We investigated the intervention effect of training using a feedback-type tactile discrimination system on sensorimotor dysfunction of the hand after a stroke. A human male subject with sensorimotor dysfunction in his left hand after a stroke was asked to perform peg manipulation practice, a building block stacking task, and a material identification task for 10 min each for six weeks. During the activities, a tactile discrimination feedback system was used. The system is a device that detects the vibration information generated when touching an object with a hand and that feeds back the captured information in real time as vibration information. After the intervention, in addition to the reorganization of the sensorimotor areas, the deep sensation, sense of agency, numbness, amount of use, and quality of the left-hand movement improved. Our results suggest that training with the use of a feedback system could be a new form of rehabilitation for sensorimotor dysfunction of the hand.

Background/Aims: Recent evidence shows that early dementia patients have deficits in manual reaching tasks. It is important to understand the impact of these functional disabilities on their quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate if there is an association between manual reaching and measures of (instrumental) activities of daily living (IADL) in a group of patients with cognitive complaints. Methods: The manual reaching performance of 27 patients was assessed in detail with eye and hand tracking devices. Patients were divided into three groups based on self-reported loss of IADL function. Parameters describing hand response and movement times were compared between groups. Results: Patients with loss of IADL function in ≥1 domain had delayed hand response and hand movement times towards visible targets compared to patients with no loss of IADL function. Conclusion: Delays in manual reaching movements are related to the degree of loss of IADL function in early dementia patients.

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a novel chest compression (CC) smart-ring-based feedback system in a manikin simulation. In this randomized, crossover, controlled study, we evaluated the effect of smart-ring CC feedback on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The learnability and usability of the tool were evaluated with the System Usability Scale (SUS). Participants were divided into two groups and each performed CCs with and without feedback 2 weeks apart, using different orders. The primary outcome was compression depth; the proportion of accurate-depth (5–6 cm) CCs, CC rate, and the proportion of complete CCs (≤1 cm of residual leaning) were assessed additionally. The feedback group and the non-feedback group showed significant differences in compression depth (52.1 (46.3–54.8) vs. 47.1 (40.5–49.9) mm, p = 0.021). The proportion of accurate-depth CCs was significantly higher in the interventional than in the control condition (88.7 (30.0–99.1) vs. 22.6 (0.0–58.5%), p = 0.033). The mean SUS score was 83.9 ± 8.7 points. The acceptability ranges were ‘acceptable’, and the adjective rating was ‘excellent’. CCs with smart-ring feedback could help achieve the ideal range of depth during CPR. The smart-ring may be a valuable source of CPR feedback.

This study aimed to evaluate the current status of the internship assessment in medical colleges of Bangladesh. Internship acts as the pathway from being a medical student to becoming a registered doctor. Hence, a rigorous and robust internship leads to producing better doctor and in turn better healthcare. Thus, proper assessment is necessary to ensure the quality of the future medical practitioners. Unfortunately, no study has been done in Bangladesh related to this context. A cross-sectional descriptive study with pre-tested self-administered questionnaires covering study place and population and factors relevant to intern assessment (assessment after each major discipline completion, assessment techniques, and feedback) was performed. The study was carried out in 8 medical colleges (4 public and 4 non-government; 4 inside Dhaka and 4 outside). 300 completed questionnaires (250 interns, 50 supervisors) were analyzed. All the collected data were analyzed and presented with SPSS v 19.0 software. Results revealed that there was no assessment present after completion of major placement rotation (about 54% interns and 24% teachers). Furthermore, only logbook was signed as the prevailing assessment technique (more than 66% interns and 72% doctors). Moreover, assessment feedback system was not fully functional (48.7% respondent views). Hence, the overall scenario is shabby and poses questions on our future doctors' skill set.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Education Vol.8(1) 2017: 14-17

Automatic cell segmentation has various applications in cytometry, and while the nucleus is often very distinct and easy to identify, the cytoplasm provides a lot more challenge. A new combination of image analysis algorithms for segmentation of cells imaged by fluorescence microscopy is presented. The algorithm consists of an image pre‐processing step, a general segmentation and merging step followed by a segmentation quality measurement. The quality measurement consists of a statistical analysis of a number of shape descriptive features. Objects that have features that differ to that of correctly segmented single cells can be further processed by a splitting step. By statistical analysis we therefore get a feedback system for separation of clustered cells. After the segmentation is completed, the quality of the final segmentation is evaluated. By training the algorithm on a representative set of training images, the algorithm is made fully automatic for subsequent images created under similar conditions. Automatic cytoplasm segmentation was tested on CHO‐cells stained with calcein. The fully automatic method showed between 89% and 97% correct segmentation as compared to manual segmentation.

Quality of branch industry andragogy (education of adults) has become an issue of importance, taking into account the necessity of lifelong and lifewide learning (LLL) and the essentiality of smart specializations. Due the COVID-19 pandemic, quality of on-line branch industry andragogical activities may prove to be a challenge. The main aim of the article is to analyze and systematize the quality areas concerning on-line branch industry andragogical activities, enabling verification of the assumed quality areas (i.e. means of communication/education/socialization, added value, verification of achievements by the user and feedback type for the andragogical activities organizer). The approach applied in the article is of descriptive-empirical nature. Research methods include induction, deduction and literature studies (the method of critical and comparative analysis was used). The article concludes with a suggestion of research on quality attributes, especially demanded in Poland.

