Biomass-based pellet is an important source of renewable energy. In this study, to obtain the high-quality fuel pellet via the densification of pruned branches of fruit trees, we investigated the optimization of blending ratios for different raw materials using branches from jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.), which is a widely distributed waste biomass resource in China. Through the characterization of raw materials and pellets, the effects of different raw materials on the storage, transportation, and combustion performances of the pellets can be understood. The cost evaluation analysis showed that the two optimized, co-densified pellets had great cost advantages compared with the pure jujube branch pellets. This indicates the potential industrial value of optimized pellets. The results of this study can help to improve the application value of orchard residues and generate an additional profit for fruit plantations, simultaneously avoiding the environmental damage caused by its open combustion.

Mathematical and economic modeling of the efficiency of recycling tailings utilization at the cost of commercial products, taking into account the prevented environmental damage. Results. The information on the dynamics of mining and processing of ores from the Sadonsky deposits is presented. The results of studies of the properties of base concrete mixtures based on ore dressing tailings and local available components are systematized and generalized. The results of changes in the properties of hardening mixtures are given depending on the presence of metals in the tailings of enrichment with various activation options by alternative methods, including an innovative method of mechanochemical leaching in a disintegrator with electrochemically activated water. The equivalent of 1 kg of cement using binders from processing tailings has been determined. The advantages of mechanochemical activation of tailings in a disintegrator in comparison with the option of irrigation by irrigation using various reagents have been experimentally determined. A quantitative indicator of an increase in the strength of the compositions of hardening mixtures under equal conditions has been established. The efficiency of utilization of tailings and metallurgy has been determined as a set of effects of reducing the amount of environmental damage from storage of tailings, the cost of metals obtained during processing, raw materials for the construction industry and associated marketable products. The nomenclature of tailings processing products has been detailed. A model for determining the profit from processing tailings and metallurgy is recommended. A forecast is given at the level of engineering expertise of the prospects for tailings processing. The hardware diagram of the tailings disposal section is detailed. A universal scheme for the disposal of mining and processing waste was recommended. Conclusion. The prospects for the development of the deposits of the Sadonsky ore cluster depend on conversion to technologies with filling voids with solidifying mixtures and leaching of metals at the processing stages. The combined mining technology will reduce the output of tailings, strengthen the base of the construction industry, eliminate the need to build a second stage of tailings and improve the environment.

The building sector is known to have a significant environmental impact, considering that it is the largest contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions of around 36% and is also responsible for about 40% of global energy consumption. Of this, about 50% takes place during the building operational phase, while around 10–20% is consumed in materials manufacturing, transport and building construction, maintenance, and demolition. Increasing the necessity of reducing the environmental impact of buildings has led to enhancing not only the thermal performances of building materials, but also the environmental sustainability of their production chains and waste prevention. As a consequence, novel thermo-insulating building materials or products have been developed by using both locally produced natural and waste/recycled materials that are able to provide good thermal performances while also having a lower environmental impact. In this context, the aim of this work is to provide a detailed analysis for the thermal characterization of recycled materials for building insulation. To this end, the thermal behavior of different materials representing industrial residual or wastes collected or recycled using Sardinian zero-km locally available raw materials was investigated, namely: (1) plasters with recycled materials; (2) plasters with natural fibers; and (3) building insulation materials with natural fibers. Results indicate that the investigated materials were able to improve not only the energy performances but also the environmental comfort in both new and in existing buildings. In particular, plasters and mortars with recycled materials and with natural fibers showed, respectively, values of thermal conductivity (at 20 °C) lower than 0.475 and 0.272 W/(m⋅K), while that of building materials with natural fibers was always lower than 0.162 W/(m⋅K) with lower values for compounds with recycled materials (0.107 W/(m⋅K)). Further developments are underway to analyze the mechanical properties of these materials.

