Chemically synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) involve the generation of toxic products, which narrowed its biological application. Hence, we have developed a one-pot, green method for CuONP production employing the leaf extract of Cymbopogon citratus (CLE). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis confirmed the capping of CuONPs by CLE esters (CLE-CuONPs). Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) showed phenolics, sugars, and proteins mediated nucleation and stability of CLE-CuONPs. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed CLE-CuONPs between 11.4 to 14.5 nm. Staphylococcus aureus-1 (MRSA-1), Staphylococcus aureus-2 (MSSA-2) exposed to CLE-CuONPs (1500 µg/mL) showed 51.4%, 32.41% survival, while Escherichia coli-336 (E. coli-336) exposed to 1000 µg/mL CLE-CuONPs showed 45.27% survival. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of CLE-CuONPs treated E. coli-336, MSSA-2 and MRSA-1 showed morphological deformations. The biofilm production by E. coli-336 and MRSA-1 also declined to 33.0 ± 3.2% and 49.0 ± 3.1% at 2000 µg/mL of CLE-CuONPs. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) showed 22.80 ± 2.6%, 19.2 ± 4.2%, and 16.2 ± 3.6% accumulation of Cu2+ in E. coli-336, MSSA-2, and MRSA-1. Overall, the data exhibited excellent antibacterial and antibiofilm efficacies of esters functionalized CLE-CuONPs, indicating its putative application as a novel nano-antibiotic against multi drug resistance (MDR) pathogenic clinical isolates.

The use of different available chlorine concentrations (ACCs) of slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW; 0.5 to 30 mg/liter), different treatment times, and different temperatures for inactivating Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Staphylococcus aureus was evaluated. The morphology of both pathogens also was analyzed with transmission electron microscopy. A 3-min treatment with SAEW (pH 6.0 to 6.5) at ACCs of 2 mg/liter for E. coli O157:H7 and 8 mg/liter for S. aureus resulted in 100% inactivation of two cultures (7.92- to 8.75-log reduction) at 25°C. The bactericidal activity of SAEW was independent of the treatment time and temperature at a higher ACC (P > 0.05). E. coli O157:H7 was much more sensitive than S. aureus to SAEW. The morphological damage to E. coli O157:H7 cells by SAEW was significantly greater than that to S. aureus cells. At an ACC as high as 30 mg/liter, E. coli O157:H7 cells were damaged, but S. aureus cells retained their structure and no cell wall damage or shrinkage was observed. SAEW with a near neutral pH may be a promising disinfectant for inactivation of foodborne pathogens.

Chronic pyelonephritis is one of the most common diseases of the kidney and accounts for a sizeable number of cases of renal insufficiency in man, however its pathogenesis requires further elucidation. Transmission electron microscopy may serve as a uniquely effective means of observing details of the nature of this disease. The present paper describes preliminary results of an ultrastructural study of chronic pyelonephritis in Macaca arctoides (stumptail monkey). The infection was induced in these experiments in a retrograde fashion by means of a unilateral catheterization of the left ureter whereby an innoculum of 10 cc of broth containing approximately 2 billion E. coli per cc and radio-opaque dye were injected under pressure (mimicing vesico-ureteric reflux).

While light microscopy has been used to image sub-micron objects, numerous problems with diffraction-limitations often preclude extraction of useful information. Using conventional dark-field and phase contrast light microscopy coupled with image processing, we have studied the following objects: (a) polystyrene beads (88nm, 264nm, and 557mn); (b) frustules of the diatom, Pleurosigma angulatum, and the T-4 bacteriophage attached to its host, E. coli or free in the medium. Equivalent images of the same areas of polystyrene beads and T-4 bacteriophages were produced using transmission electron microscopy. For light microscopy, we used a Zeiss universal microscope. For phase contrast observations a 100X Neofluar objective (N.A.=1.3) was applied. With dark-field, a 100X planachromat objective (N.A.=1.25) in combination with an ultra-condenser (N.A.=1.25) was employed. An intermediate magnifier (Optivar) was available to conveniently give magnification settings of 1.25, 1.6, and 2.0. The image was projected onto the back focal plane of a film or television camera with a Carl Zeiss Jena 18X Compens ocular.

