Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is a highly prevalent disease, the progression of which depends on high blood glucose levels, which are reflected in the level of glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c). Appropriate health education equips patients with the knowledge and skills to control their glucose and HbA1c levels to avoid long-term complications. This study was set up to compare the results of an intensive (360 min) educational intervention to improve HbA1c parameters in patients with DM2 with those of a usual 90 min intervention. For this purpose, healthcare personnel led a quasi-experimental study of 249 diabetics: 171 in the control group, and 78 in the intervention group. In the control group, the mean HbA1c value decreased from 6.97 to 6.75, while in intervention group it fell from 8.97 to 8.06. The before and after mean difference between both groups was compared with a Wilcoxon test, and the results statistically significant (W = 4530; p < 0.001), indicating a higher reduction of HbA1c in the intervention group. We concluded that the intensive health education provided by nurses during the consultation helped improve HBA1c levels in persons with DM2.

Abstract Objectives The aim was to investigate the effect of physical activity on periodontal health and HbA1c levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) over a period of 6 months. Materials and methods Thirty-seven patients with non-insulin-dependent T2DM were included in the study. The intervention group (n=20) performed physical activity over a period of 6 months. The control group (n=17) did not receive any intervention. Baseline and final examinations included dental parameters and concentrations of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). Results Physical activity showed a positive effect on periodontal health. Both the BOP (p= 0.005) and the severity of periodontitis (p= 0.001) were significantly reduced in the intervention group compared to the control group. Furthermore, HbA1c levels were reduced (p= 0.010) significantly in the intervention group while hsCRP levels significantly increased in the control group (p= 0.04). Conclusions Within the limitations of this randomized, controlled trial, physical activity over a period of 6 months is a health-promoting measure for patients with T2DM and improves both periodontal health and HbA1c concentrations.

BACKGROUND Presently, dietary management approaches are mostly oriented toward using calorie-counting and diet-tracking tools that draw our attention away from the nutritional value of our food. To improve individuals’ dietary behavior, primarily that of people with type 2 diabetes, a simple technique is needed to increase their understanding of the nutritional content of their food. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to design, develop, and evaluate a customized nutrient-profiling tool called <i>EasyNutrition</i>. <i>EasyNutrition</i> was built to introduce the new concept of nutrient profiling by applying the Intelligent Nutrition Engine, an algorithm that we developed for ranking different food recipes based on their nutritional value. This study also aimed to investigate the efficacy of <i>EasyNutrition</i> in lowering glycated hemoglobin (HbA<sub>1c</sub>) levels and improving dietary habits among people with type 2 diabetes. METHODS We evaluated the utility of <i>EasyNutrition</i> using design science research in three sequential stages. This paper has elaborated on the third stage to investigate the efficacy of <i>EasyNutrition</i> in managing type 2 diabetes. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in a diabetes treatment center (n=28). The intervention group utilized <i>EasyNutrition</i> over 3 months, whereas participants in the control group utilized the standard of care provided by the center. Dietary habits and HbA<sub>1c</sub> levels were measured to capture any change before and after experimenting with <i>EasyNutrition</i>. RESULTS The intervention group (n=9) exhibited a statistically significant change between the pre- and postexposure results of their HbA<sub>1c</sub> (<i>t</i><sub>9</sub>=2.427; <i>P</i>=.04). Their HbA<sub>1c</sub> dropped from 8.13 to 6.72. This provided preliminary evidence of the efficacy of using a customized nutrient-profiling app in reducing HbA<sub>1c</sub> for people with type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS This study adds to the evidence base that a nutrient-profiling strategy may be a modern adjunct to diabetes dietary management. In conjunction with reliable dietary education provided by a registered dietician, <i>EasyNutrition</i> may have some beneficial effects to improve the dietary habits of people with type 2 diabetes.

