Sleep quality is one of the domains of sleep. Having adequate quality sleep is defined as one’s “feeling fresh” after waking-up. Inadequate sleep quality results in sleep insufficiency producing a variety of symptoms and signs. The central nervous system is affected the most in children, although other system too may be involved. Several factors affect sleep quality in children including genetics, sleep habits, medical problems, parents/caregiver factors, screen time and the child’s environment. These factors are inter-related and dynamic. The outcome of sleep insufficiency is many involving neurocognitive and neurobehavior, mood and emotional issues and specific conditions, like pulmonary hypertension, cor pulmonale and obesity. Management should start with proper history taking to identify the multifaceted nature of the condition. Treatment is planned cognizant of the age of the patient and the associated etiological factors, and should involve both the children and their parents.

Thermal comfort is crucial in satisfaction and maintaining quality sleep for occupants. In this study, we investigated the comfort temperature in the bedroom at night and sleep quality for Indonesian students during summer and winter. Eighteen male Indonesian students aged 29 ± 4 years participated in this study. The participants had stayed in Japan for about six months. We evaluated the sleep parameters using actigraphy performed during summer and winter. All participants completed the survey regarding thermal sensation, physical conditions, and subjective sleepiness before sleep. The temperature and relative humidity of participants’ bedrooms were also measured. We found that the duration on the bed during winter was significantly longer than that during summer. However, sleeping efficiency during winter was significantly worse than that during summer. The bedroom temperature of the participants was in the range of comfort temperature in Indonesia. With the average bedroom air temperature of 22.2 °C, most of the participants still preferred “warm” and felt “slightly comfortable” during winter. The average comfort temperature each season calculated using the Griffiths method was 28.1 °C during summer and 23.5 °C during winter. In conclusion, differences in adaptive action affect bedroom thermal conditions. Furthermore, habits encourage the sleep performance of Indonesian students.

PurposeThe purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of air mattress pressure on sleep quality.Design/methodology/approachTen young healthy males participated in all hard surface [AH], shoulder soft [SS] and shoulder and hip soft mattress [SHS] conditions. The surface pressure for SS and SHS were set at their preferred levels.FindingsThe results showed that sleep efficiencies were over 95% for all the three conditions; there were no significant differences in individual sleep variables among the three conditions, but overall sleep quality was better for SS than AH (p = 0.065); heart rates during sleep was greater for AH than the other two conditions (p < 0.1); and a stronger relationship between clothing and bed microclimate humidity were found for SS and SHS than that for AH.Research limitations/implicationsThese results indicated that the both pressure relief air mattresses that were set at their own preferred levels provided high quality sleep with no marked differences.Practical implicationsAir pressure relief mattresses can improve sleep quality of healthy individuals during sleep at night. The results can be used to understand appropriate pressure distribution on surface mattress according to body region, and also to develop algorithms to provide optimum sleep using mattresses with surface pressure control by body region.Originality/valueThe present study found that the shoulder and/or hip pressure relief air mattresses that were set at their own preferred levels provided high quality sleep with no marked differences.

Sleep is an essential need that must be met, especially in the development phase since brain and body development will occur during sleep. Thus, sleep disturbance is a problem that will cause adverse effects on growth and development, especially for babies. Sleep quality for babies can be improved by providing baby massage on a regular basis. The purpose of this study was to prove whether there were differences in sleep quality before and after the massage in babies aged 3-4 months in Gelatik and Nuri IHC (Integrated Health Center) of Tanjungunggat Village of Tanjungpinang Municipality. Design: This was a Quasi Experiment study with a pretest-posttest method. The sample consisted of 17 respondents selected by purposive sampling technique. The statistical test used in this study was a dependent t-test with a significance level of 0.05.Result: The results showed that there was no significant difference between baby sleep duration before and after the massage (p = 0.414). However, there was significant difference between the frequency of waking up before and after the massage (p = 0.001) and there was a significant difference between the duration of waking up before and after the massage (p = 0.046. Discuss: Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that mothers should improve their knowledge on the importance of baby massage provided by health professionals and the health professionals should provide and demonstrate clear, complete and sustained information to the mothers and other related parties surrounding the IHC.

A good high-quality of sleep and it's have an effect on in daily existence of both the healthful and sick character turns into one of the most important cognizance of problem. Aims: The study aimed to assess the Quality of Sleep and Perceived Sleep Distractors among patients. Methods: Non-Experimental descriptive research design was conducted among 135 patients through convenient sampling technique. Modied Sleep quality Scale and Structured Perceived Sleep Distractors Perfoma was used. Results: Showed (27.4%) of the patients had poor quality of sleep, most of the patients (47.4%) were having fair quality of sleep. Most of the patients (52.6%) were having severe distractions while sleeping, less than half (44.4%) were having moderate level of distractions while sleeping only (3.0%) perceived very severe distraction during hospital stay. There was a moderate positive relationship between Quality of Sleep and Perceived Sleep Distractors NS Score(r=0.113, p=0.19 ). Further the results also indicated that quality of sleep is only associated with Patient admitted in 2 2 (department) (χ = 30.652, p=0.01) whereas perceived sleep distractors is associated with Education status (χ = 17.280, 2 2 p=0.02), Duration of Hospitalization (χ = 45.425, p=0.00), Patient admitted in (department) (χ = 28.066, p=0.03).Conclusion: The study concludes that there is a need to identify factors responsible that hinders good quality sleep among patients admitted in hospital as well as the sleep quality can be enhanced by decreasing the sleep distractors and thus it can be helpful in the early recovery of the patients

