The challenges of modern civilization resulted in the premature biological and psychological aging of professionals of working age. This phenomenon raises both medical and psychological problems associated with personality factors that affect psychobiological maturity and the rate of aging. The influence of religiosity and spirituality on biopsychological age remains the least studied area of psychology. Progress in this area will help to identify the components of religiosity—predictors of the aging rate of professionals. The sample included 295 people (148 women) aged 24 to 54 years (average age 31.7 years) and consisted of Christians (67.12%), Muslims (5.76%), Buddhists, deists, Shintoists, etc., (7.79%) and atheists (17.29%). The average work experience was 9 years. Using correlation analysis and methods of multivariate linear regression and t-test for independent samples, we found that the religiosity of professionals increases with natural aging and deterioration of their physical condition and does not depend on gender. Religiosity to a greater extent affects psychological age, the indicator of the psychobiological maturity of a professional and, to a lesser extent, biological age. Most of the indicators of religiosity are inherent in a person who is more mature in psychobiological terms. The biological age of professionals increases due to asthenic experiences, while gaining faith in God, unusual religious experiences and the existential meaning of life can reduce it. An increase in the spirituality of professionals is associated with a slowdown in the rate of biological aging.

Biological age and rates of aging of patients with vibration disease and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss were studied. The biological age of patients exceeded the calendar age by an average of 7.36±0.36 years and the proper biological age by 10.79±0.72 years. The rate of biological aging of the examined patients was 1.14±0.08 times higher than the rate of aging of their healthy peers.

As healthspan and lifespan research breakthroughs have become more commonplace, the need for valid, practical markers of biological age is becoming increasingly paramount. The accessibility and affordability of biological age predictors that can reveal information about mortality and morbidity risk, as well as remaining years of life, has profound clinical and research implications. In this review, we examine 5 groups of aging biomarkers capable of providing accurate biological age estimations. The unique capabilities of these biomarkers have far reaching implications for the testing of both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions designed to slow or reverse biological aging. Additionally, the enhanced validity and availability of these tools may have increasingly relevant clinical value. The authors of this review explore those implications, with an emphasis on lifestyle modification research, and provide an overview of the current evidence regarding 5 biological age predictor categories: Telomere length, composite biomarkers, DNA methylation “epigenetic clocks,” transcriptional predictors of biological age, and functional age predictors.

Intervening in aging processes is hypothesized to extend healthy years of life and treat age-related disease, thereby providing great benefit to society. However, the ability to measure the biological aging process in individuals, which is necessary to test for efficacy of these interventions, remains largely inaccessible to the general public. Here we used NHANES physical activity accelerometer data from a wearable device and machine-learning algorithms to derive biological age predictions for individuals based on their movement patterns. We found that accelerated biological aging from our “MoveAge” predictor is associated with higher all-cause mortality. We further searched for nutritional or pharmacological compounds that associate with decelerated aging according to our model. A number of nutritional components peak in their association to decelerated aging later in life, including fiber, magnesium, and vitamin E. We additionally identified one FDA-approved drug associated with decelerated biological aging: the alpha-blocker doxazosin. We show that doxazosin extends healthspan and lifespan in C. elegans. Our work demonstrates how a biological aging score based on relative mobility can be accessible to the wider public and can potentially be used to identify and determine efficacy of geroprotective interventions.

AbstractBackgroundExcessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of aging-related comorbidities and mortality. Assessing the impact of alcohol consumption on biological age is important for clinical decision-making and prevention. Evidence shows that alcohol alters monocyte function, and age is associated with DNA methylome and transcriptomic changes among monocytes. However, no monocyte-based epigenetic clock is currently available. In this study, we developed a new monocyte-based DNA methylation clock (MonoDNAmAge) by using elastic net regularization. The MonoDNAmAge was validated by benchmarking using epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) in HIV infection. Using MonoDNAmAge clock as well as four established clocks (i.e., HorvathDNAmAge, HannumDNAmAge, PhenoDNAmAge, GrimDNAmAge), we then evaluated the effect of alcohol consumption on biological aging in three independent cohorts (N=2,242).ResultsMonoDNAmAge, comprised of 186 CpG sites, was highly correlated with chronological age (rtraining=0.96, p<2.20E-16; rtesting=0.86, p=1.55E-141). The MonoDNAmAge clock predicted an approximately 10-year age acceleration from HIV infection in two cohorts. Quadratic regression analysis showed a nonlinear relationship between MonoDNAmAge and alcohol consumption in the Yale Stress Center Community Study (YSCCS, pmodel=4.55E-08, px2 =7.80E-08) and in the Veteran Aging Cohort Study (VACS, pmodel=1.85E-02, px2 =3.46E-02). MonoDNAmAge and light alcohol consumption showed a negative linear relationship in the Women’s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS, β=-2.63, px=2.82E-06). Heavy consumption increased EAAMonoDNAmAge up to 1.60 years in the VACS while light consumption decreased EAAMonoDNAmAge to 2.66 years in the WIHS. These results were corroborated by the four established epigenetic clocks.ConclusionsWe observed a nonlinear effect of alcohol consumption on epigenetic age that is estimated by a novel monocyte-based “clock” in three distinct cohorts, highlighting the complex effects of alcohol consumption on biological age.

