hole pitot tube of 0.6 mm head size. The results gave very detailed information on the mechanisms, such as leakage flow vectors and pressure distributions throughout the clearance. Interaction of leakage flow with the endwall flow and their associated separation lines, effects of gap size and inlet flow angle on loss generation, and skewness of the three-dimensional endwall flows are also discussed.

Abstract The clearance that exists between the casing and turbine blade tips is one of the key drivers of efficiency in gas turbine engines. For this reason, engine manufacturers utilize precise manufacturing techniques and may employ clearance control systems to minimize tip clearances to reduce associated losses. Despite these efforts, turbines typically exhibit some nominal casing ovality or rotor-casing eccentricity, and changes to blade tip clearance during operation commonly occur due to thermal and mechanical stresses. The present study investigates non-axisymmetric tip clearance effects by creating a rotor-casing eccentricity in a one-stage axial test turbine operating in a continuous-duration mode at engine relevant conditions with engine representative hardware. A magnetic levitation bearing system was leveraged to move the turbine shaft to vary the rotor-casing eccentricity without test section disassembly. The results of this study indicate that rotor-casing eccentricity does not affect overall turbine efficiency over the range that was tested, but does locally influence efficiency and the rotor exit flow field. Comparisons of flow angle and secondary flow kinetic energy agreed with previous studies and existing analytical methods, respectively. Collectively, these results indicate that tip clearance can be studied locally on an eccentric rotor.

Three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flow within a linear turbine cascade with tip clearance is analyzed numerically. The governing equations involving the standard k-ε model are solved in the physical component tensor form with a boundary-fitted coordinate system. In the analysis, the blade tip geometry is treated accurately in order to predict the flow through the tip clearance in detail when the blades have large thicknesses. Although the number of grids employed in the present study is not enough because of the limitation of computer storage memory, the computed results show good agreements with the experimental results. Moreover, the results clearly exhibit the locus of minimum pressure on the rear part of the pressure surface at the blade tip.

The relationship between turbomachinery blade circulation and tip clearance vortex circulation measured experimentally is examined using three-dimensional viscous flow computations. It is shown that the clearance vortex circulation one would measure is dependent on the placement of the fluid contour around which the circulation measurement is taken. Radial transport of vorticity results in the magnitude of the measured clearance vortex circulation generally being less than the blade circulation. For compressors, radial transport of vorticity shed from the blade tip in proximity to the endwall is the principal contributor to the discrepancy between the measured vortex circulation and blade circulation. Further, diffusion of vorticity shed at the blade tip toward the endwall makes it impossible in most practical cases to construct a fluid contour around the vortex that encloses all, and only, the vorticity shed from the blade tip. One should thus not expect agreement between measured tip clearance vortex circulation and circulation around the blade.

Numerical investigations on the rotordynamic characteristics of a typical hole-pattern seal using transient three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) solution and the periodic circular orbit model were conducted in this work. The unsteady solutions combined with mesh deformation method were utilized to solve the three-dimensional RANS equations and obtain the transient reaction forces on a typical hole-pattern seal rotor at five different excitation frequencies. The relation between the periodic reaction forces and frequency dependent rotordynamic coefficients of the hole-pattern seal was obtained by considering the rotor with a periodic circular orbit (including forward orbit and backward orbit) of the seal center. The rotordynamic coefficients of the hole-pattern seal were then solved based on the obtained unsteady reaction forces and presented numerical method. Compared with the experimental data, the predicted rotordynamic coefficients of the hole-pattern seal are more agreeable with the experiment than that of the ISO-temperature (ISOT) bulk flow analysis and numerical approach with one-direction-shaking model. Furthermore, the unsteady leakage flow characteristics in the hole-pattern seal were also illustrated and discussed in detail.

The 3-D viscous flowfield in the rotor passage of a single-stage turbine, including the tip-leakage flow, is computed using a Navier-Stokes procedure. A grid-generation code has been developed to obtain embedded H grids inside the rotor tip gap. The blade tip geometry is accurately modeled without any “pinching”. Chien’s low-Reynolds-number k-ε model is employed for turbulence closure. Both the mean-flow and turbulence transport equations are integrated in time using a four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme. The computational results for the entire turbine rotor flow, particularly the tip-leakage flow and the secondary flows, are interpreted and compared with available data. The predictions for major features of the flowfield are found to be in good agreement with the data. Complicated interactions between the tip-clearance flows and the secondary flows are examined in detail. The effects of endwall rotation on the development and interaction of secondary and tip-leakage vortices are also analyzed.

The concept of swept blades for a transonic or supersonic compressor was reconsidered by Wennerstrom in the early 1980s. Several transonic rotors designed with swept blades have shown very good aerodynamic efficiency. The improved performance of the rotor is believed to be due to reduced shock strength near the shroud and better distribution of secondary flows. A three-dimensional flowfield inside a transonic rotor with swept blades is analyzed in detail experimentally and numerically. A Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation is solved for the flow inside the rotor. The numerical solution is based on a high-order upwinding relaxation scheme, and a two-equation turbulence model with a low Reynolds number modification is used for the turbulence modeling. To predict flows near the shroud properly, the tip-clearance flow also must be properly calculated. The numerical results at three different operating conditions agree well with the available experimental data and reveal various interesting aspects of shock structure inside the rotor.