Introduction: In this project, the growth and volatile metabolites profiles of Escherichia coli (E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus were monitored under the influence of silver base chemical, nanoparticle and ultra-highly diluted compounds. Materials & Methods: The treatments were done for 12000 life cycles using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as well as ultra-highly diluted Argentum nitricum (Arg-n). Volatile organic metabolites analysis was performed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results indicated that AgNPs treatment made the bacteria resistant and adapted to growth in the nanoparticle condition. The use of ultra-highly diluted Arg-n initially increased growth but it decreased later. Also, with the continuous usage of these materials, no more bacterial growth was observed. Results: The most important compounds produced by E. coli are Acetophenone, Octyl acetate, Styrene, 1,8-cineole, 4-t-butyl-2-(1-methyl-2-nitroethyl)cyclohexane, hexadecane and 2-Undecanol. The main compounds derived from S. aureus are Acetophenone,1,8-cineole, Benzaldehyde, 2-Hexan-1-ol, Tridecanol, Dimethyl Octenal and tetradecane. Acetophenone and 1,8-cineole were common and produced by both organisms. Conclusion: Based on the origin of the produced volatiles, main volatiles percentage of untreated sample is hydrocarbon (>50%), while bacteria treatments convert the ratio in to aldehydes, ketones and alcohols in the case of AgNPs, (>80%) and aldehydes, ketones and terpenes in the case of Arg-n (>70%).

Mn3O4nanoparticle/graphene sheet (GM) composites were synthesized via a one-pot and low-cost solvothermal process in an ethanol solution. The as-prepared materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Results showed that the nanosized Mn3O4particles had tetragonal hausmannite structure and were successfully loaded on the graphene sheets. Moreover, the electrochemical performances of GM composites produced by different mass percents of Mn2+/graphite oxide (GO) were evaluated by means of cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge studies. The composite prepared with Mn2+/GO mass percent of 10 : 90 showed a high specific capacitance of 245 F/g at 5 mV/s in the 6 M KOH solution and better long-term stability along with 81% of its initial capacitance after 1200 cycles at 0.5 A/g.

Manipulation of adding sequences have been found to influence the reaction rate, thus made it easier to produced controllable Ni nanoparticles. Hot-injection approach shown capability to significantly reduce the production time of Ni nanoparticles compared to the conventional one-pot synthesis. With minor modification on conventional polyol method, narrow, monodispersed and highly yield spherical nickel (Ni) nanoparticles were successfully produced at synthesis temperature of 60°C. Three mixing methods were investigated to study its efficiency towards producing rapid and narrower size distribution of Ni nanoparticles. Reduction processes were proposed each of the method. As-synthesized Ni nanoparticles were characterized with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to analyze the size, morphology and interaction of reactants. Fine particles size distribution revealed that when hydrazine was first heated, reaction rate improved tremendously.

In this research, the photocatalytic degradation of cypermethrin using iron-titanium dioxide (Fe-TiO2) nanoparticles supported in a biomaterial was evaluated. The nanoparticles of TiO2 were synthesized by the green chemistry method assisted by ultrasound and doped by chemical impregnation using Fe+3:Ti molar ratios of 0, 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1 to make efficient use of direct sunlight ( λ > 310 nm). All nanoparticles were immobilized on the surface of coconut spathe ( Cocos nucifera). The degradation was carried out at room temperature and natural pH in a flat plate solar reactor, on which the composite material was subjected. The concentration of cypermethrin was determined after 12,000 J m−2 of accumulated radiation from gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and the resulting material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area. The best results were achieved with the use of Evonik TiO2 P-25, Fe:Ti = 0 and Fe:Ti = 0.05 in suspension, with percentages of degradation of cypermethrin of 99.84%, 99.62%, and 100%, respectively. However, the materials supported on the biomaterial of coconut allowed to reach degradation percentages higher than 80%, with the advantage that it minimizes operating costs, as they are not necessarily filtering or centrifuging processes to separate the catalyst.

To the best of our knowledge, this report presents, for the first time, the schematic of the possible chemical reaction for a one-pot synthesis of Zn0.5Cd0.5Se alloy quantum dots (QDs) in the presence of low/high oleylamine (OLA) contents. For high OLA contents, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results showed that the average size of Zn0.5Cd0.5Se increases significantly from 4 to 9 nm with an increasing OLA content from 4 to 10 mL. First, [Zn(OAc)2]–OLA complex can be formed by a reaction between Zn(OAc)2 and OLA. Then, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) data confirmed that ZnO is formed by thermal decomposition of the [Zn(OAc)2]–OLA complex. The results indicated that ZnO grew on the Zn0.5Cd0.5Se surface, thus increasing the particle size. For low OLA contents, HRTEM images were used to estimate the average sizes of the Zn0.5Cd0.5Se alloy QDs, which were approximately 8, 6, and 4 nm with OLA loadings of 0, 2, and 4 mL, respectively. We found that Zn(OAc)2 and OLA could form a [Zn(OAc)2]–OLA complex, which inhibited the growth of the Zn0.5Cd0.5Se alloy QDs, due to the decreasing reaction between Zn(oleic acid)2 and Se2−, which led to a decrease in particle size.