Background:In medical practice lobular panniculitis-lipodermatosclerosis (LDS) is becoming more and more common. It is manifested by degenerative-dystrophic changes in subcutaneous fat (SCF) and occurs more often in middle-aged women affected by chronic venous insufficiency. Objectives:to evaluate the effectiveness of mesotherapy (MT) and shockwave ultrasound therapy (UST) for LDSMethods:among 539 patients referred to the V.A. Nasonova Research Institute of Rheumatology with the referral diagnoses of erythema nodosum or panniculitis 8.5% (46) of patients (44 women, 2 men) aged 18 to 82 with overweight (32) LDS with the disease duration of 11,8±6.4 months was verified. Patients were randomized into two groups of 23 patients each: group I received daily MT (10 sessions) therapy with drugs that have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, lymphatic drainage and lipolytic effects, and 3 MHz UST of the node area twice a week (5 sessions). In group II MT was performed daily with 9% Natrii chloridum solution at a dose comparable to group I. The control methods included general clinical examination (characterization of induration on the lower legs with an assessment of the effect of pain pressing according to visual analogue scale (VAS pain), general blood and urine tests and ultrasound with elastography (USE) of the compaction. The main stages of control: initial (T0), after 14 days (T1), 1 month (T2) and 3 months (T3).Results:before treatment 38 patients with LDS demonstrated asymmetric (83%) inflammation of SCF of the lower legs (100%) on its medial surface (91%). LDS regressed faster with normal body mass index (p = 0,04). In all patients of group I, after a course of physiotherapy a positive trend was registered, that is a decrease in VAS pain intensity (T0 50±18 mm; T1 35±11 mm), decrease in diameter (T0 6±2.2 cm; T1 4.5±1, 7 mm) and color intensity of the node (p<0.002), SCF thickening which results in “lumping” with macrovascularization according to USE, and decrease in ESR and CRP. In 44% of cases the treatment effect increased to T2 (p <0.05). After 3 months of observation, 15 patients required a second course of physiotherapy. In group II a positive clinical effect was registered for T2 in 14 patients (60.8%) and for T3 in 19 patients (83%) (p<0.05). Over the entire observation period LDS recurrence was registered in 19 patients (41%), the median of recurrence was 3 [1; 6] months, mainly in patients of group I. Recurrence was associated with node fusion into conglomerates (OR 4.33, 95% CI 1.05-17.8; p = 0.037). MT and UST were tolerated well, no side effects were detected. Conclusion:the use of MT with 9% Natrii chloridum solution allowed us to achieve positive dynamics in patients with LDS, which significantly reduced the cost of treatment. Further studies are needed to evaluate the significance of these techniques.Disclosure of Interests:None declared

In mango (Mangifera indica L.), fruitlet abscission limits productivity. The INFLORESCENCE DEFICIENT IN ABSCISSION (IDA) peptide acts as a key component controlling abscission events in Arabidopsis. IDA-like peptides may assume similar roles in fruit trees. In this study, we isolated two mango IDA-like encoding-genes, MiIDA1 and MiIDA2. We used mango fruitlet-bearing explants and fruitlet-bearing trees, in which fruitlets abscission was induced using ethephon. We monitored the expression profiles of the two MiIDA-like genes in control and treated fruitlet abscission zones (AZs). In both systems, qRT-PCR showed that, within 24 h, both MiIDA-like genes were induced by ethephon, and that changes in their expression profiles were associated with upregulation of different ethylene signaling-related and cell-wall modifying genes. Furthermore, ectopic expression of both genes in Arabidopsis promoted floral-organ abscission, and was accompanied by an early increase in the cytosolic pH of floral AZ cells—a phenomenon known to be linked with abscission, and by activation of cell separation in vestigial AZs. Finally, overexpression of both genes in an Atida mutant restored its abscission ability. Our results suggest roles for MiIDA1 and MiIDA2 in affecting mango fruitlet abscission. Based on our results, we propose new possible modes of action for IDA-like proteins in regulating organ abscission.

Sherry wine vinegar is a Spanish gourmet product under Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). Before a vinegar can be labeled as Sherry vinegar, the product must meet certain requirements as established by its PDO, which, in this case, means that it has been produced following the traditional solera and criadera ageing system. The quality of the vinegar is determined by many factors such as the raw material, the acetification process or the aging system. For this reason, mainly producers, but also consumers, would benefit from the employment of effective analytical tools that allow precisely determining the origin and quality of vinegar. In the present study, a total of 48 Sherry vinegar samples manufactured from three different starting wines (Palomino Fino, Moscatel, and Pedro Ximénez wine) were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The spectroscopic data were combined with unsupervised exploratory techniques such as hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA), as well as other nonparametric supervised techniques, namely, support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF), for the characterization of the samples. The HCA and PCA results present a clear grouping trend of the vinegar samples according to their raw materials. SVM in combination with leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) successfully classified 100% of the samples, according to the type of wine used for their production. The RF method allowed selecting the most important variables to develop the characteristic fingerprint (“spectralprint”) of the vinegar samples according to their starting wine. Furthermore, the RF model reached 100% accuracy for both LOOCV and out-of-bag (OOB) sets.
