As the exploration and drilling of oil, natural gas and geothermal wells are expanding continuously, research into high-efficiency rock drilling technology is imperative. High-voltage electro pulse boring (EPB) has the advantages of high rock breaking efficiency and good wall quality, and is a new and efficient potential method of rock breaking. The design of electrode drill bits and the selection of drilling process parameters are the main obstacles restricting the commercialization of EPB. Accordingly, it is necessary to determine the influences on high-voltage EPB. In this study, based on the equivalent circuit of high-voltage electro pulse breakdown, a mathematical model of high-voltage electro pulse discharge in rock is established. Meanwhile, a numerical simulation model of high-voltage EPB of hard granite is established based on a coaxial cylindrical electrode structure, which is often used for electrode drill bits. The simulation analysis software Comsol Multiphysics (Comsol Multiphysics®5.3a, COMSOL Co., Ltd., Stockholm, Sweden) is used to study the influences of granite composition, electrode spacing and electrode shape on the high-voltage EPB process. In addition, the influences of electrical parameters on high-voltage EPB are calculated according to a model of high-voltage electro pulse discharge in rock. Finally, it is demonstrated that high-voltage EPB is influenced by granite composition, electrical parameters, electrode spacing, and electrode shape, and the relationships between these factors are obtained. This study is of guiding significance for improving rock breaking efficiency, reducing energy loss, designing electrode drill bits and selecting drilling process parameters.

Polycrystalline diamond compact bits have been widely used in the Oil and Gas drilling industry, despite the fact that they may introduce undesired vibration into the drilling process, for example, stick-slip and bit bounce, which accelerate the failure rate and lead to higher drilling costs. First, we develop an innovative ridge-ladder-shaped polycrystalline diamond compact cutter, which has ridge-shaped cutting faces and multiple cutting edges with stepped distribution, in the hope of reducing vibration and improving drilling speed. Then, the scrape tests of ridge-ladder-shaped and general polycrystalline diamond compact cutters are carried out in a laboratory, indicating that the cutting, lateral, and longitudinal forces on ridge-ladder-shaped polycrystalline diamond compact cutters are smaller and with minor fluctuations. Due to different rock-breaking mechanisms, ridge-ladder-shaped polycrystalline diamond compact cutters have higher cutting efficiency compared to general polycrystalline diamond compact cutters, which is also verified experimentally. Finally, the drilling characteristics of a new polycrystalline diamond compact bit fitted with some ridge-ladder-shaped polycrystalline diamond compact cutters are compared to those of a general polycrystalline diamond compact bit by means of finite element simulation. The results show that introducing ridge-ladder-shaped polycrystalline diamond compact cutters can not only reduce the stick-slip vibration, bit bounce, and backward rotation of drill bits effectively, but also improve their rate of penetration.

The drilling process is the most essential in the final assembly of the mechanical parts. Natural fiber based composites replace traditional materials due to their advantages, such as strength to weight ratio, availability, and environmental hazards. In this work, an attempt has been made to find the minimum thrust force produced by the drill tool at specified drilling process parameters. The drilling process parameters used for the investigation are rotational speed, tool feed, and resins. The spindle speed and feed rate are selected with three levels. Three resin materials were used, namely, epoxy, polyester, and vinyl ester. Taguchi’s L27 orthogonal array was implemented. The result shows that the candlestick drill bit generated lesser thrust force at the specified drilling process parameters, followed by the twist and step cone drill bits.

Three fractions of tobacco waste (scrap, dust and midrib) were subjected to a high voltage electric discharge (HVED) assisted extraction procedure under different experimental conditions: solvent:solid ratio (300, 500, 700 mL/g), frequency (40, 70, 100 Hz) and treatment time (15, 30, 45 min), in order to study the influence of these conditions on the content of chlorogenic acid. The content of chlorogenic acid ranged from 1.54 to 3.66 mg/100 g for scrap, from 1.90 to 2.97 mg/100 g for dust, and from 2.30 to 3.38 mg/100 g for midrib extract, showing a strong dependence on the applied process parameters. The temperature change and the change in pH and electrical conductivity of the extracts after high voltage discharge treatment were also observed. The studied process parameters showed a statistically significant effect on the chemical and physical properties of the extracts from tobacco waste as well as on the content of chlorogenic acid, indicating the potential of HVED assisted processes in the separation of chlorogenic acid from tobacco industry waste. Multiple regression analysis was used to fit the results for the chlorogenic acid to a second order polynomial equation and the optimum conditions were determined.

AbstractSurface roughness and heat-affected zone (HAZ) are the important features which influence the performance of the laser-drilled products. Understanding the influence of laser process parameters on these responses and identifying the cutting conditions for simultaneous optimization of these responses are a primary requirement in order to improve the laser drilling performance. Nevertheless, no such contribution has been made in the literature during laser drilling of AISI 303 material. The aim of the present work is to optimize the surface roughness (Ra) and HAZ in fibre laser drilling of AISI 303 material using Taguchi-based grey relational analysis (GRA). From the GRA methodology, the recommended optimum combination of process parameters is flushing pressure at 30 Pa, laser power at 2000 W and pulse frequency at 1500 Hz for simultaneous optimization of Ra and HAZ, respectively. From analysis of variance, the pulse frequency is identified as the most influenced process parameters on laser drilling process performance.

AbstractCarbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) is the most preferred composite material due to its high strength, high modulus, corrosion resistance and rigidity and which has wide applications in aerospace engineering, automobile sector, sports instrumentation, light trucks, airframes. This paper is an attempt to carry out drilling experiments as per Taguchi’s L27(313) orthogonal array on CFRP under dry condition with three different drill bit type (HSS, TiAlN and TiN). In this research work Response Surface Analysis (RSA) is used to correlate the effect of process parameters (cutting speed and feed rate) on thrust force, torque, vibration and surface roughness. This paper also focuses on determining the optimum combination of input process parameter and the drill bit type that produces quality holes in CFRP composite laminate using Multi-objective Taguchi technique and TOPSIS. The percentage of contribution, influence of process parameters and adequacy of the second order regression model is carried out by analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results of experimental investigation demonstrates that feed rate is the pre-dominate factor which affects the response variables.

Applying high-voltage electric field (HVEF) to some food materials has been shown to increase the thawing rate. To investigate the effect of process parameters and electrode configuration in high-voltage electric field system, we took the frozen tofu as the research object and investigated the influence of the different voltages, electrode configuration, and electrode distances on thawing process. The thawing time, center temperatures, and loss rate of samples were measured. The results showed that the thawing time of frozen tofu decreases with the increase of voltage and the thawing time has a great relevance with configuration and distance of electrodes. The electric parameters have a major effect on thawing loss and thawing time when center temperatures of frozen tofu are from −2°C to 0°C. This work provides clues and experimental basis for the further application of high-voltage electric field thawing technology.