Abstract Background Biological age (BA) can be estimated by phenotypes and is useful for predicting lifespan and healthspan. Levine et al. proposed a PhenoAge and a BioAge to measure BA. Although there have been studies investigating the genetic predisposition to BA acceleration in Europeans, little has been known regarding this topic in Asians. Methods I here estimated PhenoAgeAccel (age-adjusted PhenoAge) and BioAgeAccel (age-adjusted BioAge) of 94,443 Taiwan Biobank (TWB) participants, wherein 25,460 TWB1 subjects formed a discovery cohort and 68,983 TWB2 individuals constructed a replication cohort. Lifestyle factors and genetic variants associated with PhenoAgeAccel and BioAgeAccel were investigated through regression analysis and a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Results A unit (kg/m 2) increase of BMI was associated with a 0.177-year PhenoAgeAccel (95% C.I. = 0.163~0.191, p = 6.0×) and 0.171-year BioAgeAccel (95% C.I. = 0.165~0.177, p = 0). Smokers on average had a 1.134-year PhenoAgeAccel (95% C.I. = 0.966~1.303, p = 1.3×) compared with non-smokers. Drinkers on average had a 0.640-year PhenoAgeAccel (95% C.I. = 0.433~0.847, p = 1.3×) and 0.193-year BioAgeAccel (95% C.I. = 0.107~0.279, p = 1.1×) relative to non-drinkers. A total of 11 and 4 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were associated with PhenoAgeAccel and BioAgeAccel (p&lt;5× in both TWB1 and TWB2), respectively. Conclusions A PhenoAgeAccel-associated SNP (rs1260326 in GCKR) and two BioAgeAccel-associated SNPs (rs7412 in APOE; rs16998073 near FGF5) were consistent with the finding from the UK Biobank. The lifestyle analysis shows that prevention from obesity, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption is associated with a slower rate of biological aging.

Abstract: A statistical analysis of stabilometric study results of 50 male patients with vibration disease (VD) from the effects of general vibration (GV) (average work experience 26,7±6,2) has been carried out. The control group (CG) included 50 men who have not been exposed to the general vibration. The compared groups were comparable by age: the average age of patients with vibration disease was 56.34+5.15, patients of the control group-58.22+-7.05. The study of the support symmetry and equilibrium function was carried out using the Romberg test on the St-150 stabiloplatform (Biomera, Moscow) in a vertical stand with European installation of feet in the positions of open (OE) and closed eyes (CE). A comparative analysis of the parameters of support symmetry in patients with VD from GV revealed a statistically significant sagittal asymmetry in the phases of OE and CE than in individuals of CG. Among the balancing parameters, the most informative parameters of computer stabilometry in patients with VD from GV were: an increase in the area of the statokinesiogram, a decrease in energy efficiency in both phases of the study, and an increase in the speed of the statokinesiogram in phase with CE. Computer stabilometry can be recommended as an additional objective research method in the diagnosis of early stages of VD from GV to improve the quality of periodic medical examinations.

