Many charge controlled models of memristor have been proposed for various applications. First, the original linear dopant drift model suffers discontinuities close to the memristor layer boundaries. Then, the nonlinear dopant drift model improves the memristor behavior near these boundaries but lacks physical meaning and fails for some initial conditions. Finally, we present a new model to correct these defects. We compare these three models in specific situations: (1) when a sine input voltage is applied to the memristor, (2) when a constant voltage is applied to it, and (3) how a memristor transfers charges in a circuit point of view involving resistance-capacitance network. In the later case, we show that our model allows for study of the memristor behavior with phase portraits for any initial conditions and without boundary limitations.

The theory of the vibrations of the pianoforte string put forward by Kaufmann in a well-known paper has figured prominently in recent discussions on the acoustics of this instrument. It proceeds on lines radically different from those adopted by Helmholtz in his classical treatment of the subject. While recognising that the elasticity of the pianoforte hammer is not a negligible factor, Kaufmann set out to simplify the mathematical analysis by ignoring its effect altogether, and treating the hammer as a particle possessing only inertia without spring. The motion of the string following the impact of the hammer is found from the initial conditions and from the functional solutions of the equation of wave-propagation on the string. On this basis he gave a rigorous treatment of two cases: (1) a particle impinging on a stretched string of infinite length, and (2) a particle impinging on the centre of a finite string, neither of which cases is of much interest from an acoustical point of view. The case of practical importance treated by him is that in which a particle impinges on the string near one end. For this case, he gave only an approximate theory from which the duration of contact, the motion of the point struck, and the form of the vibration-curves for various points of the string could be found. There can be no doubt of the importance of Kaufmann’s work, and it naturally becomes necessary to extend and revise his theory in various directions. In several respects, the theory awaits fuller development, especially as regards the harmonic analysis of the modes of vibration set up by impact, and the detailed discussion of the influence of the elasticity of the hammer and of varying velocities of impact. Apart from these points, the question arises whether the approximate method used by Kaufmann is sufficiently accurate for practical purposes, and whether it may be regarded as applicable when, as in the pianoforte, the point struck is distant one-eighth or one-ninth of the length of the string from one end. Kaufmann’s treatment is practically based on the assumption that the part of the string between the end and the point struck remains straight as long as the hammer and string remain in contact. Primâ facie , it is clear that this assumption would introduce error when the part of the string under reference is an appreciable fraction of the whole. For the effect of the impact would obviously be to excite the vibrations of this portion of the string, which continue so long as the hammer is in contact, and would also influence the mode of vibration of the string as a whole when the hammer loses contact. A mathematical theory which is not subject to this error, and which is applicable for any position of the striking point, thus seems called for.

AbstractWe study the theory of universality for the nonautonomous dynamical systems from topological point of view related to hypercyclicity. The conditions are provided in a way that Birkhoff transitivity theorem can be extended. In the context of generalized linear nonautonomous systems, we show that either one of the topological transitivity or hypercyclicity give sensitive dependence on initial conditions. Meanwhile, some examples are presented for topological transitivity, hypercyclicity and topological conjugacy.

This paper studies the dynamics of a self-sustained electromechanical transducer. The stability of fixed points in the linear response is examined. Their local bifurcations are investigated and different types of bifurcation likely to occur are found. Conditions for the occurrence of Hopf bifurcations are derived. Harmonic oscillatory solutions are obtained in both nonresonant and resonant cases. Their stability is analyzed in the resonant case. Various bifurcation diagrams associated to the largest one-dimensional (1-D) numerical Lyapunov exponent are obtained, and it is found that chaos can appear suddenly, through period doubling, period adding, or torus breakdown. The extreme sensitivity of the electromechanical system to both initial conditions and tiny variations of the coupling coefficients is also outlined. The experimental study of̱the electromechanical system is carried out. An appropriate electronic circuit (analog simulator) is proposed for the investigation of the dynamical behavior of the electromechanical system. Correspondences are established between the coefficients of the electromechanical system model and the components of the electronic circuit. Harmonic oscillatory solutions and phase portraits are obtained experimentally. One of the most important contributions of this work is to provide a set of reliable analytical expressions (formulas) describing the electromechanical system behavior. These formulas are of great importance for design engineers as they can be used to predict the states of the electromechanical systems and respectively to avoid their destruction. The reliability of the analytical formulas is demonstrated by the very good agreement with the results obtained by both the numeric and the experimental analysis.

