The article presents the results of research on the vibroacoustic response of internal combustion engines mounted in a vehicle. The vehicles studied belong to popular models, which became available in successive versions. Each group included vehicles of the same model of an older generation (equipped with a naturally aspirated engine) and of a newer generation, including downsized (and turbocharged) engines. Tests in each group were carried out under repeatable conditions on a chassis-load dynamometer. The vibrations were measured using single-axis accelerometers mounted on the steering wheel, engine, and driver’s head restraint mounting. The primary purpose of the study was to verify whether the new generations of vehicles equipped with additional high-speed elements (compressors) generate additional harmonics (especially those within the range potentially affecting travel comfort and human health) and whether there are significant changes in the distribution of spectral power density in the new generations. As the study showed, new generations of vehicles are characterized by a different vibroacoustic response, and the trend of change is the same in each of the families studied.

Abstract. Compressional waves in the Earth's current sheet, driven by the high-speed plasma flows connected to substorms, are investigated using the Cluster magnetometer and plasma instrument. During the time that Cluster had its apogee in the magnetotail (July through October 2001), we have studied 5 events in detail. We find compressional waves in the 30–60mHz band, at a spectral power density that is dependent on when and where the event is observed. There is a difference of two orders of magnitude in power density between waves at substorm onset and waves during quiet times. Strong plasma flows are the driver of the wave power. The spacecraft location in the current sheet is also important for the spectral power density. Having four spacecraft available we can discern spatial from temporal variations. We have determined the propagation direction of the waves in the 30–60mHz band and found that in the Cluster rest frame they propagate in the same direction as the plasma flow at an angle 30° < ∆φ < 40° with respect to the plasma flow direction in the spacecraft' rest frame. This paper presents a new concept of the externally heated valve (EHV) engine. Air can be used as a working medium in the closed cycle of this engine. Heat delivered to the working air can come from a combustion chamber or another heat generator of an arbitrary type. The engine construction and the thermodynamic cycle performed by it are original and entirely different from the well-known Stirling engine. The main disadvantage of the Stirling engine is its low power density, that is the low power obtained per litre of the engine cylinder volume. In the case of the engine presented here it is possible to achieve power density and efficiency similar to those typical of advanced internal combustion engines. Comparisons between the power of the Stirling engine and the power of the new engine have been performed for the same engine capacity, rotational frequency and maximum and minimum temperatures of the cycle. At the same minimum pressure of the working gas in both engines, the power of the EHV engine is several times higher than that of the Stirling engine, while, on the other hand, at the same maximum pressure of the working gas in both engines, the power of the EHV engine is 20 per cent higher than that of the Stirling engine power. The efficiencies of both engines do not differ significantly from each other.

Abstract Longitudinal profiles of roches moutonnées have been measured once every centimetre over a total length of more than 100 m. Only wavelengths in the range 3.6 cm &lt; λ &lt; 40 cm have been kept and analysed. Levels and their slopes have a symmetrical, non-Gaussian distribution. The spectral power density varies roughly as γ 0 ν–n (ν ═ wavenumber ═ 1/λ); n being the same for all the profiles (n ═ 2.36) and γ 0 being dependent on the studied area. No significant difference has been found for the shadowing function of the different studied areas. It differs consistently from Smith’s theoretical function.

Patterns of spontaneous electric activity in the cerebral cortex change upon administration of benzodiazepines. Here we are testing the hypothesis that the prototypical benzodiazepine, diazepam, affects spectral power density in the low (20–50 Hz) and high (50–90 Hz) γ-band by targeting GABAA receptors harboring α1- and α2-subunits. Local field potentials (LFPs) and action potentials were recorded in the barrel cortex of wild type mice and two mutant strains in which the drug exclusively acted via GABAA receptors containing either α1- (DZα1-mice) or α2-subunits (DZα2-mice). In wild type mice, diazepam enhanced low γ-power. This effect was also evident in DZα2-mice, while diazepam decreased low γ-power in DZα1-mice. Diazepam increased correlated local LFP-activity in wild type animals and DZα2- but not in DZα1-mice. In all genotypes, spectral power density in the high γ-range and multi-unit action potential activity declined upon diazepam administration. We conclude that diazepam modifies low γ-power in opposing ways via α1- and α2-GABAA receptors. The drug’s boosting effect involves α2-receptors and an increase in local intra-cortical synchrony. Furthermore, it is important to make a distinction between high- and low γ-power when evaluating the effects of drugs that target GABAA receptors.

This paper presents a method for solving the dynamic response problems of a driven valve system and the stress problem of valve springs for internal combustion engines. In this system there is hysteresis behavior in the spring constants during the rotation of the cam shaft. To treat this nonlinearity, the rigidity of each section is assumed to be one of a partly linear spring. For the valve trains, the cam profile is complex in general. To treat a general cam profile, this paper applies a combination method of the Fourier expansion, the Laplace transform and the analytical connection methods, and gives a response of valve trains. This paper also presents a theoretical result for the stresses in the valve spring due to the motion of the valve train based on the three dimensional curved beam theory.