The teaching engagement scale (TES) is a 360° evaluation and feedback system designed to identify areas for professional development towards improving the student learning experience. It incorporates two unique approaches: (1) it measures engagement instead of module content satisfaction, and (2) it incorporates the feedback from students, the self (reflection), peer and superior. This innovative approach to teaching feedback produces a balanced, specific, and data-driven identification of strengths and areas of improvement that the teacher can use for effective professional development. When professional development is effective, it leads to higher quality teaching, which is vital for student success. As a result of the use of the TES, Taylor's University has seen an improvement in the quality of engagement over a short period of time.

A previous investigation, reported at the Winter Meeting 1985, showed significant effects of growth promoters on carcass composition and on the eating quality of sirloin steaks. The growth promoters investigated factorially were (a) hormonal implants (heifers, Zeranol; steers, Zeranol + Trembolone acetate), (b) feed additive (Avotan) and (c) fishmeal. The experiment was repeated during the winter of 1984/85, with the eating quality investigation expanded to cover some 192 households, using sirloin steaks from all 64 cattle involved in the investigation. In addition, the rate of carcass cooling in the left-hand side of each animal was measured using electronic probe thermometers placed in the longissimus dorsi immediately after slaughter. This data was used to test the hypothesis that rate of carcass cooling was negatively related to the fat content of the carcass and with overall eating quality due to the effects of cold shortening.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo analisar os fatores humanos e condições de trabalho nas operações de implantação florestal. A coleta dos dados ocorreu por meio de entrevistas realizadas com 48 trabalhadores florestais das atividades de coveamento, plantio e adubação. Os resultados indicaram que a média de idade dos trabalhadores foi de 31,7 anos, estatura de 170,1 cm e peso de 74,2 kg; 77,9% eram de origem rural, 58,9% eram casados e 77,5% não concluíram o Ensino Fundamental. Quanto ao tempo de serviço na empresa, a média foi de 30,4 meses e o tempo médio de experiência na função foi de 23,0 meses. Em relação à lateralidade, 58,3% dos trabalhadores da atividade de coveamento eram destros e 41,7% eram canhotos, o que podendo influenciar na adaptação dos trabalhadores para a execução da operação. A elevada incidência de dores nas pernas (40,7%) e nas costas (30,3%) foi afirmada pelos trabalhadores do coveamento como sendo causada pelo elevado peso do equipamento. O capacete com viseira foi apontado pelos trabalhadores como causa de dores de cabeça e dificuldade de visão, e as luvas como causa de umedecimento das mãos e perda de sensibilidade, situações que podem dificultar o manuseio do perfurador de solo no trabalho.Palavras-chave: Implantação florestal; fatores humanos; qualidade de vida. AbstractHuman factors and work conditions analysis in forest planting operations. The aim of this research was to analyze human factors and work conditions in forest planting operations. Data were collected by interviews with 48 workers of hole-digging, planting and fertilizing activities. The results indicated that the workers average age was 31.7 years, height 170.1 cm and body weight 74.2 Kg. 77.9% were of rural origin, 58.9% were married and 77.5% did not reach basic schooling. The average job time in the company was 30.4 months and the average time of activity experience was 23.0 months. Most (58.3%) of the workers of hole-digging were dexterous and 41.7% were left-hand, which may influence the adaptation of workers in operation of the equipment. The high incidence of leg (40.7%) and back pain (30.3%) was affirmed by the workers of hole-digging as caused by the high weight of the equipment. The helmet with visor was appointed by workers as cause of headaches and vision difficulty and gloves were identified as cause to wet hands and hardly handling punch land in work.Keywords: Forest planting; human factors; quality of life.

PurposeOnycholysis and skin toxicity occur in approximately 30% of patients treated with docetaxel. We investigated the efficacy and safety of an Elasto-Gel (84400 APT Cedex, Akromed, France) frozen glove (FG) for the prevention of docetaxel-induced onycholysis and skin toxicity.Patients and MethodsPatients receiving docetaxel 75 mg/m2alone or in combination chemotherapy were eligible for this case-control study. Each patient wore an FG for a total of 90 minutes on the right hand. The left hand was not protected and acted as the control. Onycholysis and skin toxicity were assessed at each cycle by National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria and documented by photography. Wilcoxon matched-pairs rank test was used.ResultsBetween August 2002 and September 2003, 45 patients were evaluated. Onycholysis and skin toxicity were significantly lower in the FG-protected hand compared with the control hand (P = .0001). Onycholysis was grade (G) 0 in 89% v 49% and G1 to 2 in 11% v 51% for the FG-protected hand and the control hand, respectively. Skin toxicity was G0 in 73% v 41% and G1 to 2 in 27% v 59% for the FG-protected and the control hand, respectively. Median time to nail and skin toxicity occurrence was not significantly different between the FG-protected and the control hand, respectively (106 v 58 days for nail toxicity; 57 v 58 days for skin toxicity). Five patients (11%) experienced discomfort due to cold intolerance.ConclusionFG significantly reduces the nail and skin toxicity associated with docetaxel and provides a new tool in supportive care management to improve a patient's quality of life.