Abstract Biological processes of aging are thought to be modifiable causes of many chronic diseases. Measures of biological aging could provide sensitive endpoints for studies of risk factors hypothesized to shorten healthy lifespan and/or interventions that extend it. However, uncertainty remains about how to measure biological aging and if proposed measures assess the same thing. We tested four proposed measures of biological aging with available data from NHANES 1999-2002: Klemera-Doubal method (KDM) Biological Age, homeostatic dysregulation, Levine Method (LM) Biological Age, and leukocyte telomere length. All measures of biological aging were correlated with chronological age. KDM Biological Age, homeostatic dysregulation, and LM Biological Age were all significantly associated with each other, but were each not associated with telomere length. NHANES participants with older biological ages performed worse on tests of physical, cognitive, perceptual, and subjective functions known to decline with advancing chronological age and thought to mediate age-related disability. Further, NHANES participants with higher levels of exposure to life-course risk factors were measured as having older biological ages. In both sets of analyses, effect-sizes tended to be larger for KDM Biological Age, homeostatic dysregulation, and LM Biological Age as compared to telomere length. Composite measures combining cellular- and patient-level information tended to have the largest effect-sizes. The cellular-level aging biomarker telomere length may measure different aspects of the aging process relative to the patient-level physiological measures. Studies aiming to test if risk factors accelerate aging or if interventions may slow aging should not treat proposed measures of biological aging as interchangeable.

DNA methylation (DNAm) is an emerging estimator of biological aging, i.e., the often-defined “epigenetic clock”, with a unique accuracy for chronological age estimation (DNAmAge). In this pilot longitudinal study, we examine the hypothesis that intensive relaxing training of 60 days in patients after myocardial infarction and in healthy subjects may influence leucocyte DNAmAge by turning back the epigenetic clock. Moreover, we compare DNAmAge with another mechanism of biological age, leucocyte telomere length (LTL) and telomerase. DNAmAge is reduced after training in healthy subjects (p = 0.053), but not in patients. LTL is preserved after intervention in healthy subjects, while it continues to decrease in patients (p = 0.051). The conventional negative correlation between LTL and chronological age becomes positive after training in both patients (p < 0.01) and healthy subjects (p < 0.05). In our subjects, DNAmAge is not associated with LTL. Our findings would suggest that intensive relaxing practices influence different aging molecular mechanisms, i.e., DNAmAge and LTL, with a rejuvenating effect. Our study reveals that DNAmAge may represent an accurate tool to measure the effectiveness of lifestyle-based interventions in the prevention of age-related diseases.

Abstract Timely euthanasia is a fundamental part of safeguarding swine welfare by reducing suffering when compromised pigs are unable to recover. The quality and appropriateness of timely euthanasia rely mainly on the knowledge and experience of the individual caretaker but may also be affected by caretaker attitudes toward euthanasia. However, literature on caretaker attitudes toward swine euthanasia is lacking. This study investigated caretaker attitudes, perceived knowledge, and confidence in performing on-farm timely euthanasia. A total of 84 caretakers from eight swine farms (ranging in size from 1,300 to 7,000 sows) participated in a survey designed to investigate attitudes toward swine and swine euthanasia. Caretaker’s ages ranged from 18 to 59 yr with an average work experience of 8.5 yr. The majority of participants worked in either farrowing or breeding units. Survey questions were designed to assess caretakers’ attitudes and attributes (empathy affect, empathy attribution, attitudes toward pigs, feeling bad about euthanizing pigs, and assumptions about pigs’ emotional capabilities), decision-making skills (confidence in identifying compromised pigs or relying on coworkers to make decisions), and euthanasia skillset (confidence in performing euthanasia, training, and perceived level of knowledge). Using cluster analysis to analyze survey answers, three distinct groups of caretakers were identified: 1) confident and empathetic; 2) Confident, knowledgeable, and detached; and 3) unconfident and lacking knowledge. The survey results showed that empathy attribution was strongly correlated with empathy affect (r = 0.571, P &lt; 0.01) and that empathy affect and empathy attribution were higher in female caretakers compared with male caretakers (P &lt; 0.05). A risk analysis that included previously identified clusters showed that females were more likely to be grouped among caretakers that were confident and empathetic (P = 0.04), and caretakers with more than 2 yr of swine experience were more likely to be grouped as confident and skilled (P = 0.01), while the unconfident and empathetic were more likely to have had less than 2 yr of experience (P = 0.04). This study provides important information about variability in caretaker experience as well as their attitudes toward pigs and timely euthanasia. Increased knowledge about swine caretaker attitudes may be used to implement training and euthanasia protocols to increase both human and pig welfare on farm.