Objective Lack of awareness about Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is the most commonly cited reason why many persons with type 2 diabetes are non-compliant with referral instruction to undergo retinal screening. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a culturally, geographically and socially appropriate, locally adapted five-month-long health education on referral compliance of participants. Method A prospective randomized, open-label parallel group study was conducted on persons with type 2 diabetes who underwent basic eye screening at a diabetes hospital between September 2017 and August 2018. Participants who were noncompliant with referral instruction to visit a hospital for advanced DR management were randomly divided into health education intervention group (n = 143) and control group (n = 156). Both groups received information regarding DR and referral instruction at the diabetes hospital. The intervention group was provided personalized education followed by telephonic reminders. The primary endpoint was ‘increase in referral compliance’ and the secondary endpoint was ‘increase in knowledge of DR’. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to identify significant predictors of compliance to referral. Results A total of nine participants dropped and 290 completed the post intervention survey. The compliance rate in intervention group was found to be significantly higher than the control group (64.3% vs 28.2%; OR 4.73; 95% CI 2.87–7.79; p<0.001). Participants in the intervention group acquired better knowledge on DR (p<0.05). Apart from intervention, referral compliance rate was also found to be significantly associated with participants’ self-perception of vision problem (OR 2.02; 95% CI 1.02–4.01; p = 0.045) and participants’ income (OR 1.24; 95% CI 1.06–1.44; p = 0.008). Discussion Our results suggest that intensive health education on DR should be integrated with diabetes education as it may result in significantly improved referral compliance. Outcomes may be sustainable if interventions are institutionalized at referral point. Objective: Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs reduce gastric acid secretion and lead to an increase in serum gastrin levels. Many preclinical and some clinical researches have established some positive effects of gastrin or PPI therapy on glucose regulation. The aim of this study was to prospectively investigate the short term effects of esomeprazole on glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In addition, the presence of an association between this effect and gastrin levels was evaluated. Methods: Thirty-two subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus were enrolled and grouped as intervention (n=16) and control (n=16). The participants in the intervention group were prescribed 40 mg of esomeprazole treatment for three months. At the beginning of the study and at the 3rd month, HbA1c level (%) and gastrin levels (pmol/L) of participants were assessed. Then, the groups were compared in terms of their baseline and 3rd month values. Results: In the intervention group, the mean gastrin level increased significantly from 34.3±14.4 pmol/L to 87.4±43.6 pmol/L (p<0.001). The mean HbA1c level was similar to the pre-treatment level (6.3±0.7% vs. 6.4±0.9%, p=0.441). There were no statistically significant differences in all parameters of the control group. The majority of individuals were on metformin monotherapy (65.6 %). The subgroup analysis of metformin monotherapy revealed that, in intervention group, there was a significant increase in gastrin levels (39.9±12.6 vs. 95.5±52.5, p=0.026), but the HbA1c levels did not change (6.0±0.4 % vs. 5.9±0.6 %, p=0.288); and in control group, gastrin levels did not change (37.5 ± 26.7 vs. 36.1 ±23.3, p=0.367), but there was an increase in HbA1c levels (6.1 ± 0.50 vs. 6.4 ± 0.60, p=0.01). Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that esomeprazole has no extra benefit for the controlled diabetic patient in three months. However, in only the metformin-treated subgroup, esomeprazole may prevent the rise in HbA1c level.

Objective : There is cognitive impairment in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and the cognitive ability is related to self-management behavior. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of individualized health education based on internet platform in the cognitive function of patients with T2DM. Method : A total of 60 patients with T2DM were divided into control group and intervention group. The control group received regular diabetes knowledge education during hospitalization. The intervention group received further cognitive and behavioral intervention through internet platform after discharge. After six months of follow-up, the changes of fasting blood glucose (FBG), 2 hours postprandial blood glucose (2hBG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), cognitive function, self management of patients with T2DM were observed and compared between two groups. Result : Compared with the data before intervention, FBG, 2hBG and HbAlc of all patients were significantly reduced, and delayed memory score was significantly increased, especially in the intervention group. Compared with that before intervention, the scores of diet control, exercise compliance, drug compliance, monitoring compliance, foot care and smoking in the intervention group were significantly improved after intervention, and the improvement level was significantly higher than that in the control group. Conclusion: Health education based on internet platform can significantly reduce the blood glucose and HbA1c level of patients with T2DM, improve the level of self-management and cognitive function of T2DM patients, especially in the aspect of delayed memory, which is conducive to disease control and health recovery.