We suggest considering the city as a complex, open, and thus self-organized system, and describing it by means of a cell-space model. A central property of self-organizing systems is that they are not controllable—not by individuals, nor by economic, political, and planning institutions. The city, in this respect, is complex and untamable. Inability to recognize and accept this property is one of the reasons for the difficulties and problems of modernist town planning. The theory and model we present are built to describe the urban process as a historical one in which, given identical initial conditions, each simulation run is unique and never fully repeats itself. From the point of view of urban policy and planning, our heuristic model can guide decisionmakers by answering the following question: ‘given the initial conditions of an inflow of new immigrants (that is, from the ex-USSR), what possible urban scenarios can result, and what are their global structural properties?’.

As part of an ongoing project on the stability of massively complex electrical power systems, we discuss the global geometric structure of contacts among the basins of attraction of a six-dimensional dynamical system. This system represents a simple model of an electrical power system involving three machines and an infinite bus. Apart from the possible occurrence of attractors representing pathological states, the contacts between the basins have a practical importance, from the point of view of the operation of a real electrical power system. With the aid of a global map of basins, one could hope to design an intervention strategy to boot the power system back into its normal state. Our method involves taking two-dimensional sections of the six-dimensional state space, and then determining the basins directly by numerical simulation from a dense grid of initial conditions. The relations among all the basins are given for a specific numerical example, that is, choosing particular values for the parameters in our model.

The physical meaning of the so-called effective pairs which have been introduced recently within the formalism of pair population analysis is discussed using the analysis of conditional probabilities of electron density distribution for electron 1 with the reference electron fixed in a certain point 2. It is demonstrated that from the point of view of the mutual coupling of electron motions, the effective pairs behave analogously to singlet pairs. Based on this finding, effective pairs can be interpreted as the fraction of singlet pairs that is directly involved in bonding.

ABSTRACTThe present note introduces new trends in electromagnetic spectroscopy in complex media. When an electromagnetic wave propagates in heterogeneous media, some questions arise about both physical meaning and validity range of the traditional analysis. The aim of our advanced research is related to the generalisation of Maxwell's equations able todescribe both homogeneous and heterogeneous media from an unique point of view.

The dynamic features of soliton transporting the bio-energy in the α-helix protein molecules with three channels under influences of temperature of systems and chain–chain interaction among these channels have been numerically studied by using the dynamic equations in a new model and the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method. This result obtained shows that the chain–chain interaction depresses the stability of the soliton due to the dispersed effect, but the stability of the soliton in the case of simultaneous motivation of three channels by an initial conditions is better than that in another initial condition. We also find from this investigation that the new soliton can transport steadily over 1000 amino acid residues in the cases of motion of long time of 120 ps, and retain their shapes and energies to travel towards the protein molecules after mutual collision of the solitons at the biological temperatures of 300 K. Therefore the soliton is very robust against the thermal perturbation of the α-helix protein molecules at 300 K. From the investigation of changes of features of the soliton with increasing temperature, we find that the amplitudes and velocities of the solitons decrease with increasing temperature of proteins, but the soliton disperses in the cases of higher temperature of 325 K and larger structure disorders. Thus we find that the critical temperature of the soliton occurring in the α-helix protein molecules is about 320 K. Therefore we can conclude that the soliton in the new model can play an important role in the bio-energy transport in the α-helix protein molecules with three channels at biological temperature, and the new model is possibly a candidate for the mechanism of this transport.

We expose the chaotic attractors of time-reversed nonlinear system, further implement its behavior on electronic circuit, and apply the pragmatical asymptotically stability theory to strictly prove that the adaptive synchronization of given master and slave systems with uncertain parameters can be achieved. In this paper, the variety chaotic motions of time-reversed Lorentz system are investigated through Lyapunov exponents, phase portraits, and bifurcation diagrams. For further applying the complex signal in secure communication and file encryption, we construct the circuit to show the similar chaotic signal of time-reversed Lorentz system. In addition, pragmatical asymptotically stability theorem and an assumption of equal probability for ergodic initial conditions (Ge et al., 1999, Ge and Yu, 2000, and Matsushima, 1972) are proposed to strictly prove that adaptive control can be accomplished successfully. The current scheme of adaptive control—by traditional Lyapunov stability theorem and Barbalat lemma, which are used to prove the error vector—approaches zero, as time approaches infinity. However, the core question—why the estimated or given parameters also approach to the uncertain parameters—remains without answer. By the new stability theory, those estimated parameters can be proved approaching the uncertain values strictly, and the simulation results are shown in this paper.