Subjective sleep quality has been recognized as a valuable indicator of health and quality of life. This exploratory and descriptive study aimed at describing habitual sleep quality of women suffering from gynecological and breast cancer and comparing habitual versus sleep quality during hospitalization. Twenty-five women admitted in hospital for clinical treatment of cancer completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) within 72 hours after admission and again just before discharge. Fifty-two percent of subjects reported habitual bad sleep quality, and this proportion increased to 80% of subjects during hospital stay. Subjects indicated the following most frequent causes of night sleep disturbance: need to go to the toilet, waking up early and receiving nursing care during the night. Results point to the importance of including careful assessment of sleep quality and environment in nursing care planning for oncology patients, mainly during hospitalization.

Abstract Study Objectives The present research examines the relationship between people’s frequent involvement in an activity they like and find important (i.e., a passion) and the quality of their sleep. Research on the dualistic model of passion has widely documented the relationship between individuals’ type of passion—harmonious versus obsessive—and the quality of their mental and physical health. However, research has yet to examine the relationship between passion and sleep quality. Building on prior research has shown that obsessive (vs harmonious) passion is related to depressive mood symptoms—an important factor associated with sleep problems—we hypothesized that obsessive passion would be associated with overall worse sleep quality, whereas harmonious passion would predict better sleep quality. Methods A sample of 1,506 Americans filled out an online questionnaire on sleep habits and passion. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Hierarchical linear regressions and mediation analyses were carried out with results confirming our hypotheses. Results Obsessive passion for an activity was associated with worse sleep quality, whereas harmonious passion was associated with better sleep quality, adjusting for demographics, the type of passionate activity and its self-reported importance, alcohol and tobacco consumption, BMI, self-reported health, and diagnosed health conditions. The relationship between both types of passion and sleep quality was mediated by depressive mood symptoms. Conclusions Our study presents evidence of a strong relationship between sleep quality and passion, opening the door for future research to create new interventions to improve people’s sleep and, consequently, their well-being.

Poor sleep is a relatively common condition with possibly serious adverse health consequences. Lack of sleep affects the endocrine, immune, and nervous systems. In Cyprus, there is no information about the quality of sleep in the population. The goal of this study was to assess the quality of sleep in the Cypriot population and evaluate its association with multimorbidity. A representative sample of the adult population of Cyprus was selected in 2018–2019 among the five government-controlled municipalities of the Republic of Cyprus using stratified sampling. Data on sleep quality as well as on the presence of chronic, clinical, and mental health conditions were collected using a validated questionnaire. Diseases were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10). A total of 1,140 Cypriot men and women over 18-years of age (range: 18–94) participated in the study. The median Pittsburgh sleep quality index score of the participants was 5 (first quartile = 3, third quartile = 7) with the maximum score being 17, which suggests that the Cypriot population has a relatively good quality of sleep overall, although, almost one-third of the study population had a poor quality of sleep. Women, residents of Paphos, and married people had a poorer quality of sleep (p &lt; 0.05). Having a poor quality of sleep was associated with higher odds of multimorbidity (OR = 2.21, 95% CI: 1.55, 3.16), even after adjusting for demographics, socioeconomic, and lifestyle factors. Adopting good sleep habits could be beneficial and would potentially help reduce the risk of multimorbidity. Public health guidelines regarding the importance of sleep and its association with multimorbidity should be considered.

Introduction: According to the Brazilian Association of Sleep Medicine, the activities of the present day have hampered the quality and time of sleep, causing damage to the Central Nervous System and releasing substances directly related to stress, thus the metabolism changes in the absence of a few hours of sleep by night they were equated with that of an old man. Objective: To verify the influence of classic (relaxing) body massage associated with atherapy in sleep quality and stress in university teachers. Methodology: An exploratory and qualitative study was carried out, with a sample of 14 university teachers, through questionnaires and massage practices with association of the essential oils of Olíbano and Cedro, controlled the results with oximeter and Power Lab. Results: Although there was no difference it is worth noting that cedar oil reduced in a manner considered the Heart Rate of the volunteers. All volunteers reported that there was improvement in sleep quality regarding the night of the day of receiving the massage, such as decreased pain, constant sleep at night, leading us to confirm the great effect that relaxing massage exerts on the individual. Conclusion: Although the inhalation results of essential oils have not given statistical differences, we can conclude that this procedure is effective in improving stress and gradually improving the quality of sleep.