Background: Infant mortality rate in Indonesia in 2012 is 32 per 1,000 live births. It is less pleasant ifcompared to the target Ministry of Health of Republic of Indonesia tries to achieve, which is 24 by 2014. The low rate of breastfeedingto one of the dominant factor that cause the mortality it is influenced by several factors, in which one of them is the mother’sknowledge about breast milk and breastfeeding. Health education on lactation management may help increase mothers’ ability to gain information as well as their confidence to breastfeeding their baby.Objective: This research is conducted with the purpose to know the effect of health education with audiovisual on lactation management to the level of knowledge and self-efficacy among breastfeeding mothers.Method: This research is categorized as quasi experimental one, whose design applies pre-test and post-test non-equivalent control group. It is conducted toward 32 breastfeeding mothers who receive health education as the treatment group, and to 32 breastfeeding mothers who are asked to read modules about breastfeeding as the control group. The sampling technique applies purposive sampling and simple random sampling. Data are processed by computer programs using Mann-Whitney test, Wilcoxon test, and linear regression model.Result and Discussion : The score for the value of knowledge before treatment among both groups were relatively similar (p>0.05). After treatment, both groups  have improvement, (p<0.05). The score of self-efficacy before treatment among both groups did not have significantly different (p>0.05). compared to control group, the intervention group has significantly higher score of knowledge (p>0.05)Conclusion: Health education by audiovisual media and modules are more effective to improve the knowledge and self-efficacy among breastfeeding mothers compared to by only modules.Keywords: Health education, Audiovisual, Modules, Knowledge, Breastfeeding, Self-Efficacy

Purpose The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ALDEA (Latinos con Diabetes en Acción), a Shared Medical Appointment (SMA) intervention, compared to usual primary care (UPC) for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes over a 6-month period. It was hypothesized that participants in the SMA will have greater reductions in A1C at 6 months post-intervention compared to the control group. Methods This study was a quasi-experimental design with a non-randomized matched control group that followed participants prospectively for 6 months. All adults living with type-2 diabetes receiving primary care at a 2 FQHC clinics were eligible for inclusion. Participants in the control group were matched retrospectively on baseline A1C and age. Results The reductions in A1C were greater in the ALDEA SMA intervention group relative to the UPC control group at 6 months in both of the FQHC centers and in the combined sample. Conclusions This study demonstrated that patients in the ALDEA program had a significantly greater reduction in A1C at 6 months compared to the control group. Despite its limitations, the ALDEA SMA program was successful in empowering patients and improving glycemic control.

Adolescence is a transition period with specific needs for growth and development. The reproduction of health education is essential to be given to adolescents because they are susceptible to the risks of reproduction health problems. Giving explanations of health education for adolescents by using media will maximize them in absorbing information since media has become an integral part of adolescents' life. One alternative media that is close and familiar with adolescents is an Android application that can be easily accessed by teenagers who have it through a handphone. The purpose of this study was to know the effectiveness of android based applications at the Central Jakarta Senior High School. The method of this research is a quasi-experimental research with control group design. Sampling by cluster sampling method at SMAN 1 Jakarta as an intervention group and SMAN 5 Jakarta as a control group. Statistical tests using the Paired T-Test, Wilcoxon Test, and Mann Whitney test. The results of the study show what is meant by the knowledge of adolescents with a value of p = 0,000, so Android application can be applied as a media tool about improving the health of adolescents in schools.

Abstract Background About one quarter of pregnant women in the population of Pakistan are using long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets (LLINs) for prevention of malaria. Past research reported that adequate information and education would act as mediator to change behaviour among patients for prevention of malaria infection. The effective use of LLINs would contribute to reduction of disease burden caused by malaria. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of health education on the adoption of LLINs among pregnant women living in Tharparkar, a remote district in Sindh Province, Pakistan.Methods A quasi-experimental study design with control and intervention groups was conducted with 200 pregnant women (100 in each group). Women in the intervention group were provided with health education sessions on malaria for 12 weeks, while those in the control group obtained routine information from lady health workers (LHWs). Pre- and post-intervention assessment was done of knowledge about malaria and use of LLIN, which was statistically analysed using descriptive statistics and difference in difference (DID) multivariable regression analysis to test effectiveness of the intervention.Results Baseline was conducted with 200 pregnant women. Demographic characteristics were similar in both groups with slight differences in age, education, income, type of latrine, and source of drinking water. There were no significant differences between mean knowledge and use of LLINs scores between groups at baseline. However, the estimated DID value after the intervention was 4.170 (p <0.01) and represents an increase in scores of knowledge in the intervention group compared to control. Similarly DID value of 3.360 (p <0.05) showed an increase in use of LLINs score after the intervention which was significant, showing that the intervention had a positive effect.Conclusions Results proved that health education could be an effective intervention for improving knowledge and usage of LLINs among pregnant women for the prevention of malaria. Such educational interventions have a positive potential to be implemented at larger scale by incorporating them into routine health sessions provided by health workers.
